Inside the community thrift store section

You gotta be in the mood to be chatty when you visit here, at least that's how I felt... Like everyone was looking at me, waiting for me to buy something, that rare customer strolling through. Ugh. Not how I like to shop. Yes, strong possibility that I'm paranoid, but am I the only one? Maybe it's more accurate to say that everyone was very friendly and invited me in. Are you strong enough to withstand the guilt of not buying anything? Cuz I know I'm not. Consequently,I rushed through. My favorite 'booth' was the Community Thrift Store- no pressure there. Unfortunately the prices were a bit steep but they had so much to see and so well organized.... And lotsa books. So, I took my picture by a (yard)bird and visited the one booth, take my review with a grain of salt and pepper!

This place is bonkers! We've seen the signs when driving through Chehalis, but I never realized that Yard Birds was an insane super-swap-meet and grocery outlet store. But really, that doesn't even begin to do it justice -- you just have to go and see it. It's a huge open space inside and seems like it was once a shopping mall or big-box store or something. The main floor is divided by wooden corrals into seller stalls, which may or may not be open on any given day. We stopped in on Memorial Day and 90% of the stalls were closed, but you may have better results on a weekend day. It's incredibly frustrating to see awesome stuff inside the closed stalls and know that there's no way to get to it, especially since almost none of the sellers leave signs with contact info (or seem to have an online presence). So prepare to have your heart broken by tantalizing glimpses of closed-off areas! Most of the stalls are just random piles of stuff 'n' junk, although some are more nicely displayed and look more like an antique mall stall. The large bookstore/trinket shop called Community Thrift, right as you come in, is more organized and has tons of books for amazingly cheap prices, especially if you like upcycling old books and magazines for craft projects. There were more permanent stores against the outer walls and on the second floor, as well as a smallish open arcade on the main floor. The attached grocery store is kind of depressing and more like a grocery outlet, but there did seem to be one or two food places within Yard Birds, if you're into that. Because so many of the stalls were closed, we didn't get to go into many of the little shops, so we didn't find anything here to buy, but you'd probably have better luck on a Saturday or Sunday. It's worth a visit if you're in Chehalis, anyway, because what else are you gonna do there?

Cool idea but super run down. Fix it up and I'm all for it. Bring in some new younger crowd.

We went to the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds to go to the 2023 Garlic Festival…read more As far as the fairgrounds go I don't have any qualms with the space. Parking was relatively easy to get in and out of. There are colored zones to pay attention to so you know on which side you parked at. I don't know how well it's managed during an actual fair because I am more urban in that sense and would just as soon go to the fair in Puyallup but for festivals like the ine we went to it seemed to fit the bill nicely. The Garlic Festival itself has it's own Yelp entry which I have a review for from several years ago but that entry is listed as closed probably due to the festival being inactive during the pandemic. The festival has changed since I was last there. They have a lot of food with garlic, vendors selling garlic and other things you would see at a farmer's market but they also had a whole building at the fairgrounds playing up the relationship vampires have with garlic so there were a lot of vendors in this part of the festival that specialized in more Goth type art, gear and household decor (and more) which I really, really enjoyed. Forbidden Love was the name of this sector of the fair I believe. Yes, the Garlic Festival seems to bring in more attendees each year but it seems like the fairgrounds here are still a suitable place to have this size of festival.

Review from August 2023…read more I like garlic. Do you like garlic? Well, you won't find the fair lacking. There's a place that boasts a "Mega" Philly cheesesteak for $14, which I didn't think was mega and don't think was worth the cost. Maybe that was the mega part. That being said, it was a good cheesesteak. Not great, but good. This place does have good garlic fries. I had Uncle Joe's last year, they make their own sausages, which are very good, and they had great garlic fries. I think my favorite thus far is the Frying Dutch Girl. Other than food, there are livestock, chicken/ roosters, etc. There are rides (of course) notably a Ferris wheel which is good romantic excursion at sunset. The grandstand is where a lot of the product vendors are. A/C vendors, soap and beauty products (the Cocosheama booth stood out to me), cutlery from CutCo , Tupperware (I didn't realize that brand was still a thing), jewelry, etc. There is also a booth that has multiple businesses (Strong Tower painting & siding, Azurguard Roofing, Alpha Y La Omega landscaping and Bethel Remodel), she was super nice There are also Republican Party booths, a VA booth looking for signatures for a petition to reopen a closed location (I signed). There's a booth that educates in gun rights (it is helpful info) All in all, great fun. Hot days that are cooling down. Stop by.

Their attention to detail and flexibility was incredible. Clearly the space is amazing, the old barn has a lovely air of warmth, and welcoming space . Such a beautiful venue and surrounding grounds! The layout of the barn is wonderful for a variety of events. The space upstairs and downstairs are both amazing. Lots of natural light due to all of the windows and lets a gentle breeze float through the barn. Simple elements such as willow trees and apple trees around the property, and an occasional chicken policing the grounds, make it all feel so natural. Laurie and Jason are wonderful genuine people who are have created a wonderful site for a variety of events; receptions ,weddings, corporate or family events. They were transparent and clear about the process, pricing, and space. They worked closely with all our vendors. Located just off of I-5, the Red Barn, has great parking, clean well maintained facilities and associated equipment (tables, chairs, etc.). Our guests and friends were all pleasantly were surprised and amazed that such a great space is located in Chehalis. From a price point the Red Barn is very economical and worth the price. I highly recommend the Red Barn Studios if you are looking for a venue for your event.
