I went to this particular Yehia and had Brad do my hair. He was really nice, and good. When I left, I had nice flowing tresses. However, after a few days, my hair started SHEDDING like crazy. So, I imagine it was the extreme heat put on it. Furthermore, after I washed it, I had stray straight strands all over the place. (mind you, I have natural hair with an extremely TIGHT curl) So, for straight strands to standing out, not cool. So, clearly, I went here, a while ago, like last winter, and I won't be back EVER AGAIN. That whole "I think I might want to go back to a relaxer" is out of my system! I visited the salon in Fall 2012 and this was my last visit. They use way too much heat and parts of my hair are permanently straight. The worst part was the crappy service. The stylist was very disrespectful while styling my hair and he also burned my neck! The young man at the front desk and the other stylist tried to offer to do my hair again or a free hairstyle. I've been a client of Yehia's for almost 20 years and yes I agree they use a LOT of heat but the stylists there are the only ones who can straighten my hair without me having to get a relaxer. I have naturally curly hair but no one would know that because of what Yehia has done to my hair throughout the years. My hair is very healthy and I have had no problems. I have been here three times. Here's my review with disclaimers at the top: Disclaimer: I am a white male with easy-to-cut hair that has good texture, etc. I went to Yehia each time for walk-in and was (somewhat) quickly worked in each time with one of the older gentleman at the front. My hair always looks great, but I don't get a color or anything. I will say that the last time I got my hair cut they seated me, when numerous chairs were open at other stations, right next to a young lady getting her natural hair blown out. Holy @&iT there was a lot of smoke in the room, blowing right into my face, and it was about 89 degrees in there late June. Ventilate and air condition, guys! They seem really talented with the hot irons and blow dryers, but it seems to me that the natural hair would be really prone to damage after the amount of high heat they subject it to. The ladies' hair looks really great when they're done with it, I'll attest, from a man's point of view. The female receptionist offered me water or coffee last time, a new addition. That was nice, though I declined. She's also really friendly, polite, and I noticed that she makes it her priority to give customers good information. She researches things online about things like how Keratin treatments actually work on the hair and if the Keratin washes out, what the hair will look and feel like after the treatment, etc.... This is really nice and thoughtful of her, I think, and shows her commitment to customer knowledge. The guy cutting my hair used the buzz clippers at the very end to trim my hairlines up and the clippers really hurt. I jerked several time but he kept using them roughly. I don't know about ladies' hair or natural hair, but I'd definitely say 4 or more stars for a quick men's cut in Hyde Park, cheaper than other salons in the area. I had an early morning appointment and was met with not only my stylist not being there but being turned away because the stylist that was there didn't want to deal with my natural hair. Mind you, I've been coming to this shop for years and have never had this happen before but today I experienced such disrespect that I will not be returning in the future. I went here last week and I feel I should post something because, hey! It's so hard sometimes to be a girl in Hyde Park. Most reviews are old and just tell you how much better off you'd be downtown. First of all, I was a walk-in on Friday morning and they still were able to get me in with a smile. That was nice. I went to Yehia earlier this week. I tried dying my hair at home, and ended up with blonde roots and black hair. I went into the salon and explained to Sam, that I wanted a blonde color. He told me he wouldn't be able to do blonde on the first visit but he could achieve a light brown color. I was in the salon for about 4 hours, it was a long process but the results were great. I've been recieveing so many compliments on my hair since then, I highly recommend Yehia and Sam for color. For women who are particular with how their hair is treated and want to know what products are being used, DONT GO HERE! I asked Mohammed aka Hani to use a product for damage control to protect my hair from the heat and he was offended and rudely shooed me over to another stylist who happily used the product that he said was not available anywhere in the shop, but they actually sell the product. I wasn't trying to cause trouble but its MY hair! If I want to touch my hair or know what's being put on it, I should not get a hand smack (so to speak). I really don't know why there are so many negative reviews. I have been going to Yehia, for over 10 years. I go to this location more than the downtown one because the parking is easier, I know its hyde park, but drive around once or twice and you will find a good spot. Yehia and all of the stylist are great, they take their time and make you very comfortable. They always offer me water, juice, or coffee. If I come in on a Saturday morning early I can get in and out in about an hour. My hair is always beautiful when I leave and last about two weeks if I am not working out. I constantly get compliments on my hair and everyone I have referred to them has become a regular. Just go check them out they are a great group of stylist. read more

