This Mandrin location is probably the worst I have ever been to! Was going to have some roast beef and a few seafood dishes for a treat for myself while in the area. The roast looked quite dried out on the end so asked for a rare slice thinking it would be better. Turns out it was stone cold inside and so yea was no doubt pre cooked. The mashed potatoes were like soup and the gravy was like water. Most all the dishes I tried were cold and so it wasn't a very pleasant meal. The wait staff were quite nice though and came by to top up my water and and remove plates. I would like to mention the robot seating deal is just plain ridiculous. I arrived when the restaurant was sparsely seated and the hostess has me sit to the side while he programs the robot (he could have had a hostess take me directly to my table). Then I'm instructed to follow the robot, quite de-humanizing. The robot doesn't even take you to your table, just to your dining lounge and then a hostess has to grab a paper on the side of the robot and then seat you. Absolutely ridiculous! Anyway at over $50.00 for a cold meal, I'll look elsewhere next time I'm in Guelph. I think Mandrin is off my list. read more

Picked up lunch yesterday. Drove an Hour home to enjoy the food. That didn't happen. The food was not fresh. Looked like reheated leftovers. The breaded lemon chicken was small pieces with black spots of fat. The chicken fries rice was dark similar to beef but tastes terrible. The egg rolls tastes bad. Overall terrible food. I haven't been to Mandarin in about 15 years but from what I remember, they used to have lobster, mussels, and crab legs. This location did not have crab legs or lobster. They did have shrimp, salmon, mussels, fish, and sushi (which I love). The cost is $36 per person for the all-you-can-eat buffet. All of the staff were professional, efficient and courteous. The presentation of the food at the buffets were nice and organized. Lots of parking and a nice date night spot since the Galaxy Cinema is right next door. read more

Food and service were good. But the management has gone down hill. While there our waitress made a mistake with splitting our bills. She calmly corrected her mistake, and we were ready to leave. But then we heard the manager speak to, I mean YELL AT her, left the poor girl in tears. Mistakes happen, but seeing how this manager dealt with it was very disheartening, and honeslty enraging, no one should be treated like thay at work. We dined with them on Saturday night and we're excited to have Pauly as our server again. They always make our experience a five star affair. Obviously this place is for people like myself, who have a hard time choosing just one thing to order. The buffet on normal days is pretty good, with a wide selection. I also went on the Chinese New year, and they had a bunch of really cool dumplings and buns!! The price if I remember correctly is about 32 for dinner. Quite expensive. Don't order any drinks. They're watered down, and don't taste good. Otherwise, the staff needs to wait till we leave the table before grabbing plates. I was in the middle of finishing the last few bites, and made the mistake of turning away to eat something else. They took the plate from me, without letting me finish. Calm down guys. Surprise, surprise this Mandarin is the very same as every other Mandarin you have ever been to. The employees are excellently trained to do their jobs and are dutifully attentive to your needs. But the food is so mediocre. It was a 7:30 on a Saturday night and the staff had obviously tried to stop refreshing the dishes on the hot table to wrap up the evening. But as we were about to leave at 9, they were still seating new diners. You will get far better food at any Chinese restaurant. You are paying a big premium only for selection. But I am finding the selection of actual Chinese type dishes seems to be dwindling and the number of low-quality filler dishes is increasing. If you are worried about the amount you can eat at this buffet, spend the same amount at any Chinese restaurant and you will end up with a large quantity of food that you can also take home. I am sorry but the allure of Mandarin has really worn off for me. And after every visit I say, "never again", but after some time passes someone always talks me back into going again. read more

