If you want an out of the way spot to hit on your way through Astoria, this is worth considering. The beer comes out in frosted glasses and the food was fair. The only downside was that there wasn't any fish options on the menu, but that's not a big deal. Try to get a spot next to the fire if you can in the cooler months, you'll appreciate it. read more

Went back there for my second visit and the food was even better than the first time I went last September. I had the bacon cheeseburger with fries and it was one of my favorite burgers EVER!. Delicious & HUGE. All fresh with a great side of homemade fries. This place is really only for locals and bring CASH! There is NOTHING fancy about this place. No microbrews, nothing organic, just simple delicious huge portions of food with a couple of beers on tap or bottle and some delicious strong drinks. This place has a great breakfast buffet and rooms for rent on Air BNB. The bar tender was very surly and joked with us. She was great!! Workers is a transporter to a different time and place. The old, worn and well-loved interior is filled with little curios that harken back to the many years that Astorians have loved this place. It is the kind of place that you might film an episode of Ghost Hunters. Not because it is creepy per se, but because Workers still has a connection to the auras of it's past patrons. Today it's still home to devoted drinkers. Workers is home to a community where you can argue about football, joke about the foils of last night's drunks or carry on a conversation about your life on the mouth of the Columbia. Every time my order gets messed up, food comes at random times to our table instead of all around the same time, can never get service when you need it while the waitress just jabbers at the bar. I recommend going when Andy is working, as his drinks tend to kick ass, and I've only had the prime rib when he was working... It was damn good! Will you find a couple obnoxious locals or fishermen looking to howl at the moon a little? Yeah, but it's not bad, and once you tell one or two to shove off then they're all cool. Not a place I would recommend to eat at or have drinks for that mater. The wife and I went there for the first time on a Friday and it's Prime Rib night, $25, comes with baked potato and a salad...awesome. The wife orders the prime rib and she ask for rare which they say not a problem and I order a crab omelet seeing that they serve breakfast all day, well a good half hour goes buy and not even a salad shows up. Finally the cook brings out our dinner after about 40 min. and so now we get to eat and the wife's prime rib is a dried up old piece of meat that looks like it was left over from the week before and it is not anything close to being rare, her salad is decent looking but it's only lettuce with some shredded carrot and about 4 spicy peppers on it and no tomatoes, the wife does not like spicy anything so I ate the peppers. My omelet is OK but the crab is on the dry side and it taste like canned crab and is just shredded no chunks of leg meat or anything close. It came with a thin pancake of hash browns which were alright and two pieces of English muffins and like the hash browns were both on the greasy side. The wife being so hungry ate the tender portion being there was a little cup of au juice and a horseradish sauce that made it tolerable. After taking a good look at the large portion of the meat that was left and seeing just how bad it was I took the rest up to the counter and showed the owner of the bar just how bad it was and she said well since she ate half I will take half off the price which I agreed to even though my wife didn't even eat half. I think the owner of this place does what ever she can to make a buck like serving old food and pouring weak and over priced drinks. Two thumbs down!!! read more

I never understood someone having a business and not keeping it up. Feels to me they are just taking my money and running out the door with it. A little paint, some new tables and chairs and perhaps a clean mop on the floor would help. This place without a doubt is a dive that is supported by the locals. Felt like the kind of place where regulars meet: some people meet their friends for coffee in the morning, some for drinks in the evening. TV behind the bar, good tunes playing even before the musician started. Dollar bills taped to fan blades above the bar. Pen knives have personalized the bar over the years. What a total bummer. Having a nice relaxing evening when out of no where out comes the manager/owner, who would not identify herself, asking if we requested a fire. When we said the bartender said one was going to be starting soon then we asked for it. We told her what was said and when we asked she totally accused us of not knowing the laws #weknowthelawsloggingfamy #containedfirepit Then she said that it was totally a shit show with the bar tenders and she totally degraded her workers. If I could give it a lower rating I would, the place is owned by a husband and wife (the man doing a lot of the building maintenance and the wife working the business side) that being said the wife will often times be in the bar herself, the drinks are pretty average nothing special, same with the food. What makes the place horrible is the behavior of the woman who runs it, she is very stand offish and quick to make an issue out of nothing. An example of this, and my reason for making the review I witnessed a man make an order and when it was time to pay he kindly extended a hundred dollar bill. This was met with " god I just fucking hate people who pay for their stuff with a hundred dollar bill it's pointless and if you ask me we shouldn't even have to serve them" something about this really rubbed me the wrong way so I immediately left. I feel if you are a business you should be happy to have customers regardless of if they pay with large bills or small change. I don't think they deserve to be successful when they don't have any value for their customers or the way they speak to them. I'm the end, the wife running the show is an out right cunt. read more

