Went to Winston's for my wife's birthday. Had 6:15 reservations and were promptly seated outdoors as requested. Berk was our waiter and after bringing us bread, water and a glass of wine, took our order around 6:30. After 30 minutes Berk apologized for the delay in getting our food and said there was "trouble with the entrees". We had ordered, simple items (salad, chicken wings, popcorn shrimp, a burger and fried green tomatoes). After 45 minutes he once again apologized for the delay and said our food would be right out. At 7:20 I left the table, found Berk and told him were were leaving if the food was not out in 5 minutes. The food was served in short order by another individual but wings, burger, shrimp and tomatoes were all luke warm. Did not see Berk again until he brought the bill. I've eaten at Winston's several times previously, and while the food and service has always been excellent- I felt the need to leave a review after my experience today. This morning I called in and spoke with Jamar around 9:45 in hopes of being able to place an office order for pickup at 11 AM. Keep in mind, this is the normal opening time. Without hesitation Jamar & staff were able to prepare 17 takeout meals, each appropriately labeled with only an hours notice. Upon arrival I was offered something to drink by several different employees. There were also several employees who helped carry the food out to my car. This is my favorite restaurant anywhere. We've been going there for more than 10 years. Their menu is varied and everything I've had there is exceptional! (Except pizza) Great salads (black and blue and BLT are favorites, great specials and the bruschetta is out of this world! I've dined here several times, and after my last experience I feel confident giving Winston's five stars! Winston's is a Raleigh staple, offering a unique menu and dining experience. I love the variety of the menu (everything from steak to sushi), and don't even get me started on their homemade ice cream (heath crunch is my favorite)! I've always had excellent service during each of my visits, no matter how busy it's been. The only con I've experienced was waiting to be seated a good bit past my reservation time on several occasions, however it was once amended with a free appetizer. Winston's Grille is a Raleigh institution. Their crabcake salad puts them on the map! I am a salad person and I seek out restaurants with the best exotic mix. Winston's is on top! Make sure you ask your server for additional tea or beverages on first service. Servers are not diligent or well trained to return and ask you if you need more of anything. Just had the best moms night out there with some amazing ladies. You always need to make a reservation no matter what day it is but your able to make on online or call so it's super convenient. I have eaten at Winston's twice now. Both times have been great. The first was a few weeks ago, we had an after work dinner meeting. We started off with a crab dip, popcorn shrimp, and a spicy shrimp. I only had some of the crab dip, but it was to die for. For my meal, I ordered the shrimp and grits. I had never had that before at any restaurant, but theirs was so delicious. I can't imagine anyone doing it better. The grits were creamy and the shrimp were perfectly cooked. For dessert, I took a slice of their key lime pie home. My husband and I both devoured the pie within minutes. It was so good. Creamy, cool, and the perfect lime flavor. Last Sunday, my husband and I ate there for brunch. He had a quesadilla & loved it. I ordered the eggs benedict. It was good, very tasty. All in all, we really enjoy Winston's. First off, I have been wanting to take the family here for three years and I've never left a bad review for customer service because I know it depends on the day. Had great reviews and three other family members had great experiences but when I decided to take our son out to Winston's Grille to celebrate his graduation with the family, he couldn't even get a coke before the end of his meal. (It was not that busy at 5:30 and plenty of staff) Charged me 16.00 for a chicken sandwich with no sides. I asked for a side salad that came out after everyone was finished eating and the coke never came. I asked twice for a salad and a coke. Manager (female) would not budge on reducing my bill on a 15 dollar chicken sandwich. Manager stated that she cannot give a discount on a total bill. The bill was of over 400 dollars and she stated I can take a salad and coke to go. Really?? Chick-fil-A manager's treat their guest better than this place but I guess this is a "high roller" place to eat. Winston's grille just lost 6 customers for good and I'm sure they don't care. I was very impressed with the service, food, martinis, and had a wonderful experience overall. Being in Raleigh for work that particular week, I always search online for great food experiences when out of town, and I've been lucky thus far with my choices. My preferred seating is at the bar in most places I visit, because I enjoy engaging with other patrons and staff as I'm usually solo. The scallop special I ordered was divine, along with the crab dip as an appetizer. I knew I'd be taking a lot of food home, but like to try different items at places, especially a good crab dip. It was perfect, and I'm a bit (a lot) snobby about crab dip after living at the coast for years. It was also recommended by the bartenders. The dirty martinis were well-made and balanced. I couldn't leave without getting the key lime pie to go- because the couples beside me at the bar guilted me into it. ;) and the bartender packaged it in a makeshift cooler for my 2.5 hr drive home for the week. Brought my family of 4 with a 530PM reservation for my wife's birthday tonight. Not sure we'll be back. We were seated in the sunroom portion of the restaurant with many larger parties around us. The service was terribly slow!! It shouldn't take 2+ hours for a table of four to have a dinner