That was the worst customer service that I ever have experienced before. We went to the cafe around noon, and noticed that a couple who seemed to be the owners with gray short hair old lady had started cleaning up the tables and chairs around 2:30pm which seemed weird cause they are closed at 4:00pm, we enjoyed our coffee and chatting. However, we left half-finished coffee and went to get a pastry. When we returned to our seats, our drinks had already been taken away. When we asked the staff and she said get us new ones then the owner(gray short hair old lady)appeared and told us the coffee was already cold so she had thrown it away. I was speechless due to the extremely rude attitude. Afterwards, they brought us new drinks with a very rude attitude. We were shocked at how unprofessional the staff was at this place. A nice peacefully quaint spot tucked away from all the hustle and bustle. Plenty of tables with seating and even privacy with the sectioned off nooks. A perfect place to sit and dive into your favorite novel while being engulfed by the cozy atmosphere, whilst sipping on their quality coffee and highly recommended baked goods. Perhaps one could argue the prices may be steep, but the way I view it, I would rather pay a dollar more for good quality. Regardless, the service is pleasant with lovely people. It's a very quality spot to catch up on work, lose yourself in a book, or enjoy the flavors they have to offer. This is one of my favorite escapes in Tacoma. read more

I have been here a few times. In my experience the food is good- at least the several sweet pastries I have tried. the service however leaves so much to be desired. The weekend line was extremely long and they only have one register. Why they don't have a tablet they can use for a second line or express pastries only line is beyond me. There were staff standing around waiting for orders to come in through the register which one of the owners was running with no sense of urgency and no acknowledgment of how long we were all waiting. I asked one staff member if the line was typical? She said yeah- on weekends. She didn't bother saying sorry for your wait and or anything to make one feel less annoyed. Their prices are high so perhaps their profit margins are good enough that they don't care that they alienate some customers. I read numerous reviews of people who said the staff were rude and that they won't be going back. I am inclined to avoid this business in the future, except for rare occasions when we have gluten free guests coming and I can go during the week and hope for a short line and dare to dream of service that isn't rude. read more

I am so glad to have a place to meet people or go out with my girlfriend where I can order off the entire menu. The pretzel and hand pies are just incredible. If you want a coffee avoid... all they have is some fancy push button coffee machine... don't even think about ordering a trad. macchiato, you will laugh at what you get, then be confused as to why it is 8 oz. First time trying Wren's Nest Baking Co. and we will be returning! Very tasteful and simple decor with a lot of seating options in the main/other areas inside of the building. There was a decent line at 8 am (when they open) which is always cool to see for a local/small biz! We ordered a lemon poppyseed muffin, ham + rosemary & Asiago quiche, and a few cookies. All things were delicious! We are not GF, but found everything to have great flavor and would order it all again. Grand opening is next Sat (12/9)! Almost don't want to write this review because I don't want to share this amazing secret. An all GF bakery where even my non GF family and friends love every single menu item? Impossible? Nope! I've tried nearly every item they serve and from loaves to quiche to cake and scones they're all truly remarkable, delicious and beautiful. That's just the food. The coffee and the atmosphere with the soaring ceilings and reclaimed barn wood walls makes this a lovely place to enjoy their fantastic bakery. I love walking in the door and having a cheerful greeting. I look at the display of amazing gluten-free and some diary free treats. I come weekly for the seeded molasses bread, and it can be sliced for me. I love taking a cup of wonderfully made coffee and a treat with a friend and finding a place to sit in a cozy corner to chat. The coconut cake is one of my favorite treats. It is so moist, and the icing is so delicious it is beyond description. I take home treats for my family, who can eat gluten. Wow!! My daughter and I had breakfast here this morning and it was delicious! We had quiche, which was really good. The crust was flaky and delicious -- I don't know how they manage this with gluten-free ingredients, but whatever they're doing, it works!! We also had a muffin and some olive oil citrus cake -- again, delicious and the textures were just right. And of course, we had to get some things to go. Wren's Nest seems like a great addition to the community, and I am glad they are here! The service was friendly, the space was beautiful, and many people in line were thrilled to discover that everything (!) they serve is gluten-free. As someone who can eat gluten and didn't know it was a GF bakery going in, though, I probably won't return for the pastries. We ordered the sausage kolache, a beef empanada, a pear cardamom muffin, and a molasses and chocolate crinkle cookie. The flavors in everything were good, and I liked the molasses cookie. However, I felt the kolache, empanada, and muffin were moister and less flaky/had less crumb than a traditional pastry/baked good. Will I recommend this to all my friends who don't eat gluten? Absolutely! Do I hope they do well, and might we stop here occasionally for a cookie on the way to/from Point Defiance? Also yes! But I will focus on offerings where I expect the gluten-free and gluten-containing options to naturally be more similar moving forward and save my pastry cravings for a non-GF bakery. read more

