My family and I have been coming here for years whenever we are in the area, but this is the first time I've been back since the renovation. The Wooden Bakery offers a small menu of tasty but freshly made baked goods, in addition to having a small middle eastern grocery store. In all honesty, I get my middle eastern groceries closer to my house as I'm more familiar with those brands and prices; however, this establishment has a good selection as well. Today, we stopped by for some cheese man'oushe (no matter how you spell it, the person next to you will spell it differently haha). It was quite delicious! The service was great, the lady making them was polite, friendly, making conversation with us as we waited, and even making recommendations on other things to try next time. If I'm being honest, nothing beats having man'oushe fresh from a market in Beirut as you window shop and walk around; however, these are pretty good. The dough is fresh, pulls apart nicely, and has good flavor. The cheese stretches as I remember, just missing something in the flavor, though I can't quite put my finger on it...but certainly wouldn't stop me from ordering it again, as we have for years. The zatar man'oushe is also great though today we were really craving the cheese and ordered those. If you haven't already, give this place a try. The refrigerated to-go stuff was kind of lacking, in both selection and quality in comparison with the other prominent Lebanese/Middle Eastern market near Alexandria. However, their "pizza" oven and their dessert here is WAY better than the other market. But because selection is more limited, especially for vegans, I'll recommend them to visit the other market. For everyone else, don't skip this one! Get the akkawi manoushe, and the zaatar one too - they bake it fresh out to order here using the "pizza" oven, and it's delicious. Also get the ashta-filled shaabiyet (also known as warbat in some other countries) and the baklava - they both are of superb quality and should not be missed as well. You'll thank me later for them. As far as groceries, they have everything - pretty much the same things as the other market. Currently this place seems to be undergoing a change - in name and store layout. Trying to figure out where all those bad reviews came from. Maybe establishment change ownership or management,I'm not sure,but my experience was actually not bad at all. First of all,they have almost lowest price in the area on Tahini paste and couple other things I'm constantly buying. Their babaganoush is cheaper then in competitors stores and on my opinion have more clean taste, not crazy on the garlic. Now to the breads. We bought warm whole wheat pita bread and it was very good and tasty. I bought fresh manakeesh bread which we shared with my hubby and we loved it!!!! Spices are balanced,there is no bitter aftertaste which sometimes happens with other places. So,I'm sure that this place will earn our business and I didn't feel any pushy or arrogant attitude,like other people said. I got to know this hidden gem through getting a deal for pita bread on the Too Good to Go app. I unexpectedly got the hummus when I picked up the bread since I wanted to try it. And it happened to be the best hummus I ever had, even better than I could make it. So smooth, fresh and flavorful. I absolutely cannot buy grocery store hummus anymore since it is usually half eaten then thrown out after expiring. On the contrary I devoured almost half of their hummus container in one sitting. The people were nice and showed me a bit of what they offered in the store. I will be back! read more

I came here because I run on the W& OD Trail a lot and its close to the trail head in Vienna. I figured it would be a nice place to check out for a post-run coffee or snack, and I heard they have delish Lebanese style pizza, which just sounds intrestingly-amazing. My yelp map showed that they were super close, but I could not figure out exactly where. I called the establishment and asked where they were in relation to the church on Church Street, or near the Red Caboose in Vienna. The gentleman did not answer my question. Instead, he asked me if I knew where the Vienna Whole Foods was, I answered yes. He then said they're right across the street from there. In my mind, I had doubts, and I asked him again how close were they to big church on Church Street. Again, he said right across the street from Whole Foods, and he emphasized right across the street several time. So, I followed his directions, and ended up doing a complete circle, and ended up where I started. His directions were so wrong. They are not right across the street from Whole Foods...more like 4-5 blocks away from Whole Foods...moving on... Once I arrived, I noticed the pizza brick oven with