From attentive service to hot, fast, wonderfully flavorful mains, this was a great stop for lunch today. Service was very attentive, but not overbearing. I appreciated that we didn't appear to be assigned just one server, but that the tradition here is for multiple servers to pay attention to all tables and communicate with each other as well. Started with veggie and shrimp tempura, which was pretty standard and uninspired. The tempura sauce was fairly bland and thin as well, which was disappointing, but the tempura was battered nicely, thoroughly cooked and served hot. (Why, on a sharing appetizer, are there so many odd-numbered items? Only one sprig of broccoli, one onion slice, one squash between two people? Three shrimp, two people. Maybe it's tradition, but it's a bummer.) At $14, definitely overpriced and I'll skip that next time. The rolls, however, were delicious. The Paso Special Garlic Chip Roll was something else as it appeared at the table. A typical roll was topped with a mountain of thinly sliced onions and garlic, all deep fried and haystacked for service. The roll was spicy enough for a bit of kick, but not so much as to take away the other flavors of this roll. The menu stated it included cucumber inside, and we both agreed that, while it was there, certainly could have used. . more cuke. And we went with a tried-and-true standard Dragon Roll for comparison. It was an ample serving, well rolled and tasty with not too much sauce nor too little. Dined here on a Tuesday for an early dinner around 5:30 pm on our way to SF. Was on the haunt for another sushi place we had been before and loved but couldn't find it so this was it. I usually order Hamachi but based on the food poisoning reviews, decided to skip raw fish. Food 2/5 Ordered baked mussel, loco roll, and dragon roll in addition to garlic edamame. Garlic edamame had NO garlic, like nothing at all. It had a sweet sauce like teriyaki instead of soy sauce which was so confusing. Baked mussel gets one star as it was fairly good. Loco roll was average. The top portion was warm and then the tuna and avocado was cold which was not pleasant. Dragon roll looked and tasted awful. The fish didn't look fresh and tasted too fishy in an unpleasant way. Service 3/5 At first, we were completely ignored. No one even brought out water. Then a really sweet lady started helping us. She was attentive. Price 2/5 Prices are HIGH for a sushi place in a small town and given the actual ambiance & quality of the food. Yellowtail hamachi was $27 whereas it's $23 at most in LA! Location 2/5 Very average.. didn't seem the cleanest or most organized. Overall Would definitely not go here again if and when we stop at Paso Robles. Really had high hopes for this spot but was disappointed. We waited 15 min for a table (understandable it was a Sunday night of a holiday weekend). When we were seated we asked for hot water as we had been waiting in the cold; the server came back mentioning they were out of cups and would get us hot water when he did have them (did not happen). We ordered 1 appetizer and 4 rolls: shrimp gyoza, sexy roll, lobster roll, sa-lemon, and ichi. The food came out 25 minutes later. Overall the rolls were good, especially the lobster roll. What was really disappointing was the service. We had to ask for utensils 3 times, soy sauce boats twice (we finally started using our individual plates), and never received water refills. They are set to close at 9:30 but at 9:15 they were in an obvious hurry. As we were eating they kept asking if we were done with things (ex. soy sauce, plates, etc.). They even started tearing down tables around us in such a loud manner that it was actually startling and disruptive. Definitely not worth a $100+ experience. Maybe more like 2.5 stars. With great Yelp reviews, I walked in expecting more, but this is definitely not in the top of the sushi places I've been to - the menu was a little disappointing. I can see where many people love it and like all the rolls they have to offer, but all the tuna in their rolls is spicy. No plain tuna in the rolls, but the rolls we did have were good. I had Tempura Udon that had red bell pepper and carrot in it - both unexpected and although flavorful, the bell pepper especially added a weird taste to the soup. The chicken teriyaki was bland. Unfortunately, the reports of food poisoning are true, and yes, we filed reports with the county. We traveled to Paso for my sister-in-law's wedding and took the bride and groom to dinner on the first night. We traveled from CO, they're from SF, and their parents live in Atascadero. The reports of 'Norovirus' don't make any sense for a few reasons - (i) The only 4 people that got sick were the 4 people that went to sushi at Yanagi, (ii) We all traveled from separate areas that day, and the only people we had contact with 'in the area' as the 'report' states are my in-laws that were never sick and never got sick, (iii) Norovirus is highly contagious and we have young kids that we care for and were surrounded by family all weekend, the Bride and Groom struggled through their rehearsal dinner (I couldn't make it) with 20 other people -- you'd think at least one of them would get sick, not just the four from Sushi, (iv) The woman that ran one of the IV clinics in town called my mother-in-law and asked where we ate because she had a few others come in with the same story, and (v) If there is a 'Norovirus outbreak' and multiple cases are being reported from this establishment, would that not then imply that cleaning standards are not being met? I'm sure it's a family business, and I hate to put them on blast, but we tried calling a few times and they haven't picked up and their 'mailbox is full'. To net it out, if we look at it in a remotely objective manner, it's clear where this came from and there's no need for mental gymnastics by other relatively anonymous accounts about 'Norovirus' outbreaks. We had family eat at Marvs Pizza, Blast and Brew, Streetside, Pappys, Fish Gaucho (and I'm sure more; there were 150 people) and the only people that got sick just happened to eat at Yanagi 15 hours before. The lettuce salad had a bit of sweetness making it appetizing. Rice is cooked nicely with a soft and warm texture. Beef Teriyaki was cooked with a nicely textured teriyaki sauce which was not too salty. Bulgogi was a little bit bland and mildly overcooked resulting in a tough chewing texture. Miso soup is average, but a bit on the salty side. Food is ok, but portion size is not the best thus if you eat a bit more, then be prepared to order one more dish to the side. read more

Don't expect the highest quality but okay for now quality. It comes 4 pieces of yellowtail, albacore, salmon, tuna and white fish. The sashimi salad $20 was huge especially the sashimi on top. Sashimi huge slide instead of dice pieces as usual. The yellowtail collar was juicy and moist. The vegetable tempura was okay. The udon noodle soup was so so.. the dragon roll and the kiss of fire roll was good.
