Lucky Girl was tasty and I also got the tropical roll (they use fake crab in it and a weird sauce that seems like bottled Italian Dressing). We ordered lunch here for pick up on a Thursday afternoon. They only have street parking available, since it's on the main street and it was just after a snowstorm, so you can imagine how that situation was. Luckily, my sister was with me and she was able to just run down and grab the food. We ordered a few of the basic roll lunch specials to share. There aren't that many options to choose from. Some of the ones we got were California, shrimp tempura, salmon, tuna, eel, and spicy salmon. None of it was very good. There was way too much rice. The "spicy salmon" wasn't the traditional sushi takeout spicy salmon, but rather a roll of salmon slices, and globs of spicy mayo blobbed on top. My rating will certainly be biased as I probably keep this business alive just by myself. Yamada Sushi is located hidden among other businesses on Park Avenue in Rutherford and offers very good sushi at reasonable prices. They have a BYOB policy (I believe) and are very good at accommodating people when they are not busy. Yamada has numerous unique sushi rolls they offer, my favorite being the Jumbo Combo roll (I do not even order it anymore, they know what I am going to get). Many times the service maybe not being 100% attentive, but they are very kind and always offering more than the average sushi place, including spring rolls and sometimes desserts. Charlie is an amazing itamae and runs a good business that I hope stays around for a very long time. read more

Please someone give this restaurant a new cd or playlist! During the hour and half we were having dinner there they had the same song on repeat. At first you don't even realize until you have then you can't pay attention to anything else but that same song that will play continuously in your head for days and haunt your dreams. This place was good. My sushi was average. I got the Charlie Special roll and it was spicy even though it didn't say so on the menu. And I don't really like things too spicy. It just overpowered the flavor. The shrimp shumai app was good, again nothing special. They did give us complimentary edamame, which my friend who has been here before said that never happened before when she was there. So not sure if its consistent. The edamame though were very good, had the right amount of salt on them. This place is BYOB as most places are in Rutherford as my friend tells me its hard to get a liquor license. So we brought wine and they supplied the glasses. My friend had udon. She loves the udon bowl here. Comes with two pieces of shrimp tempura and some california roll too. Overally okay. I did like the atmoshphere and we got a nice booth by the window and was able to talk and catch-up. Next time im in Rutherford though I would want to try somewhere else. read more

The fish were all very fresh and the overall presentation was well put together. The meal was very filling. Relative to other sushi places, Yamada seems to give you a lot for your money. The rolls were presented nicely and they delivered on taste. I hate to say that the "sushi was fresh" because Goddamn, sushi better always be fresh...it's raw fish, for crying out loud! But nevertheless, the salmon was melt-in-your-mouth amazing and the rice was the right temperature and seasoned very well. Street parking only, which can be a pain in the bodangs in Rutherford. You don't need to pay the meter past 6:00 PM, so save your quarters. They offer lunch specials, however, they close for their own lunch break between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM on weekdays. This spot is super average/borderline a little below. The place is small and we grabbed a seat in the back. We ordered up four rolls thinking that would be more than enough for a light bite for two people. It wasn't since these rolls are teeny tiny. Not a lot of fish, not a lot of rice, sloppily put together, they all pretty much fell apart upon eating. They start you off with a microwaved fried veggie roll. Nice touch, but not really. The fridge opened and I peered inside to see the frozen packaged bags of gyoza and shumai, so there's that. The rolls took forever to come and when they did, we were surprised to see that they weren't overflowing with delicious fish, but a bit meager. They were good, just small and not cheap. Usually when you order a special roll off a sushi menu, your eyes widen with anticipation since at $15 a pop they are a meal in itself. Not so much the case here. For whatever reason all the oxygen in the room gets taken up by places like Hiro in Lyndhurst, or Nizi and Yellowtail in Rutherford but to me they're all sizzle and no bacon. Osaka in Lyndhurst has been our favorite for years now and on a whim we decided to give Yamada a try (okay, originally we wanted to hit Samurai Sushi in East Rutherford but the wait-time was too long) and I gotta say: this place is phenomenal. As soon as we were seated we were treated to a free spring roll - deep-fried and still hot, spicy and delicious. We're off to a promising start. This roll has crunch and heat (sliced jalapenos will do that!). That other roll has these stunning and vibrant colors and tastes as good as it looks. That other other roll might be better than the first two. Wildly generous with the snowball-sized helping of wasabi and massive heaping of pickled ginger. We came back for a second visit taking one of our kids that's a fan of sushi and it was just as good as the first time around. Heads up: when you see the three-pepper graphic next to a roll - it ain't no empty hype. Those will burn out your mouth. Good pricing. Cool staff. Parking can be an issue. read more

