Best bread in the area. In park slope, winner is an icon from when they first opened. There is always a line for their bread, and since they started making sandwiches, the line has gotten even longer. Their fried chicken sandwich is my favorite sandwich in Brooklyn. So first, let me start by saying I went to their space upstairs for an event and they catered the event. Secondly I traveled all the way from west Harlem for this place. I kept saying I hope this is good and I'm glad to say it was delicious and surpassed my expectations. The food was delicious, fresh and flavorful. Also the texture was perfect with pizza. We had the Cesar salad which was so good, it was fresh and the dressing was a great balance flavorful but not too heavy. I liked the addition of olives in the salad, it gave it a nice burst of flavor. The pizzas were amazing, it was my first time having clam pizza. I must say, I loved it and the flavor was really good. The clam and the pizza was well cooked not chewy. The other pizzas were also really good. The service was amazing but we served ourselves. The timing of the courses were perfect. Came here on a weekday to pick up some pastries for breakfast. At around 10:20 am there was no wait to order, although people had started to line up to place orders for lunch (that began at 10:30). I got three pastries to split between me and a friend: - Cinnamon roll: very much the quintessential cinnamon roll-- not the fluffiest but still a delight to eat, especially once warmed up. - Brown butter chocolate chip muffin: Weirdly enough the tiniest muffin ever-- it was tasty but I think unless I was looking for a teeny treat I wouldn't order this again - Sourdough croissant: delicious, buttery with that sourdough tang. Worth trying at least once! Overall Winner is a hit and good spot to grab some sweet treats from. No indoor seating so come when the weather is ok or know where you are taking it to go. read more

Great bakery! In park slope around a lot of fun shops if you're looking for some fuel while shopping around. We got their curry tomato soup which was so flavorful & I loved the twist on a classic tomato soup. We also got their grilled cheese on sourdough (which came with a pickle). It was a great lunch! Had to try their focaccia, we got jalapeño cheddar & I loved that some of the jalapeños had a good kick to them. I would go back just for that focaccia! Stopped by on a Thursday afternoon to grab a few sandwiches with some friends as we've been wanting to try this bakery for quite some time. The line moved quickly for ordering and then took about 10 minutes to get our sandos (not a bad wait time at all!). Definitely a take out operation, as there didn't appear to be any seating inside (or order through a window). We got a rick + morty (mortadella sando), a Cubano (was really fantastic), and a friend chicken sando (didn't try but friend seemed to enjoy) For the price point (mine came to $20 total), I was a little underwhelmed with the amount of each ingredient put into the sandwich. I pay the same price at other NYC institutions for similar quality, but the sandwiches are 2x. I'd definitely come back for the loaves, but may skip the sandwiches next time. read more

So you know what they say about the people who feel the need to declare boldly what they are... they tend to not be that thing. (Is this actually a belief?) Anyway, naturally, I was walking up to this place thinking that if Winner was actually a winner they didn't really have to call themselves Winner. You know? But turns out they absolutely did because if I weren't straight up processing that whole thing, I don't know if I would have found Winner in a sea of other competitive Park Slope establishments. Winner did put a substantial dent in that theory, by the way. Apparently it's not entirely true. Some people just like to boast :). So about the winning goods...It was late afternoon and I was looking for a snack so I settled on a pretzel (came highly recommended), a maple chocolate cookie, and an oat chai. First of all, I'm not even a pretzel fan but I do believe in taking risks. Because I had declared that I would warm it up "later," the person at the counter recommended no cheese. Ready to be like "I still don't care for pretzels," I un-enthusiastically took a bite as soon I made it back to my abode, only to become a convert in seconds. I didn't even have it warm! Apparently I really like Winner's pretzels. It was not overly salted. And you can really taste the freshness and quality ingredients. They are alledgedly dipped in lye. Anyway, I could only imagine how elevated the cheese could have made it. Following that thought, I had the greatest idea to eat the maple choc chip cookie concurrently with the pretzel. It was sweet and salty and ridiculous and it worked. A winning combo! 10/10 recommend. Sorry pretzel purists. You know, however, what was more like a bronze medallist or deserving of no placement at all? The oat chai. Couldn't really taste any spices. Just tasted like warm milk. All in all, Winner is worth a visit and I would try more pastries and maybe actual lunch if I'm in the neighborhood. At the very least, I would definitely order their pretzel! read more

I had enjoyed Winner for years - actually since opening and reading a NY Times review. Purchased a whole chicken tonight after not doing this recently (still have enjoyed their sandwiches). Was shocked and disappointed in the decline in quality from the tasty, luscious and juicy chicken as was. This chicken was cooked badly, dry & rubbery and I hate to say, suspect it wasn't freshly made this afternoon. I am a chicken maven, both cooking myself and eating from various ready made venues in neighborhood. This one truly didn't stand up to any of the above, especially at its price point. Next day update: After writing to Winner about my experience through their web page - I received a kind response. They will refer to their culinary department as well as offering to return money to my credit card. I am impressed by how they responded, restoring a sense of integrity in a venue I have admired. I used to like the Banh Mi sandwich but they didn't even toast the bread what's up with that?

