This True Value store is a nice little, local location for home improvement needs. I have stopped by a few times since moving into the area and have had the need to fix some things in the new place. Customer service is pretty nice and they will help you find whatever you need in the store. There is a great selection of nuts and bolts as well as outlet covers. You can probably guess what I was fixing around the house :) Parking is decent and they have remodeled the outside with a great paint job. If you are looking for home improvement needs within the neighborhood then you should check out this True Value location. They are helpful and have lots of items to help you on your DIY journey. read more

Workbench True Value is really nice to have in the neighborhood. My family and friends find it really nice to stay in the community and fulfill our hardware needs there. They are a nice little corner store that stocks quite a bit. I am always impressed with what the stock and find it available when I need it. read more

This little store is tucked away in the middle of the neighborhood but it is well stocked and the staff is so friendly and helpful. They had the shade of paint I needed which was an obscure color, and I'd much rather shop here than at the big box orange store. I really hope the neighbors shop here too. We need more places like this. read more

Been coming here since 1997. While there were some good workers in the past, the new ones they have are terrible. I don't know why there is such a big turnover here. One man in his thirties, new to me, was very rude and condescending. He removed 10% off a lock I was returning the day after we bought it because it was missing a screw. I went home to find the screw and when I brought it back, he did not offer to give me back a full refund. I told him I did not appreciate his insinuation that I was trying to hustle him. I also told him we have been shopping here since 1997, a long time and this is how he treats long time customers. I prefer to shop at Pete's anyway. I liked Jim and I don't know why he's not there anymore. I also liked Patty, but she hasn't been there for years. read more

I have been a long-time customer here. I'd say 90% of my hardware needs I have been able to get here without having to go to a big box place. The staff knows me and it feels like a community place. I miss the pre-Covid crew that worked there and I'm getting to know the new staff. The staff is knowledgeable and they are helpful. Even though I know my way around they will walk me to the spot. The owners seem to be investing in the location such as a new roof and new paint and I am thankful that Covid didn't take this business as a casualty. read more

If your a person of color and want to feel small, visit this spot. I (latino) Walked into the store (Castro Valley) and found what I needed, then i stood there thinking about my project( ratchet set in hand) when Mark came up to me... literally up to me, like 2 ft from me... so much for social distancing. He asked if I need help, I said "no just thinking about what I need, thank you" he says ok. He's blocking the aisle so I step towards him, he hesitates then steps aside... again no social distancing. I walk up 2 aisles just looking about and notice that Mark is still behind me....I do a quick about face and thrust my items at him and say " here hold my items so that you don't think going to f*cking steal them" to which he replies "oh good" and takes my items... I continue to walk up another aisle and catch him creeping around corners trying to watch me.... F*ck I think... I need the tools for a job and pay for my stuff and bounce. Shameful F##k you Mark, you shouldn't judge people. read more

Lady at the counter today had her mask around her neck. At no point did she put it on. She was an older (50+ year old). She was nice, but was not complying to state regulations or public safety. I will not return if this is the norm. read more

This is a great locally owned hardware store. All of the employees I have had dealings with have been really nice and very knowledgeable. The owner has even special ordered items that they don't regularly carry! I shop pricing and they always have been priced more than fairly. If you want to keep your dollars local and get great customer service you really need to shop here! read more

This was my go-to hardware store until today. I purchased a tool yesterday with a few other items just to get home and discover the tool didn't work for the job I needed it for. I tried to return it to the store today only to be accused of trying to "rent" the tool I was trying to return. First, this definitely isn't the first tool I've bought here. It just so happened to be the first time I've tried to return anything to this store, accusing me of trying to "rent" their tools seems a little farfetched to me. Second, every time I come here, I definitely get the feeling that I'm being followed around the store so the other reviews about this place are very accurate. In a world where customer service is king, these guys are lacking, especially during a time where mom and pop shops like this are closing left and right. I will happily go out of my way to go to another hardware store from now on, or even shop on Amazon. read more

Great find here in our community. I needed to get a bunch of different light bulbs, and this young looking employee was very helpful and friendly. They are very close to the house, so, unlike other things, I don't have 20 min+ drive ..... For example, if I want some upscale food. Been coming here for a while. I had a high-stress problem - locked myself out of my outbuilding with a padlock, leaving the key inside. I called Pete's on the Blvd - nope. I called 24 Hour Fitness - they definitely have a set, but would not lend them due to liability reasons. Getting desperate, I called this hidden little hardware store. The folks were so friendly - Sandy answered the phone and she and another worker were waiting with open arms for my arrival to borrow a set. No problem. They were stressing safety and thankfully my wonderful neighbor, Roy, took the time to use the cutters on the lock. All done now! Love this store. I will use them for my hardware needs for sure. read more

I love this store precisely because it is small. It always has what I need and someone to help me find it. I can get in and out in a hurry (and thankfully there are no automatic check out counters). I also like that not everything is pre packaged and I am able to buy just a few, rather than a whole box, of what I need. They do not stock growing plants, but then again this is not a nursery! read more

In and out in less than 5 minutes! I came here to get a copy of a key made (Rite-Aid doesn't open their key department on Sunday's). Walking in, one of the employees was ready to assist me with my needs. He swiftly took the key, made a copy, and rang me up on the register. For $2.06 (including tax), I had what I needed and was on my way! read more

This store is on the smaller side but they seem to have everything under the sun! Sure the prices are a little higher than chains but the "true value" is their deep knowledge and willingness to help solve your issues MUCH unlike nearly all chains where the staff lacks both of these qualities in abundance. I've been to this store almost 10 times in less than a year (since we moved to Castro Valley) and always walked out happy even when I didn't buy anything. Like today, when they couldn't help me with a gas connector valve I needed (because their 90-yr old plumber on staff left for the day) I was referred to their only competitor in town (Pete's Ace Hardware) and was even told who to talk to at that store. I love going to this store. It may be a small hardware store hidden in a neighborhood, but mighty in terms of the customer service I receive. The best customer service EVER! I don't need to get lost in a big hardware store like Home Depot or Lowes, and chase down a customer service representative to ask a question. I don't know the name of a person who always helps me when I go here, but he always welcomes me to the store and helps me with things I am looking for. Great little hardware store. The staff is always pleasant. Several are very knowledgeable, some not. But that's to be expected. One time I came in with a stove burner with screw head broken off. The gentleman who helped me took it in the back, drilled out the old screw and re-tapped it for a size larger. He took is time to do a good job & only charged $10. I gave him $20. Prices are a little higher than the discount chains, but inline with small stores. It's not as clean & neat as Home Depot or Pete's, but it's a fun place to browse around and very convenient for me. read more
