Overall, both really solid choices. Now the atmosphere: The vibe here is chill, moody, elevated, but approachable. At the bar, there's a large painting of ships at sea on turbulent waters. There are no substitutions to the menu and the steak is cooked medium. Keep this in mind before going. The meal starts with warm bread and sea salt butter. It was delicious. The Caesar salad has a strong fish taste, very obvious they make the dressing fresh with real anchovies. The steak is served with a peppercorn sauce that is good on the steak and the fries. This was my first time at Wright & company. The door is actually on the side of the building and you take the elevator up to the 2nd floor. Try to get a seat near the front so you can look down onto Woodward Ave. Gary was our server and he was great. Attentive without being over-bearing. The drinks were more expensive than I expected. This is a hidden "literally" gem " in downtown Detroit. While it has a Woodward Ave address, you have to access the restaurant through a door on John R St, and take the elevator up to the second floor. The decor is vintage with a really cool vibe. They have ample bar seating, plus a good amount of booth and table seating, lots of windows overlooking the city. If going on the weekend, we suggest making reservations. Our server/bartender, Lia was great! She took excellent care of us, attentive and friendly. Great craft cocktail menu. We just did small plates on this visit. I love how you have to take an elevator to the restaurant (like a secret location). The menu was disheartening. The options are mad limited. I was not impressed. I had been wanting to try this place for years, and finally got the chance last night when two friends, my husband, and I came here for one of the friends' birthdays. We started off with drinks and the sliders - my husband and I split the fried chicken slider and the pork belly, both of which were good, but the tomato (aioli?) on top of the fried chicken one was excellent. I had the Out in the Meadow cocktail, which I also liked, as it was fruity-tasting. We split a ton of the dishes, which are made for sharing: -Artisanal cheeseboard: this was delicious but could have been larger, IMO, since it was $38. It came with three different cheeses, an olive oil flatbread, and "rotating accompaniments," per the menu, which for us included cashews, local honey, and little cubes of jam. The cheeses included a spicy cheese (too spicy for me unfortunately), a sheep's milk cheese which was delicious, and a wine cheese. -Michigan mushroom pate: this was very good, as I love mushrooms, and it comes with huge pieces of sourdough with flaky salt on top. -Sweet Potato Gnocchi - this one was also good, but I did taste the fish (there is fried bonito on top) -Roasted Cauliflower - this was my favorite of the dishes we got, as it was amazingly creamy. It does come in a fish sauce, and also had roasted garlic bread crumbs and parmesan -Salad of Grilled & Chilled Carrots: This was the only miss for me, as it was a bit smoky-tasting and I'm not a fan of that, but the others at our table enjoyed it. -Wildline Caught Walu: I'm not a fish person but tried this and enjoyed it! It had a creamy/buttery taste and kind of reminded me of chicken, actually. It's topped with a black licorice glaze which was also different. -Bonus dish: we had some time before our Candy Bar reservation down the street so we had the Yukon Gold Potato Mochi, which was excellent - don't be scared off by the "Mexican chili crisp" that it's topped with, it just provides a tiny bit of spice. I'm a big fan of mochi but had never had it wrapped around a potato, and it was very good. For desserts, our friends ordered the Dark Chocolate Ganache, and we got the Churro Cake, as I love horchata and it comes with a horchata cream. I honestly was not a huge fan of either dessert (our friends let us try theirs) but I will say the Ganache was tasty albeit super decadent-tasting. The Churro Cake reminded me of banana bread but more cinnamon-y / churro-tasting, and it was just okay, as I'm not a big fan of cinnamon. Waitstaff here was excellent, especially with the water refills. Everything was a bit pricey here (best value is probably the sliders, at $5 each), but is definitely worth it for a fun or special night out. I'd love to return in the future and try more of the menu, especially the braised sweet corn - I had a dietary restriction just for that day, and couldn't have corn - or the steak or chicken. read more

