Dragonfire Pizza is a solid pizza joint located in a strip mall on the outskirts of downtown Ellsworth. Inside you'll see positively medieval wall decor and an expansive menu with many options. They just so happened to have fresh slices when I arrived, so I decided to try their classic cheese pizza and the "Emerald Dragon" pizza. The classic cheese has an excellent, thin, crispy base with some sufficiently good sauce and cheese. One of the best parts is the woody, smoky crust and base resulting from the nice charring from the oven. The Emerald Dragon pizza was a nice experience! I don't usually like spinach on pizza, but Dragonfire hit it out of the park with this one. The creamy ricotta and fresh mozzarella pair beautifully and taste of garlicky goodness. The base is thin and crisp with the same great toasting on the plain slice, but the crust has a slight fluffiness that leads to a great pizza experience. We stopped in for lunch and tried a variety of ready-made slices. We had mixed reviews. The speciality summer pizza (BBQ pulled pork and pickles), and the mushroom were awesome. However, the chicken, bacon pizza was way too dry and the cheese pizza was too sugary. I look forward to trying the specialty pizza again, but I wish all the flavors were more consistent in taste. The place itself was pretty cool though. We enjoyed sitting down for our lunch and looking around at the different decor. The pizza was warmed up quickly, too so it's a great spot to stop in for a quick bite. However, all of the slices were sold as double slices, which made it more difficult to try different flavors (I prefer a single slice). Other notes - the workers didn't seem very approachable and the motion activated bell hung by the door that was annoying. read more

I feel bad for giving this review but I must be honest with our experience. I would love to update with higher rating in the future. The shop is located in a strip mall next to a gun shop and "church". They clearly worked hard to decorate and all of the booths appeared clean and had sanitizing hand wipes at every table - which is appreciated. They also have something resembling an ATM for selling and buying digital currency like bitcoins. Not our thing but ok. Additionally they have multiple displays for a variety of handmade jewelry (to be clear - the jewelry is very nice) on sale. As far as the food, ugh!!! The bread was similar to stale crackers. The meat was good and toppings were limited. The weight of the sub was substantial, but due to the quality of the bread, it was essentially inedible. I was hungry and ate as much as I could and gave the rest to the dogs. read more

Happy happy happy. It's one thing when you're friends with the owner. It's another thing when the food is actually good, really good. Let's be honest. It's hard to find good pizza in Maine. This may be the last bastion for really good pizza. We've eaten the so-called "best pizza" all over the state. The others were either not up to the hype, have gone down hill sadly, or closed shop. The Emerald Dragon was exactly what you want out of a white pie, and the Big Mac was absolutely better than an actual Big Mac. I ordered it out of curiosity and was so glad I did. Even my picky, barely-eating six year old wolfed down a slice without hesitation, and he's as picky as we are with pizza--genetic or just good taste. Who knows? Either way, if you want a good traditional pie or a good experimental pie. Go here. It's more than worth it. We drive from north of Caribou to Ellsworth. Just do it. read more

Worst cheese pizza EVER, & how do you screw up a cheese pizza!! We tried Dragonfire after all the positive reviews and we were blown away with the subpar pizza which reminded us of horrible college cafeteria food. After waiting 45 min for our pie, it was one of the most dissatisfying pizzas we have had in a long time, the sauce taste like Ragu jar sauce, dough was super thin and cheese was rubbery. Like most restaurants, Dragonfire Pizza has had its challenges over the past couple of years - a change of ownership, slashing of its schedule during the pandemic due to a worker shortage . . . you really had to be a true fan to keep track of when you might actually be able to eat there. Luckily, my husband and I are true fans. This is not a fussy, pretentious place, although the quality and quantity of its food would argue against that supposition. This is a casual place where you can bring your kids, where the bathroom is always clean (one of my pet peeves about some places), and the food is always excellent. The menu has changed recently, only for the good. They've added a onion rings (which are great!), and to-go foods. The pizza - which is available by the slice, which is actually TWO slices for the price of one, by the way - is wonderful! They are generous with ingredients in all of their food, and the pizza reflects that. It's our favorite in the area - even over Finelli's. We don't usually get the pizza, though. We get a sandwich of some sort, and Lord knows, we're going to get their tater tots, which are absolutely perfect - well cooked, brown, and crunchy, and available with all sorts of yummy adulterations. The meatball sub is phenomenal - I would be willing to bet that those meatballs are homemade, not the frozen kind everyone else serves. The sauce is wonderful, as is the herby bread. I get mine with pepperoni, and they add a whole stick of it, I swear! Did I mention that they're very generous with their ingredients? We've also had their turkey BLT, which we love also - it's loaded with bacon, and on wonderful crusty bread. We just tried the Bucking Bronco wrap, and it has become my new favorite sandwich. I'm a REALLY fussy person, and I didn't change anything about it. It was FABULOUS! I can't say enough about their salads, either. My husband and I get one and share it for the perfect portion - they're huge, and it's not just lettuce, either. We just spotted that they have chili, which we'll have to try the next time we go back. They also have fountain drinks, bottled soda, and things like Angry Orchard, as well as various bakery and dessert items. The staff is friendly and helpful, and you can almost always get in and out of there very efficiently, although they're very popular (understandably) and can get busy. Go try Dragonfire Pizza on State Street in Ellsworth, in the plaza by the Dunkin Donuts. Whatever you order, you'll be glad you did read more

