Gave Ye's Sushi a try as I couldn't get into my preferred restaurants, it was a Saturday evening and I hadn't planned ahead and made a reservation. I had eaten at Ye's quite a few years ago when it was a combination AYCE sushi with order by tablet and buffet with salads, deserts, soups, etc. The main hostess was quite pleasant but the servers were quite grumpy just dropping off dishes without a single word. Servers didn't even clear plates on a regular basis and so piled up at the table. I was surprised at the good selection of Sashimi they had on the menu including tuna which many places do not have anymore due to the high cost. So selection was quite good. However, presentation was very poor, they don't make any attempt to make the food look good or provide a suitable sauce for the dish presented. They don't know how to make tempura either and their offerings are heavy and greasy. IMO this is because the restaurant has Chinese roots and not Japanese. Another gripe I would have is with the condiments they use, the ginger and wasabi is dried out and the soy sauce is so salty, more like a Chinese cooking soy sauce, than a sweeter Japanese soy sauce used for sushi and sashimi. Anyway, wasn't the best experience and given the choice would opt for one of my other favorites in the area. Will have to plan better in the future and make reservations. read more

Was skeptical of the place because of reviews, but it was a solid dining experience. Sushi was good and a wide variety of different dishes. We had unagi very good . A few rolls also good . The tempura was great and we slide in some Fried rice was a little oily but overall a good effort . Service was stellar and attentive . Ordering from the iPad is easy and efficient. Extremely disappointing ever since the renovations turned it from a buffet to a normal AYCE-style order with limited buffet items (eg. fruits, salad, soup, dessert, ice cream). There are tablets to order with, but they're large and bulky and once an order is submitted, the server sometimes takes a while to confirm the order. The food - the salmon sashimi was frozen (I suppose this is preferable to the pest problem at Itamae). The salmon lover/rose sushi was a very lazy ball of rice that easily fell apart with a slice of raw salmon sitting on top similar to salmon sushi and a drop of mayo. It's a far cry from the salmon rose that actually looks like a flower. The Salmon Tatakie was interesting, but is lacking compared to Kinkaku Izakaya's carpaccio. I'm not convinced that Ye's Buffet cares anymore about the quality of their sushi, which is unfortunate since there is so much new competition in the area. Service was also lacking. One of the waitresses was not able to understand our question on what sushi they had brought us, and even struggled to answer the question in Mandarin (In Mandarin: "This is Sushi." "I don't know what the name of the sushi is." ) The men's washroom stall had no lock on the door (or any way to keep the door shut actually). There is a 10% student discount. But this place isn't worth your money anymore. The Ye's Sushi on King St. is a better choice for cheap AYCE sushi and Kinkaku Izakaya for quality AYCE sushi. read more

As the saying goes, don't judge a book by it's cover. This stylish new buffet offers spacious seating areas with modern design. Servers are also nice and patient. As you walk by the buffet tables, delicious chinese and japanese dishes await your hungry body to obtain as many items as possible that can fit on to your plate. Sushi and Sashimi are ordered at the table which is a GREAT idea because that guarantees the freshness of the food. I found most buffet table food to be quite gross. The fried chicken had purple/black bones which indicated that the chicken had diseases. The tofu scallop was sour which means the tofu had gone bad. The other dishes were filled with MSG as I came home running straight to the tap for water. One big turnoff was that their deserts were not made in-house. I saw a lady fill the dessert table with brownies, napoleans, and cakes from a cardboard box. I felt like I was eating some sort of mass made desserts that are served at those $7.99 AYCE lunch chinese restaurants in small towns. I have a feeling they cut down their kitchen for more seating area. The place definitely feels a lot bigger. I am giving it 3 stars mainly for it's atmosphere and service. read more

I've been to Ye's a couple of times for lunch, and both times were OK. Nothing amazing to blow me away, but the food is pretty decent, and I found the fish to be fresh. The dessert bar is really fun with the bite sized treats. There's even a fro yo machine! The service was good, and they are very quick with the orders. This is Canadian style Chinese food or Canadian style Japanese food. They use the same sauce for all the dishes and they tastes the same; and lots of dishes are not the same as their display. A lot of food additives.... Overall, way too sweet. Will never go there again. read more

The Best Place On A Tuesday :) I have never been to an AYCE Sushi Restaurant that has a Cheap Day. Tuesday is the day for this location in Waterloo. I also haven't been to a place that has a buffet style salad and dessert bar that isn't on the iPad for ordering. Salads and Desserts are at your fingertips and I can't forget about the clown that makes balloon animals for all the kids and their families who take advantage of the cheap dinner buffet. So disappointed. This place used to be an easy 4 star buffet. Then they did a renovation and made it the same as their other locations. It is not horrible, but truly generic, and slightly sub par among the KW ACYE sushi scene. I used to go here once a week, but now I prefer sushi star or spring roll to Ye's offering. I used to enjoy this place a lot, but it all went down hill after the renovations. If you are going to go here, definitely DO NOT GO here when it's slow / empty. The food gets cold, the sushi doesn't taste very good, and it's just awful. The service is good though. My friend went here on a Friday evening, and said that the sushi was good. It was my first visit, and most likely will be my last. Most of the rolls I had were soggy and just not at all appetizing. The cheesecake was obviously a frozen store bought brand (it was still frozen when I bit into it). Son I think next time, I'll spend the extra money and go elsewhere. read more

