Spicy Malatang with mild spice level
Kathleen W.

This was the first time I've ever had Malatang where you get to self pick all the ingredients yourself. I like how you can add as much or as little of each ingredient as you want. When we arrived at opening, I was surprised there was a lot of people there already. It could get a little crowded at the ingredients bar but I liked the variety of items so if one area was crowded you can go to another area to get stuff. I added fatty beef, lotus root, bok choy, Napa cabbage, potato, fish tofu, and potato noodles. The total came out to be $20 with tax and I chose the spicy beef bone broth with mild spice. After you pay, you get a number and when your order is ready, they bring it to you at the table. You can also make a sauce at the sauce bar to dip your meat and veggies in. Everything came out scorching hot in less than 10 minutes. The broth was rich, beefy, and slightly spicy and it made all the ingredients so savory. I didn't even need a sauce as the broth was flavorful enough. The meat was fatty and tender and the veggies were fresh. Everything was so delicious and I'd definitely come back again!

so good and good fast service. i like the amount of options and how the meat looks like it's on the fresher side, but don't get the corn sausage, it comes out weird. i would also recommend to get extra spicy because it's not very spicy.

Great experience. You select the items you want in the hot pot. You find a table after you order and put your number up. Order did not take long and the broth was good. Broth could be cooked longer to get a really great taste but it was good. Comes in a huge bowl and it is a lot. There are a lot of small tables so you can move them around. Music is play, the door keeps getting left open and today was cold.

Classic Beef Bone Broth

I've walked by this place so many times so I was very happy that I finally got to try it. This is my first malatang in NYC and I thought it was interesting that this was a soup version as I feel like a lot of the other ones I've been to is a dry pot. The way this place works is that you grab a bowl where you fill with ingredients to then pay by the pound. Mine turned out to be around $25 which was around 1.3 pounds worth of food. I feel like I definitely could've gotten less next time because it was way too much food and I ended up eating it for 2 meals. I really liked the variety of options they had as well as the sauce bar which was delicious! The soup base, Classic Herbal Beef Bone Broth, was also quite good and not too spicy even though I got mild. I will say that I'm somebody who doesn't like meat as much so it felt like I was not getting my money's worth as I kept grabbing vegetables. Overall, fantastic and fast eat and I will definitely be back!

I almost have no words because when I tell you I ate every bite of my soup like it was the first and last meal of my life... OMg it was so satisfying and delicious. Mind you- I friggen love soup but more importantly, the most fantastic thing about hot pot is of course you get to design it to your taste so this was my first time here I was instructed to grab the bowl grab some tongs pick at least a pound of ingredients and then choose the broth. So I grabbed my typical array of my favorite mushrooms, the wood ear plus plus, I absolutely love pumpkin in my hot pot now so I grabbed a good handful of those slices. I'm so glad I tried the hand pulled noodles because when I made my own chili oil noodles as a side dish to the soup after receiving the bowl and tossing in a huge serving of green onions, cilantro, and garlic, and then keeping another side dish of the oyster sauce with the garlic marinade to dip my beef in oh my God it was just amazing. I had white fish. I had everything you can see in the picture some fish cake some cabbage and it was just so satisfying. I can't wait to go back. Try it and you'll see.

Really good! FYI that their mild is more of a medium in terms of spice (but you can try to scoop out the layer of chili oil on top if it ends up too spicy). We came during lunch and the pricing ($15.99/lb) was not bad! The minimum weight is 0.8 lb, which was the perfect amount of food for me. I love being able to cater how much I buy for how hungry I'm feeling.

Came by to get a late night malatang fix. The interior is cozy but there is plenty of seating. The buffet is self serve and your items are weighted before they are cooked. They have a decent selection of meats and vegetarian options although I wish there was more variety in the meats. The buffet was a bit messy late night and the sauce bar was pretty chaotic. Service was minimal but quick. The packaging for take out was pretty solid. Overall I thought the broth was a bit too bland and their sauce bar didn't offer too many options. Pricing was very reasonable by weight.

