We like this place. The food is really great. I love the Gen Tao. My only complaint is their policy on soup. The "meals" only come with soup if you dine in. Delivery and pick up don't get it. But you can buy a soup and they will deliver it or let you pick it up. So basically, unless you eat in, you get double charged for your soup. This makes it more expensive than their competition. But until I find another place with equal quality food (which I have not yet), we'll keep allowing them to gouge us. It is that good. read more

I have been going to the Ying Cafe since about 1998. Unfortunately the new owners for about a year now have destroyed what was such a great old-school Chinese restaurant. It was always very clean and now it is not. Some dishes that I've ordered for years don't come out as they used to different sauces, ingredients, off flavors, and too much oil. I had high hopes of this restaurant based on the previous reviews but ended up very disappointed with the quality of the food. I ordered gerneral tso chicken and fried rice. The chicken was very dry and so tough, most of it was inedible. I actually had to spit out the food because it couldn't be chewed enough to swallow. The fried rice was not like any fried rice I have ever eaten before. Also very dry and absolutely no flavor to it. Overall, I believe this experience ranks up there with the worst I've ever endured. A few years ago, we got take-out from Ying - we got some wonton soup. It was from-the-sun hot and we didn't love it. So we've not gone back in a few years. But a couple of months ago I was craving KUNG PAO chicken (caps because you can't just speak it, you've gotta holler it!) but didn't feel like driving and waiting at the national chain. I am SO glad I gave Ying another chance! On the recommendation of a lot of other folks here, I generally go with the General Tsao's Chicken. It comes as a dinner special with an egg roll, choice hot and sour or egg drop soup and choice of white or fried rice for under $10. The General Tsao's chicken is SO stinking good! The chicken is served up hot, with the outside covered in delicious sauce and lightly crispy. The chicken itself is cuts of dark meat with great consistency. And the broccoli looks simply pretty - all bright green and delicious. The egg roll is plenty tasty - light and hot. I don't love the soup choices (no matter where they come from), but found out tonight that they'll sub an extra egg roll. When I've gone through for to-go, the order is ready within 10 minutes. Hooray! On tonight's visit, the service is very friendly, speedy and attentive. We were in and out within 30 minutes, including shrimp toast as an appetizer (deliciously crispy), soup, our entrees, check, and about 4 refills on tea. It's generally pretty empty, so that helps get guests in and out in no time. I'm so glad Ying is around the corner. And I'm SO glad we gave them another chance! read more

we decided to dine-in at this restaurant a little while ago since we decided we wanted to try something new. We're fans of New China, but we're really feeling the whole dive-y chinese restuarant atmosphere that night. The restaurant was pretty quiet but like most people have already mentioned, the service is amazingly fast - to the point that I kind of wished they could have taken more time so I could have enjoyed our soup and appetizer more. I got the orange chicken and hubs got their beef and broccoli plate. Our plate came with hot and sour soup and a spring roll plus we ordered some crab rangoon on the side. Everything came out one right after the other - fresh and steaming hot. Their food wasnt the absolute best Chinese I've had but it was good, hot, and fresh which is always a plus to me. So disappointing. This has been our favorite lunch spot for years and years. It has gone so far downhill. Their hot and sour soup used to be the best. Now, it tastes like cheap buffet soup. Lunch special was good with a variety of options to choose from at a reasonable price. I had the shrimp, chicken, beef combination with fried rice. I also ordered an extra a cup of Wonton soup. My choices were good, especially the rice noodles. The Wonton soup had a good flavor but the vegetables in it were to big. The cheese puff that comes with the special was tough. The service was quick and friendly and the dinning area was clean. The real negative for me was the coloring books, messy papers in one the booths right in front of the entrance way. The next booth had boxes of fortune cookies and other dry items stacked up. Not a professional first impression of the restaurant. My GO TO Chinese Take Out restaurant! I've eaten here so many times I've lost count! I'm not a huge fan of any chicken dishes I've had here so I tend to order beef or pork. They have a twice cooked pork dish that I absolutely love and had never tried before them. I also love the beef fried rice, the beef lo-mein, teriyaki beef, and a spicy shrimp dish. Also I can't place an order without a side of crab rangoon; theirs is my favorite!!! Another bonus if you're close - THEY DELIVER! The ONLY reasons I'm not giving 5 Stars (because I truly love this place!) is because I have noticed the portions getting smaller, prices rising, food isn't as fresh at times, and less coming with meals over the past few years. I wanted pork fried rice, but he argued that was extra and my choices is either steamed or fried, no pork. Ordered 2 wonton soups and I don't know what it is that is in front of me. Definitely not wonton soup. Called them back and they claim every wonton soup is made differently. It's wonton, in a broth, with some scallions. Not rocket science. After the first visit to this establishment, we had to go back the following night for more of the deliciousness of Ying's menu items. Not only the taste of these dishes, but the portions as well went above and beyond our expectations. The Beef Egg Foo Young was everything it could be. The second night we opted for beef egg rolls and the combination fried rice - Shrimp, chicken, and beef. Again, the amount of food was more than enough for two people. Prices are reasonable. Pleasantly surprising. My entire family of eight ordered delivery, and I think only one was disappointed with his order. They told us it'd 30-35 minutes on the phone, but the food arrived in under 20. Egg rolls came with some of the dinners, and they were okay, but I've had better. Mongolian beef was pretty good; orange chicken was actually delicious, and I don't usually care for that dish. It had a very REAL taste, completely unlike the orange chicken at Panda Express (for reference). When ordering take-out from a Chinese place, we're never sure what the portions are going to be like--some places fill half the take-out box with the meat and half with the rice or noodles; some places (like Lucky Chan in Sachse) fill an entire take-out box with meat and serve the rice on the side. Since all the reviews said they have large portions, we decided to order six dishes for the eight of us. It was more than enough. The food doesn't come in the average white take-out box, and the boxes for the meat are about half that size. The rice comes in little Chinese folding boxes. The general consensus was that this is much better than the average Chinese take-out, and we will definitely order from there again. read more

