this was my first real experience at a salon, and it was incredible! I went in for a walk in to get an ombre pink hair, and they had 10min waiting time tops. My hair has been treated before and I was scared it would become brittle/difficult to work with or break off, or that the stylists there would not be experienced with treating hair that is difficult to bleach (in my exlerience, my hair has been notoriously stubborn in hanging onto pigments). This was not the case at all- Bianca (my stylist) was really friendly and patient with me through the whole process. It turned out really pretty! My boyfriend wanted white hair, and I would've had him do it here had he not been in town for only a few days. my only complaint was that I showed a reference photo that was a pastel ombre, but the pink turned out really vibrant. However, I don't think this is their fault, as pastel colors probably take a lot more bleaching (maybe even multiple sessions) and was probably really damaging. For what they had to work with, they did an amazing job! They also have really good social distancing there, customers are always seated quite a distance away from each other. Scheduling is interesting to get himself, Yehia. Either you call the day before and they give you a time, without taking your name, or you just walk in when you know from experience that he is there (which I saw a lot of while I was in the chair). I had unfortunately missed an appointment with my 20+year operator on Hubbard St. the day before due to ride-share and construction on LSD issues (I started looking for a ride share 45 minutes before my appt. and none of the apps could get to me in a timely manner to get downtown from Hyde Park). Then, I couldn't get an appt. with my usual operator for another month. So, I called a friend of mine who is a veteran Hyde Parker to see if they knew of anyone locally that was familiar with cutting white hair because all of the salons in my area have pictures of black people's haircuts. She said Yehia - he cut white women's hair exclusively back in the day. I walked in at my appt. time and Yeshia was waiting there for me. He asked what I wanted. I said, "I want this haircut, but shorter." I have an asymmetrical bob. He said I had a very beautiful haircut. But, evidently, not beautiful enough for him! He started me with my undercut at the neck, and I should have run when he pulled out the razor. I said, "Take it easy with the razor, I have very fine hair." I have the most seriously fine hair! He said, "You need lots and lots of layers." A BOB DOES NOT HAVE LAYERS! I am going to take a certain amount of responsibility for this because I should have just stopped him and walked away, but how do you walk out in the middle of a haircut? He razored and razored and razored, and even suggested I cut the right side like the left side so I could pull it back and I said, "I don't have enough hair for that!" Thank God I stopped that suggestion! It looked okay when I left basically because he blow dried it and fluffed it up a bit. But after sleeping on it and looking in the mirror this morning I am AGHAST! It looks like someone went after my hair with a chain saw. It cost $50. $50 for a $10 hack job. To start I have natural, colored hair and I'm growing out shaved sides and back. Yet, I wanted to get my hair straightened to check my length and stretch a little bit so I made an appointment with Yehia in Hyde Park. I'd been to them before but a while ago and to their location Downtown. The owner did my hair and it turned out beautifully. Because my growing out hair was still a bit short, the heat from the hand dryer was a bit much in certain parts but the outcome was beautiful. I go to college in Rock Island and make a trip back home whenever I need my hair done solely for Sam and Yehia to do their magic. First of all, I wouldn't even give them 1 star if I didn't have to. I called on the phone and asked if they could do a razor cut. They said yes. I asked how much. They said $35. I asked if I could walk in and they said yes. I got there and I said I wanted a haircut. I had already washed my hair. Mohammed started on my hair. He proceeded to wash my hair. I assumed that the wash came with it since I specifically only wanted a haircut. He then put me under the steamer. I was thinking wow this is nice that a haircut comes with all of this. After the steam, he rinsed out the conditioner and sat me in his chair. FYI, while I was under the steamer, he cut a guy's hair. The hair was still all over the floor. He didn't even have enough decency, sense, or cleanliness, to sweep the hair up before starting on me. Nasty af! He then started cutting my hair. That was the first cut. He then started blow drying my hair. At that point I was wondering what he was doing because I didn't ask for my hair to be blow dried. I wanted a haircut! So I just thought maybe he was bored. You know how stylists do sometime. But it's been a long time since I've been to a salon. After the blow dry, which was torture btw, he started to curl my hair with a marcel iron. I didn't want my hair curled. I say there like a dummy . Yes I did. I allowed him to curl my hair although once again , all I wanted was a haircut! A haircut! I'm normally not docile. But I just sat there like a fool and let him give me services I didn't want , didn't ask for , and never agreed to. The marcel iron was so hot I felt like my hair was on fire. So first the hot blow dryer to my scalp and then the hot Marcel iron to my scalp. Mind you, my hair is super short at this point. I had already had a bad experience of my hair falling out due to being over processed. My hair was shoulder length last week and it's now maybe an inch long. I was already traumatized before I came there. When I get to the register to pay, the guy tells me $90!!!!!! Wtf? How in the world did a $35 haircut turn into a $90 haircut??? Because he added shyt on I didn't ask for. I went ahead and paid and in my mind, I said I would never go there again. A short while after leaving, my head still felt sore. Upon examining my hair, I discovered I have burns all over my head!! First off, as a stylist, wtf would he put heat to my hair after him and myself both agreed that my hair was damaged . That's why I was there for the haircut. Now I am walking around with burns to my scalp that have to heal. And now I have to go back to wearing wigs because you can see the burns through my hair. I called them amd he answered the phone "Yehia and company hair salon, how can I help you"? I said is this Mohammed? He repeated with an attitude" YEHIA AND COMPANY HAIR SALON HOW CAN I HELP YOU"? This fool never acknowledged of he was Mohammed. I told him I was there a few days ago and I have burns all over my head and Mohamed did my hair. He said and I quote" ok, what do you want me to do about it"? I was like excuse me what do you mean what I want you to do about it ? I want my money back !!!! He said oh you have to call downtown. I called downtown and asked for the manager and they said call back in an hour. The brush off. I called my bank and told them this story and filed a claim. I can't believe it has taken me this long to write a review about Yehia & Co. I've only been a customer at this salon since 1994. lol I'm typically serviced by the owner, Yehia, at the Hyde Park/Chicago location, but I often went to their sister salon on Dearborn Street/Chicago and was serviced by Mohammad (RIP). You can't go wrong at either location, but the Hyde Park location is their flagship store and since the owner works out of this location, you feel you receiving the best service under his watchful eye. I most recently received a double-process color service, chestnut brown base with golden highlights and I could not have been happier. They typically use Aveda products, as they were once an Aveda concept salon, but I can't say for sure now. I will say they are due for some renovations and upgrades, as they've been in the Hyde Park location for over 30 years and you can imagine the wear and tear of furnishings and equipment. The travel is not as convenient as it once was, as I live in the far west suburbs, so I may go to Serene Hair Salon (Bolingbrook) as a great alternative. Overall, I am just as pleased with Yehia's services, as I was when I first walked through their doors over 20 years ago. read more

