We were driving through the Adelaide Hills and thought we'd try something else for lunch than Hahndorf because it's touristy and overpriced, especially at this time of year. So we had a look in Loebethal and a few other little towns around but just couldn't find anything that looked appealing. Well, luckily we decided to drive the extra 17km to Birdwood because Pomegranate Cottage is a truly lovely place!
They have a very cute outside garden, with a fountain and surrounded by lots of trees and flowers so on a sunny day it's probably the best place you can find in Birdwood for lunch. (Mind you the choice isn't that big either) Great setting, friendly service and a good selection of food, ranging from pies to salads, fish to meat and some sandwiches. I had the beef pie for $14, which came with a small salad (no dressing though) and fries. You could tell the pie was homemade and not coming from a freezer. Very tasty and in terms of size I think the dishes are alright for the prices they charge.
One thing that bothered me very much though is that the waitress came clearing the plates of the 3 people that were with me while I was still eating. That's an absolute no-go and would be a reason for me not to go back. However, the food was very good so I still recommend the place. read more
