Winjet is a ferry that transports passengers between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen…read more My husband and I have been passengers multiple times. Our cruise ships chartered the ferry, so we did not have to purchase tickets. For both trips, the seats felt comfortable. Some seats were indoors, and other seats were outdoors with breezy air. The employees served us well and spoke some English. Many years ago, the sea was extremely wavy, and for the only time in my life, I got very seasick, but thankfully a restroom was available for me to use. Most recently, in 2026, I did not feel sick at all (yay!). We arrived at our destinations on time.

Our tour guide rushed us to the port to make it on the 3:45 ferry back across to Cozumel. We made it on time and boarded, but then we just sat there. Our excursion was supposed to be back in Cozumel by 4:30. We didn't start moving towards Cozumel until 4:22. Lots of people were getting seasick, but that's not really the fault of the company, if you get seasick you probably shouldn't be on a ferry or any other boat. Ferry did not make it to Cozumel until 5:05. By the time we got off and through security, it was almost 5:30. Not cool when we were originally supposed to be back with enough time to get ready for our 5 pm dinner reservations.

It takes about 45 min to make the crossing. Inside the ferry is nice enough, but it was kinda warm. A couple of my rellies got mareada (seasick) bc of the heat and the movement of the boat. However, the employees were very considerate and offered bags and sympathy. On the return, we sat on top outside and had better results. One of my rellies waited til we were on the dock to get sick. The 4 ferry companies run like clockwork every hour on the hour to/from Playa to Cozumel. Take a look at which one has the best price, I believe the service is comparable. In this case our choice was Mexico Waterjets.

Because they offer basically the same service, leaving from the same place, at the same time, they seem interchangable. They might be, but I rode with WinJet twice and I liked the friendly workers who seemed happy to be working there, the organization, and the looping video (upbeat music, information, ads, Senor Frijole aka Mr. Bean, etc). We were lucky and got on right away. One time we bought tickets just eight minutes before departure without issue. Another time, we were ten minutes late and managed to board. $9 one way and $15 round trip (recommended) as of 2/19. Buy your tickets directly from orange Winjet booths and make sure you aren't in some timeshare. I thought the 35 minute ferry ride itself would be part of the fun, but I guess I'm getting old... The February waters were choppy and two days later I still feel like I'm bobbing.

My husband and I have visited this cruise terminal a couple of times, most recently in March 2026. Our cruise ships seemed to dock just fine, and I cannot recall experiencing any problems with disembarking or embarking our cruise ships. We did take ferries between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen, but Cozumel itself has beaches, wildlife, and more. I will write about the city of San Miguel de Cozumel in a separate review.

There's so much to see from the cruise ship when arriving and docking at the pier. The town of San Miguel de Cozumel is accessible from here. You can even visit Punta Langosta if you don't mind the long walk from Puerta Maya. The restroom facilities here are clean, or at least they were in the morning before leaving for our shore excursion. I think the only negative was walking through the long DF shop on the way back to the ship in the afternoon. They won't let you walk along the pier on the way back. You're trapped inside the building like a hostage once you start walking through the wall-to-wall crowds of people coming from both directions. We were so thankful to walk behind this big & tall dude who somehow parted the way through this sea of shoppers with ease. He didnt even realize it, but he became our offensive lineman in this game. Other than that, it was easy to get to where we wanted to go. The excursions were very appealing and organized. There are many photo ops along the way. The actual shopping village is more spread out. You won't even notice that there are 3 or 4 ships at port until you walk back to the ship. It was a beautiful first-time experience in Mexico!

There's a landscaped water feature area that's a haven for turtles and iguanas. I feel like the layout of the shops & restaurants are more spread out and spacious. I liked the shops here better. There's a Ron Jon Surf Shop and a Rogers Boots Shop (reminded my hubby of "No Country for Old Men"). I can't comment on the restaurants because we didn't try any of them. There is a Fat Tuesday, Three Amigos, and Panchos Backyard. I so wanted to stop for dessert and coffee at Banana & Company, but there's just never enough time. Hopefully there will be a next time. Our shore excursion was very well-organized here. We met our guide in front of Ron Jon's. She walked us to the taxi pickup area where we were whisked away to Barriecito. It was such a memorable experience. The taxi fare was part of the excursion, but it's actually a good price just to take a ride around the whole area. Honestly though, you really don't need an excursion here. There's a lot to see even if you decide to walk to Punta Langosta or venture out into San Miguel de Cozumel on your own. It was a fun port of call!

We booked a tour to a Mayan Village so just got a Mexican mango flavored popsicle super refreshing and hit the spot cuz it was HOT. I saw a cute Stitch Ohana hand painted wooden plaque on our way to the tour vehicle so on the way back to the ship found the booth and had it personalized. We had to be back on the ship if not I would have surely filled up my suitcase with more items here like footwear and handbags. The tour we took also stopped at a Tequila Factory and I saw leather goods across the street and by the ancient church but it didn't seem like we could stop to shop. Glad we got to buy a few hand made jewelry and pottery whistle at the Mayan Village. If we ever go to Cozumel again I'll choose to just leisurely enjoy Puerta Maya then return to the ship when I'd had enough.
