Sushi was very good. The place was a little small, but had a great ambiance. The server was attentive and checked on us often. Will definitely be back!

Hidden gem in Waterloo, especially since it's a bus ride away from the University area. However if you want to down some great sushi this is the place! Went for lunch, and there are a variety of options to choose from. The presentation of the dishes give an authentic feeling, but can be a bit wasteful (ie greens with most non sushi dishes). The sushi itself tastes great, and tried almost one of everything with a friend! The ones with crab/kani were average, but everything else was spot on and delicious! Favourite was the Volcano roll. The handrolls had a little too much rice, and were served flat on a board. From where I worked, we had special holders for these which would be cool to see and much more user friendly. I especially loved the Deep Fried Squid, as they were in perfect bite sized and were dressed in a great sauce. All of the deep fried items were good in particular, as they use a crumbly breading that works great (ie deep fried tempura). The skewers are also great! The dessert has less options but was satisfying. The sago sweet soup is overhyped, as it tastes mostly like condensed milk. I would recommend the coconut /sesame ice cream! Otherwise service was good (wasn't that busy when I went) and serving was quite fast!

Moving from Toronto to kw area we were looking to find new places to try sushi. First was kens which was great but their speed is not optimal and cost is high. We tried sushi stars today. Overall easy to order and their pricing was good. Order was completed in 40 minutes as promised Good: quantity - presentation - read and deliver on notes Opportunity: they use a LOT of rice in their rolls. It takes away from the rest of the ingredients and uses the rice to fill the output. This explains why they have lower prices. Overall: if you're having a party and want well displayed sushi at a reasonable price this is the spot.

Wow. After only going to kinkaku, I finally tried sushi star for the first time yesterday, and I think that for lunch, sushi star is the better choice. They have a much greater selection and are just as fresh and delicious. Standouts include a super light rainbow roll, a sweet and creamy sayo soup, and perfect banana tempura. They also have some rarer treats such as tempura ice cream, black sesame ice cream, and fried rolls (not my favourite, but still fun to try). Hand rolls have a little too much rice in them but the sushi and rolls were well proportioned. Service was quick, and I'll definitely be back. In downtown kitchener, there are three sushi restaurants. Kinkaku is best for dinner, sushi star for lunch, and don't even bother with ye's sushi.

Be sure to reserve ahead of time if you are coming in a large group! We reserved prior, and the restaurant was packed, which makes me think it may be difficult to walk-in and get a table. The prices at here are pretty comparable to Kinkaku for lunch/dinner for AYCE. I think the biggest differentiating factor that this place has is their smoked salmon sushi. Yum! Their sashimi and rolls were pretty standard but good still. They also have a good variety of desserts: black sesame ice cream, cheesecakes, deep fried mars bars, etc. Service was quick and friendly. Would recommend!

I was looking forward to trying out but Sushi Star left me disappointed. I am a big fan of AYCE sushi restaurants and I plan on trying out all of them in the KW region before I graduate. I was expecting something on par with or better than Kinkaku given the high 4 star rating on Yelp, but after giving this place a try, Kinkaku is still the best in my opinion. Environment: So just location wise Sushi Star is inferior to Kinkaku. It is located near the King/Cameron bus stop, which means you'd need to take the 7 bus from Charles Terminal. This is an added hassle given that you can easily walk to Kinkaku or even Ye's Sushi from the Terminal. The restaurant itself is pretty big, it's nice and bright, and good for groups. Food: I do like the fact that you can write down what you'd like to order on a paper as opposed to ordering with a server. The menu for dinner is quite extensive so it is better if you go with a group so you can try out more dishes. I feel that the serving here is quite large, which isn't good for an AYCE place because you will be filled up very early on, which discourages you from trying out other things. My favorite from this restaurant is their Chinese style skewers, which is something that isn't available at any other AYCE restaurants. The lamb skewer is the best by far, it is soft and flavourful, hot from the bbq. Other than the skewers the other dishes are just very average, not worth the higher pricing. I really can't remember what else I tried that was spectacular. Service: Just your average Chinese restaurant service quality, nothing new here. Yes, you will face the occasional missing orders that is a symptom at all AYCE restaurants. I came on Monday because I heard there is a special dinning pricing of $17.99, but unfortunately it is no longer available. Dinner pricing ended up being $25.99. Now that even the price is on par with Kinkaku, I just can't justify revisiting this place again......

One of the best, if not the best, AYCE sushi I've ever been to.The service was fast, and the staff were friendly. The selection and quality of their food were top notch. Their beef teriyaki served on a sizzling plate was delicious as well as the bbq ribs which did not have much fat. The fish on the soup, rolls, sushi was generously portioned. My eyes and mouth were happy with every plate that came to the table. I'm so glad we picked this restaurant over 168 and Jinzakaya. Lunch AYCE was for $26.99, but it was worth it!!

By far the best sushi in KW region in my experience. The fish is so incredibly fresh, and the side dishes and desserts are also delicious. I would recommend the white tuna sashimi, and the fire salmon roll is so incredible as well. You will not be disappointed with any of the food you get here.

    Sashimi!!
    Christina L.

Food was delicious but service was awful! Sashimi was fresh but the rolls were a little underwhelming. Tempura had little breading which I always appreciate. Their ramen is really good for an AYCE sushi place. Never got to try the skewers because their stove was broken which was disappointing because this was one of the reasons we came! Service was bad as they kept trying to give us dishes we didn't order, then blamed it on us! They also did not try to compensate for their broken stove after we told them we were disappointed.

