We stumbled across Yama Sushi and I was pleasantly surprised. This place is so well decorated and vibrant. The server was friendly and knowledgeable. We selected the shrimp tempura roll and iron man roll and we our tastebuds were happy! They had the right mix of crunchiness, flavor and umami. We also got the steamed shrimp shumai and miso soup. Disappointed. Japanese is my favorite and I am always looking for another great find when traveling. The sushi and the rolls were good a d fresh. The problem was the sizes of each. Everything was reduced in size but not in price. The sushi was extra short and the fish did not overlap the tall bed of rice. Therefore the fish to rice ratio was way off. Another example is the rainbow roll, a California roll with assorted fish on top. The fish was barely covering the top. There was a piece of tuna on one and it was just a little larger than a Chicklet (for you youngens, Google the gum type), but half as thick. It was like a tuna wafer. During this Covid 19 season, there is one thing i'm missing in my life as a foodie... it's having sushi. There is nothing like watching your sushi being rolled by a sushi master and tasting the beautiful creation of raw fish being transformed. Honestly, I was craving sushi more than ever. I am giving them an extra star to add to my last review because Yama saved my weeks and weeks of craving. They were fast at taking my order on the phone and keeping me posted of when my food was ready. They made sure to call me that my food was ready for pick up. They have table at the entrance of the door for me to sign my receipt and pick up my food. I was so happy to see that they included me an extra 4 piece roll on the house. Just like my previous experience here. Service is top notch and the people who work here are super friendly as can be. I was greeted on the phone and giving my order was a piece of cake. The food was still hot off the grill and their was no complainers coming from my boys regarding their chicken katsu. The miso soup and salad was nice. I don't know about how things tasted for me last time stating that they "were not the best" but seriously... having not tasted sushi in a hot minute got me rethinking how greatful I am to know Yama is still keeping their restaurant business alive and that I can get my needs met..(sighs of relief*) I know despite the fears of having covid, the restaurants are what is keeping people sane. Yama has kept me sane lol. I was so excited to eat my rolls of white tuna! I demolished every last bit of my sushi so quickly. Who doesn't love AYCE made to order sushi. They have really fresh sushi and cooked or raw whatever you choose. This is not a buffet but real made to order sushi rolls. The gyoza dumplings were fantastic. You need to show up hungry because the menu is packed full of great options. The price is great for a sushi restaurant because we can easily spend over $100 on sushi night. This is all you can eat ordered from the menu. The restaurant is clean, with some nice bowl/chopstick sets hung on the walls as decor. They start everyone off with a little plate of pickled cucumbers, which is crisp and refreshing. They have quite a variety of rolls, none of which disappoint but my favorite so far as got to be the asahi roll with fried oysters! There's just so much flavor and complexity to each roll with the variety of fillings and sauce. With each order I've made so far, they've always thrown in a little something "on the house" which gets me to try something new on their menu, and it always feels great to get something for free. Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday. The restaurant was pretty full, but there was plenty of seating at the bar. I asked if they had AYCE and the waitress told me they didn't, however I stuck around because I was hungry. They brought ought a free cucumber appetizer to get the juices flowing, and I ordered the fried Shumai, Superman and Iron Man rolls. The shumai came out first and were piping hot, crispy and really good. The rolls came out shortly after I finished my appetizer. They were 8 pieces each, and pretty good sized. They threw in in two extra pieces of sushi for me to try which was much appreciated. The rolls were fresh and both had great flavor. The sushi was good and I left satisfied. I will probably stop in for lunch again to try some of their other specialty rolls at some point, but you will probably find me at the many AYCE places around town on a more regular basis. read more

I'm not a sushi eater. My husband is. However, I love GYOZA and theirs is my favorite out of all the ones. I like their little cucumber salad they first bring out but I really wish they didn't put seaweed in it. I've had the chicken with the katsu sauce it was good (this was in the past). I've also had their chicken teriyaki in the past that was also good. My husband normally gets the Philly roll and the California roll. And I think it's cool that they give you a free roll. read more