Yehia and his salon are both lovely. I first went to him for a blowout. Yehia did a fantastic job and put a lot of attention into styling my hair to my liking. I was very happy after. The next week I returned to Yehia for a trim. He did a fantastic job and took the perfect amount of hair off. Yehia clearly has a lot of experience with hair!! I asked for a fade but instead received a flat zero all around my head. Then, the barber shaved my widows peak which is a huge no-no for me. Finally, when I arrived home, it seemed like there was something wrong with the back of my head. I looked in the mirror and found a hair triangle as if the barber thought it would be a nice idea to give me a proper mohawk but only for the back of my head. I ended up going back so they could round it off, which they did. Either way, they took way too many artistic liberties. I guess I could have asked to see the back of my head before I left but when show them a picture of a haircut, my hair should look like that haircut. I called and asked how much a hair cut would be and they said $35. I was not looking to spend more than $40 so I said ok and I told them I just wanted a regular hair cut. They cut it and charged me $80! I've never paid that much for a haircut in my life and they said it was because they blow dryed and styled it (the styling was just a straightener through the ends) and it was literally frizzy by the time I left. I wish I had read these reviews. I was wooed by Yehia's staff's ability to blow dry my hair straight without a chemical, but curls only lasted until the wind blew - that's just my hair. So I decided, after much soul-searching, to get a texturizer. I went to Yehia, who had sweet talked me prior, and he slapped some relaxer in. When it was rinsed out and blown dry, it was straight, but by the next day, no curls and I realized I had so many different textures in my hair that there was no hope. I went back, he tried curling it tighter, to no avail. I went back again, for the "curly look." It looked like cats had been licking my hair. I give Yehia points for trying to cover up the mess, but I ended up at another salon getting all the process cut out - 10 months of growth gone. Now I'm much happier and feel free. It's not his fault that my hair won't hold a curl, but I do blame him for not taking the time to feel my hair, ask questions and do an actual texturizer, not a quickie perm. read more

