If you were passing through town and felt like a coffee and a home made cake (get the passionfruit vanilla slice if available) then the sunny paved brick courtyard out back or patio out front under umbrellas is a beautiful setting. Inside is filled with large wooden clocks, plates, candles, silver ornaments, cushions and the usual candidates that occupy a country gift shop. The lunch menu is fairly limited and for $35 for a pie and salad and a tomato bruschetta I felt it was a tad expensive. Tomato bruschetta literally was 2 pieces of bread with a pile of tomato and some shavings of basil and the curry pie, although lovely, came with a very simple lettuce and tomato salad. Coffee and tea was lovely though and I'd love to see more afternoon teas here to really twee up the Avalon Downton Abbey experience. With a little tweaking of the formula and simplifying the lunch menu to high teas, with more of their home made cakes, scones and desserts this place can really ham up the out of town experience for us city folk in an enjoyable way.

"An Adelaide Hills French Style Cafe"…read more This Cafe located at the rear, of block 54 Onkaparinga Valley Rd, Woodside, Main Street. This French Style Cafe is far more than a coffee, cake stop, we have returned here on number of occasions as a special treat. Apart from the fact that they serve excellent coffee, accompanied with mouth watering cakes, with a good kitchen and chef. As you dine inside or alfresco, your eyes will feast on, antique French style furniture (painted), many and various old and unusual objects. All for sale at very reasonable prices. Thus creating a very relaxing ambience, as you wander about viewing so many interesting items. This venue would be an ideal place for a wedding, and I understand larger group bookings are essential.

A few different rooms and you will find the café part in the middle room. What I really love about this place is all the little hidden room dining areas. There are range of take away options for lunch or dinner for the family. Some super tasty looking stews, pasta and salads. Wow! All decently priced and a great healthy alternative then going out for takeaway. I look forward to return to eat some lunch. On this visit my guest and I tried the Lemon Polenta and the Pecan cake. Both were very moist, full of flavour, and not too sweet. Which is perfect by my books. The coffee is a strong and robust. Lovely blend and great barista. You couldn't have asked for anything better on a cold rainy day! I think I might become a regular as a resident of the Hills! I am looking forward to warming up near their open fireplace.

As is often the case, I'm glad I was wrong. Little did I know a quirky little cafe is the perfect replacement for a redundant service station! So far I've only had coffee, but based on the experience of our group the overall customer experience is great! Our coffees (and one iced chocolate) came out really promptly and were top notch (and very affordable somehow). We opted to sit out the back, a great choice for a bright, warm hills Autumn morning. It feels like being out the back of my Nanna's house (retro table and all) only no one is yelling at me through the back window about the football scores.. which is good I guess, for a cafe anyway.

For my liking, they do a ripper brekky, the service is friendly and the atmosphere is typical of this end of the hills - easygoing, but with just a splash of 'nose-in-the-air', which I find very amusing. Before we first went (2nd day they were open) we had heard they were trying to push the kid friendly vibe. Although they seem to cater for the young mum audience, according to reports I've heard come from the owners, the young mum crowd stopping in for a coffee once or twice a week doesn't pay the bills, so they are trying to expand their clientel to include people who will buy cocktails and spend money! Fair enough too. I hope this place has legs and is around for a while; The old indian restaurant in this spot seemed to thrive for years, whereas other restaurant spots in the same area of Stirling have a very hard time, turning over every couple of years. Seems like you're doing the right thing at the moment Patchies, keep it up! And to any of you curious about somewhere to go in the hills for a bite, with or without kids, get into patch. Well worth a look!

The owner/head chef does catering too and although i couldn't be there she catered one of my good friend's weddings this January just gone and by all reports the food was amazing. It's nestled in on the corner of a well designed hills complex next to a newsagents, a great local butcher, a chemist, and a foodland supermarket. Super convenient for the locals. Not to mention it's tucked behind the Balhannah pub and bottle shop so you can always grab a cheeky drop of plonk if you're heading home to unwind after a day out with the younguns! Owner and head chef, Nicole is an absolute delight who brings a real passion for food and hills produce to the small town of Balhannah. The menu hasn't changed drastically for about the past four years but there's a good reason for that- it's all delicious and there's something on there for whatever mood you're in! There are also always specials up on the board and I believe the dinner menu does have a little variation from week to week. The other great thing is the all day breakfast because going out for breakfast is one of those great pleasures that we don't always want to wake up early for! My top picks would have to include the club sandwich- a classic, the lamb wrap, the chicken tandoori wrap and the chips. I don't know how but these girls have the ability to make basic food so delicious. Curries, salads and an array of delicious foods feature regularly on the specials boards. There's always a delicious range of cakes and treats in the fridge- all made on site and all of which match fantastically with their amazing hot chocolates (with real chocolate!) The menu features gluten free and child friendly options while there's also a small kids play area inside as well. If you're driving through on a weekend in the hills, I would highly recommend stopping in for a local wine and some tasty treats- there's a delectable tasting plate on the menu- perfect for visitors to the region!

