We booked the ferry round trip tickets from ultramar website for $35 USD very nice service you need to get your tickets scanned at the ticket counter as soon as you reach the port at playa del Carmen (there's no parking here you will get a parking spot 10 minutes walking distance before coming to the port search on google maps and you will find directions while you're there the parking costed us $10 USD for all day) After scanning your tickets you can go upstairs to the ferry station it's highly advisable to reach 30-40 minutes prior to your departure time. The ferry has restrooms, a bar (not complimentary), and first class and premium class seats. The premium class is second floor uncovered with ocean views and first class is first floor covered and air conditioned. The service was entertaining there was a guy who was playing good music while we were on the ride! And the crew or staff waves you goodbye when you leave for your next stop! read more

Heading to Cozumel for a day trip, so decided on going by ferry to get us to the island then on to a private vessel for exploration. Being a catamaran hull I really thought we would hit a higher cruising speed, as the seas are a bit choppy and the additional speed would help to stabilize the journey. My mom and I took this from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen. Go directly to the WinJet desk or purchase them online. In Cozumel you enter in the ground level, go through security sen up the escalato a. They theb scan your pass and you can board immediately. When you board the boat you have an option of inside or outside. We opted for outside right in front of the on board entertainment.. The onboard entertainment was absolutely wonderful and a welcome distraction during the journey. The staff was also very nice. This experience was markedly better than our experience in Winjet (see review) and we will take Ultramar from now on. To get from the port to our hotel, we had to take a taxi for approximately $8 one way. You do have to navigate through the mall to arrive at the tax stand. If you want to get to your destination in style, I'd say this is the best option. read more

This place sucks. If you can avoid using the services from this company I would. Andres Eduardo Diaz sold us tickets in person and assured us, several times, that we would be able to return at 3pm. Unfortunately he wasn't able to do his only job correctly and when we arrived to the ferry at 2pm they informed us the next return trip wouldn't be until 4pm. This wouldn't have been a big deal but the cruise ship leaves at 5pm and we had informed Andres of this when we bought tickets from him. They didn't offer any form of resolution or compensation. Fortunately we were able to get tickets with Winjet and make it back to our cruise in time. The tickets were cheaper and the ferry was much nicer. 10/10 would not recommend. read more

From the cruise ship yout you start off with a short walk from the boat along the pier to the Ultramar ferry. There are guards and dogs checking you out to make sure you are not bringing anything bad into the port. You let them know what excursion and they tell you which ferry to hop on. It is about a 30-35 minute ride from Cozumel once you get started, they go about 20 knots, pretty smooth sailing a few bumps here and there. There are TVs with music videos and other things playing and they offer drinks and snacks for purchase. The ride was smooth that day and with the TV going it did not seem to be 30 minutes long. read more

Functional but severely lacking in safety and efficiency. No passenger safety briefing before getting underway. No verbal instructions for finding exits. While seated in the first-class cabin no visible life jackets, although I do know they're under the seats from my previous trip. The upper deck first class cabin it's a bit of a death trap. Why is this thing SO slow to board?! It's 3:30 and the shuttle time is 4pm. Hundreds of people are forced to stand outside in a rat maze waiting to board! The ferry sits dockside, empty. I could've rented a boat and already been in Playa from Cozumel an hour before we actually boarded. For such a high tech looking vessel, it doesn't run very efficiently. Inside the "indoor" seating which is supposed have AC, it felt as though the system couldn't keep up or they were just not using it to it's full capacity. We finally left at 4:08. I asked an attendant that spoke no English if I could stand outside. She brought back a man that told me there were no other seats available. A miserably hot ferry ride! We used this company to take a ferry to Cozumel. We bought the "first class" tix for $2 USD more per person which supposedly gets you to the front of the line but we did not experience anyone moving us up after looking at our tickets. But once you board there is a separate section with air conditioning-freezing cold- and a separate section on top where they offer drinks. I thought they were free but at the end the woman came to collect payment. 4 stars for leaving on time both ways and for the musical entertainment on the way to Cozumel. In December 2018 tix were $23 per person. Price is round trip. They post the price so you know you are not being charged on how much they think you will pay. I like that a lot. We used this ferry system to travel from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel during our "Excursion Travel" arrangement to the Atlantis Submarine ride. It was raining and the water a bit choppy, but still a pretty smooth ride all the way there and during the return ride back. The seats were comfortable enough to relax in. They also have a refreshment stand with snacks, drinks and even cocktails! Flat screen TV's are displayed so you can get up to the minute weather reports, destination times, and safety information. On our journey back to Playa del Carmen, we were lucky enough to get on their newest and more modern ferry boats! It was beautifully designed and more luxurious then expected! But I suspect that since it wasn't very full, we just happened to wander into the first class section. They didn't kick us out, so it turned out to be an even nicer ride all the way back! I enjoyed using the Ultramar ferries, which seem to be one of the more popular water crossing transportation companies of the Cancun area. The employees have always been helpful and efficient in getting us to the places we wanted to visit! Taking the ferry somewhere is a MUST to really enjoy the local flavors of the areas! read more

