I have eaten here hundreds of times, a really big menu of Cantonese and szechuan dishes divided into noodle dishes, rice dishes saucy stuff,vegetables and so on. Lots of seafood duck pork and dimsum is available. This place is kind of lowbrow and not fine dining but it is a reliable stalwart of the Asian food universe here which has a long and venerable place in ottawa. I feel welcome when I go and feel like I was given fair value their dimsum is not too good but they do have chicken feet for sale which is a plus from me. read more

Yang Cheng Restaurant on Somerset street has a long history, if I am not mistaken I think it is the first Chinese restaurant on Somerset street. I know this restaurant for many years, and I used to buy my cantonese style BBQ duck from them, as they make the best bbq duck. Today I happened walk by this restaurant and decided to take out a noodle dish for lunch. The food is good and the lady ( I think is the owner) works there is very nice, while I was waiting for my food, I overheard the conversation that she had with a table full of seniors and she made an extra effort to get the some rice that are soft and warm for the elderly so they can chew easily, it is a very nice gesture excellent customer service. She told me that she will give me a discount for my order($15 instead of $16.20) I have noticed this trend in downtown the restaurant owners appreciate the business they are getting so they are giving the discount to you as a sign of appreciation; however when the man charges me he asked me for the full price, for the difference I didn't bother to argue; I just thought it is a shame. Nevertheless, I think I still would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to get some good Chinese food on chinatown and this is a good place to go. My favourite are the beef and green pepper on rice noodles, the general Tso chicken, the BBQ pork (sold by the pound), the Buddha's delight mixed vegetables and the hot and sour soup. Ok, I think I like everything here! I have mostly bought take out as the restaurant is on the smaller side but it is always busy. The bbq pork, roast pork and duck are my favourite in town. It was open late, so that's the only reason I came here. I was hungry around 10:30pm and little else was open in Chinatown, even on a Saturday night. I ordered a vegetable spring roll ($2.xx plus tax), and a mixed vegetable rice noodle dish ($13.xx plus tax). The spring roll was pretty solid, nicely fried, with plenty of crunchy cabbage filling, and served with a nice sweet plum sauce. The noodle dish left plenty to be desired -- very bland, but at least well-portioned, with lots of veggies and noodles. Was looking for something last minute. My wife loved the Tofu and Eggplant in a Black Bean Sauce, and my Chicken and Beef Fried Rice may have been the best fried rice I've ever had. What can i say... Yang Sheng is a staple in my families life. We have been going here for the last 20 plus years. Always fresh and flavorful food. I think we have tried pretty much everything on the menu at least once. The General Tao's chicken is one of my favorite foods of all times and have it just as a snack *embarrassed to say* if your ever in china town in down town Ottawa Bronson and Summerset pop in your will not be sorry you did. We were a group of six people celebrating a birthday that couldn't have gone any better, anywhere else. We had excellent service! And the food was really delicious, especially The vermicelli dish. Everyone really enjoyed themselves, and there was plenty of food, because the dishes were quite large portions. The hostess even helped us decorate and our waitress was, I believe the owners wife. We had fun with the owner as well. Our birthday girl celebrated in style. We had a round table in the back corner where we were most comfortable, despite the restaurant being full of patrons, regular looking patrons. We were not rushed in the least. We ordered here through ubereats while staying at a hotel. I SPECIFICALLY SAID to add utensils and paper plates if possible. Guess what, not a single fork was given! How can we eat our food? I'd say that the food at Yang Sheng is probably better than most Ottawan Chinese. But they are awfully slow and expensive. The dive-like atmosphere is on par with most other Chinese restaurants. Not that there's a lot of tough competition in Canada's capital. It was decent enough food that I came back. There was a sign about dim sum on the window, and I had been craving some char siu bao... so I got two orders! Again, it took a long, long time to get my food. Unfortunately, my two orders had only two baos each (4 total) and cost nearly $8. Yikes!! At home on the West Coast, I could buy a few *dozen* for the same price! hmm. Yum! After a long day in the heat and hanging out with a one and three year-old, this girl did NOT feel like cooking. Thankfully, my nanny boss and darling friend brought some take out from Yang Sheng for dinner. I really enjoyed almost all the things we ordered, which included chicken fried rice, pork buns, egg rolls, spring rolls, spareribs, shanghai noodles. sweet and sour chicken balls and maybe some other things I can't remember. My absolute faves were the pork buns and egg rolls. TO DIE FORRRR. The spring rolls were also really nice - delicate and perfectly golden. I went here the other night with some friends for a friends goodbye dinner. We were a group of five and we made a reservation ahead of time, though we wouldn't have needed to, since it was a weekday. They brought us tea right away and then we went about deciding what to order. At first we were picking individual dishes, but then realized that the dinner for four came with several dishes, as well as soup and spring rolls to start. The wonton soup was delicious, especially since it was a cold night. It was a great appetizer. Then they brought out the main plates. We had fried rice, cashew shrimp, chicken with snow peas, szechuan beef and sweet and sour pork. We had wondered if a dinner for four would be enough for five of us, but we couldn't even finish it all, we were stuffed when we finished. Craving some Bbq duck with lai fun noodles and ended up at Yang Shengs. The place is worn down but the inside is surprisingly clean. I came on a Sunday afternoon and it was almost empty. The prices are very good, around $10 per dish. I ordered Bbq duck with noodles but sadly they don't have the classic Lai fun noodles which was dissapointing- so i substituted with udon. The other choices were egg noodles, rice noodles and vermicelli. The taste is a far cry from good places in Toronto and even Calgary. The soup is bland chicken stock. Udon was cooked acceptably. There were only 4 pieces of duck meat + a bony leg but the meat itself was actually pretty good- seasoned, tender, cooked nicely but loss the crispness due to the soup. No veggies. Another downfall is that they dont have chili oil on the table, and when i asked i only got chili paste/siracha. They also dont have the sweet sauce that usually comes with duck. Gave this place another try a few days ago. While the dish I got was better than last time (braised veggies) , the service was a complete train wreck. Two of the dishes we ordered got there about 40 minutes after we ordered them. We had to ask for them at least 5 times. They were basic dishes (spring rolls and dim sum). When they finally arrived the spring rolls were cold. The other dishes were fine, but it was a huge struggle ordering as none of the staff speak English. Tables were left uncleaned long after other people had left and our table was left with dirty plates piled on it a while after we finished eating. Overall, the food is about 3/5. Service is 0/5 Ambiance 0/5 I'll add that this is probably not the best place for vegetarians. Even though I ordered a vegetable dish, it was going to contain oyster sauce. This place has been a go-to favorite for decades. They have excellent bbq pork and roast pork and their foo kin (Hokkien) fried rice is brilliant. Service is usually pretty quick and they offer fast delivery. It's not much to look at but the fact it's been an anchor of Ottawa's Chinatown for so long speaks volumes. read more

