Well - we had to go see a music school engagement at the Waterfront today and decided to have a little lunch. First as a appetizer I order the Grandma Connie's Home made meatballs ($15.50) two meatballs, about 1/2 teaspoon of ricotta and some kind of marinara sauce that was more like tomato water than anything that resembled an Italian gravy - Horrible! Then wife said forget that and lets get sandwiches; ok - she got the Short Rib Grilled Cheese ($20.00), and I got the Bourbon Chicken Wrap ($17.50) - they were Both Horrible! Grand kids got the chicken fingers ($18.00) and they were a bit over cooked but tasty. Overall opinion = Food is way overpriced for the quality, flavors are blah to horrible and just no worth another trip. Too many good food places around, this one is huge pricy disappointment........

The weather was great..even with the complimentary downpour day to let the skin come off sizzle mode..just perfect. We were a large family group... family coming in from NY, NM, Ca and Germany. We pushed the limits in space but with the backyard patio area, rooftop hot tub soaking deck (special accolades to that), the ocean so close and so many places you could walk, bike, paddle to we never at all came to in your face situations... which we all know with family is usually inevitable. We wanted to do something special for our Mom (Omi) for her birthday so we took Mary Ann and Tom's referral and hired the caterer that they suggested... we did a luau theme and they came to the house with the pig roast complete with Hawaiian veges and salads. I for one was amazed that we actually surprised her but I do believe we really pulled it off. We were initially hesitant to rent because of landowners sharing the same house..but we started our search late and there weren't many options to accommodate our large group so we took the chance. Couldn't have been any farther from the fears we had to reality. Always friendly and helpful.. never intrusive or controlling. By the time we left it felt like we were leaving old friends.... the hot donuts Mary Ann brought us from an old time LBI donut shop, the morning before we left sealed the deal! Our family grew up summers in LBI..staying with friends that owned and/or our family renting for weeks at a time. I think I can speak for our family in saying we came home that week. A wonderful magical place in our memories. Lucky me got to share it with my granddaughter while my Mom (Omi) is still with us and oh so big a center of our family. 4 generations of LBI addicts.... what better place to enjoy family!

Well mannered , knowledgeable about the menu , sincere all well moving with a purpose. He treated us a lonely table of 2 like we were his only priority well simultaneously handling a 10 , 4 and 6 top. We sat in the side dining room facing the kitchen pass. We watched 6 pros handle business. Minimal words just chin gestures and some pointing. Some serious heat was moving thru that kitchen being passed to runners that kept that fire alive calling for garnish extra sauce and accoutrements as if it was Orchestra.Food was phenomenal. Egregious portions. Flavors layer. Sweet salty fatty creamy one after another nothing standing too far out or too far behind. The spice in the seafood dish was about right to let you know it was there but not over stay it's welcome. Plump seafood with a clean finish. We shared a bite with each other and went for seconds. The dessert a catcher's mitt size of chunk of old style ricotta cheese cake. Mind you all this was happening when they were serving a wedding of 50 in the back room. Two cons. The a/c wasn't working it was a little warm. I won't harp too much on that we had extreme weather the day prior. Number 2 . Truffle oil. The table next to us ordered truffle fries. I was there as a part of a youth social justice retreat for 5 days and there simply could not have been a space that better fit our needs than this. The feel of the place is green, rustic chic. The center comes with two lodges with around 14 rooms with at least two meds (a few rooms have bunks) - one lodge has a meeting room equipped with its own fridge and water cooler. In the main building there is an industrial kitchen already stocked with all the pots, pans, utensils you can ever need (including spices, oils, essences, etc.), a spacious dinning hall, the fireside room which is beautifully decorated complete with sofas, a fireplace, and two pianos. There is also an external meeting site called the Cone House which is an ideal meditation, congregation, workshop location with its soft hardwood floors, comfortable floor chairs, and more. There is also a saltwater pool, many hammocks, a bonfire location, and more that I am momentarily forgetting to mention! The staff have always been VERY friendly and accommodating to us and generally lets us have ownership of the space in a way that truly feels like home. If you are looking for spaces to have a small wedding, family gatherings/reunions, or a religious retreat, this is the place to go!! They are looking for more customers lately so definitely go check out this hidden gem P.S. the bathrooms in both lodges have been newly renovated and they are BEAUTIFUL, functional, and very comfortable.

The highlights were definitely the food and tea. Everything was delicious, and I appreciated that my dietary restrictions were accommodated without any issues. There was also ample parking, and our server was pleasant. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment was the murder mystery itself. We've attended several murder mystery dinners over the years, and this was the least engaging cast we've experienced. The acting lacked the energy and immersion we were expecting, especially considering the cost of the event. Since the performance is the main attraction, we had hoped for a much stronger production. While our server was kind, the service could have been more attentive. We had to ask for water refills and for our tea to be replenished with hot water. Those are small touches that guests should be offered rather than having to request, especially during a tea service. I was also disappointed that wine was only available by the bottle instead of by the glass. Lastly, my companion and I spent a great deal of time creating our costumes for the event. We stepped away briefly to explore one of the beautifully decorated rooms, and during that time the costume contest was held. We either didn't hear or weren't given a clear announcement before it began, so we completely missed the opportunity to participate. Better communication would have made a big difference. Overall, the venue, food, and tea were excellent, but the quality of the performance and some aspects of the service and event organization left us disappointed. With improvements in those areas, this could be a truly memorable experience.

I called them and expected them to say that they had no vegan or gluten-free options. But the owner, Vicki, answered the phone and told me they had vegan and gluten-free tea service, including scones, sandwiches, desserts, and more. I was shocked! My mom and I went there for lunch about a week later. Our waitress was so knowledgeable about the house and the food options and she answered all of our questions. That was the beginning of a long history of coming to the Mathis House. I have since brought groups of friends ranging from five to twenty. We have attended a few Afternoon Teas, including the holiday sessions; Cinco de Mayo, and a Masquerade Murder Mystery. I recently celebrated my birthday there. My favorite thing about the house is how we can view the lovely decorations. The house is decorated to reflect every season. Plus, I love how vintage and classy the atmosphere feels.