Ferries are fine, no issues with the boats ride. However we were tricked into adding a rental car when we purchased our ferry ticket and that was a complete scam. They claim to give you a discounted price for a rental place called Roosters and the cars there are totally falling apart. We got a a complete piece of crap. Excellent service, both in transport and luggage handling. I'm not sure about the other ferry service since these guys are such good salespeople. What I can tell you is that this one is comfy and relatively quick from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel -- and back. We bought the "first class" tickets, although I don't think that's necessary. (I think it only lets you skip the line a little.) On the way over, we were on an older boat and sat outside. On the way back (see photos) it was more modern and comfortable. On both trips, the crew handled our slew of luggage with care. The old boat is a 2-star experience. The new boat is around 4 stars ... hence my three stars for the rating. Followed the advise of our hotel to buy a round trip ticket day of. We were advised that some will take advantage of people needing a return ticket and gouge the price. This was one of only two ferry lines operating during our stay in Playa. We tried this one day and Winjet another day. This one has a top level with seats which feels great when the ferry is in motion. I preferred Ultramar to winjet. Seemed to be completely oversold, so much that regular passengers were allowed to sit in First class. Different story on the 1300 return to PDC. A CLEARLY designated First Class line and Priority boarding. First class seating was about 1/4 the size of the first leg. Only 6 First class riders on the return. read more

My family and I went to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen. Upon exiting the ferry I asked an employee the time for the last ferry, I was told 9pm. We got to the marine at 8pm to find out the last ferry was at 8. At the marine their was a sign for the last ferry stating 7pm. Obviously there is a big confusion on the times. In the back of the tickets they have different times for different days, no wonder the employees too are confused. I was very concerned because I had my kids with me. The employees at the desk did not want to hear me out and were not concerned at all, they just kept on counting their money. I asked to speak to a supervisor and I was told there was no one. Two employees tried closing their window on me and the other asked me if I could read when I asked for him to point out the customer service number for me. Two other families were also told the wrong times and an employee accused us all of plotting to say we got the wrong info. We didn't even know each other. One of the ladies, grabbed my hand and scratched me when I took her pen from her counter after she refused to let me borrow it. I wanted to write their names down. And then the male employee ( Carlos B.) threatens to call the police on me all while my kids are watching. I'm still very upset about this incident. Bought from these guys at the pier right past the Hilton/ Panama Jack resort--past the international flags. We bought an Island Hopper so we could go from Playa to Cozumel and back one day and the next day from Playa to Isla Mujeres and back the next day. Carlos was SO helpful! The tickets were worth every penny. Prompt pickup and dropoff. NICE boats that were air-conditioned. Friendly staff that greeted/ helped English-speaking tourists with nothing but smiles and laughter. Live music. Comfy seats. What more could you ask for? Carlos marked on our maps where to go, what to see, where to get mopeds and carts, where the good "hidden" beaches are and so forth. The advice was invaluable! We had a blast BOTH days. We were so desperate to get some beach time as the resort we were staying at (Panama Jack Playa del Carmen) was so stinky with seaweed and had only 20 feet of shoreline that was surrounded by jagged rocks, I'm sure Carlos saw the misery in our faces and took pity on us. Luckily, he also pointed out some great restaurants on both islands so we could get away from the Panama Jack's GROSS food. Thank you, guys. You really saved our trip. read more

