As a celiac with extremely limited options, I keep trying this place. I don't know why but every time I go, it's not pleasant. The food is good but the service is really bad. The last time I came here was March 14th. I specifically asked for the lemon meringue cheesecake and she rang it up. The owner was the one that cashed us out. When I got home, there was a different cheesecake in our bag. Given the other allergies our household has, I called to ask what we were given because it's not what we asked for and what ingredients are in it. The girl on the phone said they didn't have lemon meringue and asked what the one we received looked like. After describing it, she said it was goat cheese. I told her that we didn't want it and she said she would issue a refund. I gave her our phone number because she said she could find the transaction like that and said we would get a refund. We never got it. This is really upsetting because I want to be able to come here and have a pleasant experience but it never seems to happen. For what we pay for the items, we should at least be treated well and get the correct items. So far the experiences I got here were: being left and locked in a hot elevator by their service guy, having items heated that were supposed to be cold, having cold perishable items tucked between hot items in the bag, having our food thrown out from our table while we were sitting and eating. I could go on and on. It seems they cherry pick who they want to be nice to. Mind you I'm always friendly to customer service workers so I know I don't deserve this. read more

Their food and coffee really is phenomenal but their service is just poor all around. What's left in the case can sometimes already be promised to a previous customer so it's hard to know what is actually available in real time. There's one line so you might just want a coffee and cookie and get stuck behind a large party who will clean the place out. The rooftop deck is basically VIP access only. You have to pick your seats like buying a plane ticket, given rules and instructions for behavior, and you're led up there and watched like a hawk. Everything is put in to go boxes and plastic which is wasteful. The staff run around in a disorganized and chaotic way. What really hurt is I asked what was in a pastry and was told the wrong answer and it was served cold. So when I asked to return it, I was told no. After speaking to a few other staff, I finally asked for a refund, but they couldn't locate my order or receipt. It was just an all around bizarre experience. read more

I love how everything is gluten free here. The coffee isn't my favorite but their food items are all delicious, I've had the empanadas, the kolaches and a few sweets. They have full flavor and can warm up your item if you'd like. The service is always nice, except for one time we accidentally dropped our empanada on the floor in front of the counter when they gave it to us and the staff just looked and said "oh", but didn't offer to replace it. We were a little annoyed as they are the cheapest and we were hungry. If they had offered to replace it we would have given a 5-star rating. The ambiance is very nice and they have seating areas and for the summer will have a rooftop as well. read more

Went on Saturday at 9am and it was super busy. There was quite a line, but it moved pretty fast. I waited in line for maybe ten minutes and then it took another ten for my order to be ready. Not too bad, and I found a cozy seat by the fire to wait. You cannot beat the ambiance of this place, and the staff were all super friendly. I've been gluten free for around ten years, so I was super excited to hear about a gluten free bakery in my city! I ordered 2 lemon bars, a sourdough loaf, 4 cinnamon rolls, and a zucchini spice muffin. This totaled $68, which I admit I was a little shocked by. Everything tasted good, but I am not the biggest fan of the flour blend they use. It's just not a great texture. I liked the flavor of the zucchini spice muffin, it wasn't too sweet. The lemon bars are awesome, nice and tart. The sourdough was a little gummy, but good. The cinnamon rolls definitely need more cinnamon/sugar filling, in my opinion. They just weren't quite sweet enough. I've found that to be true about some other items I've gotten here on other occasions as well. The cream cheese frosting is a bit savory and tangy. I just wanted more of the gooey, cinnamon filling that makes cinnamon rolls so decadent. Overall, good stuff! Definitely pricey, and the texture and flavor wasn't quite what I wanted. read more

I love the atmosphere here, unfortunately the service leaves much to be desired. I don't ask for much - but common courtesy and respect from servers is sort of a given. We placed our order with a decently unfriendly woman, and then had our teas mostly forgotten about. We said everything was for dine-in, and were given one item plated and heated. When we asked for the other items to be warmed, we were told "it's not our policy and we cannot take it to be warmed" in a snarky tone. Pretty astounded at the way we were treated in general. Left a bitter taste in my mouth. My friend was here from Spain and said "wow" Be better, Wren's Nest. Or work somewhere else if you don't want to be decent and nice to people. read more

the blonde girl at the counter was unfriendly and condescending when i brought my very small senior dog inside due to the heat (he was inside of a completely enclosed travel carrier.) i observed on my way out that the same girl allowed an on-leash french bulldog (no visible service gear) to enter the building and wait in line just as we had tried to, without asking the owner if it was a service animal. i felt discriminated against, and will make sure everyone knows that they pick and choose who they ask "service animal" questions to. as one of the only non-dog-friendly establishments i've come across in my many years living in tacoma, you're really standing out in a bad way. do better! ps. one of your staff (wearing a wren's nest shirt) blocked my car in when i parked around the corner (not in the red no-parking zone, mind you!) they appeared to be male with greasy hair and a bad attitude. they almost backed completely into my car, left me zero space to get out, and then just got out and left for work. eww! read more