Everyone in the shop is lovely and I consider the salon a hidden treasure in Hyde Park. I moved to Chicago from downtown DC and in all my years (wavy hair, lots of body that too many stylists have found troubling) I've never had a better haircut, better blowout or more care or attention. I went to this Yehia to see Makeup Mike for an eyebrow/upper lip/chin wax. He had been recommended to me by a coworker. I walked in with no appointment, and he was extremely friendly and accommodating. He was busy when I came in, but he set up a time for me to come back. When I returned he was just as friendly. He led me to the closet where I was able to hang up my coat and scarf and then led me to his chair. He took his time waxing me, and he made sure not to leave any stray hairs. He noted that the last person who had waxed my eyebrows had made one a bit thinner than the other so he was careful not to do this. I also noted that the wax job he did on me was nearly painless. I am used to the pain of waxing and I just think of it as a sacrifice for beauty, so I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of pain compared to previous waxings I've had. I went in for a simple trim, because my mother recommended her stylist to me. This was a huge mistake. The woman was friendly, but I care how my hair looks and she ended up cutting probably 4 inches off areas and rounded my hair into an afro style cut. I am extremely livid, I personally think I look like an idiot and am considering simply shaving my hair off. I would not suggest this place or believe any stylist when they say they will give a "trim" because its really a cut and shape, how they would like it. Although I've been a Hyde Park resident for years, I never visited Yehia until yesterday. Prior to that, I'd just do highly coarse, easily tangled my hair at home. My home styling would take 2 to 4 hours depending on the look I wanted to achieve. If I visited a salon, I'd have to suffer through long waits before my scheduled appointment could start. My entire perspective on styling and service changed in one impromptu visit to Yehia! I walked in to - sans appointment - to have my hair washed, blown out, and trimmed. I was warmly greeted by the receptionist who ushered me to the shampoo area. Within 15 minutes, I was in Mohammad's chair. FIFTEEN MINUTES! That's almost unheard of for me! I expected a lot of tension to be used to blow out my hair. It was the exact opposite. Within 40 minutes, I had a voluminous, bouncy, shiny hairdo that seemed worlds away from the tightly coiled coif I sported just an hour earlier. I gladly paid the very reasonable rate for his service and handed him a tip because I couldn't get over the difference and feel. I'll definitely be back! read more

I have been going to the salon weekly for the past 6 months. R. decided to dye my hair a darker shade of red ' since it's winter time' She dyed it too dark then said she would 'fix' it on my next visit. On the next visit she corrected the color but my hair could not take the process! When i washed my hair at home it simply matted together. There are better places and prices for the service they render... I decided to go here after my stylist was no longer available, I am very picker and usually keep a stylist I like for years on. So I drove by in need of service closer to home...worst decision I could have ever made. You may come out straight & bouncy, but your hair will be damaged. A black stylist did my hair the first time, she was ok and treated me well as a 1st time client. When I made the 2nd appt with her, she totally ignored me! I called for an appt, when I showed up she never acknowledged me. I had to wait, was watered down like a bad drink by the shampoo girl, then wait again because the stylist had an attitude when I approached her & said she didn't know I had an appt (all the while taking other clients). She asked another guy to blow dry me, he talked to other people, went out for a few smokes and never said anything to me. Finally fed up with the worst service since customer service was invented...I approached the receptionist/shampoo girl & told her I was leaving! Thats when I was approached by a younger guy who siad he was the manager and would take care of me. Although he had other clients as well, he did fit me into his schedule & took very good care of me. He even talked about the stylist I had an appt with & was disgusted with her lack of