Mixed emotions but ultimately no. I have gone here only a few times and seen my regular hair stylist Floyd. I was lied to and told that he was on vacation when actually he left for another shop. I sat in horror while my hair was getting cut and styled knowing that people have the audacity to lie to gain business. 2 stars because the cut and tone was a job well done and I did get a discount for calling them out for lying to me but 3 stars off because it was overpriced and I am not comfortable going to stylists who lie to a gain client, have no remorse for it, and then try to get you to come back with a free wash. I went to Yehia for a wash ,cut and style. I had been to this location once before and a guy named Chuckie cut my hair beautifully. Well after calling three days back to back to get Chuckie's availability I went in on Sat morning. After waiting three hours for him to finish clients that were ahead of me, when I finally got in his chair he says oh I forgot my razor so Elliot will cut your hair. I was very upset as I waited three hours for him to cut my hair and while I was there I only saw Elliott with one client. I wear expensive hair extensions so before Elliot proceeded to cut my hair I asked him if he knew how to do a razor cut because my extensions are expensive and that I wanted long layers and to retain my length. He said of course he did. Well to make a long story short Elliott cut the length of my hair by 4 inches which is not what I requested and my layers look like crap. He styled the hair very well- with big curls- very pretty but when I flat iron my hair the ends are uneven and when I wash its even worst. I wouldn't recommend Elliott for a cut, only a wash and style. Chuckie is good at cuts but unprofessional as I waited three hours for him to tell me he didn't have a razor. I normally like the company but I have been there on a couple occasions and I will come back every two weeks if this did not keep happening to me I go there they have different people in there so I don't know any of the people but I know yehia because I've been going to him since I was 17 off and on so I will ask for Yehia first couple times I got him I call the downtown office they said he wasn't working in that office that day he's working in the Hyde Park office so I said OK I'll make an appointment there with him so that he can do my hair earlier years you would call and make an appointment with a certain person and they will pass you off to somebody else i've never thought about it then but it just brought back memories he passed me off to someone else without letting me know and I thought OK this guy is just putting a perm in my hair for Yehia he's gonna do my hair I'm sitting there and He start blow drying my hair maybe Yehia is just going to curl my hair and the guy start curling my hair The guy was not good at all he didn't know what he was doing my curls did not hold up I was so pissed And this used to happen a lot when I was younger being passed off to someone else and nobody's telling you that some stranger is going to your hair message myself now I know why i stop coming You paid too much money to not get the person that you asked for and i made appointment at the Hyde Park location Just because they said yehia was going to be there they didn't even have me down as I have an appointment it's crazy I know you are the owner of the company and I'm not expecting you to do my hair all the time but give me someone good as your self read more

Yehia is THE best place to go if you want exactly what you ask for. I went for a color change, along with highlights and a Keratin. I couldn't be more please with my results and my hair looks and feels more healthier than ever! The staff are very nice people who greet you and ask if you need or want anything, and they also have a lot of good humor. I like this location because its easy to find and easy to park. They always offer you a beverage and the staff is very friendly. One thing they do particularly well here is color. When I first came here I was very nervous about doing anything extra to my hair, but my stylist (shout out to Tasha!) knows a great deal about hair and I went for it. I have colored my hair for years and not once have I had a problem. My hair always looks nice and usually will last for a while. I highly recommend this salon. read more

I came in here for a quick, temporary wash & blow dry only to find my hair permanently, chemically damaged on my next wash day in a variety of patches throughout my hair. 1 of those patches has already broken off about 1 inch from the root. I'm not sure what the lady who washed my hair put in it, but my texture is irreversibly compromised. I have been growing my natural hair for over 4 years, but it looks like I'm back to square 1 in trying to grow & retain a full head of healthy, natural hair. So much for leaving a generous tip... it was not deserved in retrospect. I have no choice but to take the L on this 1 but I can guarantee I won't be back here. Most of my "experience" with Yehia comes from word-of-mouth and I had heard that they were heat-heavy when it comes to straightening hair. I was in a crunch and needed a hair trim, so I went at 8am when they opened. Hany was the only one there and he cut my hair. I specifically said (and showed) how much I wanted cut off, and he cut more than that. The ends in the back looked okay, despite it being shorter than I wanted, but the front was uneven and he didn't even cut my bangs as I had asked. I'm not sure, personally, how they do with straightening hair, but I definitely won't be returning for a trim. read more

This is my go-to haircut place only because Mitch works here. He's been my barber for almost 7 years. I can't really speak to the quality of the other barbers. I used to pay $18 plus tip (cash only) for a haircut when Mitch was working in the Reynolds Club basement at the University of Chicago. Now it's about $20 plus tip if I recall, but they accept credit card. The interior is bright, clean, and spacious. All my interactions with the people there have been positive, so I'd give them my vote of confidence for customer service. read more

