I made it to their second ward location before they had to move and OMG best coffee I ever had in HTown. I cant wait until their new spot opens up. I still need to make it out to their pop-up location in the heights before they disappear! The guy who helped us out was knowledgeable about the coffee they serve up and was very friendly as well. Was in the East Downtown area so decided to stop by Xela for a morning coffee. There's a small parking area connected to the building. The menu was honestly a bit overwhelming, but the barista who took my order was very patient and asked what I normally like and made recommendations. He also mentioned all their drinks are oat milk based. I asked for a recommendation that was sweet but not too sweet and I went with his recommendation of the Stardust, which was honestly super good and had a strong espresso flavor but also had some sugar and cinnamon for sweetness. WOW! What a hidden gem! Located right off of Canal Street in the second ward neighborhood, Xela serves some amazing coffee, tea, and light bites. The service is friendly and each drink is crafted with attention and care. Drinks can be ordered from their front order window and are brought out to you by the barista in the seating area behind. Peak inside of their window and you can tell this team is serious about coffee. They have all of the coffee equipment and tools needed to make a seriously great cup. I opted for the iced Valley Girl, a double shot of espresso, Mexican vanilla and traditionally oat milk, however I swapped this out for pistachio milk for an extra $1. Take note that oat milk is their default for all of their drinks (huge claps for coffee establishments that don't charge extra for alternative milks) but the pistachio milk is fantastic and well worth the extra charge. The drink was bold without being overly acidic or strong. I would absolutely get this again. Xela offers their roasted beans for sale and almost all of their cold drinks in a bottle to go. This is a great option to stock up for the week if you're not able to stop by in person. They also offer gallons of cold brew concentrate to take home and prepare yourself. While they have a wide variety of creative drinks, I will note that it is a little challenging to tell what all is in each drink as the menu just states the name. Luckily I had reviewed their instagram page in depth before my visit (@xelacoffeeroasters) and saw the descriptions on the bottled drinks. It's home away from home! I tried a Duvalín, along with a couple of their breakfast tacos. Everything tasted incredible and fresh. The drink especially surprised me, as I wouldn't think to combine hibiscus with coffee, but it oddly works! Customer service was also great, with staff taking the time to explain seasonal options. The wait time was also very short, it couldn't have been more than a couple of minutes. Parking can be a bit tricky, as their lot is quite small. Great local neighborhood coffee spot! They have outdoor seating that is perfect for nice days out. They also have breakfast tacos for sale in the morning. I love the Thai Matcha! I ordered "daily the works" and it was pretty good. It was the closet to a drip coffee that I could order. It was more like an americano with some extra ingredients. They do have other cold brew choices but that's not my preference. The good: my bro in law lives like 30 sec from this place so I see myself stopping by again. Love the coffee cups ! Easy to drink from and kept my coffee warm. Also, the coffee was hot when I first got it but didn't burn my fingers. Not sure what it was but the cup was designed a certain way that made my drinking better I know it sounds crazy but the cup didn't feel flimsy cause of the lid. I never once had to worry about the lid popping off. The okay : they don't have just a plain drip coffee and I didn't feel they had much other bake goods or other coffee shop like choices. You pay and get your change in this door. Another words, no hand to hand money exchange here. Not so good: it was a bit awkward when paying for my coffee. A worker told me that their machine had been indicating "declined" for previous customers and it was probably the machine. After 4 different cards and multiple declines...another person came by and it still didn't work. Luckily, I had cash and was able to pay that way. Driving away, not sure what would have happened if I didn't have cash that day. Oh well. I'll be back for sure. Cool place with some cool vibes outdoor seating. I went on a Friday afternoon and just a note they closed at 4 pm. I guess makes sense as they seem to be more small business and not national food chain. read more

Small spot for a nice day out! Today's weather is 67 degrees which makes this spot enjoyable. I say this because there is no inside seating. Umbrella patio is limited and could be not enough when temp gets higher. They have their own menu with some twists to it. My choice today is the Magic Johnson which is based with a cappuccino adding cinnamon and honey. As a bonus, they made it with oat milk and it was hot, quick served and delicious. First let me just say the Stardust iced espresso drink is delicious. Like out of this world tasty. Like can't get enough, need three at a time, delicious. But the ordering process is a little off. Most features of customer service are missing and the experience, impersonal. First, it's hard to see when they are ready for you to order. Then, the back and forth of the microphone and ordering is rushed and a little confusing. For a first time, I felt rushed and uncomfortable. Like I couldn't ask any questions. The sign with drinks is small with lots of information. I would have asked for an iced americano or iced doppio so I could try their espresso, but was surprised to discover they have no ice for water when I asked for ice water. So is everything prepackaged? What's the calories and carbs? None of those things are listed on the bottles. I'm not from Houston so I spoke to a friend from the area who said it could be largely the result of expectations put in place during the pandemic that the service feels impersonal. And I understand we're still coming back from things. And the product I had was really good. So just hoping some of these things work themselves out. read more