professionalism. Before leaving the receptionist apologized for what I had gone thru. She went on to explain that the stylist had person problems at home & this is why she was acting that way... WTH...this is suppose to be a place of business - not Social Service! To top if off, after all the apologizes received the stylist never looked my way or apologized, but that's what you get from a poorly run establishment. I have been a client at Yehia for about 3 years and I am absolutely in love. I only allow Roxanne to touch and do my hair and I couldn't be happier. I have been natural since my junior year and college (although I do have Roxanne flat iron my hair) and she is one of the best. I have never had a complaint besides little things. I am always happy with my hair when I leave. She has cut, colored, styled, conditioned and everything under the sun for my hair. She is all about HEALTHY hair and she is always sharing tips and knowledge with me for things to do at home to maintain my hair. She is always so friendly and funny! the blow dryed the shit outta my natural hair leaving it flowing and bouncy it stayed straight for two days

I have natural wavy hair and they used way too much heat. After I repeatedly told the stylist to use minimal heat because my fine hair burns easy he proceeded to fry my hair. Blow dry bone straight, flat iron on high heat, go through my hair again with flat Iron on high heat, then attempt to use hot curling tool to curl my hair. I had to literally move my head to get him to stop. Then, I needed a trim so I told him .25 inch only. He said ok. He took off 1.5 inches! After I left the salon over the next few weeks I've had hair shedding, extreme breakage, short patch in the middle of my head and my ends are fried!! Not only is my hair heat damaged but I need to cut more off frm the awful ends. So, essentially this one visit at Yehia has set my hair growth back at least 6 months! I believe Yehia has a complete disregard for the population that they serve. My dog gets better service when he goes to get groomed. I will never be back, not even on my worst hair day. read more

Do not go to Yehias folks!!! I started going to the downtown location last year. I didn't love it but it I didn't exactly think it was horrible. When I first started going I had my hair done by a heavy set man named Mohamed. He cut my hair into a strange outdated mullet that made me look 40. I didn't realize that I didn't like the cut until I got home but I felt like I could deal with it. I figured I could just wear it in a ponytail which is how I usually wear my hair. I kept going because I figured maybe it was somehow my fault because I didn't exactly communicate to him what kind of haircut I was expecting. I was upset that I had to cut my hair because I was trying to grow it out, but they said my ends were damaged so I felt like I had to. I kept going to him until he colored my hair. When he colored my hair I was excited because the color was fantastic and he gave me a deal as well. I loved the color so much I wanted to hug him until my hair started to break at the sides. I have such little hair on my sides that it looks like a Mohawk. I cant afford to have more breakage there. Any stylist should know that bleach and African American hair don't go together. I had to change my stylist after the breakage I should have changed salons but I decided to stay because my sister is a customer here and she swears by a stylist named Mish mish. Mish mish is pretty good and I've never had a problem with him. I find the people here to be pretty unfriendly for the most part. I recently moved to Elmwood Park and started going to the Oakpark location. At first it was fine. An old man did my hair and he did a pretty descent job. He doesn't speak that much English so communication is difficult The next time I went back a guy named Omar did my hair. He did a descent job on my hair but for some reason I get the feeling he is amateur. As he was doing my hair he sparked a conversation with me. I told him I was looking for work so he hired me knowing I knew nothing about hair. That made me feel weary about whether or not the other people working there were credible. I worked there for two days. The days that I worked were slow so I didn't do much work. He promised to pay me $50 dollars a day but decided he didn't want to pay me because it was so slow. I decided not to make a fuss about it because I noticed that they were really slow and figured maybe they were hitting hard times. The next time I went back I saw the old man again. He did a descent job but it kinda bothered me that he didn't speak English. I would only want to go to him to have him do basic things such as a wash and blow. I would only recommend going to him if no one else is available and you dint mind the language barrier. I came back the following week to have my hair colored with Omar. My hair after consistently going to Yehias for more that six months was really over processed due to relaxing coloring and heat. They