the fire ablaze. It was so cool to see them preparing pizza rounds with the topping and placing them inside of the traditional fire oven. I only had a few bucks cash on me since it was right after my run. I ordered a small pastry. Unfortunately, they don't offer coffee or tea. I think that would make a nice addition. I made a mental note to go back and give the Lebanese pizza a full try. They also served small Lebanese style snacks, like mini-flat breads with cheese and meats, Lebanese pizza, and sweets like baklava and other pastries. This place also serves as a mini-market so they sell things like seasonings, canned goods and a lot of food items that I imagine are Lebanese. Customer service was really mediocre. The gentleman behind the counter was not very pleasant...very gruff and extremely short. Perhaps he was pre-occupied or having a bad day. This place is famous for its bakery. Their bread is really excellent (if you like Lebanese/Syrian style pita bread), and their Zaatar and cheese manakeesh are excellent as they are baked fresh while you wait. However, the grocery store leaves a lot to be desired in terms of variety and presentation. The variety of cheeses is really limited and their prices appear to be somewhat random and out of line with other stores. They also have their private label items that they bring from Lebanon, but the quality is not all there. They really have great bread and bakery, but I wish they could really put more effort into making this a well-stocked mediterranean grocery store. I love Wooden Bakery for their savory pies! If your not familiar with these Middle Eastern delights, they serve fresh out the oven pizza-ish thin pies. Now the toppings are far from a pie you get delivered- they have meat/cheese/za'taar combos that are sure to please your palette. What's great is that you can also grab mini spinach/meat/cheese pies that are ready to go. I love grabbing some whenever I'm in the area and they are great to take when visiting family and friends. This is my favorite secret dive Lebanese spot... Disclaimer: Do not come here for the atmosphere or expecting a fancy or romantic place. This is a dive place for real authentic Lebanese food. I wish by now, this would be the "new" definition of romantic!! This place's comparative advantage is for three things: 1. Amazing mouth-watering authentic fresh out-of-the-oven manaeesh for breakfast (don't order them in the afternoon for a sit down dinner as they are more expensive than when served at breakfast). My favorites are the Lahm b ajine (with beef) and the zaatar (Lebanese thyme spice) with veggies. 2. Lebanese hard to find spices and groceries. 3. Their manaqeesh are tasty, but we find them to be undercooked a teeny bit. But that's not a dealbreaker for us. My issue is with the adjacent market. To date, I have bought three items that turned out to be expired: a pack of baqsamaat crackers, a can of while beans, and a bag of dried legumes. That said, they have a great selection of dairy, canned and jarred food items, coffee, etc. I'll still shop here, but will make sure to check the expiration dates before checking out. read more

As a long time patron, it saddens me to say this place will never get my business again. They have a solid take on manaeesh. However, the proprietor constantly reminds me how they couldn't care any less about customer service. This is the sixth time where I phoned ahead by at least 45 mins and my order wasn't ready because she didn't start processing the order until I arrived. I was so excited to eat manakish but I was really really disappointed. Firstly, the attitude was terrible that made me feel I'm IRS or asking for charity. The owner lady has such bad customer service and poor attitude. There is no curtesy. I wanted the zaatar Manaeesh, spinach and meet sfeeha to be flat without folding in half as the other half gets stuck when folded making it hard to warm up and the folded half loses its inner ingredients. She insisted they need to be folded to fit in a bag. I do not need that small paper bag. I need my sfeeha and Manaeesh to take them whole flat not folded. Simple request got denied. So glad I found this hidden gem. I'm originally from Michigan and we are spoiled with the number of middle eastern bakeries/grocery stores, but Wooden Bakery did not disappoint. They have a huge variety of middle eastern items and a bakery/restaurant attached. I ordered two manaeesh flatbreads that were made in front of me in their traditional fire oven. So I wrote my original review out of anger. I didn't wait to get home to write it so I pulled out my mobile and wrote what was on my mind. As you can tell I had some Grammer issues.... Anyhow looking at the reviews a little more closer it appears the practice of notifying people