On top of the annoying conversation they were having, they kept annoying the waitress bc their sushi wasn't coming out fast enough bc "they had somewhere to beeee", ultimately they left without eating, threw $20 on the table and took off. This is one solid little sushi place. The service was super nice and quick. The rolls didn't knock my socks off but I was hankering for some sushi and it definitely hit the spot. I'm realizing that a "spicy" roll is just a regular roll with some of this mayo/sriracha sauce drizzled on top. They get a little too generous with that stuff but I think I'll just lay off the "spicy" rolls in the future. There were only 2 waitresses the night we went, which was enough since the place couldn't really fit too many people running around. Anyway, we ordered the Yamada roll and Park Avenue Roll. Both rolls were ok. The tuna in the yamada roll didn't taste as fresh and looked kinda dry. The overall presentation of the food was great but I have to say that I have had better sushi elsewhere. The service was ok...we didn't get our teas refilled and weren't offered a refill or water. The price was decent but I'd much rather pay the price for something a little bit fresher. First time ordering here, I couldn't get sushi at my usual spot so I figured I'd give this place a try. First off we ordered the Charlie roll, mushroom soup, lemon tree roll and house salad. The rolls were beyond our expectations. The Charlie roll was everything I had wanted, A combination of sweet, crunchy, delicious, creamy and a little heat. I wasn't a fan of the house salad, I just felt that I could've had a little bit more dressing for the amount of greens I received. Also the dressing was a bit on thick side. My husband loved is roll, when I asked him to describe he gave me one word! The mushroom soup wow! Amazing! I will definitely order from here again. Good sushi in town never goes out of style! Just recently moved into this neighborhood and checking out local eats. We decided to come in here since it looked very cozy. There were a lot of choices for special rolls. I appreciate how there were less expensive special rolls and the big special rolls. I would say that the big special rolls were on par with the price we used to pay but slightly smaller rolls. We had 3 smaller rolls and 1 big rolls and we were satisfied. The charlie roll was tasty! He took a while bringing us a bottle opener and some ice. The rolls were great again, but the service just lacked completely. When we were done, the waiter didn't clean our table until we had to motion to him to make his way to our table. Never did he come once to ask how everything was or if we needed anything. We had to get this attention again when we decided to order another round of rolls. He didn't seem apologetic or even bothered to express any concern about the fact that both my friend and I seemed pretty bothered by his services!! Left with a belly FULL of sushi, but disappointed overall. Might have to try other sushi places around because this one just didn't do it for me. We were downright annoyed--and we're pretty good, patient, understanding and non-pretentious! Oh, and they have a totally ridiculous lunch hour--where the close down completely. There is no designated parking for this restaurant, but there is metered parking along Park Ave. as well as the side streets. We came here for a late lunch on a Sunday; the restaurant opens at 1:30 pm. I imagine that this place gets crowded quickly during the night as the dining area is not that big. We received a complimentary appetizer which was a nice surprise. We ordered the fire platter, yami roll, and Tokyo roll. These came out very quickly, and they were deliciously fresh. I normally give very good reviews, but here goes. Since it was my first time at Yamada Sushi, I asked the server several different questions about the sushi rolls. I finally decided upon the special "One" Super Dynamite Roll $11.95. While I was waiting for my entrée, I was given a complementary miso soup. This miso soup is usually complementary in most sushi restaurants. A very large sushi roll platter was served to me. While eating this large sushi roll, I was not thrilled on the quality of the sushi. I continued to eat and realized there was a second type of roll in front of me. I asked the server what I was eating. He told me I ordered two rolls. This was not true. We did have a brief exchange of words. Anyway, it appeared that the sushi chef might have been the manager. He told me I would only be charged for the one roll. The server did apologize. The one plus is this small restaurant is clean. Just want to say, I didn't take the remaining sushi roll home with me. Despite this situation, I am a generous person and gave a three dollar tip along with 2 Stars. The whole Park Avenue area of Rutherford appears to be really booming now. My best experiences in sushi restaurants is where you sit down at the bar and chat w/ the sushi chef. You can't get that at some, if not most, sushi restaurants. Yamada Sensei runs a small local business, not a chain. I ALWAYS stop by his place whenever I'm in the Rutherford area - ALWAYS - I've been going to his restaurant for the last 4 years. On this outing - best Saba (mackerel) ever. If you go by there, sit at the bar and chat him up. If you prefer a table, the lack of conversation will not detract from the incredible sushi. A Korean friend of mine in college told me that the best sushi chefs are Korean, and so far, he's been right. Moderately priced, but not over priced. It is sushi after all. Do you really want cheap raw fish? Yamada offers a full menu of other fare if you don't like incredible tasting sashimi and sushi. Yamada sensei tells me that most restaurants in Bergen county are dry, so BYOB! He says if you want to bring in a bottle of nice scotch, he'll likely sample some with you! read more

The best sushi I have ever had in my life. Honestly. The husband and I were on our honeymoon to NYC and stayed in a Rutherford hotel. We wanted a low-key dinner and sushi sounded good, and after reading the reviews here, we figured we'd be brave and give Yamada a try. At first glance you might think "oh this kind of looks like a hole in the wall type of place" from the front, but be not ye so deceived! The service was so pleasant. I ordered the Yamada Roll, Tuna Roll, and 2 pieces of Octopus, and was quite pleased with the taste and freshness of my meal. They even threw in an extra piece of Tuna. The Yamada roll had just a little kick to it, and was flavored well. The Tuna was simple but tasted very fresh. While I love Nizi, I think Yamada will make it into my sushi rotation in Rutherford. read more