Avoid this place during Covid-19. I went here and prior to going asked were they going by CDC recommendations for services clients. They stated yes and also to bring my mask. I get there and I immediately noticed that it was in need of some serious renovations. I still decided to give it a try. I get to the shampoo bowl and notice that they had the bar up for partitions but no plastic etc put up to it. Since I was the only client in the salon I figured that was why so I didn't question why. All while getting my hair done SAM continues to say how mask are no good blah blah. He then asked what I did for a living. I told him I'm in healthcare. He stills continue to talk about mask and the "deadly" virus. Once done shampooing I get to the next seat and as I'm looking around I just see filth. They definitely did not do any cleaning to the place or put any safety precautions for their clients and themselves into place. Also, as I'm trying to explain to him that with ethnic hair you can't always just start blow drying our hair while it's dripping wet. He then ask me am I a hairstylist. Well actually I did go to beauty school. I am then telling him how I want my hair curled. He goes back and forth although I'm showing him pictures of how I wear my hair. Oh he doesn't want pictures and says let him do his job or he would get upset. Excuse me! I'm paying you to do my hair. All while he keeps repeatedly getting close to my face as he is talking. Back up sir haven't you heard of social distancing. Once I saw he couldn't curl to my liking I kept telling him just don't worry about it. I'm just going to throw it in a ponytail anyway. I couldn't wait to get up out of there. I'm also mad I didn't just walk out with a wet head. So if you are looking for a clean, sanitized salon that is practicing CDC recommendations to keep you as safe as possible; this is not the place to go. Yehia's has been around for years and is known for the Brazilian blow out. However the shampoo girl, who is a young white woman, needs a little more training on how to wash and comb black hair. The wash was average and the comb out was minimum if not at all. Comb from the "ends up" sweetie! Other than that the stylist save the day with their skills..blowdrying, trim and flat ironing. I went to Yehia yesterday because a good friend has been going to him for years. I have no words to adequately express my fury! This man was not even there when I arrived . I was told he would be there in 10 minutes. 30 minutes later he was not there so I walked out. Sam came out and offered to cut my hair. Yehia arrived after my hair was wet and the cut had been started so he did not see my hair in the curly state that I wear it. He took over the cutting. Despite my telling him repeatedly what I wanted and specifically that I did not want it short, he proceeded to chop all of my beautiful curls off!! My hair now is about 1 inch all over and looks like a boy's haircut! He totally ignored my repeated requests. I can't even look at myself in the mirror it is so hideous! DO NOT GO HERE if you like your hair because he will leave it all on the floor and you will leave nearly bald! And he had the nerve to charge me for this fiasco! read more

Sadly I was the fool who ignored the comments below and guess what my natural hair is FRIED! I went in for a deep condition and blow out 6 days ago and my hair has been falling out ever since. I used to have thick, healthy hair, now my hair is brittle and breaking (not shedding) excessively. I truly regret going to this place, now I'm contemplating cutting/shaving my hair off. So upset! If you have healthy NATURAL hair DON'T go here! Worst decision I've made in a long time. A few weeks later, I'm still OUTRAGED! Most of the hair I have has fallen out, so yes a shave is warranted. I totally agree with Cathleen C; this place is horrible! I used to go to both Yehia and Max and Company (the Hyde Park locations). I have very fine hair; by the time I stopped going to both my hair was so damaged and dead I had to get a hair cut just to get rid of the dead edges. The stylist I went to after frequenting both salons told me that he's done a few former clients of Yehia and their hair showed the same signs that mine did. The problem is the combination of too hot blow dryers (one time at Max's the dryer was so hot it burned my scalp), wet hair and bristle brushes do not mix. True, your hair looks great when you walk out (and they CAN get it straight) but over time it kills your hair. They are not in the business of healthy hair. And I won't even get into their lack of customer service. I would kill myself to get there after work for appointments (don't even think about going on a Saturday morning; it's an all day adventure), only to have them wash my hair, wrap it in a towel and let me sit there waiting for at least an hour or more. The last time I went there I ended up having to have a heated exchange with the guy who did my hair (he kept putting "regulars" in front of me). I now go to Hair Design International (Denise is great!) and I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes. And on top of it I found out from a former shampoo girl at Yehia that sometimes they "switch products" (i.e., you think they're using Aveda but they'll fill the bottles with a cheap imitation). Take it from me, give this place a pass. And Cathleen, don't even go back for the eye brow wax. Try the "Facial Boutique" located in the 111 N. Wabash building (ask for Vlada). I went to this particular Yehia and had Brad do my hair. He was really nice, and good. When I left, I had nice flowing tresses. However, after a few days, my hair started SHEDDING like crazy. So, I imagine it was the extreme heat put on it. Furthermore, after I washed it, I had stray straight strands all over the place. (mind you, I have natural hair with an extremely TIGHT curl) So, for straight strands to standing out, not cool. So, clearly, I went here, a while ago, like last winter, and I won't be back EVER AGAIN. That whole "I think I might want to go back to a relaxer" is out of my system! I'm happy being nappy! read more