From the outside Yang Sheng looks run down, yet authentic, they have ducks hanging in the window and advertisements for dim sum etc. I keep wanting to like this place since they are one of the few Chinese places that deliver in my neighbourhood... But I just can't. EVERY dish I've ordered from here is gross. To name a few things I ordered the 3-4 times I was there: thai chicken with potatoes, vegetable dumplings, sweet and sour chicken, general tso's chicken, rice, eggroll etc. The general tso's chicken tasted like it was cooked in peanut butter and red food colouring, no spice at all, the chicken was also really fatty and barely edible. The thai chicken was also disgusting, the chicken was also pure fat (with a few pieces of bone) and undercooked potatoes. The sweet and sour chicken is 90% batter and 10% chicken in a watered down sweet and sour sauce. And to top it off, the 2/4 times I was hungry enough for this place to appeal to me, I got delivery off of an online ordering site which allows you to tip the driver online, which I did, and both times different drivers demanded cash on top of the electronic tip I gave them. I don't know, some of their dishes sound crazy and exotic and maybe if I wasn't so allergic to things from the sea I would try one of their more exotic dishes. I think their menu caters more to Chinese-Canadians that want a taste of home. Maybe the only plus to this place (for me) is that whenever I'm inside I like to pretend I'm in a restaurant in China. This is a single item review: Their spicy tofu dish. It is THE BEST fried tofu in Ottawa! If you're a vegetarian, try it. You'll love it. I call the dish "spicy tofu pillows": they've got a wonderful texture and delicious flavour. Other menu items are pretty standard Chinese dishes. The decor is very dated but the place is clean- although nothing to over-praise. I'll perhaps update this in the future as I try other dishes. read more