Time and time again I find myself in Waterloo for the weekend and looking forward to all-you-can-eat sushi from Sushi Star as one of my staple meals before I depart. AYCE sushi to me is a delicate balance between quality and quantity - it's not top notch, flown-in-from-Japan, best-ever sushi, but it needs to not be slimy, or frozen, or worse. I need to get as much as I ordered without arbitrary changes to the item/piece count. I need to be served in a reasonable time so my precious 1.5 hour seating duration isn't wasted (I eat slow!). I need the place to be comfortable and the staff to be smart and reasonable. So far - Sushi Star has met all of these requirements for me after multiple visits, and the usual crew still adores the place for their spicy skewers. The menu is quite diverse and there isn't anything they offer I would highlight that needs to be steered clear. There are definitely must-gets though - their skewers are great, not "Japanese-style" necessarily but still very satisfying. If you can handle your spice, go for the spicy ones! But be warned - they are actually spicy. The rolls and sashimi are great - and they do not skimp on portions when you order lots at once. The staff try their best to accommodate but they're not going to be very chatty or particularly accommodating - this is a no-frills, no-nonsense AYCE spot - if you have lots of dietary restrictions or other needs, unfortunately this place won't cut it for you. But let's be honest - if you can't enjoy most of the menu in large volumes, it's not worth your money anyways. Décor is simple and no-frills, reflective of the atmosphere. On weekends you'll see families and the large university student crowds that make the bus trek all the way to Kitchener for their sushi cravings satisfied. Prices have gone up a bit the last time I went, but for the occasions I am in KW area it's still worth the price. 10% off if paid in cash helps as well, so come prepared!

Spicy skewers! Definitely try it, and make sure you eat it while it's still hot!
    Eric F.

Now my favourite AYCE sushi in the KW area. (Edit: This was replaced by Kinkaku Izakaya, but it's a close 2nd and the best budget option!) Salmon sashimi is thickly cut and tasty. Cuttlefish sashimi came partially frozen. Spicy lamb skewer was absolutely delicious, grilled and seasoned with cumin. Any roll that says it has cheese will have lots more than most usual sushi places and I love it but it's not for everyone. I find the soya sauce is watery. Service is good, a pleasant departure from the AYCE sushi places that normally serve students closer to campus. The restaurant is smaller and I feel like that's also a big factor in getting better and more frequent service (the other being the apparent lack of students). Recommend trying the Sweet Sago Pudding (西米露) which is coconut flavoured. Definitely go for Monday $17.99 (cash-only) dinner special.

It's so amazing, I hardly ever found like this good restaurant for sushi, finally! All staff are very kind. You should come here and enjoy your meals

I used to go to sushi star when I was studying in UW , after graduated for 6 years I came back to the place. The taste has improved! They've got so many new products. Highly recommend the pink Angel Roll(looks good and tastes great), the sirloin beef is super tender. If you like sweet, you would love their stir fry noodle.

There are specials that change weekly. The interior is decorated with New Orleans memorabilia, medium lit, cozy (not large), with jazz music in the background. Service was attentive and friendly. They operated for 30 years at their old location. This location soft-opened on 2026-02-12. We came on 2026-02-25 for dinner. There were still some furnishings to complete (there were unforeseen delays). They kept the same menu offerings but it will be expanded within a month. We ordered the following: 1. Citra Terre D'Abruzzo Pinot Grigio - Italy (glass $14.95). 2. Coke. 3. Crab Cakes ($19.95). 4. New Orleans Shrimp Cocktail ($19.95). 5. Jambalaya Aranchini (weekly special). 6. Blackened Lamb Chops (weekly special). 7. New Orleans Fisherman's Plate ($39.95). 8. Pecan Pie warmed with Ice Cream ($14.95). 9. Bananas Foster ($14.95). 10. Beignet ($14.95). Every dish had an excellent presentation. We spent a lot of time taking photos and videos. What did you expect from me?! We loved all the dishes! The portions were large! There are more staff than in the previous location, allowing the service to be excellent. They tend to have many loyal and returning customers. Every table starts with freshly baked bread and butter. The bread was so fresh! The three appetizers tasted good. They each had a little kick due to creole cuisine. I loved the shrimp the most. The Blackened Lamb Chops was perfectly cooked. Each of the four pieces were very tender, accompanied by a delicious sauce. The dish had some very nicely cooked seasonal vegetables: roasted potatoes, a red pepper, string beans, a broccoli, and a carrot. This dish will be put into their regular menu in the near future. The New Orleans Fisherman's Plate is great if you want a little sampling of their seafood: Blackened Fish, Cajun Calamari, and Coconut Beer Shrimp. It also comes with rice and seasonal vegetables. The fish was so good! We brought some home for my mom and she really loved it. The Coconut Beer Shrimp was on top of a Orange Marmalade Sauce, which is really liked. The three desserts looked really good and tasted good. I loved the pecan pie the most. They can split dishes in half in the kitchen and serve them on two dishes for two people to share. The restaurant uses fresh seasonal ingredients and spices to create authentic Creole and Cajun tastes. Everything is made in-house except for bread and butter. In the near future, their bread will be made in-house too. Currently, there is only indoor dining but they are looking into the possibility of sidewalk outdoor dining. Mike Djurdjevic runs the front of the house while his wife, Mira Djurdjevic, operates the kitchen. Their son, Marko, also helps in the front of the house. There is a large pizza oven at the back of the restaurant. They will be introducing creole pizza in the near future. There is a separate large room for events, parties, etc. This room will be ready in the near future. They also do catering. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, but there is no door-open button. There is one gender-neutral washroom, which is also wheelchair accessible, and one female washroom. Thrre is paid neighbourhood street parking. Review 2026-037

With a better location and more space, the atmosphere should be even better, and I think the restaurant will do really well. Definitely a place I'd recommend, and I'm looking forward to visiting again after they move.