Came here for the first time with some friends who are regulars, they waved about this place. I was disappointed when I left. I was full, but the sushi and other food that I ordered wasn't as satisfying as I hoped. First of all, there were no more snow crab, which was apparently no longer in season. Which isn't true because it always comes in frozen anyway. The sushi that we ordered was okay, wasn't mind blowing. The service was mediocre. Took a while to get served, get our water and wasabi. The place looks really nice when you walk in and the set up is also nice. I'd give it another chance, maybe I came on a bad day. It looks like it could have potential. read more

I should have checked it out before coming because I didn't realize how much more they have available for dinner/on weekends, especially with the hot dishes at the buffet. So much variety! Service isn't the best, but since it's a buffet there isn't a lot of interaction. The sushi is really good, the spicy salmon roll and the eel are the best ones on the menu. Their special Dragon rolls look enticing but aren't the best tasting, they're overwhelming. The only critique I have is that their nigiri is not quite as good as the nigiri at 168 Sushi. Well, we decided to try it because there was a special on. I did very much enjoy the crab salad, (that was about the only item I enjoyed) - don't remember the desserts so I guess they weren't much to speak of. We tried a number of items, a couple of specialty rolls, some hot items. What I remember most about the whole experience is that the food when it arrived looked nothing like the pictures on the ipad! I mean you would not recognize them and I actually questioned the server. The final straw - I was so looking forward to the strawberry cream roll for dessert. It arrived looking disgusting. The fresh strawberries in the picture turned out to be loads of crappy sweet strawberry jam. We couldn't eat it. FED UP! I am a good customer of this establishment, and it has gone to the dogs, and I am fed up with it. I have spent hundreds, probably even thousands of my own hard earned money at this place over the years. It's more than I care to admit, given this review, and I've had enough. This place is ridiculous! Went last night against my better judgement, but the group I was with decided on it. What do customers expect at any establishment? Good friendly and efficient service, and quality product. I don't think that is too much to ask? We arrived at Ye's at around 5 PM, so just before the rush began (at around 5;30 PM.) We were a party of 4, with 3 others arriving shortly. We asked for a table of 7, and were brought to a table for 6. Being resilient and problem solvers as we are, we pushed the 3 small tables closer to the wall, and borrowed a chair from our neighbours to add to the end of the table. This sounds like not a huge deal, but there were other empty tables of 8 around that we could have been sat at, and yes, I'm sure if we would have asked, they could have put us there. But 1)Not really the point, and 2)as I said, resilient we are, so we just made it work. Next, Drinks! We ordered our drinks, 2 waters, 2 soft drinks, and a beer (for one of the party who was minutes away.) While my sister and I visited the washroom to wash up, and then the buffet for soup and salad, the drinks all arrived at our table. Both of the soft drinks were flat, which, fine, it happens, fountains run out of CO2. This isn't a problem, except that you don't see a waitress again for at least 30 minutes (this is a generous estimation.) You have people bringing your food that you've ordered from the iPad, but if you try to ask them anything, they say something along the lines of "OK, be right back," and then you see them serving tables near you for the rest of the night, with no resolution to your request. The rest of our party arrives after about 15 minutes, and no one comes to take their drink orders. After 10 minutes of waiting, one of our party gets up to go find a waiter to get beverages, and to replace the flat ones. They spoke to one of the hostesses, who said "Ok, be right back," and then never sent anyone, or never came herself. Finally, we are able to flag someone down to order drinks from (this is about 40 minutes after our initial drink order, and 15 minutes after the request was made to the hostess.) This gentleman returned a few minutes later to inform us that the machine was down, and it would be a little while before it was back up and running so he could bring us our drinks, but then quickly flitted off again before we could ask for water or non-carbonated beverages in the interim. We were eventually able to flag him down again to ask for waters until the other drinks could be served. 10 minutes later, he brought a tray full of water and soft drinks. This is now more than 1/2 an hour that some of our party went with out drinks! In the meantime, another beer had been ordered on the iPad. The beer was not at our table 40 minutes later, (the iPad let us see exactly what time it was ordered,) so one of us went up to the bar to ask for it. (We had forgotten about it in all the chaos and confusion and frustration with the soft drinks.) Another response of "Ok, be right back," was given, and finally, after asking again, 10 minutes later, the beer was brought to the table. That was just the drinks! While all of this is going on, our multiple orders of sushi, maki, tempura, rice, appetizers, and various other dishes are arriving at our table. Servers coming from behind with no acknowledgement or announcement that they were there. Servers setting dishes on the edge of the table, to the point where it's almost knocked off. Servers thrusting plates aggressively past our faces, again without letting us know they were behind us at all. One of our party almost was hit in the face by one of the dishes. One of our dishes, the Tempura crab roll, arrived, looking as though it had been dropped, and then just unceremoniously thrown back onto the plate. This behaviour went on for our entire visit. As there were 7 of us, all ordering multiple dishes, there were quite a few dirty dishes. These were not cleared once from our table by a member of staff. Instead, (being resilient and problem solvers as we are,) we began piling them onto an empty table nearby, just so we would be able to have the rest of our food delivered. Before we resorted to this, at one point, one particular stack of the same size dishes was 7 high, (No exaggeration.) The table we were piling them onto was a table for 4, and was full by the end of our visit. Finally, cashing out. Because of all of the kerfuffle with the drinks, more soft drinks had been marked down than what were ordered, therefore my sister and her husband were charged for an extra soft drink. We went on Saturday March 11 around 7:00 pm. We had no problem getting a seat and the waitress went through how the all-you-can-eat menu worked with the ipad. The food was great, and most of the staff were okay. However, the server bringing food to our table were very abrupt, rude, and made for a very uncomfortable dining experience. The servers sort of flung the orders on the table. I was sipping my soup when the server shoved the sushi we ordered right under my elbows. They didn't say excuse me or even acknowledge. Considering the restaurant wasn't that busy they were also slow at clearing the dirty plates. Go for the good food, but if you expect any level of polite service do not! read more

