**The Curious Case of the Missing Fries**…read more *A one-act dinner drama.* **Setting:** Buffalo Wild Wings, Marion, Indiana. Friday evening. The clock reads 6:30 PM. **Act I - Hope Takes a Seat** The curtain rises. A family is seated. Drinks are ordered and, after a reasonable wait, make their grand entrance. Spirits are high. Menus are closed with confidence. What could go wrong? **Act II - The Plot Thickens** Our waitress appears to be starring in three different productions simultaneously. Between conversations with coworkers, interactions with nearby tables, and whatever invisible subplot was unfolding around her, taking our order seemed less like a conversation and more like speed dating with distractions. About 30 minutes later, the appetizers arrived... mostly. A few cast members were absent, but the show marched on. Then came the waiting. Ranch dressing somehow became the evening's most punctual performer, making multiple appearances long before the main course ever took the stage. Around the 1-hour-and-15-minute mark, our waitress informed us that the manager was personally pulling our food, and it would be arriving shortly. Hope returned. **Act III - The Mayo Mystery** Dinner finally arrived. Unfortunately, my wife's burger featured one very clear villain: mayonnaise. She had specifically requested none. When we mentioned it, we were treated to an unexpected behind-the-scenes documentary about end-of-month meetings, server errors, kitchen issues, and internal restaurant operations. We affectionately dubbed this segment, *"Tea from the Back End."* An interesting plot twist? We were asked whether simply replacing the bottom bun would solve the problem. No... no it would not. The burger disappeared backstage and returned surprisingly quickly, looking suspiciously like the original burger wearing a fresh set of buns. The fries, however, had apparently chosen to leave the production entirely and had to be summoned for an encore. **Final Act - The Great Escape** We were told something would likely be taken off the bill for the inconvenience. Nothing was. Checks arrived. Cards were collected. Then our waitress accepted a starring role at another table while we sat waiting to sign our receipts after nearly two hours in the restaurant. Eventually, the cards and receipt folders were dropped on the table with little more than a drive-by delivery before the credits rolled. **Final Review** The surprising part? The food was actually good. The drinks were good too. This wasn't a kitchen problem as much as it felt like a restaurant trying to stay afloat while stretched too thin, combined with service that never quite felt focused. We weren't difficult guests, our order was simple, and everyone can have an off night--but the experience never recovered, and a sincere apology would have gone a long way. Good food. Long waits. An unexpectedly detailed backstage commentary. I'd happily give the food another chance, but I hope the next performance has a different director.

Grain & Grill comes with a good set of recommendations whether you are coming for food or to the…read moreBad Dad Brewery. Fairmount is a short drive off I69 and worth a try. The facility is not overly attractive or inviting. You have to decide which door to use depending on which business you are frequenting. I didn't see any signs for the outdoor seating to direct you to the hostess. The parking lot is large with lots of spaces up close. We were here for food so we picked the door to Grains & Grill. The host was very friendly and kind. The inside looked welcoming. The journey to get to the outdoor seating was a bit of a maze. There seems to be plenty of comfortable indoor seating though it is kind of broken up in disjointed rooms. The outside area was nice. The over hang shielded us from the sun in our evening dinning hours. I found the tables to be a bit close together. There was another party next to our table so we had to be cautious about moving chairs to get situated. The outdoor chairs have a flexible plastic seat. The seat seemed to give more than made me comfortable. The chair seemed a bit flimsy. However, it was comfortable and didn't collapse on me. We started with the fried mushrooms. There were a LOT of small mushroom tips in this order. The batter was thicker and a bit mushy. There wasn't much seasoning flavor to the batter but it wasn't greasy to taste. The mushrooms seemed fresh. The dish was fairly good. The cocktail sauce had a decent amount of zip to it. My wife had the blackened fish tacos. Two came with the order. She loved the fresh taste. Definitely not a fishy taste. Delicious she said! I decided to try the Hoosier Hot Plate. It seemed like a house speciality...so why not! The tenderloin was outstanding! The pork was moist and juicy and moderately thin. The breading was nicely crunchy and moderately thick with a slight greasy taste. Maybe the best tenderloin I have ever had! The tenderloin was laid on top of a bed a real mashed potatoes. You could tell they were real by the lumps I bone smooth consistency. These were excellent as well. Just like mashed potatoes should be that were going to accent the meat. The tenderloin was topped with a creamed corn. I would have been disappointed if this creamed corn was the side dish. It was kind of bland and didn't have much of a corn taste. It was also rather mushy. I didn't think the corn added much taste to the tenderloin/mashed potato taste. Overall...it was an interesting dish that was worth a try.

Our drink order was taken, which was almost all water. Drinks came several minutes later. Orders were taken a few minutes after that. Food did take a bit but not unreasonable. At that time a few people needed more water. It took over 10 minutes before a pitcher of water was delivered to the table by someone other than our server. Bread was requested to the person bringing the water since we hadn't seen our server in nearly 15 minutes. Another 10 minutes and our server comes to check on us. She stated she didn't know about the lack of bread and blamed it on the other employee not telling her. At least another 10 minutes go by and nearly everyone is finished eating when the bread arrives. The food was good and the amount of food was good. All but me had eaten there before. 3 got the Hoosier plate, a couple had the tenderloin, a couple got burgers, and I got the Makers beef tips. All enjoyed their food and only a couple had any left to take home. The mashed potatoes were very good and a large portion. There were several ounces of meat and a good portion of green beans. The food was definitely a 4+. The service was a 2 at best. Along with the poor service, they added the optional 20% gratuity, since we had a party of 8. I knew this was possible since I read it on the menu. Most of the party did not. It was noted on the ticket but it was put very close to the other charges. For some, it was not noticeable. I understand the reasoning behind the charge but if the business isn't crowded and the servers aren't working excessively, I don't believe it's justified. In this instance, it may have led to poorer service since the server knew she'd be getting 20% no matter what.

It was far from the limited menu and "See here is our brewery equipment" place. Researching their website, we were convinced this was the place to be on our "chasin' racin'" weekend. My companion noticed that the clientele was quite diverse. I noted that also. We both agreed it was a sign of a thriving establishment. Autumn was our server and she was a lot of fun. Conversant, knowledgeable of the menu, and attentive, she was just great. One of my sides was a Caesar Salad. It was copious to the point that I could not finish it when it was appropriately brought out ahead of time. As a diabetic, I am concerned about carbs, but the Alaskan Whitefish grabbed me . While my plate was messy, I peeled off the coating and enjoyed the nice tender fish inside. In Tennessee, corn pudding is different than what they brought me, but it was wonderful. Bread pudding of the day was S'mores. I had my fill, brought home the rest and my family loved it. Local history was abundant. The menu held an article on local history and the lobby had many historic photos of local interest. I took many photos of them for remembrance. Chances are I will never return to Kokomo. But if I do go back. This is where I will dine.

The restaurant is a cross between sports bar and family restaurant, we all real liked the atmosphere and service. Now for our reason for being there: the food. We started with the fried jalapeños and fried green tomatoes. Both were delicious. The tomatoes were heavily breaded and cooked soft. A nice crunch. The dips are house made and delicious. We all loved our meals. Excellent brisket. I brought smoked sausage back for my husband. He said they were great (and didn't share with me). The beer was delicious. Are we returning? A hard yes! Worth the trip.
