It was a cold morning and I went with my husband to get some coffee. I ended up also getting a sandwich. They didn't have any March specials or anything; I love a seasonal or limited drink. They have your common cafe options and flavored syrups to choose from, along with a variety of tea. The server was very kind and was willing to think up something unique for me when I asked if they had any specials. I went with a hot classic Hazelnut latte. The coffee was creamy, not too sweet, and the hazelnut was subtle. They had different pastries, sandwiches, and cakes to choose from. I got a bacon egg croissant sandwich, which they kindly heated up. I really liked the croissant they used; it wasn't so flaky that with every bite I was making a mess. The tomato jam they used was sweet but paired really well with the ingredients! Honestly would love to try to recreate this at home because it was just that good. It was a warm cozy place, small area with a small side table with about 3-4 bar stools; it's connected to the restaurant (The Bauer Kitchen). I stopped by because I needed $10 in cash to get an extra class composite for my graduation photo, but I only had tap. Unfortunately, they weren't able to provide cash back, but Pedro went above and beyond--he generously gave me $10 of his own money. Seriously, promote this man! His kindness made my day. I wanted to grab a late lunch on a Sunday in Waterloo and decided to visit The Bauer Kitchen. I found it on a rainy day, but ended up going through The Bauer Bakery & Cafe entrance to get to the restaurant. Two items immediately caught my eye. I love anything that is key lime. There were key lime tarts brightening my spirits on such a gloomy day. Next to them were these large nutter butter cookies. I knew that I wanted them, but needed to get some lunch first. The bakery and restaurant are connected. It's convenient. After lunch, I came back to the bakery, and got a nutter butter cookie and a key lime tart to go. The young man taking my order was great and friendly. I paid using a credit card and continued looking at all the yummy goodies in the display case. I love butter tarts and this bakery has some. You can also get sandwiches if you want something more savoury. It also offers herbal tea selections, which made me happy. I had both desserts back at the hotel before I left Waterloo. They were delicious! For years, I have been waiting for a key lime tart that has the right tartness and the best buttery, crunchy crust. I have found perfection. The lime slice is analogous cherry on top of this divine tart. I love nutter butter cookies. I used to import them from the States when they weren't readily available in Canada. This huge nutter butter cookie is so scrumptious. Think of two peanut butter cookies that are soft, yet don't disintegrate in your hand, with a creamy peanut butter filling inside. Sheer brilliance. Yum! There are a few seats in this cafe, but not a whole lot. When I was there, two women were seated, and there were perhaps two or three seats available. I have found my new favourite bakery in Waterloo. I'm so glad that I did. This place offers vegan and gluten-free option, too. I'm a fan. I'm definitely coming back for more. (370) read more

The Maple Hazelnut Latte on St. Patrick's Day was delicious but the St. Patrick's Day donut with Bailey's creme and Guinness glaze was out of this world!!! Ate the donut in the car and had to go back to get more! The veggie wrap was crispy and surprising. Would love to visit again! read more

The employees at the Bauer cafe are super nice. Their monthly drink specials are usually very good and worth a try. They make great lattes, and don't charge extra for milk alternatives. This is a great place to stop by for a coffee! read more

We went to the Bauer Cafe to grab sandwiches around 2pm, after looking at the menu online. We ordered the chicken breast sandwich and the chik'n wrap. The sandwiches came in the same box- not something I was too upset about considering I am a vegetarian but others could be upset about contamination. The chicken sandwich's bun was hard & stale, and the sandwich itself was lacking. The chik'n wrap (besides the meatless patty) was tasteless and dry, and had unseasoned basmati rice in it which felt really out of place. Overall for $20, this meal was extremely disappointing and the contents of the sandwiches should definitely be reconsidered. read more

A really like this place for grabbing a quick lunch. It's within walking distance from my office building so I usually go a few times during the winter and more often in warmer months. I love the salads and the treats, squares, cookies and bars are all amazingly yummy. They do good coffee and lattes too, available iced too. If you don't get there early the selection might be less as they sell out fast, but you can call ahead and they will put something aside for you. Staff is friendly and chill. read more

I wish I could write a positive review like the first review but I find myself comparing Bauer bakery to Sabletine and it's clear Sabletine is the better bakery. The two bakeries sit on the same block (along side Vincenzo's and they have a baked good section as well). I've come to this area twice so far and purchased from both bakeries. Though Bauer's bakery is more relaxed and rustic, it falls flat on similar baked goods. I purchased a maple tart, a plain croissant, and an almond croissant between two visits. The first visit was a bit of a disappointment as the barista informed why their shelves were almost barren. She mentioned that their baker was on vacation and nothing was available. I did choose a maple tart who's price tag was around $4. It looked pretty with it's browned caramelized top. When I bit into it, I was a 'sad panda'. The top was really an "empty thin shell" sitting above the crust and maybe a drizzle of syrup in the middle. There was a good centimetre of air between that shell and the drizzle of syrup. Seeing how this was described to me by the barista as a butter tart but with maple syrup, this was a huge disappointment. Air is not a butter tart gooey centre replacement. Not only the filling was measly, it was also runny. Definitely not worth the price tag. The second time I came, I bought 2 croissants. Seeing how they advertise that their croissants take 2 days to make (I'm assuming they're talking about proofing their dough), I was hoping this would make up for the tart. The croissants were almost double the price of Sabletine's but to be fair, they were also much bigger. The croissants were oddly flat to what I'm used to and that should have indicated that these not made in the traditional sense. When I cut the croissant in half, it was clear it did not have good technique to get the buttery layering. It looked like wonderbread. For a croissant cross section, you should see the lovely layers swirled around in a circle. When I bit into it, it was a bit too chewy so it didn't have traditional crispy texture. It was also missing the buttery flavour of a good croissant. The almond croissant wasn't any better... if anything it was worse because it clearly skimped on the almond filling! I bit into it thinking I got another plain croissant by accident. Any nutty taste of the croissant came from the sparse nuts placed on top of the croissant instead of inside. The service was good though... they were polite and fairly quick. It's just unfortunate the baked goods do not deliver especially for the price! Just take a quick minute and walk around the corner to Sabletine to get good baked goods. read more

Phenomenal service, and great coffee. I am a bit of a coffee snob, only being able to order from very few establishments. Bauer Bakery and Cafe's bold coffee is fantastic. Their muffins are always super moist and the veggie breakfast sandwiches are much better than the Starbucks equivalent. read more
