I've been coming to Woodward CrossFit for just over six months now, and I absolutely love it. The facilities are great, the coaching staff is wonderful, and the community is better than I ever thought.
My Emotional Response to Woodward CrossFit: I can't fully express how lucky I am to be at WC. When I started I had no idea what CrossFit was - I just wanted to lose weight and build muscle and they had good ratings so I thought I'd check it out. I've made amazing progress in the past half year - dropping some weight, building a lot of muscle, improving my form, and feeling a lot better about myself. When I started I thought this would never work for me - I'd be fat and non-athletic forever. I have a long way to go to be truly fit, but Woodward CrossFit has helped me change my life in regards to "working out" and being healthy.
About The OG (Original location on Quitman): Yes, it's in the middle of the sketchiest bunch of metal sided buildings I've ever seen. Don't let that discourage you. It's an amazing box (gym). There are showers, a kid's room, and plenty of indoor and outdoor space for the WODs.
About WW2 (2nd location on Anderson Mill): Yes, it's in a tiny strip mall next to a quilting store and a dollar store. Don't let that discourage you. It's also an amazing box. It's a more intimate setting and doesn't have some of the features of The OG, but I love it. (Big shout-outs to Jaz and Justin!)
For CrossFitters: All the coaches know their stuff and will make you focus on both form and intensity. They know what they're doing here. The OG is huge for a box! WW2 is smaller, and is currently in the process of getting more equipment. If you want bigger and open air, try the OG. If you want something currently a little smaller, come over to WW2.
For Non-CrossFitters: CrossFit is kind of trendy right now. But Woodward is not an "overnight" place that popped up because CrossFit got cool all of a sudden. You will get proper coaching at either of the locations. They'll make sure that your form is good so that you don't hurt yourself and they'll help you set and meet your goals.
Do not be put off by the word "class" here - this isn't a 30+ person class where you're not going to know what you're doing and will be ignored. Classes are smaller than that and you'll get attention.
For Non- or Former Athletic People: I'll cut to the chase - I'm a heavy/chubby/fat/overweight lady who hasn't been athletic since high school. When I first drove by The OG and saw people flipping tires and climbing ropes I kept right on driving. "Not a chance." I said. But I went back and talked to them and changed my mind about doing CrossFit. It sounds cliché, but anyone can do this. CrossFit is scalable, which means that you don't have to be hardcore and lift 100 pounds your first day. I expected all the attractive, fit people who go to Woodward to be like the mean kids in gym class who picked me last for everything. It is the exact opposite. It's a competitive environment, but you're really only competing with yourself. (And if you're fat like me, it's the most judgement-free place I've ever experienced. For real.)
For Parents: The OG has a good sized kid's room. It's not an "official" daycare with teachers and programming and stuff like that, but it's somewhere where your kids can sit and read or watch tv or play with the toys. I don't have kids, but I am so impressed that Matt had decided to include a kid's room.
For Women: I can't speak for all women, but I was kind of scared to come to a gym when I started here. I worried that going to a gym would be just another experience in competing with dudes for space and with the other ladies to look good. I was totally wrong and I realized that the minute I walked in. Yeah, there are a lot of big, muscular dudes. There are also a lot of big, muscular ladies. And it's awesome. I didn't know this coming in, but CrossFit culture is extremely gender inclusive. You are not going to be thought less of here (in CrossFit or at Woodward) because you're a woman.
Quick story: on that day that I decided to walk into The OG with my husband and check out "that scary looking gym" we were shown around the gym by Coach Mike. He was tall and fit and struck me as a pretty typical "fit guy." I kind of expected him to talk mostly to my husband and for him to sell the place to him, not me. I was dead wrong. Mike actually looked me in the eye when he talked to me and equally divided his attention between the two of us. He also didn't bat an eye when I said I didn't want to get "toned," but wanted to build muscle instead. That was new for me. It meant a lot to me to be taken just as seriously in an athletic setting as my husband was. But that's how it is at Woodward CrossFit.
And, if this is something that appeals to you, The OG has ladies-only classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I've never been to them, but I hear it's a popular class!
To Sum Up: I can't recommend it enough! read more