This was an average dining experience - I don't think this restaurant is worth a special trip. The sliders and churro were awesome and the highlights of the meal. The root vegetable salad was way underseasoned and not that interesting - it had the potential to be bright and acidic and punchy but it was just tame and boring. The hash brown was overly vinergary and didn't really taste like potatoes, though the chive sour cream was yummy. The mushroom and sunflower sides with the walu were so so tasty, and the walu was perfectly cooked, but they didn't seem to go together well, so it felt like eating 2 different dishes. Cocktails are very tasty. We shared a couple of appetizers and they were quite good as well. I did deduct one star because service is very slow. My partner and I were there early, and there were maybe eight to ten other people there, but services was excruciatingly slow. I understand if a place is busy, or understaffed, but they were neither when we were there. Just getting our check and trying to pay took almost forty-five minutes. About thirty of that was asking for our check multiple times, the other fifteen or so minutes was waiting for someone to actually take our payment. I do still recommend going here though. We had a reservation for a Wednesday night and I'd say it was needed unless you're ok with snagging a spot up at the bar. Service was just ok - our waiter was a little lackadaisical but the drinks/food came out quickly. For drinks - I ordered the Cruel Summer, which had a nice presentation and tasted fabulous. My friend tried Into The Woods and also really enjoyed it. For food, we split the pork belly sliders as an appetizer, which was a winner. And for my main, I went with the scallops, which were scrumptious! On the other hand, my friend tried the seasonal pumpkin risotto and did not like it - she said the flavors were off so maybe some dishes are hit or miss. Prices are on par for a nice restaurant downtown, so it was a treat for us. But I still hope to return sooner than another 7 years! read more

My friends and I chose Wright & Co as one of our highlight meals on a recent adventure to Detroit. Making reservations ahead of time, we were able to snag a table at 8:45pm on a Saturday. As many reviews have mentioned, the journey finding the restaurant is a bit of a challenge - Wright & Co is located on the second floor of an unassuming building. Luckily, I spotted a sign near the door directing us to the restaurant but even the elevator ride up was a bit confusing, and the other person in the elevator was also confused. Maybe we're just all idiots, who knows. We approached the host stand and were seated immediately, despite being an incomplete party. The atmosphere is dark, hipster and industrial and the servers definitely look the part. I enjoyed how trendy everything appeared to be. We were seated at the far left side of the restaurant at a table by the window; the only thing that's pretty odd about the layout is to be seated with three- to four- person booths facing you to the right. Small space, I get it! Wright & Co has an impressive, exclusive, elitist selection of spirits and I couldn't help but order a Basil Hayden Old Fashioned. It's very similar to every other Old Fashioned I've had; nothing wowed my socks. On to the food! Between the three of us, we decided to try the following dishes: - HOUSE MADE POTATO CHIPS: cheddar cheese sauce, bacon, tomato relish, chives - CRISPY BRUSSELS SPROUTS: sweet chili sauce, rice krispies, thai basil, mint - UDON CARBONARA: egg yolk, guanciale, braised peppercorns, parmesan - GRILLED SEA SCALLOPS: crispy potatoes, candied bacon, compressed apple, mustards Our starters of the potato chips and brussels sprouts were nothing extraordinary; they taste like ordinary dishes you would receive at an ordinary restaurant. Next came the Udon Carbonara - this dish was a step above the first two in that it had a fantastic creamy texture with the fresh udon really making it unique - it's definitely not one of those udon packets from the instant section at an Asian grocery store and you can tell. The savory flavors blended incredibly well. My only critique of this dish is they give you a teeny tiny portion (see my picture!) and that it congealed way too quick. The true star of the show, and hands down absolutely worth returning just for this dish, was the GRILLED SEA SCALLOPS: crispy potatoes, candied bacon, compressed apple, mustards. Oh Em Gee. The description makes the dish sound Mary Jane plain, but it is anything but - the crispy potatoes were perfectly seasoned, tiny, and of a great texture, and the compressed apple absorbed the fantastic sauce and with every bite, exploded in your mouth a bit. All the ingredients and flavors blended together so well and the scallops were cooked perfectly. I could eat this dish all day. For dessert we shared a butterscotch pudding. It was a bit too sweet for my liking and nothing spectacular. I'd pass on this. Overall service was great and not too rushed even though we were nearing the end of the evening. Wright & Co wasn't top of my list on Detroit culinary explorations but sometimes you just have to trust the local. Would definitely come back! read more

