    Pancakes were pretty good.

Before we set out on a chilly Sept. morning exploring area trail systems, we decided to order a hot breakfast from Wood Winds Restaurant. The young server who pulled our order together was exceptional. She was fast, listened to our special requests and had a tremendous attitude. 5* effort. Thank you. The eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes and omelet were "ok". They were good. Nothing earth shattering here. The pancakes were the best we thought. The eggs were ho-hum. Omelet was average with the thin ham slices not exciting anyone. But, it was hot breakfast on a chilly more. Price was right, too. I'd go to this place if I was near. Decent enough and the crowd inside seemed to be enjoying themselves. Nice service. Ask for a raise!

Southern Omelet and Philly Steak Omelet

It's not very often that I find a restaurant that I can't stop returning to, but Wood Winds was that place during my stay in northern MI. My boyfriend and I enjoyed 3 different meals here, and every one of them was top notch. The service was speedy and friendly, the food was hot, fresh, and flavorful, and the restaurant itself was very clean with cute woodsy decor. My boyfriend ordered the Philly steak omelette and the meat lovers omelette twice, and enjoyed them all. The omelettes were huge and packed full of toppings. I ordered the southern 1-egg omelette and the Philly steak 1-egg omelette and for being a smaller portion, I felt like it was still a ton of food and adequately packed with all of the fixin's. The hashbrowns on the side were also great, and perfectly crispy the second time around. My third meal was the buffalo ranch chicken wrap--one of the designated Wood Winds Favorites, and I have to agree--it was great! This place has a huge menu, and I am convinced that you can't go wrong with whatever you choose.

We were promptly greeted by a pleasant waitress wearing a dress that reminded me of something I'd seen my grandma wear in photos of when she was young. She was the only waitress but was able to handle all the customers efficiently. The menus offers a decent selection of sandwiches, salads, burgers and either breakfast all day or the catch of the week. Since this is a family restaurant there aren't a bunch of cooks in the back. I ordered the hand beer battered cod with a loaded baked potato and my husband ordered a jalapeño cheese burger. We also chose jalapeño poppers as an appetiser at the recommendation of the waitress. We were impressed that the water we received were LARGE glasses full of ice (they seem to be getting smaller these days) and surprisingly we never ran out. The jalapeño poppers were amazing! They were fresh half jalapeños, sliced with seeds removed, filled with fresh cream cheese (probably local) and dipped in the same batter as the fish. They were flash fried, not overly fried, so you could actually taste the peppers!! We both loved them! When our food came, my husband commented that he was impressed with the portion size compared to the prices, which were less than what was on the menu. He loved his burger and hand cut fries. The cod was delicious! I could only eat 1.5 of the large pieces so my husband finished it off! The only part of this experience that wasn't perfect was my baked potato was so large it wasn't cooked all the way through. We took it home where we'll finish cooking it and will eat it for lunch. We took a menu with us. We will be back to try the breakfast and definitely something from the dessert menu which includes pies, cheesecake, ice cream and shakes! They also have a sign that says Free Coffee on Tuesday (with purchase of course). If you find yourself in Onaway, stop in at Ma's!

The Farmer's Table is conveniently located just off the Wolverine, MI exit of I-75. It looks like it may have once been a gas station; very unassuming building with a huge parking lot for all sorts of vehicles, trucks and RV's. Once you step inside, the magic happens. Cute and cozy, filled with charming little tables and a mercantile area, the friendly staff will greet you and make you feel at home. Their menu is varied with many entrees made from locally sourced ingredients. This concept feels fresh and healthy, though the entrees themselves feel like grandma's cooking. Not fancy or trendy, but hearty, flavorful home cooking. My husband chose a pork chop, baked potato, corn and side salad. The photo of the pork chop looks juicy and tender; it was just that. He said it was the best pork chop he's ever had. The apple glaze was really good. I chose the chicken cordon blue, to sample something I would not make at home. It was rich, a tad salty yet very good. The side corn was amazing, as was the apple slaw. Next time I'll ask for mashed potatoes without the dark gravy. We took a small fried raspberry pie for dessert on the road and enjoyed mulling the through their homemade bakery items. The prices were very reasonable. We will be making this stop a regular on our way up north. Look forward to trying their brunch items, which get raved reviews.

We arrived about 7, and the place was packed. We sat at an 'uncleared' table in the bar-end, and waited for quite some time before the waitress came to clear the table. There were 2 women behind the bar who seemed to be doing little, and I was surprised that they didn't help the waitress, as the bar was not busy at all. Two of us ordered the 'fish dinner special', while the other two ordered burgers. I remained at the table while the three went to the salad bar. When it was my turn, the salad bar didn't even have lettuce, and little else. We mentioned this to one of the bar tenders, and again later to our waitress. After 20 minutes, the salad bar was re-loaded. Shortly after...our food was delivered. Those eating the burgers seemed pleased. The portion size was good, and the food was well prepared. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the fish dinners. I'm unsure as to what kind of fish this was, but it was ill-prepared. The batter fell off of the fish, and had the consistency of mashed potatoes. The fish, while hot, was rubber-tough, and had a slimy finish. I ate most of the fries, but almost none of the fish. I would never order fish there again. The bar is adequate, the staff is friendly, albeit, the wait staff was spread way too thin, and there was no bus help. I will probably end up there at some future time, but will order the burgers, or pizza.
