I went to Wingnut tattoos to get my helix pierced! I had a certain idea in mind which didn't exactly align with my mom's, so Joel helped find a middle style that fit both our wants! The piercing was practically painless for me and it looks amazing! Since I was a minor, they checked both my license and my mom's license, which I was happy about since that just accentuated their professionalism. I absolutely love Wingnut. I visited in the past to get my first tattoo (ask for Joe, he was great) but this time around I wanted to get my nose pierced. With Covid, Wingnut has drastically changed their typical operations. You can still set up appointments but they will call you into the building one at a time and will direct you to your room or space to meet with your artist. They had me fill out a release/consent form and also had hand sanitizer and thermometer to read my temperature. Aside from that, my visit was great. My piercer was Paxton and he was amazing. I'm terrified of needles so he was really patient with me and you could tell that he had a lot of experience (he's been piercing for over 20 years). It was all over and done with in a few seconds and my piercing has been healing nicely. Everything here is extremely sanitary and you can tell they put a lot of effort into that. read more

I went to Wingnut almost four years ago on my eighteenth birthday to get my belly button pierced. I was impressed with them then for all of the standard reasons (clean shop, professional piercing job, nice jewelry) but when they impressed me the most was just the other day. I called shortly before I arrived to see if they could remove an earring for me that never healed correctly. The lady on the phone was so friendly and told me they could squeeze me in. I showed up and because it was such a quick job they took care of me first. I was ushered into the piercing room with my friend where the earring was removed quickly and painlessly. The piercer even took the time to help take care of the aftermath. They did this all at no cost to me and I was blown away by how welcomed I felt. You can find clean and professional piercing shops all around the twin cities. Wingnut sets themselves apart with their stellar customer service and overall guest experience. This has been the only place I've gone for a tattoo so far (three sessions so far as well) but it has been great. Dan has been the one doing my piece for me and he's always a pleasure to talk to, as he's very funny. But you have to have a NSFW sense of humor! I only gave 4 stars mainly because of how scheduling works, but it's understandable for the business itself. If I didn't like Dan or his work I would have had to go elsewhere, but because of him I am willing to wait however long it takes (even if I miss a few times of scheduling) to get more work! He makes the tattoo process far more bearable even when it hurts. (Scheduling is calling between 2-4pm on the first of each month. If you forget or it fills up, you have to wait a month to try again! At least this is with tattooing, as far as I'm aware. Looks like piercings could be different. I'd suggest calling to ask!) read more

My husband gets all his ink done here and we have been very happy with their work. I am a little disappointed with a piercing I received that i have had nothing but problems with. I had snake bites done. I love them at first but the next day noticed things weren't going well. The left side was placed in a weird spot too close to my lip in comparison with the right side and the swelling caused the ball to pop off every 20 minutes and was swallowing up the back of the jewelry and it has been 3 weeks since getting the piercing. The ball no longer will stay on the jewelry so I had to take it out. I'm a bit bummed because we spent a decent amount of money. read more

I went to Wingnut in March. Paxton was there and he asked what I wanted to get done. I showed him a picture of what I wanted, it was 3 piercings shaped into a triangle in the lobe. He argued that it was one piercing but I reassured him it was 3 single piercings. Looking back, I should have just turned around and left but I was just so excited, I wanted to get it done. He had me choose the jewelries and everything was great. I was excited and even told him I'd be back for more piercings. I was persistent with making sure to clean my piercings as instructed. 6-7 months later, I noticed my piercing was still not healed, it would puss and bleed constantly, almost daily at this time and I was really concerned so I went back in to see him. I asked him to check it out and asked if it needed to switched to a longer post or something. I admit, I was very upset, frustrated and probably rude. I had spent over $300 on these piercings and it had been 7 months and it's still not healed. I figured lobe piercings would healed by now. Paxton asked me what I have been doing for my aftercare and I told him I'd been using Dr Bronner Pure Castile Soap that was recommended by another piercer and the spray I got from the shop. As I am explaining all of this to him, he got very rude and short with me. I am the customer, I have the right to be upset. You are the professional and I would expect that you keep it professional. I told him that I am coming to him for help because I don't know what to do. My piercing seemed irritated and I just asked if it needed to be switched to a longer post. He advised that once my piercing was cleaned up, it looked fine. He suggested that I didn't switch to the longer post and it would be a waste of money. He suggested that I buy Dial soap and clean my earrings for 10 days and if that didn't help to come back and he would change the post out. By this time, I am so upset, I am shaking. I didn't even want to return to the shop even if my piercings didn't get better. I ended up going to another piercing shop to have another professional take a look at it. He said that my piercing was definitely irritated and "not happy". My ear was bleeding so much that he had to change his gloves while removing the earrings. He said that because I had 3 piercings done in one area, I should have had a long post in to help with the swelling while it was healing- that didn't happen when I got my ears pierced. This piercer suggested that since my ears were so irritated that he would switch the post out for the longer one. While he was doing this, he noticed that the angle of the piercing was off and when he tried to put the earring in the hole, he realized it was coming out of another hole. He would try again and it would again, come out of another hole. At this point because the piercings was so messed up and to make sure my earlobe would heal properly, he suggested that I take them out completely. I had spent a lot of money at Wingnut for this piercing and to find out it was not done properly, I was upset. I am even more upset because I knew my piercing wasn't doing well. I just wanted someone to look at it and help me and all I received was Paxton telling me "it looks fine, no it doesn't need a longer post" in a condescending tone. I am disappointed in the experience I received. I will never come back and will never suggest your shop to anyone. read more

