This is a typical small town Café. I had the country skillet. It was pretty much what I expected it to be. I can't say I'm fond of canned mushrooms, but it was tasty enough. Waitresses were very friendly and it seems to be a pretty popular place. To be honest, I was looking for country fried steak, and I assumed this place would have it, but no. I might eat here again but it's nothing spectacular. oh and by the way, I really dislike it when I get my coffee, the right color and the waitress pours more in and screws it up. read more

Amazingly great food and really fresh. Everything we had was either homemade and or locally sourced, and you can really tell...in fact I forgot how great these little hometown places were as far as quality, compared to the cookie cutter Greek style "coney island" type of diners that are inundated in the metro Detroit area, that share some bland gross formula of bland and blah! The ambiance was definitely hometown and local feeling, which gave this place charm including the house refrigerator they had behind the front counter and the lack of technology aiding the servers to calculate bills, so frequently I saw many or all the servers hunched over doing the math on the bill. Interestingly, they had free wifi lol. One thing that did stand out that took a hit on their rating for me, was the service. The very first time in and there isnt a sign guiding you to sit or wait, so angry looking lady comes from the back sort of glaring at us and I say "seat ourselves?", after a few seconds she just stared at me and then barked out "sit anywhere", funny thing is each of the empty tables (about 6 of them) were not cleaned off, which was a little awkward, I could be wrong (probably am) I think the cook had to come out to clean tables. Next thing I noticed on this first visit with the angry server was how slow and inefficient she was, I mean we sat and sat and no waters or coffee for several minutes (which included refills and the follow-up stuff like "how is everything") , again the place wasn't 100% full and she looked to only have about 3 tables. I also noticed that the other servers quickly handled the other parties coming in after us very timely, and I actually had to grab another server for a refill as she was zooming by. Perhaps our server was just filling in and was a doctor or Metaphysicist by trade. In any event we loved the food so much we came back, so the service part was really a non-issue, more of an annoyance. Something to note is...as odd as it is to see these days, they are cash only, so bring enough because I didn't see an ATM. I would certainly recommend this place for quality, flavor and price! read more

Kortmans is just north of the M68/M23 intersection, so please go past McDonalds and check out Kortman's. The burgers are great, the baked chicken is raved over, and the homemade pies are killer too. We're trying to branch out from McDonalds, and this place does great for that. The food is much better, and it's comparable in price now, since McDonalds keeps going up! A great cheeseburger loaded with toppings, fries, and a Pepsi will be about $9.50 which for a hand-smashed fresh beef burger is great. The chicken / roast beef / roast pork & dressing meals are only $8.95 on special! Roll by Kortman's, great small town place. Staff is friendly, restrooms are clean, everything was great. I've taken the family here several times for breakfast. The service is always very good. The food is good old heavy traditional breakfast food. We love it. The place has been clean and tidy every time we've gone. We will go again! Why only 4 stars? - went for dinner and had the fish and chips. The fish is horrible!!! It was way over cooked and the tartar sauce is a sweet sauce that is really nasty. If you want "fish n chips go somewhere else. Simply put - Kortman's is an institution. My family has been coming here since the 1950's. The food here is nothing fancy, but oh so good and comforting. Best breakfast IMHO in the entire world. I was very disappointed, I read all the great reviews and expected an enjoyable dinner. It was about 630 p.m and they were out of several things. I ordered the roast pork dinner and got roast pork with beef gravy, and they did not even bother to tell me they ran out of pork gravy or offer me something else. The bread was delicious but had to ask for it twice. Our waiter was friendly enough but very inattentive . Left unsatisfied, will not return. Most of our food was canned or frozen. read more

This restaurant is the best in northern Michigan! There is extremely quick service for breakfast; about 15 minutes! The food is some of the greatest I've had in a long time. The southern omelet is highly suggested. If it is your birthday, you receive a fresh cinnamon roll. It is relatively cheap, and the atmosphere is very fun and relaxed. This place is consistent, you will always be treated like a valued customer, no matter if you are a local or just passing through. They offer daily specials, and home cooked, diner style food.