service. We were seated on time, but there were multiple 20+ minute waits for appetizer, entree, dessert and the check during our service. Our server repeatedly failed to provide adequate priority to our table. She was pleasant and polite but absentee for the majority of the meal. Our food arrived warm...but not hot after an extended wait. We were so hungry we didn't dare send it back for reheating as we didn't want to wait another 20 minutes to eat. In spite of temperature the food was good but it was clear our server needed assistance....she allowed that the private room next to us was originally booked for 8 and 14 showed up and that she was doing her best. We understand this is a busy place but they're charging a premium for their food, so the service should reflect this. On this occasion they failed. When our server should have been getting our food, dessert, check....she was clearing a table from an adjacent party. Causing us to wait even longer. I generally don't hesitate to speak with a manager during experiences such as this but I didn't want that discussion during my wife's birthday dinner. I paid the check and didn't tip much-which I hate to do...but in this case it was warranted. Winston grill is a good or should I say a great steakhouse. The pictures I've posted would show you that they have a variety of food besides steak. The jam jam shrimp and calamari appetizers was really good. My meal was the ribs, a nice full rack of baby back ribs in which the meat fell right off the bone. The server presents them on a silver tray and as they describe the days offerings, you just can't decide. I go here for the dessert! I've done the Winston's thing for YEARS. Way longer than I would like to admit. Hubs and I used to live pretty close to it so we have seen it go through many changes, but many things that have stayed the same. It consistently has pretty great tasting food, even if the service comes and goes. Recently, I noticed that the chef has been changing up the menu and specials available each day for lunch. It has been fun tasting different fare, but when I fall in love with something, I don't necessarily get to have it again. Most recently, I had a cold orzo salad with cucumbers, mango, and lots of veggies. It was, without a doubt, one of the best salad I have ever had. With dessert, you cannot go wrong. At my last trip here, my lunch buddy asked for the pastry chef to come out so he could tell her how wonderful the breads and desserts were. She was so grateful and made me really happy about frequenting Winston's. They have a pretty significant wine menu, and in recent years, the servers, at least during the day, have been superb, and on their game! read more

In a decade of living in the triangle, I've never been to Winston's. It's one of my friend's favorite places in Raleigh so, when I suggested brunch, she insisted we go. Apparently, and as I quickly learned, it's another location with maddening Sunday brunch, so she made a 12:15pm reservation. I arrived about 10 minutes early and our table was ready pretty quickly. Winston's seems to have an old money allure about it. The men are in jackets and all the ladies are dressed up. Most of the diners are much older, as well. Despite the busyness, it was peaceful and there was a slow pace to it. Our table was a booth one level above most of the rest of the tables. We were able to clearly see some of the rest of the dining room, view the kitchen with its copper awning and copper pots'n pans hanging down, and take in the art. It seems that the owners have a nice collection of private art all over the walls. We each ordered a mimosa. I thought that $8.50 for a Sunday brunch mimosa was a bit steep. We also each ordered the Belgian waffle, which game with a garnish of strawberries and a couple slices of bacon. It seemed as if part of one of my bacon pieces got hijacked. They need to do some work on their menu. Nowhere did I see that the waffle came with a side of bacon, and that shouldn't be implied, but there is also not a listing of brunch sides. One pleasant surprise: before our meal arrived, so did a pair of delicious blueberry muffins! I went to Winston Grille for brunch with a large group of friends. The atmosphere is truly wonderful and includes intimate sections and areas where large groups can sit and interact. Our waitress was very easy going and knowledgeable of the menu and the dishes. She had fantastic recommendations based on her tastes and what customers preferred. She made sure our group had everything they needed in a timely and yet relaxed manner. I had the Sesame Tuna Salad and of course ate a piece of the bread. The bread is some of the best baked bread I've ever had. The Sesame Tuna Salad was a nice sized portion and very balanced. The tuna was cooked to perfection and the sauces were amazing. I moved from Raleigh up to Connecticut eight years ago, and I drove by this place just about every day. So my wife & I were on vacation visiting the folks, and at the end of a long day, we couldn't figure out where to go. We just knew we wanted to go somewhere close by, so that's where Winston's came in. We certainly were not expecting a five star experience, but as with many other things in life, you often get some of the best things when you least expect them. The atmosphere is really top notch. From the seemingly intimate sections to the sconces to the stylish open-air kitchen, everything was quite nice- but not at all pretentious. I felt at home in my khaki shorts and short sleeve button down. The waiter was without a doubt the best one we've ever had. Friendly, attentive but not smothering, knowledgeable of the menu. He also had perfect timing as far as bringing salads, refills, etc. Just a nice, courteous guy who seemed really interested in how we were enjoying our meal. And did we ever. It started with our salads. My wife had their garden salad with the best bleu cheese dressing she has ever had. And I had an ample Caesar