I was craving some Chinese as I was leaving the grocery store in the shopping center and decided to try Yan. I walked in and ordered the sesame chicken dinner combination that comes with rice and an egg roll. I waited about 15 minutes for the food which was fine for having walked in, but I did think that was a bit slow. The sesame chicken was incredibly bland and had no flavor outside of the sauce that they put on it. The egg roll wasn't very good either. 4 stars for this Chinese carryout place. It is unique with the lunch special. You can walk in and they have a hot table with different lunch options. You can pick 2 entrees and a side for $5.99. However, I called in a carryout order of Szechuan chicken lunch. Service was fast and food was hot. Employee was very nice. The food had a lot of spice which is good because I love it! Portions were average and the only reason for no 5 star rating was because they don't offer soup as a side with anything or any specials. You gotta add the soup! Good food and excellent service. Met a customer here for a quick lunch today as he was passing through on his way. The food was tasty and hit the spot. It is great spot for a quick lunch. The Mongolian beef was exactly on the sweet and spicy side and the teriyaki chicken had just enough saltyness to it that you knew the flavors. The owners were friendly and took care of everything and everyone that came in. I even watched them carry food out for a man who was using a walker to help hom. This was our first visit and it was not a good experience. The steamed dumplings tasted old and stale. Couldn't eat a whole dumpling. Hot and sour soup was overly thick with only eggs, a little tofu and a couple of slivers of mushrooms. No chicken or shrimp. The garlic chicken had no garlic and the Mongolian chicken was different and not in a good way. Thick brown sauce, poor quality chicken and onions. No rice noodles. Absolutely the worst shrimp w/broccoli I've ever had in 30 years. Brown sauce was water. Love crunchy broccoli but they put broccoli fresh. Which is ok at home but no way to put any real texture and flavor in a hotel room. We were warned by our hotel manager to steer clear from this take out. But we chose over this warning. Our bad. This is the newest Chinese carryout in Hoover/Pelham that I'm aware of. I have picked up food here several times since they've opened, mainly due to their convenient location. The food is your typical Americanized Chinese fare, nothing I've had has stood out as being unique or exceptional. They have the option during lunch time of picking various entrees and sides for a set price like you'd find at a mall or airport. Decent food for a Chinese takeout. I've tried spring rolls, Crab Rangoon, Mongolian Beef, Honey Chicken, Chicken Curry, and Sesame Chicken. I always order my dishes "extremely spicy", and after a few visits, they figured out I am not kidding and really can handle and enjoy a great deal of spice. Now they always get it right. The owners are super nice, and their very well-behaved kid is in there most times I go pick up. I would give 5 stars, but a few times the chicken has been a bit on the dry side, which makes me think it might not have been cooked to order. Overall, it is a great value for the money. read more

Great food and very nice people! I typically eat off the menu and almost always get crab rangoons and either Mongolian beef or General Tso's chicken. Both are very tasty and portions are quite large for a low cost combination. My wife eats there about a 10th of what I do and the owner still remembers "chicken fried rice, no onions" when she eats with me. My only real complaint is the forks are too flimsy and way too small. Not a great fan of the egg/spring rolls but the rangoons are fabulous and that's all I eat anyway. I've tried their chicken wings mean and it's pretty good also. Appears to be the typical Chinese American strip mall restaurant for the area, menu includes the usual items, we have become accustom to. It features a multi-entree cafeteria style "take out" or dine-in plate line, as well as a menu from which to order from. The Mongolian beef is still extremely hot. Opening week it had broken up red peppers thoroughly mixed in. Today I specified mild, and it was every bit as hot but without visible signs of red pepper, a first experience for me. This is despite the item not being marked as spicy on the menu, so beware. Overall convenient and good food. We will continue to visit. read more

Second time eating at Yan. First time picked up on the way home and they were new in the area it was pretty good. Average to small portions but ok. Picked up lunch from there today and eew. . . the rice was so greasy and onion tasting. The peas were cold and not cooked. I had an egg roll as one of my sides and it was so greasy until it fell apart. Called back and told staff they told me to bring back and they would give me my money back. Ok, good policy if a person is eating in but carry outs can be a little tricky. Each situation is different but why not make it right by just giving a free entrée for next time, not even worry about giving money back if you bring back what you didn't eat to prove it was bad and hence avoid this review.