Decent malatang place in the city for a fair price! There is a big fridge with all kinds of food, and you just put them all in your bowl and go pay by the pound. It's a fun concept, but as a person who loves to fill the bowl with mostly veggies and noodles and a little bit of meat, I feel like I'm losing out on value by not getting more meat. However, it's so cheap I guess it doesn't really matter. I've tried both the spicy beef bone broth as well as the dry pot. I think the bone broth was ok--nothing too special. However, I liked the dry pot quite a bit. While it was a little sweet for my liking, it was overall quite good! I think I will continue getting the dry pot here. One thing to note tho, my dry pot noodle was a bit undercooked

been wanting to try ygf malatang for a while and ended up disappointed when i finally did. you pick the items for your bowl and then pay by weight. the service is very quick, as i got my malatang within 5-7 minutes. it gets busy but i was still able to grab a table, though with people coming in and out, tables need to get wiped down. i got the tomato malatang option. the broth was super rich and aromatic, but the produce was lacking. the napa cabbage had a strange texture and didn't feel fresh, also there were some food items in my malatang what i know i didn't add to my bowl, which is quite concerning.

Dry Mix - pretty tasty
Sallie D.

Pretty tasty - pick your own ingredients in a big bowl then hand over to cashier to weigh and cook. You get 3 choices - two with broth and one as a dry mix (stir fry). There's also a self serve sauce bar. Food was fresh and sauce tasted great. 4 stars because the place had some flies buzzing around.

"Spicy mix"

They have a great selection of items here, and the buffet was clean and well stocked. The products all appeared to be fairly fresh and decent quality. I got the "spicy mix" which I thought was going to be like the dry pot I've had other places but it was a little different. It was definitely wetter than the dry pot I've had at Mala Project and in Flushing and it was not spicy even a little bit. I have a fairly low tolerance for spice, but I still found this to be not spicy at all. It also seemed to have sesame sauce mixed in, which I was not aware was a usual ingredient in dry pot. There was no mala flavor, but overall it was well seasoned and tasted good, even if it wasn't what I expected. I appreciate that they also offer a robust selection of toppings for your bowl, such as cilantro and ground peanuts. My bowl came out to $27 and could have been consumed for one large meal or two smaller ones. The prices seem reasonable to me and the service was friendly. Perhaps I need to try the soup version, because it seemed like most other people in the restaurant were enjoying that.

Drypot, about $35

A hotspot for NYU students, this place is good for a relatively quick meal at a decent price. You load a bowl with ingredients at a station that looks like the grocery store produce shelf, then at checkout select from either 2 broths (spiciness customizable) or a drypot. They cook your ingredients and serve in a giant bowl within a few minutes. Price is by weight - $15 per lb - and I spent about $25. Someone else in my group spent around $15, and another close to $35. For me the cost was a bit more than I anticipated, but still ok *for NY prices* (and I guess I eat a lot). 7:30pm on a Thursday was quite busy but the line moves fast and table turnover is quite high. Some things to keep in mind: I think there's a good variety of veg/meat/seafood/tofu/noodles but not so much for broth. I would also recommend choosing the beef bone broth over the tomato, which got lukewarm reception from my group. The space is crammed and so are the tables, but it's great for a casual meetup. They offer large takeout containers as well in case you went overboard selecting ingredients. And for transparency, they offer a free drink from the fridge (think a can of Coke) if you leave a 5 star review, so ratings may be slightly inflated. Overall I recommend this place if you're looking for some hearty, spicy malatang at a decent price.

dry hot pot
Sandy D.

I think more people came here for the soupy hot pots. I came for the dry hot pot craving it, but it was not what I expected. Their base seems to be loaded with sesame paste that I wish I looked into more closely. The flavor was very overwhelming, and the texture really ruined it for me. The spiciness did kind of help distract me. It was a chill quick eats place though, where you can just pick up whatever you want on your own.