The only thing that I usually enjoy about going to ANY Mandarin restaurant is their roast beef. This restaurant couldn't even perfect that. The roast beef had little to no flavor and was very dry. The whole experience was a huge disappointment! If anybody cares to know my opinion on the other food or the available selection, then I'll tell you. There is none! Two other food items really stuck out for me. It was the "spicy chicken" and "Peking style pork". These 2 dishes were particularly poor dishes. We celebrated my husband's birthday here with a group of 20. I paid the entire bill except I had registered my husband's birthday online so his was to be free. I did not receive a confirmation certificate so I called Mandarin and was assured that if he had ID showing his birthdate then it would be fine. When the bill arrived I explained to the wait staff that his meal should be free. The waiter called over the assistant manager to adjust the bill. In front of all or guests she yelled that it was not to be removed from the bill and that we did not have a certificate etc. In front of the whole dining room her voice was loud and embarrassing. She ruined the experience and put a complete damper on the birthday. I actually had to tell her to be quiet and I asked that we discuss the matter in private away from our guests. Remember he had his ID and I had a bill for over 300 dollars in my hand. Really 23 dollars for his meal was just a drop in the bucket.... Anyway, she was even ruder and louder. So I asked to see the head manager who right away told her to fix the bill. I will not go to this location again based on this experience and quite frankly the food is mediocre. read more

So I was surprised how low the rating was for this restaurant given my experience. First, I would like to commend our waiter Seng for amazing service. He was so attentive and friendly. He told us many times that if any of the food he has wasn't up to our standards he would ask the staff to remake the dish. He also was always on top of keeping our water and coffee cups filled and made good conversation with every interaction. He was one of the main reasons for the great experience. I will say the food was good, probably around 3 stars. As at every buffet you can't expect every dish to be amazing but they definitely had good food. Great tornado shrimp, broccoli, mushrooms, sautéed spinach, and lemon chicken. They also have a large selection of desserts, it was hard to choose just a couple. Of the things I didn't like so much were the thick noodles (as they were kind of hard) and the egg rolls. However, I would like to commend their decor, as the place looks beautiful on the inside. Very busy restaurant these days. I would suggest calling in for a reservation if you are going in with a party bigger than 8. I'm a big fan of buffets and this Mandarin location is pretty similar to all other buffets. The choice in foods are really diverse and are restocked very quickly. I went during the lunar festival and they offered moon cake which is very nice. As for price, make sure you eat at least 4 full plates to get your moneys worth. It's about $40 per person on busy weekends, but worth it if you're hungry. read more

Very good buffet. My brother and I went to the Mandarin on a Saturday around 5pm. We did not have to wait long to be seated and received excellent service. Waiters, waitresses', and the hostess were all extremely friendly. Rex was our main man for the evening and be provided above excellent service. My brother and I are two large bodybuilders who love to eat. We came here for or cheat meal and we were not disappointed. A very large variety of proteins including sushi, sashimi, pizza, ribs, chicken wings, pork loin, meatballs, various beef and chicken dishes, shrimp, salmon, crab and many many more. Vegetables were also abundant and in a wide variety of dishes. A lot of people complain about the salt content in the foods but we really Only noticed it in the meatballs. The dessert table was on par with the rest of the dinner; good quality and a huge variety. Included cake, pie, cookies, pastries, ice cream, frozen yogurt, jello, and more. Overall we had a fantastic time at the Mandarin at the Guelph location and will definitely be returning. As a side note, we were never once given a hard time from anyone about the 5 heaping plates of food we each ate, so bring your appetite and don't be shy. read more

The Mandarin is a nice looking place. I arrive with a group of people who were all impressed with the decoration on the inside. Don't let the lack of decoration on the outside for you. Service was excellent the server staff did a great job of clearing away the dishes as soon as they were done. The cooking was good especially the sauces. I can recommend this restaurant to anybody. In general when going to any franchise restaurant you would expect some consistency in terms of food selection. One of my favorites is mussels cooked in black bean & garlic sauce. In two visits it was never available. My family member said the first time was perhaps because it's only served during dinner. Now after paying a premium during mother's day dinner...again still not available though mussels were available in the cold salad area. Perhaps the owners believe in that vicinity that my favorite doesn't cater to the majority of its customers which is fine. That does mean I will travel with my family to another location in the future. I was happy Mandarin was opening in Guelph but now have no problem driving a bit further to get what I want. read more