So dive bars are cool but this place was just gross. The bartender was the cook so we sat for 15 minutes without a beer. The locals had empty glasses but did not care looks like they had good conversation which is better than alcohol sometimes. I have eaten roadkill and Tijuana tacos but I don't think I would eat here. Like traveling but tired of being a "tourist"? If you don't mind cheap beer and a slightly seedy atmosphere then shed your inhibitions and step into Mary Todd's. Mary herself is a real character as are her patrons and she knows how to cook. The prime rib dinner is as good as any your likely to get on the Oregon coast and certainly better than the surroundings would suggest. I'm aware that Astoria currently has several more "upscale" restaurants and am unimpressed.I live in Portland, I can get generic "upscale" food every six blocks or so. Mary's iceberg lettuce salad is better than most in that the lettuce is freshly torn and crisp, the garnishes are fresh and she puts pickled pepperoncini on it. The prime rib is remarkably tender and moist. It is also obscenely large. In short, the food here all displays the grace of love. Do yourself a favor and split it with your significant other. I ignored my own wife's suggestion that we share an entree, and have yet to live it down. Why doesn't it get five stars? Because five stars is for places that make their own salad dressing. read more

MARY TODD'S IS NOT A TOURIST BAR. If you are a tourist and do not have thick skin keep moving. Go downtown. There are plenty of pleasant establishments there. If you are fascinated by culture's that are not of your own you may enjoy this place. Or if you like train wrecks. Or if you like booze. But not if you like beer. There are 2 draft beer choices: Crap and Crap Light. There are plenty of tables and no table service. When you go to the bar to order you will be passed over for locals who walked in after you and locals who need refills. You may also have to wait while the bartender tells a friend why her, uh, partner is back in County Jail. This is a test. If you can tolerate the initial neglect you are on your way to being accepted and even embraced. This does not mean you have to be pushed around. If you don't like the way you are being treated don't tip. No one else does. Don't whine about the beer selection, or the cash only policy, or the rants that are loud enough to be heard in Ilwaco. If you feel like staying for a second drink you are not a total snob. Patrons are loud, drunk, half witted, and un-inhibited. You will hear everything everyone has to say about everything in the entire fucking bar. You may realize that you are welcome to contribute to the conversation. So it is very social and that is good and unique. The food is actually really good. They have a big kitchen and take pride in serving quality comfort food. Special pricing for tourist: Tourist pay more for drinks than locals. 2 TVs that sit so passively you may not even notice them showing NASCAR qualifying even during football season. This place is great! Stopped by last night to enjoy a drink and a smoke. There is a firepit and chairs out back and it feels like home. Mary (the owner) was out there roasting hot dogs for her granddaughter and chatting with patrons. Everyone here seems to know everyone else so it's very local. Don't let that scare you away! Everyone is super friendly! Don't expect to get your ass kissed here as that's not how this place works. Don't be shy, go to the bar and ask for menus and drinks! The pours are generous and the food is fantastic! This is a meat and potatoes place so prepare to get stuffed! Came back tonight for dinner and meat bingo. Yes, meat bingo. LOL! Classic dive bar and they make no excuses for it. Stiff drinks abound, nothing with more than three ingredients, so leave your foo-foo drink orders at the curb. You'll definitely run into some interesting characters, local and tourist alike. Oh, and beware the Yucca. Ice, crap load of Vodka, and some lime mix into a drinking jar. Wrap in a moist towel, shake 'till your arm practically falls off or towel is stuck to jar and feels ice cold and frothy - drink. I am completely floored that this place has any good reviews. We recently went to this bar on a Friday night and were 2 of about 9 people, the others being questionably 21 year olds and mid-50s. A very strange and decidedly unfriendly atmosphere. The sole bartender was disinterested in us all night until the cash came out to pay the tab, he sprinted over like an Olympian. Speaking of cash, when asked if the take credit cards, I didn't get a 'polite' no, but rather a grunt and pointing to the ATM. I can't believe this place serves food. It looks absolutely filthy. I enjoy a good dive bar, but this was awful. In Astoria you can do much better than here for both service and quality of beverage. My only thought is that there must have been a recent ownership change or serious turnover of staff because I simply cannot believe these positive reviews from what I experienced. read more
