There are 2 main ferry companies Winjet and Ultramar that travel to/from Playa del Carmen PDC and Cozumel (they also have other routes that can be found online). We walked to the dock area and purchased tickets in person. There are a lot of folks trying to sell you tickets but go to the ferry company window and buy the tickets there. Each ticket costs around 260 pesos or $16.50 and they take VISA. The first PDC ferry departs around 8am. Our departure times were not on a set schedule but the Winjet and Ultramar alternate departures so do not buy a roundtrip ticket or you could end up waiting an hour for your specific company return ferry - the cost is pretty minimal to buy 2 one way tickets vs a roundtrip ticket. The boat ride takes around 40 minutes but there is inevitability some wait time. At 7pm, it took 3 full ferries to accommodate the return crowds from Cozumel to PDC. There are bathrooms on the ferry and a snack counter.

There's probably not much positive things to say about Winjet except to avoid taking the first and the last ferry as those ferries are going to be jam packed. The last ferry that left from Cozumel was supposed to leave at 7:00pm actually left late at 7:35pm. I suppose that social distancing is not an option when riding these ferries as most if not all of the seats in the ferry were taken. Considering that they had signs to social distance, they definitely were hypocrites to the idea when passengers are packed like sardines next to each other. I think the worst part is when people started to get off the ferry, many people started to push and shove to get out the boat which is totally inconsiderate of others. Have some common decency and wait your turn to get out of the boat like everyone else. It appears from my tickets that the ticket to Cozumel was $222.00 MXN and the ticket back to Playa del Carmen was $220.01 MXN.

This is one of two ferry companies that take passengers from Playa del Carmen to the island of Cozumel. The other is Ultramar (yellow color). Since covid, they are alternating the days they run. So if Winjet runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday that week, Ultramar will be running Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The ferry was pretty comfortable and took only about 45 minutes. However, if you are the paranoid type, they are not really practicing covid safety protocols. The ferries were pretty crowded and I did not see them sanitizing anything. Make sure you buy tickets only from the official ticket office that is located right next to the boat - the round trip price is only $25 US. There are scalpers and other non official ticket offices further away that pretend to be selling official tickets.

Winjet is a ferry that transports passengers between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen. My husband and I have been passengers multiple times. Our cruise ships chartered the ferry, so we did not have to purchase tickets. For both trips, the seats felt comfortable. Some seats were indoors, and other seats were outdoors with breezy air. The employees served us well and spoke some English. Many years ago, the sea was extremely wavy, and for the only time in my life, I got very seasick, but thankfully a restroom was available for me to use. Most recently, in 2026, I did not feel sick at all (yay!). We arrived at our destinations on time. read more

Took the ferry from Cozumel to Playe del Carmen as part of a cruise ship excursion. Trip out was fine, it was a nice day, and I enjoyed the outdoor seating, although the hard bench seats were not the best for rough seas. Our tour guide rushed us to the port to make it on the 3:45 ferry back across to Cozumel. We made it on time and boarded, but then we just sat there. Our excursion was supposed to be back in Cozumel by 4:30. We didn't start moving towards Cozumel until 4:22. Lots of people were getting seasick, but that's not really the fault of the company, if you get seasick you probably shouldn't be on a ferry or any other boat. Ferry did not make it to Cozumel until 5:05. By the time we got off and through security, it was almost 5:30. Not cool when we were originally supposed to be back with enough time to get ready for our 5 pm dinner reservations. read more
A satisfactory means of traveling between Cozumel and Playa Del Carmel. Staff is polite and seem competent but minimal English. read more
Nice ride from cozumel to playa la carmen. Really wish they had wifi available for purchase on the ferry. One of the workers said no WiFi for groups and wifi tix can only be purchased from main office. read more

This is such a convenient way to get to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen, but bring your Dramamine. I was hoping it would be a positive part of my Mexican experience. I pictured myself sitting in the open air taking in the rays while watching for land and shark fins. That's not the case, You sit in what resembles a large airplane hull inundated with ads and waves. I'm not saying I wouldn't do it again; visiting Cozumel for 15 bucks is pretty darn impressive! read more
Fast service open as at 08:30 last ferry is at 08:00pm Boat ride is around 30-40 minutes. Please don't fall for the make shift booth at the to the right of the mermaid statues as you need to go all the way into the ferry terminal for tickets. read more

We purchased round trip ferry tickets from Cancun to Cozumel. Rushed back returned our rental car to make our return ferry from Cozumel to Cancun to find out they had cancelled the ferry due to low tickets, no refunds and 1 1/2 wait until next ferry run. Wow, they don't tell you that when you purchase your ticket now do they!!! We had to eat the cost and buy new one way in order to get back to Cancun in time for our dinner plans. Thanks a lot Winjet you really know how to prioritize your customers! read more

Our ferry on the way to Playa del Carman was so choppy I thought we'd all be sick! There were few seats left and an employee had to ask riders to move: some weren't very accommodating. It was possible to check luggage for later pickup but I guess some aren't willing to do so. Boarding took forever and disembarking was treacherous: the gangplank was sliding and moving, but staff tried to help each person. If there is another option for ferrying, try that if you can. read more