Came here because of the good reviews and weren't disappointed. Certainly not a fancy dining experience but the food was good and the people were nice. Hubby got pizza before seeing the raves for the meatball sub so he regretted not trying that. Would recommend making meatball subs with impossible meatballs! Drove a couple hours to try this place out. Got there just before a line of people. Came in. We had cheese pizza and the queen dragon pizza. Both were very good. I love Dragonfire because they bake their pizza in a huge wood-fired oven that runs at amazingly hot temperatures that results in a crust that's to die for. On top of that, they use good ingredients, offer PBR on tap, the staff are friendly, and the bathroom is gender-neutral! I don't come this way all the time but whenever I've got a hankering for pizza that's better than your average (Town Name) House Of Pizza, this is where I go. This time, we got a pizza with Italian sausage, ricotta, and anchovies a Greek salad, and some PBR. All in total with tip I think it came out to about 40 bucks, which is pretty good for dinner for two and a couple rounds of drinks! You can also get fun bar food like poutine which you can't get at a lot of other places in Maine. My one gripe is that they're closed Sunday- but you can't have everything. read more

The pizza was good. It tasted like a regular pepperoni pizza, pepperoni has the perfect kick that Roni should have. The looks of the inside of the restaurant was very pretty and welcoming. Now the reasoning on why I'm giving this local family buisness 3 stars. : The crust had the perfect fire cook to it where you could taste it was cooked in the fire I loved it! But, I could taste the yeast or maybe it was the type of flour that was used. The tip to the line where crust meets was extremely thin like paper. Once you got to the crust when you think of pizza you think of air, bubbly and light weight. As I pulled the crust apart it has the "bounce back" spring to it. Was still kinda doughy which made no since to me since the pizza was cooked perfectly "as in timing" the mozzarella cheese which I'm assuming they used from the salty ness of the cheese was great when it first came out but then got very chewy. Either way even for a small child my daughter devoured it with no choking. Not as much sauce to cheese ratio as I was expecting. But over all I spent a little over $18.00 for a pepperoni pizza and 2 drinks. The pizza I ate today was probably a $10.00. Furthermore, I had gastric bypass a little over a year 1/2 ago. And I could eat two slices. Which shouldn't of happened. "Was not filling even for me" I will be going back later in the year to try it once again. read more

We had a craving for pizza one day and a neighbor suggested we give this place a try. They have every kind of pizza you'd like and if you want, you can create whatever "pie" you'd like. We were pleasantly surprised. The pizza was delicious and the staff very pleasant. The only negative comment is that one staff member was constantly rubbing their nose, biting their nails, and running their hands through their hair, and picking his teeth, all while being behind the counter, where they would then touch food items, the register, etc. That could be a game changer for us to visit again, but the pizza WAS delicious. I need to add to my original review: The young man who was working the register is the above mentioned person in this review. Every employee who used the one and only bathroom in the restaurant MAY have washed their hands once done with their business but in order to leave that room, they had to open the door and come back into the restaurant. Not one was observed washing their hands when they returned to behind the counter. Finally was able to get to DragonFire Wood Fired Pizza.. Have been in Ellsworth many times this summer with the family, however, on Sunday when they aren't open. Love the restaurant atmosphere and the friendly staff. I ordered the large cheese pizza and can watch them make it right in front of you. It was yummy.. Perfect thin crust with just the right edge burnt (which I love).. The cheese was delicious with not too much so you can taste the complete marriage of cheese, sauce and dough.. My family and I ordered take out from Dragonfire last night (May 28th) and everything was absolutely delicious. We had three orders of wings (garlic parmesan, mango habanero, and dragonfire) and they were all amazing. Big, crispy wings with just the right amount of sauce. I also appreciate that the dragonfire sauce which was advertised as being hot was ACTUALLY hot. Our pizzas were out of this world as well. One of our pies was supposed to have fresh basil. We were told that the kitchen was out of basil (no biggie) and we were offered pesto sauce instead, which was delicious.