I was today years old when I learned this spot existed in the second ward ‍ Thankfully my friend told me about it on our drive back to Houston so we stopped for an afternoon cup. Small parking lot and street parking all around. Service was lovely, so kind and welcoming. They sell coffee beans, small medium and crazy large bags. I ordered the matcha and it was fantastic! I can't remember what all was in it but it was delicious once your order is ready, there is a silver box that you open to get your coffee out of to the left of the window of where you order. There's no seating inside the building, but there's a good amount outside for you to sit and enjoy your drink. Customer service- Great! Made it out to this spot early on a Sunday morning to grab a cup and enjoy their back patio/garden area. The service is friendly and helpful, an overall welcoming vibe for this Second Ward coffee joint. The setup is a bit odd that you order through a walkup window and pick up your order in a metal box, but it helps keep the process efficient, perfect for grab and go days. However, if you want to hang out, they have several tables around their space for you to enjoy. I ordered one of their specialty drinks (I think the name was Dirty Kirby? or at least had the name Kirby in it) and it was a delightful blend of cinnamon, oat milk, and espresso. I've been coming here for years for their convenient to go bottles of espresso drinks, but this was first time getting a drink for here (they have a large patio with colorful street art) and it's awesome! I got an OG (espresso and oat milk- if you want a drink that has milk and isn't sweet at all, this is it) and my partner got a screwhead (cold brew and espresso) and they came out with delicious foam from shaking the espresso. They look like cocktails - beautiful and delicious! The folks working here are always kind and patient and willing to answer whatever questions you have about their drinks. The coffee: Xela is probably my favorite Houston coffee roaster. They have some of the best beans I've tried, and they supply another favorite coffee shop of mine, Throughgood. The coffee here is really excellent. The drip is bottomless at $2 and the cortado is prepared perfectly. There's enough milk to give it some body and smoothness, but little enough to really highlight the espresso. If I were recommending a place just for the coffee, I wouldn't hesitate to suggest Xela. They also have some more basic drinks like the Valley Girl for people who enjoy those types of drinks. The staff are super friendly. They are chatty and just nice overall. The biggest drawback of Xela is that it only has outdoor seating, which isn't the best in the Houston summer. When (if) it gets cooler, it's a nice space. It's colorful and shady, with a good amount of tables and chairs. Overall I would say this is a great place to sit and chill with an excellent cup of coffee. read more

Second Ward specialty coffee shop with colorful exterior design that is perfect for the neighborhood. If you like drip coffee like I do, you have to settle for an Americano. No batch brew. The flavor is pleasant, if lacking in intensity. I prefer to buy their whole bean coffee and just make a pour over at home. Their beans are distinctive and freshly roasted. Unfortunately, they've priced me out of their offerings. As of February, Xela was selling an 8 oz bag of single origin Guatemala at $20. There's no indication of the ounces on the bag, but at some point they decided to decrease the size from 12 oz to 8 oz while maintaining the same price point. Only a couple of years ago a single-origin 12 oz bag was typically $17. There's more. They tack on a sales tax at the point of sale, even though the state does not tax packaged coffee that is not ready to drink. Unethical. I enjoyed supporting this business in the past, but simply put, they've lost me. read more

We frequent this coffee shop often because the drinks are good and it is quick (the drinks are premade and bottled). The service is usually friendly. You order at the window and they put your drinks in a box that you open when your order is ready. However, we no longer will be visiting Xela because they have recently started adding a $1.25 "to go" charge on the bottles. This charge makes no sense and makes me wonder if they are just trying to squeeze more money out of the customer. We will take our business elsewhere. read more

I just moved to the EaDo area from my beloved Montrose, and while out exploring, ran into this cute little 2nd Ward gem. They were out of oat milk, so they suggested I get my latte with their home made pistachio/sunflower seed milk. Say whaaaaat? It was really creamy and good! The girl at the counter was nice and even offered to make me something else if I didn't like my drink. That wasn't necessary but the fact she asked got hella points in my book.
