Its like enjoying a slice of Louisiana, yet in Texas. Yard Bird is located adjacent to the Texas Welcome Center (directly on the right side). You'll miss it if you drive directly to I-20 westbound. I've tried the shrimp sandwich on a previous trip, and found it to be good, yet wanting. This entree could've been sold at a larger quantity. Enter the shrimp & gator sandwich. Complete with a bag of chips, this sandwich is just enough to satisfy your hunger. Better quantity than the shrimp sandwich, and about $1-2 more. Highly worth purchasing. With a bottle of water, I probably spent just over $13 total. Parking is somewhat limited, so you are better off parking on the street of you can't find space directly next to the restaurant. Get over here when coming back home to Texas! read more

This was ok but the service was so slow. It took us almost an hour to get our food. There were only three other people in the restaurant so it wasn't like they were busy. I would have understood if the restaurant had been busy but they weren't so there was no way that our order should have taken an hour to prepare. Great start. Walked in, cute decor, friendly server. I took awhile trying to figure out what I wanted while juggling my baby and translating the menu for my mom. I'll say it probably ended up being around 10 mins. In that time, our hostess probably checked in 3-5 times and offered to explain the menu on the 3rd time out of annoyance. Out of frustration, we went ahead and just ordered for my mom and partner first. When I was ready, a couple of minutes after when I was finally able to focus without disruptions, she never came. I was prepared to just not order and sit there and watch everyone eat then leave. My partner must've figured that out bc she flagged her over and I ordered. I opted for the option of adding chips, drink, potato salad, and green beans for $3. The potato salad and green beans never made it to our table but at this point, the interaction just wasn't worth the trade off. I don't know if it was the rocky start or the actual food, but I really didn't care for it. Too much bread and not a whole lot of flavor. I'm hoping she was just having a bad day and this isn't her normal self. I'll never know as I personally will not be returning. read more

This place rocks! A hidden gem! We stopped at the information center next door. We love to find new and unique places, so we wondered over. Wow! Glad we did. Menu is different. Not your usual boring stuff. We decided to share a po'boy. Ordered the one with shrimp, fried green tomato and bacon. Prepared quick. Served on a delicious roll. Flavors were perfect. So much more we wanted to try. The inside is quaint and inviting. You feel like you're stopping by a favorite friend's home. Wooden chairs and tables. Simple but whimsical decorations. It's small but spacious. This business is family run. The young lady that waited on us was genuinely friendly. She talked to us about the menu and answered our questions. Didn't try the food, but the coffee was a hot mess. They had signs saying they had hot and iced espresso drinks. Ordered an iced latte, and should have known it was an issue as soon as the guy looked at me like a lost puppy. In the end, they made a hot latte, with hot milk, then poured the whole thing over ice. This is a sneaky place. Hidden off I-20 beside the rest stop in Waskom before the state line. It also has some sneaky good food too. I had an Alligator Andouille Sausage Po boy and "J" had a Philly Cheese Steak Po boy. They were both good. Looking around at what everyone else was eating, I saw mostly loaded potatoes or crawfish. Nice place we visited for lunch. Food was good, but could a bit more seasoning. The only thing additional that I dislike in any restaurant is the baskets with wax paper the food is served in. You'll be eating wax paper mixed with your food! Why not have regular plates? Even plastic plates or even styrofoam containers would be better. Enough of my petty gripes here. Otherwise nice place with friendly staff and definitely worthwhile visiting. read more

Second rest stop after crossing the Texas border from Louisiana. The first was closed but we needed a break, plus it was raining, we were hungry, and our dog needed a walk. Pulling a small trailer so parked with the big boy semi trucks. Wife and dog decided they didn't want to get wet but I needed to go, so off I went. Spotted the little cafe with an open sign and decided to stop on the way back for a quick cup of coffee. Nice ladies inside the cafe had good food and it was Hamburger Monday, so a burger and chips for $6. Heck yea, so I stopped in, quick order and quick delivery and great food. Burgers were big, buns were fresh, price was great. They had hats and tee shirts but no stickers - I'm a big sticker fan. Definitely worth the stop. read more

Being from New Orleans originally I'm very picky about my snowballs, but as soon as I heard they used SnoWizard syrups I knew I was in the right place. They also hooked my dog up with some snow to help him beat the heat. It's at the rest stop on the way in from LA to TX so keep an eye out and pull over if you have the opportunity. BUYER BEWARE! We purchased their "tea" as a road trip refreshment. It was advertised as a flavored tea drink but a few miles down the road my wife and I both got sick. Called and the admitted to adding "herbal weight loss supplements" to our drinks. Heart racing and diarrhea for me and her for 24 hours was a great touch to the southern hospitality. They should disclose before they add Herbalife supplements and not after you get sick. You have never spoken with me and I guarantee that my wife would never take these supplements because she knows her body can't handle them. You are a liar and are going to hurt someone with your supplements. read more

Not sure when this place changed owners but it was nothing like it was about a year ago when I ate here. My chicken salad sandwich on a crossiant came out as a salad with chicken on top. This is the only place I've ever been that has you pay as soon as you order for a sit down meal. Not once we're we asked if we needed anything while eating. Truly disappointed with this place. New Orleans store was out of bread for a Muffuletta. So I looked up where I could find one for my friends who live in Denton (TX). My stay overnight was in Shreveport (LA). Looked up Muffulettas near me...found Yard Bird and they were open. What a find!!!! And what a time finding it. Right next to a truck stop JUST OVER THE TEXAS BORDER FROM LOUISIANA! Wow! Three picky teens and two parents all ate and were happily filled. The boiled shrimp from the truck outside was spicy and delicious, the breakfast all day was a hit, and the staff are friendly and eager to please. If she's pickling okra when you are there, don't miss it! Happy we stopped before hitting Shreveport. It looked like all fast food or non-diverse options from there on.
