Last Friday was my 2nd time wandering into this store, and I was on a mission to buy a pair of Birkenstock. Walking in on a Friday afternoon, it was not busy at all. After talking to Katherine at the register for a lil bit, she showed me the selection they had, and it was an impressive variety! They had a bunch of different designs, but I had already been eyeing the black 2 strapped pair online prior, so that was what I went for. Katherine was very knowledgeable about Birkenstock and their different styles and fits. She even showed me her own pair and explained it take about 10-15 miles of wearing your new Birks to wear them in. And yes Birks are definitely not comfy at all when you first buy them! Lol, I noticed that a lot of people say that they don't get noticed ... lol, I am from New York, so I spoke up, as in wave and speak loudly: "I need help finding this shoe", or say "excuse me" and ask my question. I think their attitude is a lovely example of the Seattle freeze. In other hand they may think I was rude or "in their face" ... but I don't care, I get the service I ask, no more no less. I noticed though that there are only 2 ladies typically, and the one that helps you must check you out = commission bonus = awkward silence moments between them as they may not want to be rude to each other (also very Seattle) so they wait until the customer approaches one of them. Lol. I like the store, they only carry quality brands hence the prices are from fair to expensive. But so far, they always carry what I want or need. read more

The shoes here really are made well and fit my feet much better than anything I order on Zappos. Recently I used my Chinook Book coupon + there was amazing shoes on the sale racks and I got a pair of 140 shoes for 77 dollars. They have a good selection of men's and women's shoes and smart wool socks. These shoes aren't super sexy but they are incredibly functional and stylish enough for the long cold winter. Most shoes are water resistant, if not water proof. I get great compliments on my shoes from this store and sometimes walk out of my way to avoid looking in the WAY TOO TEMPTING window display. read more

Walked by Woolly Mammoth a gazillion times since my UW college days, but finally stopped in on 5/7/15 with the kiddo. The store staff was immediately receptive and greeted us upon entering. We were strategic shoppers on the Ave that evening: UBookstore, U:Don and Woolly Mammoth. Kiddo was fitted with Birkenstocks (Arizona Black Oil) for his birthday. Hands down much more comfy than Tevas, Crocs, and Uggs and you can't beat the quality since 1774. I forgot my Chinook coupon specific to this store, but the sales person gave me a 15% discount anyways which was very kind. She also gave me additional information to have my other well-worn birkies evaluated for possible repair at another local business in nearby Wallingford. I've been buying footwear at Wolly Mammoth for half a decade now and I feel a review is due. I am a professional woman in her early 30s. I shop at Nordstrom / Neiman Marcus, where I spend a lot more on and return more of shoes, but at Wolly Mammoth it's been a 100% success rate. I even found a pair of cute officewear 2.5 " heels that I could wear all day!!! What is most impressive to me about this shop is that they seem to have a seemingly limited collection, but are somehow ( by magic?) able to find better matches for me than from any big store. I don't have foot or orthopedic issues (touch wood) but love being comfortable. I am okay scarificing some style for comfort, but not too much. Somehow, everytime I've been here, the folks have helped me buy a shoe I end up loving and using. I think people in this shop are far more competent than an average shoe store and really know their stuff. In summary, don't be intimidated by their "comfort shoe" atmosphere. They are very very good with helping you find what specifically works for you (whether or not you have foot problems). You don't have to shop by catalogue. You won't find Ferragamo-level style here, but you will find slightly less stylish, far more comfy footwear. To me, that's a great trade-off. read more

Great experience here! I wanted to give it some time before I posted this, just to make sure that the boots were still working out. About a month and a half ago, I walked into the store to buy fall/winter boots. The salesperson was not so chatty when I initially walked in, but when I told them exactly what I wanted, they were incredibly candid about boots to go with. I especially appreciated that the salesperson did not use that an opportunity to sell me the most expensive pair of shoes - quite the contrary, the price was extremely reasonable. Cut to the snowpocalypse that has engulfed Seattle. Almost 5 inches of snow where I live and I have to trudge through it to get home in my new-ish boots. I may not have been a happy camper with the hike, BUT the boots have held up beautifully. I am incredibly satisfied with this experience and will certainly be going back to the shop for summer shoes! read more

This store has a great selection, however the sales ladies are rude and judgemental. I look young, and thus to them I must be a student not interested in purchasing a pair of nice shoes. They never greet me or ask if I need any help. I've been in here a handful of times with plans on purchasing but after 10 minutes of browsing and waiting on them to notice that I'm holding a shoe and need help, I'm consistently given the cold shoulder. Please tell me, why on Earth would you open a store in the U District if you don't actually plan on catering to the audience who frequent there?! I've always had great experiences shopping here for shoes. The employees understand fit, and can help make sure that your shoes are actually going to work for you feet. They do participate in the Chinook Book, make sure to use that coupon! The selection of shoes varies, and now that their sister store (a few doors down) has closed, I think they are going to have a bit more variety. I came into Woolly Mammoth, browsed some styles, and was asked if I needed help. I told the salesperson what I wanted in a shoe size, where and when I planned to use the shoes, and she found me some great shoes that my feet, if they had mouths, would aaah sliding into, and best of all, the shoes were within my budget!. After one pair of shoes contributed to a fractured toe and ten weeks of pain, I am cranky and codgerly enough that a quality shoe shopping experience such as the one I had at Woolly Mammoth must come to the attention of you fine, quality-obsessed Yelpites. I've heard the shoes they sell here are very comfortable and high-quality, but man, the style for most of the shoes are so blah. These are shoes your dentist would wear, and I don't mean the cool dentist you have a crush on because they're young and hip, I mean the stodgy kind of dentist that only has trade magazines in the lobby and elevator music piped through the office. I had a problem with a defective Keen shoe I bought there which developed an annoying squeak a few weeks after purchasing it. When I brought the shoes back to the store and showed them what was wrong, they quickly replaced them free of charge. So if you asked me last week when I made a purchase for two expensive sandals how my experience went, I would have said it was a 5 star rating. They were super nice and when I told them I wasn't sure about the sandals because my feet typically swells later in the day and I was afraid that it may be a little narrow, they reassured me of their return policy that I could try it out at home and bring it back within 30 days. They said they would rather see happy returning customers than people suffer with expensive shoes they can't wear. I did just that and when I came back to return, I got the coldest service. She gave me my refund receipt but she didn't staple or return my original receipt. When I asked for my original receipt she said, "This is mine. What if you drop the receipt outside? someone could run in here to steal the same pair and try to return it." Uhh what? Who would do that? And other places just mark on the original receipts that you've returned the shoes because they say the original receipt is yours. I don't appreciate the judgment lady and you should really stop telling people that you encourage them to try shoes at home and they are welcome to return it if it doesn't work out if you will plan to give them attitude afterwards. Other than that, this is a place with a huge selection of shoes and it would be a great place if you know exactly what shoes you want and there is no possibility that you would return anything. read more