during checkout for excessive minimum charges appears to have been going on for some time. There are two reviews in the "Not Recommended" section that describes this practice (Yelp needs to reclassify these). Cherie's experience from that section is exactly what my group and I experienced. Yes you might get a lot of money now but you've lost about 200 future customers as all my friends have been notified of this restaurant's scam. So has my credit card company. Anyhow to review the actual establishment, it's nothing to rave about. We sat on some uncomfortable sofas. Besides the singer and lights the place would have felt like a dungeon. Tea was fine but $3 for a tea bag wasn't worth it. I passed on the shisha as I'm trying to be healthier. My friends told me great things about their manakesh but my heart sinks when I see knafeh. I make knafeh myself but the knafeh I ate was awful. It was from the frozen kind (frozen? Why are you a bakery?!?!) which was given to me microwaved (worst way to heat any food). The sugar water was cold. And most important the knafeh lacked taste. I would love to try their manakesh but I would rather starve than eat at this place if it was the last place on earth. read more

She claimed that the cold food was how the food is generally served - for god sake - a shawarma is meant to be hot! Be ready to wait if you go here! Bad customer service. Walmart staff offer much better customer service than this place. I walk in and the lady behind the counter seems to be annoyed that she is working. Her face expression is extremely unwelcoming. The food isn't that great either, but was ok. I had similar Mana2eesh in Alexandria and they were much better. Customer service played a huge part of my visit. The store was dirty, and the bathroom was out of service. Maybe if they change the staff behind the counter I would come back again; until then, I don't think I would return. There are many other competitors around that area. There are very few disappointments in life and this place seems to be the place that doles them out whenever possible. You walk into this "restaurant" that is in a warehouse strip mall and feel like you're in a desert. It's very hot and swampy. Took a walk around the restaurant while we waited over 20 minutes for our shawarma sandwich and meat pie and found that the groceries they had on the shelves didn't hear a price. We all know how much we love those stores that like to make up prices as we are checking out. Anyway, food was soggy and tasteless. In terms of groceries prices it is overpriced and expensive that other average stores. The bakery seems fine but have not tried it because of their pricing and no clear pricing on shelf items. Really fashionable, and clean hookah bar. The service is very good and the food is okay. The meat doesn't have too many spices, but maybe it's a Lebanese thing? The prices look good on the menu, but it turns out there's a $3 (or $4?) charge for the disposable hose they give you with your hookah. I've been to hookah bars that give you a disposable hose, but they don't charge you for it. And the server didn't give us a choice or warn us about this charge. So that was a little annoying. When I visited, it was nice and quiet, but disturbingly empty. (Maybe not too many people know about their hookah?) It was just us and the owner's family. read more

He was super courteous & I found their prices very reasonable. The bread is pretty epic. It was piping hot & I got cheese & za'atar pies (great for the vegan among us). This could be a great option for vegan/vegetarian quick lunch in Vienna. Seating is sparse & be prepared to wait a bit for your bakery items. The menu is limited but what I got was super delicious. I absolutely adore Wooden Bakery the only authentic arabic bakery in the DC area. The restaurant has every single form of arabic pie you would ever need from meat pies to cheese to zaatar to a mix of all of them as well as very good high quality sweets. You can order before you come on the phone and the pies will be ready. Also the pies are cheaper than muncheez and a lot bigger for those who want to buy in bulk and eat at home. Wooden Bakery even bakes their own pita bread and sells it to all of the arabic stores around the area and their bread is just absolutely amazing. The Arabic store has all the items you would need from arab teas to sauces to food utensils to everything you could think of. The other part of the restaurant now has a cafe which has hookah, Turkish coffee, sweets, and the pies as well as a party every Friday and Saturday night with different singers that fly in all the way from Michigan. So it's not just a bakery but an arabic party spot. Overall this is a gem in the DC area that is absolutely adored by all people of Arab roots.