salad with great croutons, shredded parmesan (not the crap you get on the store shelf, but the real deal) and an outstanding caesar dressing. You could tell these dressings were made from scratch. And now, the entrees... I ordered the Chicken Penne, which consisted of grilled chicken mixed with penne in a white wine tomato sauce with garlic, shallots & mozzarella. It just screamed homemade, and the mixture of ingredients was really awesome. Ingredients I've had many times before, but never quite like that. My wife and my mother had the Salmon Cashew, a nice filet of salmon coated with crushed cashews drizzled with a lemon beurre blanc (white wine & butter). I don't know about them, but it was the tastiest variation of salmon I've ever tried. Just scrumptious. The vegetable medley was great, rather than the bland dreck you get at a lot of places, and the rice was good as well. And the desserts, OH the desserts... The three of us tackled the Strawberry Shortcake and Bananas Foster. The first one kinda surprised me... We didn't get the biscuit-style shortcake you usually see, but a layered cake with strawberries and something that resembled yellow cake. It wasn't the best I ever had, but the homemade scoop of vanilla ice cream was fantastic, and along with the fresh whipped cream & strawberries, it made for a great dessert. The Bananas Foster left my wife speechless. it consisted of homemade ice cream between two pieces of puff pastry just swimming in a banana-laden bourbon caramel sauce from the Gods. Took my boyfriend here for his birthday. I've passed this place many times and that day i just had to pick a restaurant for him. We both couldn't decide so I just picked here. He is more of a restaurant guru than me and hadn't been here. He loved it and said I did good and he definitely wants to come back. I was happy because I'm always the one who can't decide. Anyway the service was the best I've had in a long time. Im so use to mediocre service I had forgotten what it was like to have great great service. Great prices. Great atmosphere i like the semi private spaced out aspect, where you're not up on strangers. Food was great. I had to beg my bf for his food because his was soooo good too. I will preface my review by saying this: we went on Mother's Day, around 7:30, without reservations. Rookie mistake. They were pretty slammed but did manage to work us in relatively quickly. We didn't have to wait very long to give our drink orders and get water and some warm rolls, which were good but nothing special-which is sort of a concise way to sum up my opinions on Winston's as a whole at this point. We ordered calimari to share as an appetizer, and either the oil wasn't hot enough or it sat too long waiting to be picked up, because it was visibly greasy. The squid wasn't overcooked and the three sauces it came with were good, but not a revelation. Definitely found much better calimari elsewhere in Raleigh. We did then have to wait for awhile for our entrees. Again, we picked the worst day and time to go, so that's on us. Our waitress was very friendly and apologized repeatedly but when the kitchen gets slammed, not much anyone can do about it. We weren't in a huge hurry so it wasn't a big deal. My husband ordered the shrimp and grits which were very good. The grits still had some texture and hadn't been cooked into mush like some places seem to do. For $15 it was a reasonable portion: enough for my husband (who can out-eat pretty much anybody) to be very full and still have leftovers for lunch the next day. While the portion size was good, for $15 I'm expecting something a little more "fine dining-y", though. Some more interesting flavor combos or use of some fresh herbs or a sauce to jazz it up a bit. I ordered the crab cake salad, which was $14.50. I was debating between the shrimp and grits and the salad, and in retrospect I should have gone with the grits or tried something else on the menu. For $14.50 I got ONE crabcake on my salad. And not a large one either. The crabcake also had a lot of filler, which was very disappointing. For an entree salad I'd expect either two crabcakes of that quality or one larger one with mostly lump crab. It tasted fine, your basic generic crab cake. The salad also contained mango- all of which was under-ripe. It was a bowl of disappointment, really. The one saving grace was the citrus-cilantro dressing, which was very good-but again, nothing revelatory. I'm a pretty handy cook and managed to reverse-engineer the dressing a few nights later on my own at home. We saw the dessert tray go around, and I heard the waitress sing the praises of the key lime pie, which is one of my favorite things ever, but at that point we were so underwhelmed and already out $50 for an uninspiring meal, so we went to Menchie's instead--where they managed to have very ripe mango to top off my fro-yo. For $5 I got MORE ripe mango on my yogurt than I got on my $14.50 salad. So, will we go back? Maybe. I think part of our underwhelmedness (which is totally a word, okay?) may have stemmed from the fact that we picked a crappy time to try them out. That being said, I won't be rushing back, and definitely will be trying something else on the menu that is more appropriately priced. The thing is, this place has a lot of competition in a small area in terms of what their menu consists of, but is priced more like a fine-dining establishment. For only $5 to $10 dollars more we've had amazing meals at Mandolin, for example. I think Winston's needs to figure out what they want to be. If they want to be fine dining, they need to up the quality and spruce up the menu a little bit. If they want to be more of a casual sit-down place--like a non-chain version of an Applebee's--then they need to reprice things. At the moment they are trying to be two things at once and not doing well with either, in my opinion. Maybe I'll head back some day and give it another shot- but it isn't at the top of my list. read more