Great friendly service. I didn't buy anything because they didn't have my size in the shoe I wanted, but they were incredibly pleasant and gracious. This is after we came from another shoe store (Five Doors Up, I've heard it is owned by the same person who owns Woolly, and the people at Five Doors were just too cool to be helpful) where we got no service or assistance. This is a cute little shoe store that is kiddy-corner to the post-office. WIth that being said, it looks like a hole in the wall, and it kind of is... but they have a really good set up that includes a huge sales rack. They aren't the type of shoes that you'll find a few doors down at "5 doors up", but more of the simple, earth, dansko, etc variety. Always support your arches! And if you look at the selection and find you aren't a fan of the shoes (really, just try a pair on, they look better on your feet) here, they sell really cool insoles that you can put in your favourite pair, cut em up and if those don't work, the company that makes them allows refunds up to 30 days (or something similar to that)... even after you destroy them! read more

One of the best retail experiences I've ever had. I was greeted right away by a sales staff, and after answering my questions and getting me the shoes I wanted she gave me some time alone to try the shoes on and decide on the pair that I wanted. This was nice cause I didn't feel any pressure at all to buy something, which most small stores do when they hang around you all the time. Of course the prices don't beat Amazon but they offer a student discount and prices are quite reasonable for high-end shoes! I'll definitely be back once summer rolls around read more

When I walked in, I wasn't greeted at all and had to go out of my way to get the ladies attention to try on a pair of blundstones. There was nobody else in the shop even so seemed lame that they didn't say anything to me. So I ask to try on the blundstones. I then ask if they carry the ones with fur lining. Instead of just saying they don't, both women began to lecture me about how it "doesn't get cold enough here in Seattle for the fur, you don't need them, just wear wool socks with these ones, etc" which irritated me. I didn't ask for an opinion on them, just wanted to know if they ever carry them. I go to Alaska all the time for work so don't tell me about how warm I need my shoes. I also like the look of them, I think it's a nice aesthetic for the boot. Anyways, yeah they are knowledgeable about arch support and stuff but they're really kinda rude and that lecturing really irked me. Bad customer service for the most part. read more

I called and asked if they had a specific brand, style, size and color - and back up color, she said she did. I drove in from Snohomish county that afternoon. There were no other customers in the store, but the staff were busy talking to each other and didn't greet me as I looked for the shoes. I finally asked for them and the sales lady gestured and said they were all "over there". I asked for the brand/style/size/color and the salesman went to the back to retrieve them. They didn't have what I had asked for they had brand/color or style/size - but not in either of the combinations I had called about. I told them I called and was told they had them in stock, the woman said that I didn't talk to her. No apology, no service. I needed the shoes so I got a similar pair. You got my money today, but I won't return in the future. I should have ordered from Zappos. read more

They pack a lot of styles into a small space, which means there is a good variery of very comfortable shoes (for those with foot problems or who work long hours on their feet) and comfy cute shoes (for those who want style they can walk to the bus in). The staff is very knowledgeable on shoe fit, material and care. They can help you pick the right leather dressing or find a shoe to fit your orthotic, whatever you need. If they dont have what you need they may be able to suggest something that will work. I was looking forward to visiting this store for months and I have to say I was really disappointed with the level of service I received. They have a really great selection of shoes, some really cute stuff, and the prices are reasonable for the quality of shoe that you're purchasing. I walked in and was greeted by an employee, and I told her I needed a comfortable shoe for everyday wear. Then she walked to a rack of Danskos and said, "Ok so we have these ones and these," then kind of just stared at me like that was the end of the conversation. No question about my foot shape, foot pain, nothing specific about my needs other than waterproof and heel vs no heel. It ended up being the same experience that I would have had on Amazon, me just guessing at shoes and trying them on by myself. I saw another customer getting a lot more attention and help, so maybe this employee was just having a bad day? It was super disappointing, I was expecting so much more expertise and advice. I ended up buying an expensive pair of shoes that I'm hoping will work for me. As I was checking out I saw a whole display of inserts behind the register - maybe one of those would have worked for me, but the sales person never even mentioned them. I don't know if I'll be back, except to return the shoes I bought if they turn out not to work. When I'm bored in the U-District I tend to wander in here and the sister business up the street at Five Doors Up. The prices are high but it is a shoe boutique. When something is on sale it goes from $200 to $150 so that is still pricey. If there's 2 people working at a time they like to socialize with each other more than ask customers what they need.