Well very inefficient they wait until the time to leave and build up a multi line que then try to load tons of people . This ship was sitting in dock for over an hour before the leave time . The 9 pm from Cozumel on 2-25 didn't even leave until 910. Not sure why you have a schedule if you don't follow it. And you pay for the faster service which is still 35 minutes not 20 as they advertise. Would definitely try the other service. read more

Never been on a vehicle ferry but what an amazing time. It take about an hour to get across to the mainland of Mexico. The ride was fun and beautiful. If you're going to hope around towns I recommend renting a vehicle it's definitely a lot cheaper than paying individually for ferry rides. We did the math with 5 people in our group and it come out less expensive to rent verses pay taxis or ferry. There is no Uber in Cozumel like there is Guadalajara. read more

If you're someone that gets seasick easily.. This ferry is not meant for you. For a boat this size, it moves quickly. I was stunned when we started to move. But I'm glad this ferry can take you from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel and back within 30 mins. The cost wasn't that bad at all. I saw a ton of people on this when when went. The boat has a ton of outdoor seating and some seating indoor. During the day, it was SO hot so I chose to sit inside. My co workers sat on the outside and said it felt really nice. I just hate heat in general. Both times we got on the boat - they had a live band playing and got the party started :P You can see everything from the sight of the ocean to the view of the cities. Absolutely beautiful. Oh - they sell alcohol on the boat. So wear your swimsuit (some people wore this right off the bat; you cannot and won't be allowed to jump off the boat), come on board, and be ready to enjoy different parts of Mexico! read more

You buy a tickets for a ferry and then when you arrive on time for your ticketed ferry they do not allow you on because they've allow everyone else who happened to be in line with tickets to later ferries on in your place. They tell you at the ticket counter it's for (said hour) ferry and then they don't let you on because you were more than 20 minutes early and they're filled the ferry with general public or walk-ons. And now boats are only every two hours so you're stuck. So much for wanting tourism and stimulating the Mexican economy during a pandemic. read more

Fast and friendly service to and from Cozumel. There are three parallel services and some advertising suggests a faster ride as a way to differentiate but with the open sea its best to focus on steady and slow as the boat gets roackin and people frequently end up with plastic bags in their hands (particularly kids). This service runs more frequently than the rest so pick as you will and AVOID ROUND TRIP purchases, it's just not needed and if you do that you could be stuck waiting for a ferry when you didn't have to. read more

Ultramar Playa Del Carmen employees have a scam and theft ring at the Playa Del Carmen ticket office. Buy two tickets and TWO different machines printed only ONE ticket. You can wait all day and the machine PRINTS only ONE SCAN. The first purchase i assumed the printed scan would be valid for two passengers. So at the security check and scan it was only ONE. The staff said need another ticket which was 4 minute walk. I stupidly assumed that I made the mistake. I bought two more one way tickets---guess what !!! Only a single scan was printed !!! A staff was there and i complained. Looking puzzled for a moment, then opened the machine and MAGIC !!! he pulled another ticket. I showed him, now i bought FOUR one way tickets with receipts BUT these machines printed only THREE. He asked which machine, i pointed, but he refused to open it and now ULTRMAR staff are thieves and robbers! Notice random people selling same scans on the sidewalks. One of mine will be there soon. We booked the Cozumel, Isla Mujeres package with Ultramar and these guys are great. They took us to and from Isla Mujeres while we were staying in Cancun. They made it so easy to travel to Cozumel. We actually eetr leaving Cancun and heading to stay in Coumel while traveling with a newborn. we had large bags and plenty of stuff. The package included transportation. We made the 4:00 ferry but our first-class ticket meant nothing because we were unable to sit in the first class area which was full of people that did not pay for first class. When I brought it to the staff's attention we were told we have to wait for the next Ferry. I would avoid this company like the plague! The facilities are dirty and run down though this is supposedly a new boat.
