We apologized, and the hostess told us there was no reservation in our name for that time or date and that she would not be able to seat us. (There were two empty tables in the dining room when we arrived.) She did invite us to order dinner at the bar. My wife and I did so and had an enjoyable meal. Before leaving, I confirmed with the hostess that there would be no penalty charge for our late arrival for the reservation. She checked again and said the only reservation on the books for 4:45 was for "Al Weber." When we returned home to Rhode Island in early September and I checked my AMEX billing, I saw that the charge for our dinner was on the card, as well as a charge for $51.00 for what I later learned was a "no-show fee." I called Barncastle and, as requested, left a message explaining what had happened. In the message, I explained that we had arrived late for dinner but had nonetheless stayed for dinner at the bar. I asked if Barncastle might waive the $51.00 fee since Barncastle had not lost our business that night - or anyone else's business for that matter. Our (empty) table could not have been available for other guests since we would have still been eating at that table (if we had arrived at 4:45). Barncastle lost no revenue as a result of our late arrival. It is true that we were late and subject to the no-show fee but a little consideration would have been appreciated. I missed the return call from Barncastle a few days later and immediately called when I saw the missed call on my cell phone. I left another message when prompted. I never heard from Barncastle again. I did dispute the charge with AMEX and learned from AMEX that my dispute of the billing had been rejected by Barncastle and the $51.00 no-show fee will be re-added to my AMEX statement. To put it lightly, we are disappointed that the $51.00 fee is more important than working with repeat customers to resolve the issue. I will emphasize again that Barncastle lost no revenue as a result of our late arrival and missed reservation. We ate dinner and our reserved table would not have been available for other guests since we would still have been seated and eating. We visit Blue Hill yearly and spend a week enjoying the fine restaurants in the area. Barncastle has always been on our list of "places not to miss."