It's a very tasty dish with all the flavors intertwined without being overpowering and with just the right mix. The roasted butternut squash was also great with macadamia nuts and miso mayo. I'm not a big fan of butternut squash, but I thought it was delicious. One thing I really like about this place is that they have a beautiful garden. The Topiary is located Newman's Nursery, and is a picturesque setting from what we could see in the dark. Keep an eye out while driving down Northeast Road at night so that you don't miss the driveway as the lighting on that road is pretty dim. Once inside, there is ample parking, and you'll likely be greeted on the way up to the restaurant by a friendly, vocal cat that hangs around. We enjoyed an excellent six course meal, each meal being made from locally sourced or foraged ingredients and paired with a different wine. One of the standouts for me was the sou-vide egg with pork belly and forest mushrooms. At the end, the chef introduced himself and talked about the final dessert item, garnishing it with a sprinkle of carrot seeds from the garden. It was a nice touch, and we were all very appreciative of the hard work and attention to detail that went into the food. This was a really good night! The food was excellent and the staff were welcoming and attentive, but not needy. The building has a real rustic charm to it, and my only regret was that we couldn't go out to see the outdoors as it was dark and freezing. I'm looking forward to coming here for breakfast or lunch some time and see the place during daylight hours.

I think this is a really great thing for Aldgate. Kind of stepping up and showing the Community it is ok to change your image. I hope that a lot of the neighbouring businesses take note. For too long has the Adelaide Hills been old and outdated. Over the last 5 years we have seen some impressive changes. This is one of them. The décor inside is really well planned. All the colours work together, green being their spark of colour. And certain little touches of green are really clever. For example, I brought my dogs along to the café and I was handed two green bones on a plate for them to enjoy! How sweet is that? Do you know any other cafes that offer your pups a treat? Not many that is for sure! The menu is simple, but well thought out. I ordered the DIY Brekkie, which you have poached eggs and toast as the base and you can add other items. I decided on haloumi and avocado. Eggs were cooked prefect. But only one slice of bread? It was quite a costly meal of over $20, so I thought I would get two slices at least. Oh well... My partner tried the truffle scrambled eggs. Which I thought was much better value. So much flavour and cooked really well. Fluffy and not overdone! I am glad to see this café in Aldgate. I am sure the Community will love it. As for myself, I will try a few more items on the menu.

Our reserved table was waiting for us upstairs. We were all enjoying the warmth from both the heaters and the interior fitout as we walked through. Green and wood is used throughout the space. A very lovely fitout indeed. First shock would be the pricing of the food dishes. I don't mind paying for quality, however, I think it is a tad outrageous to charge customers $12 for two eggs on toast or $23 for smashed avocado which came with two eggs. Getting over the initial shock, we queued up to order. It was the longest wait for the amount of people in the line. Not sure why the staff taking the orders was so slow. It became apparent that a second staff was needed. Food came intermittently, which is understandable as we didn't order together. Having said that, one of the ladies who ordered first had to wait till everyone received their food before hers came. Hangry would aptly described her emotions. The food was delicious! I had the croque monsieur. Never heard of it before, I took a gamble and was pleasantly surprised. Other dishes included a little of a lot, smashed avocado, mushrooms on toast and the Frederick special. Really glad we stopped here for brunch. It is definitely popular. I still maintain that it is overpriced for what we received though. Worth checking out, but bring a big wallet!

They have a very cute outside garden, with a fountain and surrounded by lots of trees and flowers so on a sunny day it's probably the best place you can find in Birdwood for lunch. They have a fairly simple set-up; a small open kitchen and a few tables inside and then a few more tables outside. My first visit was on my brother's wedding day when the three of us bro's went out for breakfast beforehand. The breakfast wasn't huge or elaborate but was well cooked and the coffee was fantastic. I've been back for coffee and cake and the quality is still high. They sell all sorts of jams and spreads made locally in the hills and have a rack of plants out the front for purchase. I also read that they have a barter system there; so when we visited they were asking for lemons and were offering food or coffee in exchange. I like that initiative. If you live in the hills and have driven past on your way to somewhere else and thought "is that place any good?", the answer is yes, so you should pop in and support your local hills cafe.
