Charming breakfast and brunch spot. Everything is very fresh, and of course organic. The coffee's and smoothies are great. They have weekly specials, in addition to their regular menu, so that's nice. While the only thing spectacular about their veggie chili is the size of the bowl, he breakfast sandwich was very good. The BATH sandwich was to die for! The bread was fluffy, fresh, and healthy (many visible whole grains). They atmosphere is adorable with a cottage feel with a homey dining area. I also tried (a few) samples of the homemade peanut butter cookies and it was amazing. It was moist but not too moist, crumbly but not too crumbly, and as peanut buttery but not too peanut buttery. The wait staff was friendly but the only problem was that when the lunch rush came in, it seemed like the staff couldn't keep up. Many delicious items on their creative menu including some super veggie dishes. The Smoked Trout topped with a poached egg, partnered with butternut squash and potato hash is stellar. Lots of yummy baked goods and excellent brewed iced tea. Seating can be a bit chaotic as there doesn't seem to be an effective system so if you are with a large party you may need to be patient. read more

Came here with my boyfriend for brunch on a hot afternoon. I ordered the tofu scramble wrap and added the salsa to make things interesting. I also had a cup of their medium roast coffee and shared a smoothie with my boyfriend. For starters, the coffee was very nice; a smooth but rich taste that had me asking for more. When I asked the waitress to split the smoothie with my boyfriend I expected for it to be served in one glass with two straws. I was pleasantly surprised when she brought us our share in two separate glasses. As for the smoothie itself, it was nothing short of delicious made with one of my favourite brands of juice: Black River juice. When our main meals finally arrived (there was a little bit of a wait before we were served) I wasn't sure what to expect, as I had never had a tofu scramble wrap before. It was amazing, to be frank. The tofu and vegetables were seasoned delectably with curry powder and the salsa was refreshing. One of the reasons I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 was because I wish that all of the delicious vegetables and tofu would have stayed inside the wrap; unfortunately, the wraps themselves were a bit on the small side and the fillings were spilling out onto my plate when I tried to handle them. Even still, normally wraps do not leave me fully satisfied and I find myself still hungry for more food; this wrap left me completely satisfied and a full belly. All in all the restaurant had a great feel, what looked like exquisite desserts and baked goods, and our waitress was friendly but not too overbearing like some tend to be. I would recommend this restaurant to all of my friends and will be returning for those baked goods! read more

Overview: Mediocre food with long wait for food We were in the area and thought we'd grab a late breakfast here. So many great reviews it seemed like a no brainer. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed. We came at a good time was it was mostly empty but filled up to almost full in the time we were there. We seated ourselves and had a waiter quickly serve us. They had a very good selection of coffees, teas and other hot drinks. We asked if we could split/start with a smoothie. We were expecting a big glass with 2 straws but they nicely brought out 2 smaller glasses. Great start. However, it went a little downhill from here. I ordered the breakfast sandwich on an English muffin but they were out of English muffins. Kinda odd a bakery being out of bread products. Anyway, I said regular bread was fine. Then the wait started. It took close to 30min before our main dish arrived with people next to us getting food first who arrived well after us... With a place being almost empty I wouldn't want to come at a busy time. When the meal came it was very flavourful. However, the peameal bacon was very thin and not much else too it. No veggies at all. I kinda expected maybe a tomato and or lettuce. The main order was also just the sandwich as most of the mains did not come with a side. Luckily I did order a side of hashbrowns. For $8 but 3 extra for a cup of hashbrowns there are better places to get full. Overall it was a mediocre experience with a long wait. I'd love to see them utilize their bakery for more menu options. A lot of wraps instead of bakery buns or bread. Also, including at least a small side with meals or maybe some toast at least. Overall impression, I'd give it another try read more

