As a bar vet myself, I know that mistakes happen, and when they do, recovery is key. I came into a busy bar on a Thursday night, and sat down to place a takeout order and have a beer while I waited. Bertram the Bartender was prompt and cordial - took my order (more enthusiastically than any takeout order I ever took), and poured my beer. My order hit the bartop with only a sip left of my beer, and I cashed out and left. But then I arrived at home, opened the bag, and-- oh no! One of my three items was wrong. I turned around and went back to Winter Hill Brewing. Bertram recognized me with that puzzled "uh-oh" face, and I told him what had happened. He immediately apologized, said he would fix it, and asked if I wanted to keep the erroneous order. I still have no idea who specifically made the error in my order, and that's exactly how it should be for me as a guest. Winter Hill gave me the wrong food, Winter Hill fixed it - simple as that. Bertram went straight to the line and (presumably) explained what happened. He had warned me that it might be a moment before my order was fixed, but to my surprise (and delight) the order was definitely expedited - the single item came out in a fraction of the time it took for my original order. As Bertram ran the busy bar, the floor manager/expeditor brought my order out, checked with both of us that the order was meant for me, and packed it into a bag for me, allowing Bertram to keep taking orders. This wasn't a huge mistake - I didn't need a whole dialogue with a manager or a $20 gift card, and thankfully I didn't get one. It's not Ruby Tuesday. But on the other end, I didn't get that disdainful, you'll-eat-what-you-get vibe that small mustachioed operations can give. You make good beer. You make good food. I'm just trying to eat and drink what you're slinging, and when that went awry, y'all did *exactly* what you needed to do to fix it. Thank you. read more

This is the best coffee around me - the only other place with coffee I liked as much is in West Roxbury. I order an almond milk latte, and it's perfect. I just wish they had a large size - it's gone too quickly. It's very quick in the morning and almost never super busy - easy to order a latte while the bus is a few minutes away and still catch it on time. Their salt bagel with cream cheese is delicious, and they have GREAT donuts on Sunday mornings - almost the only time in the morning that there's a significant line. This is one of only two coffee shops where most of the staff know my name, the other one being the place where I teach ESL four days a week. Highly recommend. read more

What a fun spot! As a Boston native, I'm embarrassed that I didn't even know winter hill was a neighborhood but this is a delightful addition to the scene!! It has a hipster, wood and industrial vibe that perfectly complements the food and experience. Though I wasn't drinking, this place is an IPA lovers dream with super fruity and flowery brews! As a wheat beer fan, there wasn't anything for me on the menu but I would be willing to try any of their tasty sounding ales. We ordered the Korean style Brussels sprouts - so delicious and flavorful! The kale salad - super tasty save for the incredibly underripe and winterized tomatoes, and veggie and taco special that came with chips and salsa! The meat was overcooked for me but still had great flavor and the chips and salsa were awesome!! Our server was super sweet and attentive, too. read more

As a cafe in the morning, they are pretty great. Good coffee, and a breakfast sandwich that you can add arugula and tomato to for free. (I'm always asking for those exact two ingredients elsewhere and being told no or being charged for them). As a relatively new place, the tables are still noticeably clean and it's a wonderful place to do some work. Their lunch/dinner food is also pretty great with the Korean Brussels sprouts being so good that I've gone back for literally just one order of them and nothing else. Good sandwiches, solid buffalo cauliflower... As of the beer, more hit and miss than I'm okay with, and that's the minus one star. I've had an IPA there that was really wonderful, and went back a week later for the same IPA and it tasted like cough syrup. So I generally just stick to the pitcher of house ale, because it's the most consistent. read more

Love this place! We live right across the street and usually come here for a quick bite and their house ale, which is a great, easy beer. They are also open in the morning and their coffee is pretty good, they have an actual barista who knows how to make a proper latte. My son and I were visiting friends in Malden and decided to have them drop us off for a late lunch and beer on a Tuesday. A great idea! A very local brewery with a great Iced Regular milk stout. Ordered the Spicy Korean Brussels Sprouts and the Buffalo cauliflower. Really really good! Friendly staff! Also serves as a local coffee shop with lattes and everything in between. I go to this restaurant because there aren't many options in the neighborhood. Beer is good and changes all the time, brewed onsite. Service is inconsistent - you never know if you're going to get a gruff manager or a bartender who is in a good mood. Pricing is weird - I ordered pork sliders ($9) and fries, and they charged me $6.50 for the fries. I had to negotiate with the waitress and have her explain why a $10 sandwich got free fries but a $9 sandwich got charged $6.50. To her credit, eventually she removed the charge but I didn't enjoy having to negotiate for it. Bar is very cool looking with a nice outdoor patio. Bathrooms are clean and roomy. They host local bands and trivia nights which is awesome, but I still hope some other restaurants open up in the neighborhood. read more

I'm lucky to say that this place is both my local brewery and coffee shop. They take their coffee seriously, and the beer is pretty good too. Service can be spotty, and they're still fleshing out their menu offerings, but I get the sense that this place is a labor of love and a passion project. Winter Hill is a nice addition to the Boston brewing scene. While I tend to think that most of the brewing innovation in New England happens outside the Boston area and Winter Hill didn't change that opinion, there need to be a lot more neighborhood oriented breweries in town and this fills that need pretty well. I wasn't wowed by any of the beers at Winter Hill, but they were well done takes on all the usual styles and the price point is good for the area. The food menu looks (and smells!) good, but I wasn't able to try it so I'll have to come back for that. read more