Staff is rude , got a tattoo there two years ago and it turned out bad . The color looked bad right away, the "artist" had no creativity and just traced a design. He couldn't even try to come up with his own idea. Look elsewhere if you like original tattoo designs. read more

Update: I have been in contact with Dave. I appreciated him working with me over this review. This review has nothing to do with quality of my piercing. This is based solely on false advertising and professionalism. I got my nose pierced a few weeks ago with a friend. When I set up my appointment I informed them of doing it on my birthday because of their birthday discount. On the day of, one of the girl workers greeted my friend and I at the door, but was very cold and annoyed while saying, "you need to wait in your car and call Wingnut. Also, you two can't be in together." Totally fine for COVID reasons, but it would've been nice if we knew that policy before having that be our first impression. When I got my piercing Paxton was great. He walked me through everything and felt reassured. I had mentioned it was my birthday when we were talking and I brought up the discount. Right before paying for my piercing I mentioned the advertised deal from the website and he said, "yep, we can do that." Ran my card and went on my way. When I got home later that night I noticed I was not given my discount. I called a little over a day later and left a message asking that someone just please call me back. By the next week with no answer I called during business hours. Someone answered and said, "oh is this about the nasal piercing?" (Meaning that they knew I left a message). His response was, "because we are the only piercing place in the state to be doing nasal piercings we aren't offering that discount at this time." I asked why I wasn't given that information when I was told I was offered the discount when checking out. He then started getting defensive and said, "I don't know, I am just the front desk guy." He said the owner, Dave, would be back in a hour to call back. Called back in an hour, no Dave, he wrote my name down and said Dave would call me back. Over a week later with no call is why I am writing this review. This is a $70 discount I should have received from their advertisement and assurance from one of their workers that I was getting it. As someone who grew up in Anoka, I am very aware of this business with many friends getting piercings and ink from here. This is a complaint about poor people skills and being downright rude. My wife called to get info on getting our 11 year old daughter ears pieced buy a professional. After two conversation with support staff giving us the requirements on what we needed to have this done for my daughter on her birthday. We drive the 45 mins to end up be turned away by a person with less than adequate people skills. If you have some rules on how "you"work with underage clients then let your coworkers know "your rules so they can pass them on to the clients calling to give you business. Yes,you are cool and edgy but being an asshole does not look good in any business just saying. I have 3 tattoos and looking to add but because of you will be taking my business elsewhere. If I could give them zero stars I would! I can see why they are the only shop in the area that removes microdermals for the simple fact they don't know how. He straight up ripped the microdermals out of my back.I have no clue how he ever got a license and should be fired for that shit. He even left a chunk of my skin and tissue attached to my jewelry and gave it back to me! If there was somewhere to post a picture in this review I would post it! I wish I could rate each thing separately. First off.. my initial tattoo experience with wingnut was fine, my tattoo was beautiful 4 stars for that- would've been 5 had I been able to finish it but now I will need to seek a new artist with a different tattooing style to finish it.. just silly.. So my review comes from other aspects. I was cancelled on after posting a meme on my personal Instagram page that was religious based.. that my tattoo artist (Mike) decided was offensive and cancelled all future appts I had scheduled. Fine, we are all entitled to our opinions, however he made the choice to follow me on Instagram.. maybe let's just not do that with clients if easily offended. I even attempted to apologize for hurting his feelings. Then, because I had received a GC through them to DO my tattoos, I had to reach out to management to get a refund.. Dave, did agree to do this.. but I had to jump through hoops to make that happen. Agreed to meet a certain day, then wasn't there, so had to go Back the next day (an hour drive).. instead of just refunding the card and moving on. Overall, my experience was a crappy one but in the end I got my money back. I would not recommend going to this tattoo shop if your views are different then your artist, because apparently that is grounds for cancellation. I don't typically leave reviews, but I felt this was useful information for people to see. read more