The baked goods are usually wonderful, but consistency is not the greatest for things such as scones or bread. They are either wonderful OR they are hard, dry and flat.. luckily, you can tell by looking at the bread. They should possibly improve their practices around the making and selling of their "low gluten options". I have only purchased spelt bread once, and it fell to pieces in the bag on my walk home. I asked to speak to a supervisor once, regarding the consistently rude woman at the counter, only to find out that the rude woman IS the supervisor. Her name was Suzanne, and she was awful.. every single time. The bakery should not be rated on the same page as the cafe! In spite of the delicious menus options, they do not seem at all equipped for take-out or deliveries. Our office has stopped ordering from them due to the frequency of errors and their reluctance to accept fault for such errors. My least favorite thing about this cafe is the time it takes to eat. The second (and last) time I ate there, we were seated for almost 20 mins before being asked if we would like a drink! Had I not been with an old friend, I would have left. There is no way for me to fathom that a kitchen with at least 6 people in it cannot make a sandwich in less than 45 minutes.. even when they aren't super busy. Any even then, the place seats 30 people at most. There are clearly some major issues in how the place is being run. I like the idea of the place, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. As great as the BATH sandwich is-bacon, avocado, tomato and havarti, I really can't say much about this place. Yes, call me an outlier. But honestly, this place is one filled with overpriced sandwiches and pretentious customers. My girlfriend and I went there for breakfast today (Sunday) and the service was meek. They could not accommodate our request to get a table inside as soon as one was available (it was raining outside). So we went to the patio where we dealt with customers who were nasty to us when we asked them if a table had been taken. When my breakfast burrito arrived, it was soggy and gross. There was hardly any eggs inside and what was there was cold. I left the place hungry. By the time we left, there was a massive line out the door-when we tried to exit those blocking the way just looked at us blankly. Honestly, if you want a full meal and a friendly environment do not come to this place. The chefs are stingy on the ingredients as the customers are stingy on being decent human beings. read more

I love that the baked goods in the restaurant are made just across the street at their bakery. The freshness (partly) justifies the prices. It is a bit much though so I'd never make it a weekly place to go, just once in a while to take visitors or for a treat. Luckily, my favourite thing to get is some Earl Grey tea and a scone, which is about the same price as a scone anywhere but tastes like a million times better. Seriously, the best scones I've ever had (and I lived in England for a year). And the jam with the scones is pretty great too. The other items I've tried (bacon and eggs, bagels, and veggie chili with bread) were all good but are definitely not what I keep going back here for (Hint: Scones). The staff are nice and food comes out pretty quick. The staff give the place kind of a hipster (or at least what I think is hipster) vibe but the decor makes it cutesy, like someone's grandmother's house (not my grandmother obviously but like a hipster's grandmother in a movie about hipsters). Baked goods are expensive but I've been going for years...every Saturday morning. Lately it seems the care and cusomer service has disappeared. The bakery side has somebody serving that thinks its ok to put six scones and muffins in a box then shake them until the box can be jammed shut. Gave up after three weeks of this and moved to the other side of the street. Now everything goes in a bag and I have to tell them "Iced scones on top please." I think this is common sense. Asked for a manager at 8:00 to discuss this and "They don't come in until about 9:00." Sad....premium price....Walmart service. read more

I'm extremely sadden by my previous visit to With the Grain. I came slightly after lunch with my laptop and sat at my usual seat. I waited and waited as i watched the waiter walk around and by and even avoid eye contact with me. I assumed they were busy and waited until one would come over to offer me water and give me a menu. A sweet family of 5 with a baby came and sat right across me. As the they were beginning to seat the kids down, a waiter was already placing water and menus on their table and walked right by me. I called her over. I was patiently waiting for exactly 17 mins and told her that. She apparently had not seen me (I'm siting right near the kitchen, mind you), she claimed. I looked at her confused and stunned knowing for a fact she walked by me at least 7 times to go into the kitchen. completely heart broken to find out from another customer next to me who had noticed me sitting there waiting, came over and told me she had witnessed it all and not to be so naive. I can't believe I was discriminated for my skin colour. The waiter went back to finally get my water and menu. I decided I was not at all going to eat or support this restaurant and packed my stuff to leave. As I went to the front she was behind me, carrying the menu and water bottle asking if i was leaving. I just nodded and left. Its 2016 and this is still happening. Disappointed. Never coming back and advising others like me not to even bother with coming here. :(((( read more

I like everything about this place except the bread, which is soooo sugary it explains the lie-up of addicts at the door each day. they have lovely ingredients on really delicious looking sandwiches, but each and every slice of bread tastes like it has about two tablespoons of sugar in it. Yeeeech! great decor, good staff. Interesting location - they act as sort of the north end's introduction to downtown. But the bread, gawd - I mean even the rye tastes like breakfast cereal it's so sugary. Hence the mediocre score. read more

I have a been a loyal "With the Grain" customer since they opened. One of the things I have alway appreciated has been the consistency in their products and in the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, even if parking can often be a nightmare. That is until this weekend. I'm sad to say I just paid my last visit there. Yesterday I bought a loaf of cheese and garlic bread there and did not notice until I opened the bag at home that the loaf had not sufficiently risen. Easy mistake I suppose but why would the staff try to sell the rock-like object they put in my bag. The real issue was the attitude of the manager when I returned the bread. At first she was apologetic and offered a refund and another loaf for my trouble, but not the bread I wanted. I was told that bread was for the kitchen tomorrow. I would have to take 4 grain or nothing. Really???? I took nothing and you lost a long time customer in the bargain. read more