Then after I paid and put the debit machine near the centre edge of the table, the second server came to retrieve it. There are not enough good things I can say about this location! I'm a big fan of the Mandarin chain of restaurants, and this one is my go-to! I believe it's the newest, maybe even the smallest, but I feel it's the best. First off, service is top notch! So polite and friendly. The wait staff are at the top of their game. As soon as my plate is empty, it's picked up. When my water glass is at 1/4 empty, it's topped up! Everytime I go one of the operating managers comes to my table to ask how things are going. The food is awesome. It has a smaller selection, but I feel it has all the good stuff, the things you go to a buffet to eat! My favorites are the wings, noodles, prime rib, and sushi. I can never get enough of their creme brule for dessert, I seriously eat 6 or more. The Mandarin can be a little pricy though, last Friday evening it cost us a little over $30 each. It's a great spot for a treat or a celebration . It's the best buffet around! read more

I think we all have had our share of bad experiences, but this one had my boyfriend and I laughing in disbelief. I convinced him to try Mandarin after my fantastic experiences at home (Ottawa). The evening started off fantastically, and we both gathered our plates and tucked in. On round 2, the manager Lisa came and introduced herself. Shortly after, my boyfriend found a bee (yes, a BEE) in his Shanghai noodles. I picked up his plate and handed it to Lisa, trying to be discreet, but still letting her know of my displeasure. Her compensation was to offer us free drinks. Neither of us were drinking that night, so this was useless to us. We politely declined, and continued on. The waitress also offered us free drinks, which we again declined. When the bill came, they were still wanted us to pay full price. When I asked about at least a reduction, the waitress went and got the manager, who handed us a $2 stuffed panda. ... A stuffed Panda, and no indication that the food had been disposed of, only that the had "closed the kitchen door". We paid, full price (with a tip for the poor waitress because none of this was her fault), and as my boyfriend was taking his card back, another waitress spilled his full glass of water on him. We got up and left, laughing, because there's something so absurd about being given a stuffed Panda as compensation for finding an INSECT IN YOUR FOOD, and having someone dump water on you as a goodbye. Moral of the story: Mandarin Guelph serves Shanghai fried bees, and will make you wet your pants. And that will be the most sanitary part of your meal. read more

We used to enjoy a trip to the Mandarin, whether at this location or the one in Kitchener near Costco. It was a nice excuse for an evening of gourmet gluttony every couple of months. Overnight this place has gone to hell and we won't be coming back any time soon. First, and most importantly, the steamed crab is gone. Believe me, that's a big loss. It might be tolerated a lot better if the prime rib (our second favorite entree) had held its own. But on the evening of Feb 18th, this "prime rib" was just horrible.Well-done pot roast was closer to what they served. Nothing came close to "medium rare." Twenty mins later a new piece of meat arrived and the chef cut me a slice that was nothing but fat and grizzle. Mandarin is not going to keep its clientele very long with food like this. Other low-lights of the evening included empty trays where fresh plates should have been and some not-so-clean plates among the new arrivals. Other complaints include incorrect labels on the desert and meat buffets (the "flank steak" sign made me wish I had come during lunchtime. Anything would have been better than that low-grade hunk of beef they were serving for dinner). There were noticeable empty spaces along the buffets making us wonder what else had been phased out during the franchise's economy move. Finally, some people (including us) come to the Mandarin on date nights. Why does the restaurant resist the idea of an adult room? Seating couples who might like to engage with each other over dinner right next to a family of eight with screaming, food-throwing toddlers seems unreasonable and easily remediable. We can understand trying to stay profitable. But doing so by reducing food quality and phasing out popular choices won't work for long. I'd rather see them go out of business that repeat last night's experience. read more
