Yard BBQ in Rowland Heights has gone through quite a transformation over the past year. Once a Korean restaurant, it changed ownership and was rebranded as a Chinese BBQ and skewers spot. However, with so many similar style restaurants in the area, business didn't take off as expected. To adapt, the owners switched gears again, this time to an AYCE Chinese buffet concept, and that move seems to have paid off. The restaurant has since become noticeably more popular, drawing in more and more local diners. Before my visit, I had tried their food through a delivery service and was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't the typical "buffet style" cold foods, instead, the dishes tasted freshly cooked and flavorful. The seasoning was on the heavier side and oily, which makes the food rich and satisfying, though perhaps not something you'd want to eat every day if you're watching your sodium intake. Still, it was enjoyable and far better than I expected. When visiting in person, you pay at the counter and grab a plate before heading to the food area. I arrived around 11:00am, by then, many dishes were already out and freshly made. Throughout the meal, the kitchen continued bringing out new items, keeping everything hot and replenished. The buffet offers a wide range of Chinese dishes from both northern and southern regions, over 20 hot items and several cold appetizers. Some of the highlights included braised pork, pan fried chicken hearts, water boiled sliced pork, steamed eggs, stir-fried mixed vegetables, duck blood cake, and spicy chili pork. For cold dishes, they had cabbage kimchi, seaweed salad, and pickled radish kimchi, etc. Overall, Yard BBQ's AYCE Chinese buffet is a pleasant surprise. This place gets a lot of unnecessary rap for not being like a traditional sit down buffet. I'm reviewing this with the mindfulness that this was a pleasant surprise for me. This is a buffet, but the flavors are very traditional Chinese. You get a plate and fill it up with food. There is also rice and soup. There is no service here, as it's very basic. This is such a hidden gem where you can have AYCE northeastern style Chinese comfort food. Every dish is authentic northeastern Chinese. But they toned down the spice level so it's acceptable for the greater audience. They have a mix of assorted vegetable dishes to your chicken/pork/fish/beef dishes. During the evening, they'll have beef noodle soup and bbq skewers available for the same price as lunch $15/person. Everything was absolutely delicious. Service wise, it is fully self serviced. You get your bowls and plates and you will do everything yourself. But as a result, the store owners do not expect you to pay any tips. Which is great for me! Ambiance wise, it is like a Chinese cantina. You eat, you get your food, and that's it. I confirmed with the store owner that they open until 8pm only and no super late night meals. Service is horrible. If you have baby/kids don't bring them here. The lady bluntly started cleaning as we just sat down eating and tells the cashier lady, "next time if you see a baby and they don't want to pay full price for the baby tell them to take it to-go". She then went ahead and continued cleaning and told me i need to clean up since it's a no tip restaurant, which I told her that's fine we always clean up after our baby. However she continued to clean up. Very unfriendly poor service especially towards kids. My baby is 1 years old only eating rice with his hands yet they wanted to charge full price. Very rude customer service - which I guess is expected from rural country of China. Eat at your own discretion. Food: got this for late night munchie takeout. The chicken gizzards are DELICIOUS!! small little crunchy and flavorful. The corn is also awesome. The lamb skewers also yum yum. The viral crunchy pancake also 完美！ Since this was a takeout the potato came on the limp end and sorta.. soggy but I'm a fan of soft fries so it was a kinda W for me other than I saw majority of the fries were overly orange brown aka too oily. Service: ordered via fantuan. Super fast to receive delivery! Ambiance: the packaging is nice. The skewers kept warm in tin foils. The pancake and potato dishes were in plastic containers. They offer AYCE lunch. I was there and the price was not cheap. They charge the same price for a 10-year-old child. You can choose to go. People were piled up in the room. You will have to wait a long time to get your food. When it was your turn everything was gone and you would have to pick whatever you didn't like. The boss was yelling at customers and said they put too much meat on their plates. The food is very salty. I will not come back. Hygiene is another concern.if you use credit card they charge a fee. This restaurant charges $15.99 per person for a buffet-style meal, or if you prefer not to dine in, you can take a box of food to go for $13.99 per box. Last Sunday, we went to the restaurant and packed a few boxes to take home. To our surprise, while we were packing, the owner stood right beside us, constantly complaining, saying things like, "You're taking too much; you can't do this, or we can't stay in business." Then she even told us not to come back to her restaurant in the future. I just don't get it. You've clearly marked the price as $13.99 per box. We were using the containers you provided, and each box was packed at a reasonable level, with the lid fully closed, not overfilled or anything like that. So how did we "take too much"? And another thing I can't understand--between $15.99 for the buffet and $13.99 per to-go box, which one is actually the better deal? I can't figure that out either. To me, taking a box to go seems more economical. With my appetite, I could probably eat the equivalent of three boxes for $15.99 in your restaurant, but somehow packing one box to take home is a loss for you? Yet you're being so rude and even told us not to come back. I have to admire this way of doing business--this poor level of service.