Love being able to walk in and choose from anything they offer since it's all Gluten Free. The staff was very friendly and answered any questions we had about other ingredients. We've tried the Lemon Poppyseed Muffin, Blueberry Muffin, Peanut Butter Cookies, Pound Cake, Soft Pretzel, and the Coffee Cake. All were very generous servings, easy to share. Yes the slice of pound cake cost more than something similar at Starbucks, but we easily split it between 3 of us (it was awesome with raspberry jam too!) I have been to Wren's 5 times now. Every time I went the customer service was great.... until my last visit. Had this been the first time I had been there, I definitely never would go back. I order many items every time I go, never spending less than $50. It's gf so of course it's expensive. I've been up to the roof top twice and it has a beautiful view but you do need assistance to go up since there are apartments that you could access with the elevator. Usually I go on Saturdays but this time we went on a Thursday. It was busy as it always is. This day there was a guy named Hugo working a kiosk for the elevator. This is the first time I've seen this. He was helping a few ladies when I went to ask for the roof top escort. He never acknowledged my friend and I as we stood there waiting for him. He took the ladies up and when he came back down, he still didn't acknowledge my friend and I waiting at the kiosk. There was a girl running food up to the roof top. An older lady with short hair, whom I assume is the owner, scolded the girl for not grabbing forks and napkins, instead of kindly asking her to get some on the tray. Then she wanted her to also grab a broom and dust pan to take up with her, while she was carrying a tray of uncovered food. The girl looked stressed and was trying to figure out what to do in the moment. I could see on her face that she wanted to cry. Why would this lady expect her to take a tray full of food up with also holding a dirty broom and dust pan? Then the lady asks me what I wanted. I let her know we were waiting to get escorted upstairs but that nobody was helping us. She asked if we ordered anything and I said yes. She then asked if I asked for the roof top with my order and I said no because nobody asked us if we wanted that. She then scolded the girl at the register for not asking if we wanted the roof top. Then, Hugo comes and escorted us into the elevator. While he was taking us to the elevator, he saw a couple come to the kiosk so he left the elevator to help them, leaving me and my friend in the elevator. The elevator does not work without a key card, so he left us in a hot elevator to help this other couple but when my friend and I came to the kiosk while he was helping the ladies, he didn't offer us help to take all of us at the same time, instead he ignored us. Then he came with the couple into the elevator and took all of us up to the roof. He told my friend and I that we had to sit at the hot counter in the sun while he sat others in the shaded spots. I don't know why they felt the need to be rude and discourteous to my friend and I. The food is ok but not anything worth getting treated like crap over. I'm a celiac and that is the only reason I will go back as I don't have a lot of options for dining out. As for the food, I have tried a lot of the menu. The coffee cake is alright but not sweet like a coffee cake and doesn't have that cinnamon crumb coat on top. The chocolate tea cake is very heavy and you can only eat a few bites until it's too much on the stomach but it tastes good. The lemon bar was awful and had an aftertaste like how my dog smells when she gets wet. The specialty sourdough was disgusting and has a weird taste to it. The lemon meringue cheesecake is to die for. All of the kolache's are good. The olive oil citrus cake is pretty good but is a little heavy but not as bad as the tea cake. The carrot cake was good but too rich. The pumpkin spice muffin is good but very heavy. I don't care for the hand pies at all as it's mostly greasy soggy dough and very little filling. The beef empanada is pretty good. I'm hoping my next visit will be a lot better and that I can try other things. How it goes will determine if I will return as Viva on proctor is another dedicated gf place for me to get treats. read more

This place appears welcoming but don't be fooled. I had a SUPER disappointing experience this morning at this cafe. I stopped by this place in a bit of a rush to find a good place to sit and take an important work meeting. Because I was behind on time I didn't have time to walk in and order first, but I did choose this location so I could grab a bite and drink and even a treat for my partner after my meeting. I sat outside on the table so I wasn't distrubing anyone by being inside while I was completing my meeting. Within the time I was there (1 hr) I was approached twice by employees who interrupted me rudely indicating I needed to order, both choosing to talk to me WHILE I WAS actively talking during my meeting. This is a walk up to the register, order and then sit if you please kind of cafe vibe, FYI. Also the establishment was not super busy and no one was sitting outside. The first individual (Hugo) was kind enough and once I indicated I could not place an order and was in a meeting he gave me some space. That was enough for me to get the message they we anxious about me ordering if I was going to sit out front the cafe. That was fine, but not a few minutes later another different employee (Cathi) came out and AGAIN actively interrupted me while I was talking and basically said that I had to order and the seating was for guests only. They made me feel incredibly unwelcome, were super rude and pushy. FYI the ourdoor seating does not indicate it is for paying customers only, nor does it say "wait to be seated", etc. After my meeting was over I came inside with the intention to share feedback about my experience, see if they would listen, make it right so I felt good about order something (because as I expressed I choose this location FOR the bites and drinks) but while I was waiting in line with customers ahead of me, Cathi looked at me and very passive aggressively "thanked" me for coming in - with the tone of "finally, you owe us buisness for sitting out front our cafe". It wasn't welcoming but rude. I left at that point. None of my feedback was going to be well received. She thought what she did was acceptable. I am disappointed the employees police the way people can interact and enjoy the cafe and space which is a MASSSIVE damper on the atmosphere and unfortunately will not be going back. Also I am not sure if it is helpful for other or a contributing factor, but I am a visibly queer person and these days can't rule that out as a factor for being treated poorly at establishments. read more

Visiting from San Diego, my daughter and I stopped by Wren's. I didn't even know it was gluten free! My daughter informed me halfway through our meal. The baked goods are spectacular. The crust on the quiche was flaky, buttery, sublime. One of my kid's has celiac so I am familiar with baking gf, AND I still eat gluten. It is not often I stumble on an establishment that has mastered gluten free baking. This lovely kitchen is putting out divine fare so GO!
