***UPDATE #2*** -- Later that night...
Before update #1, earlier today, I was told my service was turned back on. When I got home, my internet was working, but my TV was not. Called Comcast, was on hold for 35 minutes. Once I finally got someone (Antowne) I was disconnected. Called back, waited another 10 mins before she got it running. So... down to 2 stars.
***UPDATE #1:***
So, after my experience, I sent a twitter to @ComcastCares. This guy wrote me back personally within 5 minutes. He then put me in touch with Comcast's executive office! After talking to this lady for 5 minutes (she was thoroughly briefed on my situation), she explained to me as best she could what happened. She then set up a special promotion (to woo me back) where she drastically cut my cable bill for the next year! So they go up to 3 stars. :) And I will stay with Comcast for now, but definitely buyer beware.

The ordeal began when we moved in Mid-May.
When we moved, we set up a transfer of service with Comcast. The move went smoothly. We were activated in our new residence without incident. We were pleasantly surprised! A month went by and then our service was turned off. I called Comcast and they told me that we had a balance due. I was confused by this given that we had auto-debit set up. As it turns out, Comcast had made a mistake when they transferred our service and the old account was not properly closed. The old account's billing address was correct, but the "service address" was our new address. Conversely, with our new account, the billing address was our new address but our "service address" was our OLD address. The lady on the phone admitted that things were "really messed up." My old account had a balance. My new account had a balance as well (which is why the service had been turned off). The new account had a balance because the auto-debit had not been activated yet. We were not told, but it takes up to two billing cycles for this to take effect, even after a move. We assumed that auto-billpay would just resume as normal since we had not been told otherwise. So I paid the balance on my new account of around $140 to get my service turned on. Unfortunately, the auto-debit on my OLD account (the one that was mistakenly left open) TOOK EFFECT and took $290 out of my account. So in the course of about a 4 hour period, I had sent $430 to Comcast. In a panic, I called my bank and put a dispute against the $290 charge. I got the money back and the money was taken from Comcast. My service was turned back on and everything seemed fine.
A month went by and my service was turned off again. This time, a balance of around $300 was on my account. I explained the situation from the previous month. The customer service representative seemed very confused by what had happened and could not tell me with any clarity why this charge remained. I paid for my next month of service and my service was restored. They also told me that a $140 credit was being sent to my new account for a previous bill that I had overpaid. I was a bit confused by this, but wasn't going to complain.
Another month went by and my service was again turned off. I looked at my latest Comcast bill and noticed my balance was $10.78... Which I had paid through the auto-debit. Once I called, though, I was told that I still owed nearly $180 in late fees and penalties (this still being related to my old account that was incorrectly transferred). At this point, I was at the end of my leash. I asked to be re-directed to a supervisor. No one was available at the time so they took my phone number and told me that someone would be in touch with me by the end of the business day. No one called.
The next day I called back and told them what had happened (told the story for the thousandth time) and received the same line of responses... That "the system is telling me that you have a balance due and you owe THIS amount to get your services turned back on." Any thing I told them about my ordeal with the move fell on deaf ears. I explained to the representative that a good company would say, "You know what? We messed up when we moved you. We realize that. We dropped the ball and didn't notify you about the auto-debit not taking effect right away. This is our fault. Since you've been a loyal customer for 3 years, we're going to take the hit on your late fees. We're going to clear your balance so we can continue this relationship with you." But this did not happen. I just get the same old run-around from them. They can either clear this fault off the record and Comcast can go on getting thousands of dollars from me over the next two years... Or I can hang up the phone, take my equipment to the service center and close my account forever. Comcast seemed to prefer the latter. read more
