Who doesn't love an old historic battleship? Or at least the old game Battleship?…read more This is an informative and entertaining diversion. We spent around two hours here on the self-guided tour. There is a ton of (paid) parking in the lot so no concerns there. You can do the self-guided tour or they offer several guided tours for an additional fee. My guess is those guided tours are very good. We spoke with several of the volunteers onsite and generally, they were extremely knowledgeable about the ship. If you have mobility issues, the Iowa is not for you. Period. You will be climbing numerous ladders going both up and down. There is a hot dog stand on the ship that looked pretty good. It is named after the Iowa's canine mascot, Vicky. Overall, touring the ship was very interesting. Seeing the unbelievably massive guns in person is mind blowing. You do not realize their size until you see them in person. My only knock on the ship is the signage could be a little better. Sometimes you peek into various areas or rooms and you have no idea what you are looking at. This is well worth a visit, particularly if you enjoy military history. The Iowa (and its class of Iowa battlsehips) was a very important ship at one time. FYI, I am generally a fan of Groupon and the Battleship Iowa deal shows up often. At the time of our visit, the Groupon price was exactly the same as the price offered at the battleship entrance itself. (I think buying online on the Iowa website might have saved us a few dollars overall, if we had done that.)

My family and I went on this cruise last night, and we had an enjoyable experience! I had some…read moreconcerns based on the negative reviews I had read here, but we didn't have any problem finding a place to park or getting on the bus. There were so many volunteers all around us, that there was never a question about where we needed to go. The bus ride is a very short one on a traditional school bus. I actually enjoyed it! I do agree with some of the reviewers who have mentioned that it would be a more pleasant experience if they would skip the narration during the cruise, and play Christmas carols instead. The narrator on the boat was clearly reading from a script, and she obviously wasn't familiar with it, because she stumbled over her words quite a bit. The lights are beautiful, though, and while it's true that not every single house is decorated, there are many families that have gone to great lengths to create a fantastic display of lights! What I enjoyed the most was being on the water in such a peaceful setting! There weren't very many boats in the harbor, and that added to the relaxing ambiance. I would have given this experience a five-star rating, but I subtracted one star because of the narration. It wasn't too loud, so that was a plus. It's just that the narrative didn't add anything to the experience because it was simply a description of what was plainly obvious for all to see. One reviewer described the crowd as worse than Disneyland, but I'm happy to say that wasn't our experience. There were exactly 2 busloads of people on the boat, so after the cruise, half of us went on one bus, and the other half went on the other one. Both buses were there to meet us immediately after the cruise, so there was minimal waiting involved. Other reviewers have mentioned that it is important to be on the right side of the boat, so that's where we sat. We had a good view, but since the boat goes up one side of the channel and down the other, all of the houses can be seen from either side of the boat. We avoided the back of the boat because of the fumes coming out of the engine. There is a snack bar on board that sells reasonably-priced snacks and drinks. There is also a restroom on the boat. The only annoying thing we experienced had nothing to do with the operators of the cruise. I only mention it so that others may be more aware of the people around them and show consideration. There was a lady standing behind us who talked nonstop and very loudly to her friend about her travels, her vocational accomplishments, her home redecorating experience, etc. throughout the cruise. I couldn't help but wonder if she even realized that she was on a harbor cruise meant for relaxation and enjoyment of the Christmas lights. As her voice mixed with the voice of the narrator, it created an unpleasant cacophony that put a damper on the serenity of the evening. I know I could have moved away from her, but I chose to stay because I had a seat near the railing. I would highly recommend this cruise, mostly because it is an inexpensive way to get away from the hustle bustle of Christmas preparation, and the proceeds benefit a worthy organization that helps school children.

A few months ago, my husband was offered a career advancement opportunity which prompted him to consider and accept the hefty financial investment of becoming a helicopter pilot. Full transparency, he had initially began his flight training with a nearby competitor of Rogue which was an absolutely unpleasant and horrible experience. At the time, we did not know about Rogue's Long Beach location, so we were THRILLED when we learned about their secondary location to their Newport Beach location. From the moment we hopped on the call with Carrie, their angelic manager and coordinator, we knew we made the best decision to make the switch to Rogue Aviation early on. Rogue's values, standards, and commitment to excellence has been monumental to my husband's success. Every single member of the team, from Chief Pilot James Baker to CFI pilot James Cockrell; each have proven to be passionate, invested, and committed to their students success. The helicopter space is a relatively small community, and after intensive research on our part, it has revealed some intense truths--such as: ineffectively ran helicopter schools are notorious for offering poor quality instruction causing delays, financial strain, and even closing down mid licensing. Enrolling at Rogue has eliminated these concerns for us. I consider them the Ivy League of the helicopter training space. If you or a loved one is considering aviation as a career path, look no further. Rogue Aviation is bound to exceed your expectations.

Being allowed to take controls for various stages of flight (straight and level, attempting turns, etc.) and even trying my hand at hovering, was a VERY humbling experience, to say the least. It really puts things in perspective, to not only respect the aircraft, but also how skilled helicopter pilots truly are at multi-tasking, understanding complex aerodynamics and applying them to various stages of flight. I was very confident in CFI Tom Schneider's flying ability; and felt safe at all given segments of his flight/coaching. He had the patience of a saint, especially when coaching me on hovering! Additionally, CFI Tom (Schneider) is from Germany, accruing many of his flight hours (in both fixed wing and helicopter) in Europe, which brings an added benefit of his unique training/experience(s) from across the world to the aviation community here in the United States.