This place doesn't look like much from the street, but the service we encountered was great, despite them having a sign that they were short staffed. My husband got a variety of sushi platters and loved every one. I got the beef teriyaki, which I didn't love and is the only reason I'm giving this place 4 stars. The meat had quite a bit of fat on it, and it was almost like a piece of sub-par beef with teriyaki sauce on top. I did love how many veggies came with the dish though, and we all really enjoyed the plum sake (we ordered it warm.) The bathroom was very clean. Our friends who are local sushi fanatics shared that this place has the biggest rolls of sushi out of many others they've tried in the Chesapeake area. I ordered off the lunch special menu, very reasonable, 2 sushi rolls (4 pcs ea), soup, salad, rice, & 2 pcs of fried shumai. The two rolls were the Ironman and the Hawaii Roll. Great choice.. go me! All this for $8.95? Yes please!! Everything was delicious! I was also given complimentary cucumber salad and a 2pc of their candy cane roll. Every morsel of their food was yummy! This restaurant went above and beyond. In the area for work with a coworker who lived around here and she recommended this place for lunch. Upon our arrival, we were immediately greeted and seated. It wasn't long until we received our drinks and complimentary cucumber salad. As my coworker and I are enjoying our hot plum sake, the waitress brought us complimentary edamame to enjoy. The interior is aesthetically pleasing and the atmosphere was nice and laid back. Seemed very clean. The bathroom was well kept. Our waitress was wonderful throughout the entire time. The menu page for the sushi rolls is extensive and can be a little overwhelming. I probably changed my order 5 times before I settled on what I wanted. What is nice is that some of the items are color coded that states what is raw, what fish it featured, etc. We ordered 3 specialty rolls and one handroll. There were about 4 other tables in the restaurant at the time. The wait was not long at all! We received our food at what it seemed like within 10-15 minutes of ordering. I had the Superman III and salmon skin roll. Everything looked great and the plating had some nice touches to it. We were also given a complimentary sushi roll as well! Everything tasted as good as it looked. The only downside was that I ordered my salmon skin roll as a temaki (hand roll) and received the opposite. Regardless, it was still delicious. At the end of our meal, we were given pieces of chocolate as a little dessert. I would definitely come back and try other things on the menu. Stumbled upon this establishment on my way to Sweet Frogs. When I first enter into this place, I noticed how beautiful the decor were. These new asian restaurants are really stepping up on their decors. It was the burnt orange walls and hanging Christmas ornaments from the ceiling that gave it the WOW! They had a fountain & hearing the waterfalls, I felt like I was in a salon if I closed my eyes. The staff and waitress was so sweet and accommodating. Great customer service. Ok so for the food....It wasn't the very best sushi place for me, the taste was a little bland. I go to sushi spots like once a week bc the asian in me loves it! I had the salmon teriyaki and it looks as if they just grilled the salmon with no seasoning and let it swim in the Teriyaki sauce; which the sauce for me was very sweet. My hubby had the steak teriyaki and it was the same for him too. I also got the Volcano roll, this too was just ok. It didn't come to my table hot but that's ok. Their ginger salad dressing was very good tho! Now that's the best I've had. The ambiance is so lovely. It's dark and cozy with this water piece with relaxing water sounds in the center. The staff came up to me immediately and were so nice. I ordered online and the gentlemen checking me out gave me two drinks for free and an extra sushi roll on the house. He was soft spoken which made me feel comfortable and it was just such a lovely time. I got the chicken katsu and the ichiban rolls. The sashimi appetizer was had a total of 7 teeny tiny pieces, not even two of each type of fish. The pieces were not only super tiny but were really rough and very fishy, as if the fish was older and not very fresh. All the rolls were the same in that sense. The cost is equal or less than any other sushi restaurant we've been to in the Hampton Roads area. All costs have increased in the past year for groceries and gas. I love sushi and this has to be the best place I've found in the area for sushi. They have a very vast menu and my fiancé and I could not decide which ones we wanted to go with. However, he pointed out that on the table was a card that had their special listed it was for 4 different rolls, an appetizer, and 1 of each of soup and salad all for $49.99. This was perfect. Forgive me because I don't remember the name of all the rolls. I do know one was called Iron Man. But the most important thing is that all of them were delicious!! They also gave us a free roll to try! It was so much food!! But man was it good! We had fun trying all the rolls and it was plated beautifully. I ordered the Yama roll and we also received the Hawaiian roll on the house. The set up on the dish was beautiful. the only thing I didn't like was the sake. Ugh..tasted like rubbing alcohol..Maybe I think it was supposed to be that way. They do serve alcohol, but it is just beer, wine, and sake. Any booze is good for me! The décor is nice and colorful. This time I got the shrimp tempura roll and chicken teriyaki. Shrimp tempura is bomb. Hands down my favorite item. But being that I don't eat sushi like that, not sure how much my opinion is worth lol. The Chicken Teriyaki is just okay. They give you like 3 or 4 pieces of shrimp with mixed vegetables and rice.