If you were trying to decide between the two ferry companies that run between Playa Del Carmen and Cozumel, like I was? You want the OTHER one. Both of them are "fine" and comparably priced to get where you're going. Pricing is fair, and they offer a discount for locals. All good. But Winjet looks and feels old, with very few outside seats. The newer-looking Ultramar boats have multiple outside deck levels, and you certainly came to Riviera Maya for the outside. Boarding was laboriously slow and took a solid 30-40 minutes to load a boat that arrived after the scheduled DEPARTURE of my ferry. Luggage load and unload process is chaotic and slow, although no added charge for an airline-sized checked bag. So that's a plus. Also didn't like: windows are tinted but not enough to keep the inside cool in the daytime sunlight. Upstairs AC was pretty spotty. Windows are also too high up versus the seats (at least upstairs), so even a tall person can barely see outside. Seats are fine but not really comfortable. Other concerns: The ferry wallows in even mild swells, like it was built from a barge. US-style fast ferry, this is not. That makes it slow, and probably uncomfortable if there's any chop on the water. Right now, the two ferry companies alternate which days they run, so even days you get Ultramar, odd days you get Winjet. Winjet feels like an old bus. Totally functional, but you probably want the fresher Ultramar. read more

A gentle breeze was all it took to cancel the ride back to Playa Del Carmen at 5pm. The last boat was at 9 and the man had assured us that all rides were cancelled until morning. Not knowing my wife speaks fluent Spanish, he makes a comment to his coworker about my wife being a "stupid whore" (gentile translation) after she asked about a refund. So we spend a ton of money rebooking hotels and flights only to see the 7pm boat leave from our overpriced last minute hotel room. Swimming the channel is a better option especially if you have a wife or daughter with you. read more

Cruise excursion required us to take the ferry to Playa Del Carmen. Wow, what a ride.. Seats both upstairs and inside in good shape. Staff offered sale of drinks, waters, and snacks. There are hawkers for several souvenirs. There are bathrooms onboard. Boarding is treacherous as the plank to get on moves violently with the waves. Be prepared to hang on and move quick. The ferry ride itself is a wild ride. Incredibly choppy, and the boat rocks non-stop the whole way. It was so bad the staff have rolls of plastic bags for seasickness if you need it. Ugh! The way back was easier, as sitting downstairs helped minimize the rocking. We got there safely though read more

Just took the r/t from playa del Carmen to Cozumel. Worst rides ever. A/C broken. Single hull boat so it bobs like a cork in water. If you have anyone in your party that gets remotely motion sick, take pills because they are puking, all workers carry barf bags as proof of the sh*t ride. Diesel stank. They load so many people there are not enough seats. Old equipment. Be careful buying tix too, there are companies selling for twice the price next to the company kiosk so you can skip the long ass line. Unsure if that's their fault or not, I would bet they are. Take Ultramar they have catamarans so the ride is much smoother. read more
One of the two fast ferries between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. 170 pesos for one-way trip. Boarding process was chaotic, funneled through 'security' which seemed pointless. Large bags were taken prior to boarding and a claim ticket given in return. Ferry departed on time. Onboard seats were fair, ferry in general very well used. Arrived to Cozumel on time as well. De-boarding was equally chaotic but successful. Dropped at ferry point in downtown Cozumel. Easy to snag a taxi from this point to where you would like to go. Not sure if one ferry is any better than the other company; Winjet got us where we needed to be without anything special, but also nothing terrible. read more

Late, missing and lying about it! If you go to Cozumel on Winjet, you cannot rely on a return trip based on the published schedule on the back of your ticket. Three of us showed up at 3:30 to board the 4pm ferry from Cozumel to Playa Del Carmen, but the 4pm ferry didn't show up, so we came back for the 5pm which was at capacity, so we were told to wait and another boat would come to get us for a 5pm departure. Another boat came, and then left without us. It pulled up to a different doc across the bay and took a different group! In the meantime we missed our scheduled transportation in Playa Del Carmen back to our hotel, so when we finally got back at 7pm we had to take a $50 US cab ride. Total bummer and no explanation or apology from Winjet!! read more

People loading bags forced us to give them our backpacks, almost no outside seating, and runs up to an hour late. I wouldn't get on another one of i could avoid it. Ultramar runs on opposite days and unfortunately we had to take this one. read more

If you require a ferry between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel do not use Winjet, use any other company! Was told the 3 o'clock ferry was cancelled and to take the 4oclock. No boat arrived at 4:00, waited for the 5oclock ferry, no boat at 5 either, told 6. It should be noted this is a 35 minute ferry ride so they knew each time that the ferry was not coming but kept quiet, there by not allowing anyone enough time to purchase tickets from the other companies. No refunds given. read more

I would give 0 if I could. Driver would not leave without 1 missing group so we had to wait 30 minutes in an exhaust smelling fairy instead of taking us and coming back to get them. Would not recommend! read more