I tried the cinnamon rolls after hearing rave reviews and seeing that people line up every Saturday morning. Honestly, mine was gross. The frosting was sour. So sour that I am concerned it was actually spoilt. I thought "people can't be lining up for this" and figured maybe I got a bad/spoilt one somehow. So I tried again. And it wasn't as sour this time, but I still didn't like it. If you like very tart, almost sour, frosting without much sugar to balance it out, these are for you. But it did not suit my palate. I didn't get much sweetness anywhere, didn't get the cinnamon from the roll, and the dough was mushy. Now I've spent almost $30 on cinnamon rolls I did not have more than 3 bites of (and they forgot the vanilla in my vanilla latte). Since everyone else raves about them, I just wanted to share a counterpoint before you spend $$$. read more

That was the worst customer service that I ever have experienced before. We went to the cafe around noon, and noticed that a couple who seemed to be the owners with gray short hair old lady had started cleaning up the tables and chairs around 2:30pm which seemed weird cause they are closed at 4:00pm, we enjoyed our coffee and chatting. However, we left half-finished coffee and went to get a pastry. When we returned to our seats, our drinks had already been taken away. When we asked the staff and she said get us new ones then the owner(gray short hair old lady)appeared and told us the coffee was already cold so she had thrown it away. I was speechless due to the extremely rude attitude. Afterwards, they brought us new drinks with a very rude attitude. We were shocked at how unprofessional the staff was at this place. A nice peacefully quaint spot tucked away from all the hustle and bustle. Plenty of tables with seating and even privacy with the sectioned off nooks. A perfect place to sit and dive into your favorite novel while being engulfed by the cozy atmosphere, whilst sipping on their quality coffee and highly recommended baked goods. Perhaps one could argue the prices may be steep, but the way I view it, I would rather pay a dollar more for good quality. Regardless, the service is pleasant with lovely people. It's a very quality spot to catch up on work, lose yourself in a book, or enjoy the flavors they have to offer. This is one of my favorite escapes in Tacoma. read more

First time trying Wren's Nest Baking Co. and we will be returning! Very tasteful and simple decor with a lot of seating options in the main/other areas inside of the building. There was a decent line at 8 am (when they open) which is always cool to see for a local/small biz! We ordered a lemon poppyseed muffin, ham + rosemary & Asiago quiche, and a few cookies. All things were delicious! We are not GF, but found everything to have great flavor and would order it all again. Grand opening is next Sat (12/9)! I have been here a few times. In my experience the food is good- at least the several sweet pastries I have tried. the service however leaves so much to be desired. The weekend line was extremely long and they only have one register. Why they don't have a tablet they can use for a second line or express pastries only line is beyond me. There were staff standing around waiting for orders to come in through the register which one of the owners was running with no sense of urgency and no acknowledgment of how long we were all waiting. I asked one staff member if the line was typical? She said yeah- on weekends. She didn't bother saying sorry for your wait and or anything to make one feel less annoyed. Their prices are high so perhaps their profit margins are good enough that they don't care that they alienate some customers. I read numerous reviews of people who said the staff were rude and that they won't be going back. I am inclined to avoid this business in the future, except for rare occasions when we have gluten free guests coming and I can go during the week and hope for a short line and dare to dream of service that isn't rude. read more

Almost don't want to write this review because I don't want to share this amazing secret. An all GF bakery where even my non GF family and friends love every single menu item? Impossible? Nope! I've tried nearly every item they serve and from loaves to quiche to cake and scones they're all truly remarkable, delicious and beautiful. That's just the food. The coffee and the atmosphere with the soaring ceilings and reclaimed barn wood walls makes this a lovely place to enjoy their fantastic bakery. The quiche was great and if I didn't know the crust was gluten free, I wouldn't have known. Great flavors all around. We went on a friday morning and it was pretty busy. I love walking in the door and having a cheerful greeting. I look at the display of amazing gluten-free and some diary free treats. I come weekly for the seeded molasses bread, and it can be sliced for me. I love taking a cup of wonderfully made coffee and a treat with a friend and finding a place to sit in a cozy corner to chat. The coconut cake is one of my favorite treats. It is so moist, and the icing is so delicious it is beyond description. I take home treats for my family, who can eat gluten. Wow!! My daughter and I had breakfast here this morning and it was delicious! We had quiche, which was really good. The crust was flaky and delicious -- I don't know how they manage this with gluten-free ingredients, but whatever they're doing, it works!! We also had a muffin and some olive oil citrus cake -- again, delicious and the textures were just right. And of course, we had to get some things to go. Wren's Nest seems like a great addition to the community, and I am glad they are here! The service was friendly, the space was beautiful, and many people in line were thrilled to discover that everything (!) they serve is gluten-free. As someone who can eat gluten and didn't know it was a GF bakery going in, though, I probably won't return for the pastries. We ordered the sausage kolache, a beef empanada, a pear cardamom muffin, and a molasses and chocolate crinkle cookie. The flavors in everything were good, and I liked the molasses cookie. However, I felt the kolache, empanada, and muffin were moister and less flaky/had less crumb than a traditional pastry/baked good. Will I recommend this to all my friends who don't eat gluten? Absolutely! Do I hope they do well, and might we stop here occasionally for a cookie on the way to/from Point Defiance? Also yes! But I will focus on offerings where I expect the gluten-free and gluten-containing options to naturally be more similar moving forward and save my pastry cravings for a non-GF bakery. read more

This place is one of my favorite places hands down! Not everyday you find a place that is all gluten free!! My son can't eat gluten so knowing he can eat anything here is everything! The space is beautiful, busy, and sometimes you get lucky with a spot to sit ;). The workers are very kind and never mind when we order a bunch of goodies at once.