This is a desecration of the legacy of one of the greatest sandwiches ever invented: the Banh Mi. I will start off by saying I don't think they were aiming for authenticity, nor was I expecting it. But this was, on top of missing nearly every mark a Banh Mi sets out to hit, not good. 1. The bread was completely wrong: a soft hoagie, not even cut in half, just one long log of soft bread (banh mi is unanimously a baguette sandwich. Must be crunchy and crusty). 2. There is no "protein" on this sandwich. It's just the fixings. If you wanted to keep it vegan, You couldn't add sautéed mushrooms? Tofu? Roasted Cauliflower??? 3. Fixings: The vegetables were not pickled enough, the cucumbers were cut in slices rather than spears which meant no crunch, and there was nowhere near enough cilantro OR jalapeño. The only positive I can draw from this sandwich is the smoked mushroom pate which is good for me as a non pork eater, but imo it was too smoky with no depth of flavor. read more

Heading out of NYC, thought we'd do a quick lunch at Winner as the noted Pete Wells called their beef patty as one of the top dishes of 2023. We were driving so parking is challenging. Somehow after circling the block once we found a spot a short walk away. Good and quick service. A nice space. Unfortunately, they were sold out of beef patties (1 PM). We ordered a fish patty, Ric & Morty, Midnight Club, and beef stew. All tasty except a bit too much arugula on the R&M and the patty was quite "fishy". Winner lives up to its name!! They make some of the best breads and baked goods in NYC. My favorite is their buckwheat sourdough. It's the best sourdough bread I've ever tasted and so unique. I try to come by on a weekly basis to buy this specific loaf. The service here is always great as the staff is helpful and nice. The ordering window is off to the side on 11th street and there are only outdoor tables. Great place to just chill have coffee and a pastry on a gorgeous day. I went here on a date with my girlfriend, we saw the long line and hoped it meant we were in store for something yummy! I'm not sure if I ordered wrong, or if I just didn't get there at a good time, but my iced mocha didn't taste like coffee, or sweet, or anything. It actually tasted sour. My girlfriend got the Arnold Palmer and said it didn't really taste pleasant either, no sweetness to balance the bitterness. The cookie was good, but so are the many other cookies in the area. My kids and I stopped by on a chilly Saturday afternoon in November on our walk home and oooooh so glad we did. At first we were bummed because they were sold out of cookies and a majority of pastries. But then the cashier suggested an almond croissant. Now I love me some chocolate croissants so I was pretty hesitant but my kids were willing so I got one in case they didn't like it and two hot chocolates. The croissants are huge and oh my god we each took a bite and it's like I went straight to heaven! The kids devoured it and I went back on the line and got two more along with two baguettes. I waited patiently in line on a random Monday afternoon at 3PM to buy a slice of the squash and sage focaccia bread ($3.75) and a traditional sourdough loaf ($9). The wait and hefty prices were well worth it. The focaccia had a perfect crust as well as a soft, chewy, and airy middle. The flakes of red pepper and sea salt added bite to the sweet squash and subtle sage flavor. The sourdough was probably the best I've ever had. Light and springy inside a solid crust, it was bread epitomized. The woman working at Winner was also incredibly friendly and kind. She allowed me to use a credit card despite not hitting the $15 minimum. Nearly all the pastries were sold out, so I will definitely be retuning earlier in the day to try a chocolate croissant. read more

Came here on a recommendation of a friend and this place was busy with a line several people long late morning. It is a popular lunch spot from what I hear. I had a scone which was more like a cross between a cake and a cookie. Flat , moist and very sweet - not at all the texture of a traditional scone. Tasty but definitely not as expected. I had heard good things about the cookies too and tried two different ones, chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin walnut - the latter also had coarse salt in it a bit unexpected. The bread and pastries at Winner must be good, because no matter the day of the week they seem to sell out early, even too soon for folks who are determined to get there at a time you might expect them to have some left. I've salivated over photos of their chocolate croissant and coffee coffee cake but at this point have only had the good fortune of trying one of their weekly Friends & Family meals where they feature the menu of a different restaurant/chef. This one was from 232 Bleecker, the fine dining concept from the Dig team that is one of my favorite restaurants in New York. For $18, I received a salad and big hunk of lasagna. I also added on dips and a slice of date cake for dessert. Everything was absolutely fantastic, especially the amazing einkorn lasagna with crispy edges that gives my homemade lasagna a run for its money, ten times over. For such a satisfying meal from the likes of lauded chefs like Suzanne Cupps, who previously worked at Gramercy Tavern and Untitled, F&F at Winner is one of the best deals in the city. I hope one day I arrive early enough for a pastry or ten, but until then you can find me taking advantage of their Friends & Family meals, the most affordable way to fine dine this side of Brooklyn. read more

I have wanted to try Winner after hearing glowing reviews and I finally got the opportunity to check it out. I sat in their outdoor seating around lunch time on a weekday and had a really great experience. I was a little discouraged they might be closed because of construction as i walked down 7th avenue, but there is an ordering window and seating. The BLT was amazing.
