How often do you have the opportunity to board a small open hangar craft and feel the wind blow by you as you soar over the world beneath you?! Not often at all. Mike was our pilot. He must be one of the friendliest guys I've ever encountered in quite some time. He gave us some nifty leather caps and a mic set so we could talk and hear from each other throughout the flight. You can tell Mike really gets a kick out of the joy others experience through flying with him. What I appreciated the most about this experience was how the plane was constructed. We went over the LA, Palos Verdes, and Long Beach area. Our pilot was great! (I believe his name was John?) He was very knowledgeable of the areas and even took us over our neighborhood! We had the option of bringing a picnic to enjoy in their lounge area before the flight, and they also gave us champagne which was a cute touch. Being allowed to take controls for various stages of flight (straight and level, attempting turns, etc.) and even trying my hand at hovering, was a VERY humbling experience, to say the least. It really puts things in perspective, to not only respect the aircraft, but also how skilled helicopter pilots truly are at multi-tasking, understanding complex aerodynamics and applying them to various stages of flight. I was very confident in CFI Tom Schneider's flying ability; and felt safe at all given segments of his flight/coaching. He had the patience of a saint, especially when coaching me on hovering! Additionally, CFI Tom (Schneider) is from Germany, accruing many of his flight hours (in both fixed wing and helicopter) in Europe, which brings an added benefit of his unique training/experience(s) from across the world to the aviation community here in the United States. Fast forward...I now have sealegs (which you don't need) so I booked a gondola to see the Naples Christmas lights to get a different view. The weekend before, friends and I walked the canal after the Belmont Shore Christmas Parade, so you can imagine the crowds of people going to see the Naples lights. The gondola is a much better way to see the lights. Booking online was simple. I received a confirmation email and in the email was what to expect. If you bring beverages, they provide a cooler/ice bucket with ice and cups. Connor was our gondolier and he was an absolute champ. He paddled through the canal so quickly that we had more time left on our cruise, so he took us out to the bay which was deserted, but peaceful. We had such a great time thanks to Connor! I highly recommend Gondola Getaway. Their staff is so friendly and knowledgeable. It's well worth the $267.50 (pre tip).