Visited wright and co. on a Friday night for their late night menu. The venue itself is nice. Would be a great place to meet up with friends or even to host an event. I chose wright and co specifically for the late night menu online and was disappointed to learn when I arrived that the online menu is different from their actual menu. It had missing items. The bartender apologized and stated that their menu changes weekly but it's hard to update it on the website. I settled on the pork butt sliders which were pretty good, aside from the food I wasn't really impressed with the cocktail menu either. The drink was just okay. Was doing a staycation with the wife and staying at Shinola. Decided to grab some drinks and appetizers at Wright and Co. We sat at the bar and just had an amazing experience. Food wise, the carrots and sweet potatoes were absolutely incredible. However, the main reason our experience was so great was due to the service from the bartender, Matthew. We arrived as they opened, were "greeted" by the hostess with "do you have a reservation?" We did not and only wanted to sit at the bar. She then schooled us on the fact that they take reservations for the bar as well. I asked if it was a problem, she said no and sat us. The bartenders were great, drinks were delicious! The seats were horribly uncomfortable! I don't understand why they give you a coaster with your check when you don't get one with your cocktail! (Not even a beverage napkin!). Our appetizers were good. They definitely need to clean the chandeliers and wipe down the walls! I've not seen a more dusty wall or coated chandelier in a restaurant! Gross! We ordered the potato chips, gnocchi churro, roasted broccolini, and scallops. The dirty martinis tasted like rubbing alcohol and were quite literally the most disgusting I have ever had. The potato chips were good, I will say that! The gnocchi came out and it was cold! We asked if it was supposed to be that way and the manager told us the freezer was "too cold" and that he could not get us another but that we could get something else. So we opted for the turnips. We received the scallops and broccolini next. The scallops were delicious and tasted like butter! However, the broccolini was so crispy that it was charred. We received the turnips and they were disgusting. We did not finish the gnocchi, turnips, or broccoli. If you don't have reservations, you can probably get bar seating. That's what we did. It was an impromptu trip to the auto show and we wanted to get some food post show. Even though this was our first visit, sitting at the bar was great. Our waiter/bartender was Matt. We let him know we were newbies and he walked us through the menu and shared his favorites. What's nice about tapas is, ordering a lot to try! That's absolutely what we did! We ordered the chicken liver mousse, tuna crudo, potato pave, and heirloom tomatoes in addition to a couple of cocktails. The food was on point! The server was awesome too. Everyone was so kind. We were excited to try this place after so many good reviews but ultimately walked away disappointed. The room is beautiful, all kinds of soft lighting and tasteful art on the walls. It's clear that a lot of thought went into decorating the space. Unfortunately we could barely hear ourselves think as they had some kind of nightclub dance music playing for the entire time we were there. I wasn't sure if I was sitting in a restaurant or attending a rave. We were very pleased with our server. She was polite and attentive throughout our stay and took the time to ask if we had any food allergies. The drink menu is extensive and there was something for everyone. I was very pleased that my wife was able to get a custom cocktail when the items on the drink menu didn't quite suit her Unfortunately the food was a mixed experience. To begin with the portions are unacceptably tiny for what we were charged. We ordered a scallop dish that was just under $40, and when they brought it out it was barely 4 or five bites. The pork belly was a similar experience, certainly delicious but barely any of it. Their version of cheesy hashbrowns also left something to be desired. When they brought it out my wife and I both wondered where the cheese was, lol. They only knock out experience was dessert. A wonderful butterscotch pudding with the right kind of texture I suppose I don't understand what is so special about spending almost $200 and potentially still walking away hungry. This place is super vibey. It is industrial but sleek. There's exposed brick and super cool ceilings. We were celebrating my husband's birthday. We were seated in a cool booth. They were legit mocktails with non alcoholic spirits which was nice to see. I had the down in Mexico and desert sun. Both were super balanced and flavorful. I love the use of mezcal. The food we got was mixed. Some plates were great and others were not as good. Pork belly sliders: these were so tasty! The pork belly was crispy, the bun was toasted perfectly, and I loved the heat from the sriracha. The lump crab and lobster toast: it was seasoned well and the bread was toasted nicely. It was not worth $30 for the amount of seafood you received. We had maybe 3 tiny pieces of lobster. Ricotta churro: this was so rich and decadent. There was way too much of it, but I liked the pepper to cut the richness. It needed something else to cut the fat. The leg of lamb: this was disappointing. The lamb was so dry and flavorless. It was super tough to eat. The crunchiness of the barley and pomegranates were nice and I liked the vinegar in the frisée. Cheesey hash browns: there was nothing cheesey about them. I expected it to be gooey and have a strong vinegar taste. It was super dense and did not have cheese in it at all. Overall we had a great experience.