After showing proper credentials they still refused to seat me and my friends stating there was an "incident" with someone bringing in a house pet. If you like sushi, then this place offers a great selection. However, we went there mainly for the Chinese buffet on a Saturday evening. The buffet had a decent selection but we didn't find the food to be very good overall (a number of items were quite good, but overall we didn't enjoy the meal). The desserts were particularly bland. It was our first time at the restaurant and we pointed that out to the hostess when we arrived. She pointed out roughly how the menu works and then left us to look at the buffet. Unfortunately once the hostess left us at our table the service pretty much stopped there. I had to get up and get the waitress to order our drinks, get up again to ask for an extra napkin, and for everything else we wanted. No one checked on us at all. We kind of had the impression that the staff didn't know who was assigned to our table. During the meal I joked with my wife that "you get what you pay for", thinking that this was one of those $16 buffets. When we got the final bill we found that they charged the same as the Mandarin chain of restaurants. The Mandarin not only has a much wider selection of food, but the atmosphere is more pleasant, it's not as "dark", and the service is 10x better. We know where we'll be going in future. read more

The mix of AYCE buffet and table order (you use a tablet) is a very nice idea, and the offerings are decent. Most of the a la carte dishes - the stirfries, the fried items, the skewers, etc. are just fine and come out hot and fresh, which is nice. BUT. BUT!!! I have eaten there 5 times since their renovation and each and every time, the rice for the sushi comes out STONE COLD. This indicates to me that it is being premade and chilled in the refridgerator to wait for orders. The result is really really bad sushi. So go for the "other stuff" but the sushi isn't worth it. read more

We went on a Sunday for Lunch back in December 2013. It was different from what it used to be. I found that there was a good selection of food to choose from. I would have to say that with the Chinese food that is offered you would figure it to be piping hot, nope. It was warm or luke warm. The sushi was great. The deserts, well, half of them I couldn't even figure out what they were. I'll go back a 2nd time to try it out, but not in a rush to go again. read more

This place is so hit and miss. I miss all you can eat sushi, so I go here. Then I remember why I stayed away. Slow service, they sometimes forget things or just bring them REALLY late, and I'm pretty sure I got food poisoning after eating here once in 2008. When this was Ye's Sushi, it was a solid four stars out of five (only a true full serve sushi restaurant would get five stars). Now it is a confusing mix of buffet - slash - order sushi & sashimi. The staff seem unhappy, the buffet food is totally inconsistent - some fresh, some "way to old" to even consider eating - too much time under heat lamps. Ye's made a big mistake with the renovation and expansion into a different format - should have stuck with the excellent service and atmposphere of the original Ye's Sushi. I was a regular, and brought many friends to the old place. I came here once - and will never come again. read more

Tried it for the first time since it reverted back to the AYCE sushi model. Very dissatisfied with the food and the service. Food, when it came, was sub par. It takes a long time once you place an order for it to come. When an order got delayed delayed waitress said "sometimes the computer sends it to wrong table". Took mother to Ye's for her birthday. Nice display and nice surroundings. Food was flavourful, but the hot foods were not very hot. By the time we got too our seats, the hot items on our plate were only warm. We mentioned this to waitress & she said she'd look into things. She never got back to us. Used to frequent this place before it became a dreaded buffet:( The sushi was not bad, but they had limited varieties out, and our waiter never mentioned that we could also 'order' sushi from the menu. The other (mostly fried foods) were greasy, stale, and gross. Everything sort of tasted like it was fried in 'pork' flavoured oil, which is especially not awesome when you're vegetarian.