I have been here many times and I will continue to keep coming. They have fresh sushi and lots of different types of rolls. The atmosphere is pleasant and the staff is very nice. Sometimes they give free miso soup or free tiny appetizers depending on when you come. I like that they are BYOB but they also offer different drinks or tap water. Besides the sushi, I have also tried their ramen and their fried ice cream. Both were delicious. The restaurant is located on a main road so it's nice to be able to walk around after and digest your good. You can definitely distinguish the freshness of the sushi. It wasn't until last night that I noticed smaller sushi restaurants are higher quality than all you can eat places. The temperature of the seaweed salad and sushi were precise. Where as all you can eat restuarants, the sushi tends to be more room temperature making it more difficult to eat. We ordered seaweed salad (4.95), Black Dragon Roll which came with shrimp tempura, avocado topped with eel and seaweed (12.95), Super Hot Roll which came with deep fried red snapper, avocado, cucumber on the top spicy crab crunch with their special hot sauce (10.95), and the special roll of the day! The special of the day came with salmon and cucumber with avocado on top. All rolls were delicious, but the Black Dragon Roll was our favorite. I think the sauce topped this roll off! The staff was helpful, fast and accommodating! We noticed they treated all their guests with two spring rolls. Yummy and thoughtful! I will say that this is my first visit. That said we have definitely found our sushi spot. Great mom and pop feel in comfy surroundings. Service and chefs were very friendly and very quick. Food was amazing. We tried the house salad, miso soup, veggie dumplings, two special rolls, and three simple rolls off the menu. Dressing on the salad is one of the best ginger dressings I have had. Nice not to have a mayo based dressing for once. Get the gyoza, you won't be disappointed. We commented on how good they were, usually the veggie ones aren't so good. I have a hate and love relationship with this restaurant. Its small, yet cozy, warm and inviting. On the weekends they seem to make their money from pick-up orders and not dine in diners. I usually go on the weekend and there's usually 1-2 tables tops on a Saturday night which makes you question if its worth staying. Nevertheless, I always do because I love the food.They provide complimentary Haru Maki (deep fried vegetable rolls) to start. They are ok, not the best or worst either just very very crispy with not much going on. So I ordered the garden salad - wasn't good, just blah Spider appetizer (deep fried soft shell crab) - delicious!! Crispy, meaty and full of flavor and texture. Yami Roll ( Shrimp tempura, avocado, topped with spicy crab and crunch)- My favorite, but its small and not filing Shrimp Teriyaki- Small portion, Overcooked but tasty Mouchi green tea- frozen solid, but tasted good What I dislike about this place is the small portions they provide and lack of good service. For the price they charge, they should give more food, I usually leave satisfied but never stuffed. Why is service so crappy if you only have 2 tables in the restaurant to tend to? I used to waitress so I know it's not that difficult. Stopped by here on national sushi day since it's nearby and got good reviews, and I definitely agree that these reviews are justified! The place is located on a very cute main street in Rutherford, which was nice to walk to and the restaurant itself is small but sweet and well decorated. Our server was friendly and quick, though she only brought us water once and I could've used a refill, but that was my only complaint. They gave us two tiny little spring rolls to start which were a really nice touch! I would order them next time and pay for a full size they were so good!! We ordered the fried chicken to start (supposedly their chef special) and that was honestly the worst part of the meal, it was hot and well seasoned, but not crisp at all. For sushi, my boyfriend got the sweetheart roll, though I don't really remember what was in it, it was nice and fresh, plus on the lighter/healthier side since it was rolled in brown rice which I enjoyed. I got the Nin Ja roll which had shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, and asparagus and was rolled quite large and then covered in panko and fried - decadently delicious.