So they have been open for a month. Constructive criticism time. The Russian imperial don't change a thing. Best beer on tap. That beer is the reason to visit along with something ill mention later. The IPAs and other beers leave something to be desired. Almost there but the regular IPA and the black IPA mediocre and too bitter. Very much a hipster vibe as far as the crowd. Very loud. You might like that vibe no judgement. Friendly curtious service. Food: Korean Brussel sprouts a-ma-ing another reason to go along with their fried pickles. The chickpea gyro was disappointing in flavor very bland, would have been better ground up with some curry spice. The Bahn mi was not a Bahn mi. I may be spoiled by super 88 and Chinatown in Boston, but deli pork with some sauce with pickled veggies is not a Bahn mi. I suggest the chef go try an authentic one to understand. I did not fancy the parmesean rosemary fries but my husband loved them. Not sure what the ketchup tomato jam dip for them was trying to be, but it still needs to find itself. The coleslaw was good, but could have used some pepper. Overall ok, the place needs some time. read more

Never have had a bad experience. My sister in law is a regular during the week for her pre-work coffee and swears by it, I'm quite jealous that we don't live as close as she does. I have been known to be demanding when it comes to my standards on food and Winter Hill has always met or exceeded these expectations. My husband can never pass up a Cubano sandwich and has said that theirs is better than the ones he has gotten at the expensive gastropubs downtown that I drag him to. I love that they have taken the extra effort to not only add a brewery and restaurant to the neighborhood but a cafe to get your morning "on-the-way-to-work coffee" too. GO HERE. DO IT. read more

I so wanted to love this place. I love beer. I love local spots brewing their own beer. And I love local spots that add food to their brew selection. Winter Hill doesn't do anything wrong per se. The space itself is lovely - cool, industrial, open. But the beer is just okay - as is the food. I came here after the brewery had been open a few weeks in the hopes that they'd work out any opening issues. My BF and I tried four of the five beers on tap between the two of us. The IPA smelled amazing, but finished with a strange off-taste. The stout was solid but unremarkable. The kolsch could have used a stronger flavor hook - same goes for the black IPA. For food, we ordered olives as a starter (meh, okay), plus a banh mi sandwich and panzella salad. The salad was solid, but the sammy had too much bread and mayo and not nearly enough pickled veggies and cilantro to brighten and balance everything out. So, overall, eh, not bad. This neighborhood lacks a solid restaurant scene so Winter Hill Brewing is a step in the right direction. It does, however, still have a lot of work to do before it can compete with stronger establishments nearby. read more

A whole lot of care went into making this place and it shows in every facet: the staff, the space, the food, coffee and of course THE BEER. It's only a few days old and it's already a great place to meet neighbors and buds, grab a pint of delicious beer, and eat some yummy (elevated) comfort food. I went into this place seriously wanting to like it, but I'll probably never go back. The ambiance is amazing. The exposed tanks behind the glass at the bar is really cool, and I was super into the fact that there were laser disc cases on the bathroom wall as opposed to records or some other trendy thing. The cream ale we got was good. Not great, but pretty good. But the food was COMPLETELY mediocre and way overpriced given the quality. I'm a chef, and I really wanted to go in the back and explain to these people that you really need to season your food. The tofu in the bahn mi was so bland. In order to actually impart any flavor into tofu, you need to marinate it. I had to load that sandwich with Sriracha in order to eat it. We also tried the chickpea wrap which was, again, so mediocre. The best party was the pita, and I'm doubting that they make their own pitas. The tzatziki was bland, not enough salt or dill, and otherwise, it was just a wrap I could have gotten anywhere in Somerville and probably paid way less for it. The fries were also bland. I don't like salt on anything, but I had to put salt on these fries because there was just no flavor. They also said they had parmesan on them, but I didn't taste it at all. Like I've said, it was just really, really bland. I'm pretty irritated that they think it's appropriate to charge $11 for a sandwich and $6.00 for a plate of french fries that seriously aren't anything special. We will definitely never be going back here and walked away feeling like we were completely swindled out of $50. read more

Meh. Really not impressed. We were really looking forward to trying this this addition to the neighborhood. Brew pubs have been done all over the city and with much better results (CBC, Boston Beer Works). The beer was just okay. My husband got the house ale which was lacking in flavor as was the saison which supposedly had pomegranate, but was only vaguely fruity. Waited 40+ minutes for our Cubano sandwiches to come out. Our waitress was nice, but never checked in with us to tell us the kitchen was backed up. She did apologize for the wait when the food came out. The sandwich bread was good, but definitely not what should be used for a Cubano, way too thick and chewy. My husband's sandwich also visibly had about twice as much meat as mine. The flavors were just okay. We ended up taking half of our food home since it was a super cold night and we were eating outside. We had to put more mayo and mustard to get good flavor. The parmesan rosemary fries were the highlight of the meal, perfectly flavored and salty. Definitely not worth it. I've had the coffee during the day. I really enjoyed this place. I love the interior and the bar and side seating area. It was really busy when we got there at 6:45 on a Friday night and stayed busy. They have tables as well for those looking to grab a bite. The price is right for the beers and the two I tried were really tasty. I ordered the house ale and Munich horizon and my boyfriend had the frequency kolsch. My favorite was the Munich Horizon hoppy enough but not too hoppy and full of flavor. The bartenders were nice and the service was great. We were recognized the second we walked in and serviced even after we sat on stools off to the side which was great.