The egg rolls are more like spring rolls here, which is a huge minus for me. The fried is good , BBQ spareribs a very good mine were a little over done. Also no Chinese fried noodles here or fried wontons . So I tried there fried dumpling they were awesome 5 stars. The moo goo gai pan was also very good. I love love love this place! Great food for a great price! I always call and order to go and I never have any issues (workers usually have an accent, so speak clearly! So they understand). Blown away by the good reviews of this place so I decided to come here for my 30th Birthday dinner. Wow....will never make that mistake again. Let's begin with the faint strange noise that was coming from the kitchen -- sounded like caged chickens in the back. I'm not kidding. Freaked out, we still ordered dinner and decided to make the best of it because I mean I figured if they have live chickens in the back then at least it'll be fresh right?? WRONG! The general tsao's chicken tasted off in the "I'm not sure what kind of meat I'm eating" kind of way -- my friend ordered beef with broccoli. The beef was chewy and slimy with raw broccoli. Overall the experience was totally sub par and really kind of put a downer on the evening. It was actually so bad that we paid in cash and just left our food minus 5 or so bites on the table and went to another restaurant that we knew was good to restart the night. If you're into Chinese with heavily sugary sauces and questionable meat products be my guest and head to Yings. I looked at the menu and there dinner specials seemed high $$ 9.50 so i bit the bullet and ordered the chicken lowmain and orange chicken, took about 10 min . This is a really good place to get some very tasty Asian food. I can't remember ever being treated negatively by any of the staff. Most of the staff gives you a smile. I will say, its only 4 stars because they are fairly pricey... granted, you do get a pretty good amount of food, but I've ordered and received the same amount of food at other places, for a cheaper price. And, it all tasted about the same. However, I go here, cause it's just a few thousand feet from me. I don't believe I've ever seen this place very crowded, when I walk in to carry out my order, but each time I go inside, the place looks pretty clean. I really liked this place, but I just went there and there was a young man behind the counter taking orders, I wanted the Bar B Que spare ribs, $7.95 and 2 egg rolls, $2.80 order total should have been 10.75 plus tax, I was told that my total was $22.75, I asked how and he said that the prices had gone up, I was looking at an old menu, I picked up the menu on the counter and showed him the prices and he said he could not help that the computer was telling him $22.75, that is just plain dishonest, I was just in there last Friday and ordered the same thing from the lady that is always there, $10.75 plus tax, needless to say I did not purchase anything from there, that is a shame he could cost her to lose customers. read more

"Dear Ying Cafe, I'm sorry I misjudged you without ever having visited." You know how you sort of have a preconceived notion about a place sometimes just because of where it is and don't go there? No? Maybe it's just me, then. Ying Cafe is in a culinary abyss along a butt-ugly stretch of Rufe Snow. I've passed by this place I don't know how many times poo-pooing it because of its proximity to the local Goodwill dropoff center (Ms Snob). Well, of course I was so wrong. I was in the area and in the mood for Chinese for lunch the other day and decided to give it a go. I mean, the other Yelpers couldn't all be wrong (could they?). First of all, when you walk into Ying Cafe, it's open, well-lit from the big front windows and very pleasant and clean looking. I was immediately greeted and seated with a menu. My iced tea was brought out mere moments later. They have over 30 lunch specials and all are $6.50 (drink not included). What is included is the entree (I had Shrimp with Chinese Vegetables), fried or steamed rice, noodles that looked like mai fun, an egg roll, a cheese puff, and soup. The shrimp and vegetables were very fresh and tasty, although I wouldn't have minded more vegetables. Actually, everything was good. I had hot and sour soup which was actually both hot and sour (wow!). The eggroll was tasty and amazingly ungreasy. The cheese puff was kind of a surprise and not something I would normally order, but it was good, as well. It was a deep fried wonton filled with some kind of flavored cream cheese. Again, not greasy but nice and puffy. Both the cheese puff and the eggroll are obviously cooked when your order is placed. The staff was super friendly and on the ball. My iced tea was never empty and they checked on me a couple of times to see if I needed anything. While I wouldn't call the food I had amazing or anything, it was very good. The restaurant is pleasant and the service is excellent. I will be back. I just wish they were closer to my house so I could get delivery. read more

My wife is Chinese and we are pretty particular about Chinese restaurants. This place passes muster on most scores. We take out 90% of the time that we order from them. Their dishes are well prepared and tasty. Their menu is a bit skewed toward American chinese food dishes for our tastes but they do them really well. We (I) especially love the hot and sour soup. They have a weird policy where, if you do take out, they don't give you the soup that you pay for that accompanies it per the menu. We get around that by ordering chef's specialities that come WITHOUT soup and have larger portion of the entrees. That way we don't pay for anything that we don't get. Then I order large soups separately. Very strange policy. But there it is..... Overall, we love this place. read more