If you're into realism, Gabe is THE MAN! I'm writing this review on behalf of my wife since English is her second language. Of course, I have eyes and I see her tattoos everyday. I've also spent many hours sitting next to her as Gabe has been working his artistic magic. I really can't think of enough adjectives to do Gabe justice. I'm nearly speechless as I watch him bring realistic photos of people and pets to life on someone's skin--amazing!!! Gabe is not only good at what he does, he's a nice guy. And you don't need to take out a second mortgage to pay for this beautiful work. I can't really speak to the skills of the other artists at Wingnut. I went to Wingnut to get my nose pierced and I was very pleased with the entire experience! Justin was professional, quick, and talked me through each step. The entire staff took thorough COVID precautions as well, including taking my temp, sanitizing all instruments & jewelry several times, and keeping distance/minimal contact. I brought my 17 year old daughter there yesterday for a nose piercing. The gentleman that did the actual piercing was very friendly and knowledgeable. The piercing looks amazing and my daughter was very happy. I however when we walked in, the guy at the counter took our ID's and her Birth Certificate. He was looking at them, then looked at me and said Are you sure your not her Grandmother? WHAT??? Who says this? I assured him that I was her mother, My name was right there on her Birth Certificate. I also told him that I didn't think it was very nice for him to say something like that. He took our ID's to the back and came back and tried apologizing for what he said. TOO LATE. I went into Wingnut and all I wanted was to have them take my Tragus piercing out, because after two years of having it I still wasn't able to take it out. This is because the lady put the ball on wayyyy too tight, so I was never able to get it out. I went in on a Monday expecting that it would be slow. I decided I wanted to have new jewelry put in, so I was looking at the jewelry and the lady didn't know any of the prices, so I didn't know what to look at for my price range. They had one guy doing the piercings, so I had to wait for 3 people to get multiple piercings done, when all I wanted was to swap my jewelry. The gal that helped me was super nice, but she didn't know anything about the jewelry. So I've been currently waiting for an hour just to learn the prices on the jewelry. The process of taking a tragus piercing out only takes about 30 seconds. All I'm saying is they need to have someone who is doing the register and talking about the Jewelry not be the same person doing the piercings. read more

The tattoo I got from Daryl is AMAZING! From walking in the door to set up the consultation, the consultation, to the appointment, everything was great. They are friendly, knowledgeable and skilled. The artwork that Daryl came up with from my samples was beyond my expectations and translated to my skin beautifully. I will have more work done by him. I had a half sleeve done by John.....it was just meh at best. It was a good concept but the execution wasn't great by any stretch of the imagination. I had a few artists after the fact ask me where I got it done.....said Wingnut and there was a general consensus that the tattoo wasn't even close to on par with a Wingnut Tattoo. I wouldn't go out of my way to ever tell someone about Wingnut....ended up getting the whole half sleeve re-worked and made it a whole sleeve....the artist this time around blew it out of the water.... thankfully it wasn't at Wingnut. read more

Loved this place!! It was my second tattoo, first one was done in Wisconsin. I experienced almost no pain at all, and my first tattoo was extremely painful and both were on the ribs. I have been tattooed at 5 area shops over the last 10 years or so, and while they have all been pretty good, Wingnut shines. It's very clean, organized and staff and artists are personable and dare i say...friendly! Several members of my family, including myself, have been tattooed by Blake aka Savage the Lion and have adopted him as our family artist. His work is outstanding, he is gentle, fun and works hard to get your design right and within your budget. This is the only Twin Cities shop I would give full 5 stars because they have that magical combination of great artists, clean and very comfortable shop, along with staff that make your visit enjoyable. I've gotten tattooed here before, several times. 2 great tattoos, 1 really crappy. I went in to set up for another tattoo, I was completely ignored. A couple artists were too busy looking at their phones, the piercing guy had about 10 young women waiting. After standing there about 10 minutes with no one bothering to ask me if I needed help, I walked out. The crappy experience? John tattooing me while telling another artist to put off a girl whose back piece he was working on. He said she sit like shit and she already paid in advance, he would rather have paying customers in his chair. Never again at this shop. read more