I'm a little delayed in writing this review. Also, I've only ordered takeout and have never set foot inside the restaurant. I've ordered from this place on three occasions using justeat.ca. I've noted that there have been a lot of complaints with regards to food quality and speed of delivery. On the first occasion, the food was delivered in just over an hour (the estimated delivery time was for an hour after I ordered). The food was pretty reasonable, and I couldn't see what all the fuss was about. My order was just for the normal "Canadian" Chinese food: chicken balls, egg rolls, garlic spareribs and Chinese greens. All pretty good except the chicken balls seemed to be from a package. On the second occasion the food was just okay. Most of the food was the same as the first order, but we tried the general tao's chicken. This was terrible and tasted like fish. Yuck. We tried one more order, early on a week day. Again delivery time wasn't bad, just under an hour; however, the food was horrible! I'm not sure what happened, but it was like I had ordered from a different restaurant. The egg rolls were completely different and tasted like they were from a box. The other items were also unimpressive. Too bad. Not sure I'm going to give this place another try. read more

Yeng Sheng is great! I order delivery from here all the time. I walked in the other day to order some takeout, and discovered that they actually have a very nice sit down area (unlike most other Chinese takeout places I've been to). When I placed my order the nice man offered me a seat and brought me some hot tea (I was soaked from the rain) free of charge. The wait was a little long, but I was in no rush to go anywhere so it didn't really matter. When I got my food is was very hot and very fresh (which I why I assume it took so long). The portion sizes are huge and the prices are very reasonable. I usually get Fried Noodles With Chicken or some variation of this. I am still in shock from my horrific experience with this establishment. I have ordered delivery about 4 times out of sheer convenience of their hours and have come to just expect extremely slow delivery and mediocre luke warm soggy food on arrival. When you need to fix a craving you do what you have to do. But today after waiting an hour and twenty minutes for my stone cold food... half way through the meal my partner bit down on a ROCK the size of a loonie in the middle of a spring roll. Horrified we called the establishment back only to receive the most incredibly rude apathetic response you could imagine. The manager was laughing at our distress and said "Well these things happen" and was initially refusing to refund our money and hung up on us. After calling back three times to try and get some sort of resolution the manager he came to our home and tried to asses how much we ate in order to determine if a refund was possible.As if that matters when you chew on a rock half the size of a thumb. It wasn't just the lack of quality in the food, the lack of health and safety concerns but the bottom of the barrel terrible customer service. Just appalling. I remember when this longtime, Chinatown fixture, made famous by its window display of hanging BBQ duck & pork, used to be so popular that lineups to get in were the norm for its well-focused, family-style, Cantonese cuisine. The original owners are long gone and, sadly, only the Suzie Wong decor has stayed. The menu now offers an extensive, all-over-the-map, pan-Asian selection at over-inflated prices. The noodle soups and the Canadian-Chinese items (e.g. chicken balls & fried rice) are hearty and reasonably prepared, but their attempt at Dim Sum and Thai is uninspired and, quite frankly, an insult to the real thing. The table service is diner mode but adequate. Tea remains as weak as it was thirty years ago, minus the charm. read more

I have been going to this restaurant since I was a teen. One of the staff taught me how to use chopsticks there. The food is always great, and very fresh. Love the General Tao's chicken, very addictive. The interior could use an update for sure, looks like a little greasy spoon, but serves the best Chinese in the city. I come into the city from the country to eat here (35 min drive)! If you go you have to try the Scallops and chicken with snow peas, comes in a beautiful fried noodle pedestal bowl.