kept having to cut it, which pissed me off since I was trying to grow it out. I decided to color my hair because my roots were growing out and I didn't like it. Omar advised me not to because it would continue to damage my already damaged hair. I decided not to listen to him because the old man said that is was fine and I really wanted to color my hair. They decided to go ahead with it anyway. I was really upset as I sat in the salon because I requested to have Omar do my hair but he wanted to pass me off to the old man. Omar often passes his clients off when he doesn't want to do your hair. I was pissed about it and when I told him that I preferred for him to do it he seemed irritated with me. I left the shop with wet hair that looked like a mess. The color was too light and didn't match my skin tone at all and it didn't look anything like the color I requested. I was visibly upset and they didn't even seem to care. they were mad because I was mad. I went to the bathroom to look at it and I wanted to cry. When I went to go pay I looked visibly unsatisfied. I wanted to sneak out the back door without paying but I decided to pay anyway and leave a tip for god knows what reason. The old man looked as if he was gonna bite me if i even thought about complaining or possibly not paying. They all seemed to be looking at me when I walked out and somewhat laughing at me. I glanced over at Omar and he had a really irritated look on his face as if he didn't want to deal with me for what ever reason. I left the salon feeling humiliated. People stared at me as I walked down the street and not in a good way. I ended up going to Vidal Sassoon the next day to fix what Yehia's had done. Omar runs the shop and in my opinion he is VERY VERY unprofessional. I left this salon feeling humiliated and I will never get my hair done here again. The only reason I would ever go back is to get my brows done by a woman named Valerie. I will never give them business again. This salon sucks and they can go to straight hell for all I care!!!! read more

I went to Yehia's last Saturday for a wash and blow and a trim. This was my first time going and was recommended by a coworker. My stylist, Rosemary, was excellent. It took so long finding a stylist who is patient with my hair and took the time to bring it back to a healthy state. I was so so pleased with the finished product. I don't know what people are complaining about. My family and I had a totally positive experience today at the salon. My son had an appointment at noon and he was taken immediately. We did not even have a chance to sit down. We scheduled the appointment with Yehia, and he deferred to one of his colleagues who he said was better suited to cut men's hair, but he consulted with us, supervised the cut, and put his own finishing touches on the style at the end. Brad, the primary stylist, was careful and spent plenty of time to make sure that the cut was just what we asked for. Everyone in the shop was friendly and gracious, offering drinks, making sure we were comfortable. On our way out, Yehia noticed that my daughter's hair was split on the ends, and insisted on giving her a trim, plus ironed her hair straight - and he did not charge us! There are negative reviews on here because they are rude and don't know what the heck is going on and evidently need some customer service training!!! Sooooo unprofessional. I was really shocked. I made my appointment 1 week in advance. I was really happy once arrived because I LOVE getting my hair done and am new to the area. I left the salon infuriated!! They definitely lack any sort of professionalism. I sat for 80 minutes (of course after my hair had been washed) waiting for someone to actually acknowledge that I was their to get my hair done and not just chill. The shampoo kid was AWESOME! He really worked my hair out. But, sitting at the salon with no acknowledgement nor estimated time of wait was just so ridiculous. Finally after 45 min someone offered me water. There was TONS of staff that walked by me a number of times, it wasn't until the shop was starting to clear out that a nice lady named June asked who I was there to see. She blew out my already air-dried hair. Yehia came over and offered a free trim...something I would have been interested in 60 minutes prior! I had somewhere to be. He worked quickly to get me outta there and tried to engage in conversation with me but I wasn't for it. I made known my disappointment and I was dumbfounded that this incident occured with THE OWNER OF THE SALON!!!! AND, the really sad thing about it was that I never got so much as an apology. It's amazing how far an "I'm sorry" will get you. I must say, however, i did get a lot of compliments on my hair, but I trust that Yehia ain't the only game in town. I'm willing to try others solely based on the embarrasingly poor customer service. To boot, I was walking past the other day and wanted to purchase some AVEDA products but I can't bring myself to set foot in that place at this time.
