I requested Doug repair some worn-out and broken guide channels in my windows. Basically, the builder-grade double-hung windows had broken down and would either get stuck or not stay open. I got several quotes and Doug offered the best price and also clearly explained what he would do and the parts he would order, so i went with him. I had Doug come fix some old windows that were leaking, he made them worse than they were before. They were old wood windows, he rounded the edges, used a silicone bulb in a new kerf cut he made. They had so much gap I could see day light. When I asked Doug to come back out after i saw how bad it was. He just told me to wait and see what happens after it rains. Welp, during the next rain we had more water than before. I decided to wait to review his work cause I was so angry. But now I have to replace the wood window cause the damage he did and I refuse to talk him. read more

I really wanted to keep the 1940's look of our home which meant keeping the wood windows we have. Most of them were painted shut and we didn't even know that the top window was supposed to work. I did a bit of searching and found a couple window repair companies and even though I only talked with him over the phone and email, I felt the most comfortable with his explanation and experience. We have 11 windows with varying degrees of repair needed. Mostly Doug and his partner Jessie took the windows out, replaced all of the mechanics, sanded down to the wood, then put in weather stripping. They also helped repair a few broken window panes. It doesn't sound like a lot, but removing windows that have been painted shut and then sanding off 70 years of stuff is nothing to laugh at. The windows work great now and sound like new windows because of the weather stripping that is put in. It cost about $200 per window where it probably would have cost just that for a new window without labor to put in. Now we are getting our house painted and armed with Doug's painting instructions have informed our painters about how to properly sand and paint the windows. They assumed that the top windows don't work until we showed them resulting in shocked faces. A few things to note if you decide to do this type of repair: - The inside and outside of your house will be dusty. They are sanding and the stuff gets everywhere! I was using a Swiffer to pick up the dust but it doesn't want to be pick up. You have to go in with a wet rag. They will cover some of your furniture but not all of it. So if you have something you don't want a fine layer of dust on, cover it yourself or remove it from the room. - They must have access to the inside of your house. The majority of work is done inside. - You need to plan to have both the external and internal part of your window painted. Some of the paint will be scraped on both sides which is good. There will also be some metal exposed where they put the new mechanics in for your window. They recommend using wax where wood meets wood so the windows continue to work correctly. But know that if you want your windows to work, it may not look exactly pretty where the sashes are since you aren't necessarily going to be painting this area. read more

Wood casement windows. From 1928. Yes, I've got them. Four, to be exact. Aren't you jealous? What I especially liked about these fabulous windows is that on a hot Long Beach day, when the sun was beating down on my west facing wood casement windows, only one would open easily. Two wouldn't open at all. Awesome. Enter Doug. I called B&B hardware, and they told me he is the best at this sort of thing. They were right. He came, he saw, and he conquered my windows, and now they all open. He told me what to do to keep them in good shape, and he offered to come back on his own time to fix something up that isn't even part of what I paid for. He worked his ass off all day long, and left the house possibly cleaner than he found it. Me, I offered to pass out his cards to my 19 neighbors that likely have the same issue with their 83 year old window. Highly, highly recommended for any historic (or otherwise) window needs you might have. **there was a misunderstanding about cost when he quoted me (my mom and I thought he had really low balled me) and it ended up being WAY more than I had understood (he actually hadn't), but it was still worth it for a job well done. I have a 1923 house in Anaheim; most of the 28 double sash windows did not work. I really wanted to keep the windows because they make the house unique. I found Doug on Angie's List. He came out gave me a quote and stuck to the price quoted. He had great communication skills and showed up on time and when he said he would. When Doug came out he re-roped, fixed the weights and pulleys, sanded and scraped the jambs (I guess you are not suppose to paint them....... who knew??!?!!!??) replaced some of the cracked panes and lubricated the jambs with orange oil and beeswax. When Doug finished the windows he offered to come back out after we painted the windows and put the hardware on at no additional cost. Hiring somebody to do work in your house can be a little scary at times, but I promise you with Doug you are getting an A++ human being and you will not be disappointed with the work he does. Over the weekend we had some windows repaired at our home by Doug. I had to check to see if he was on Yelp! and give him some props. Doug was EXCELLENT!! After shopping around and speaking to a few companies, Doug was the best price i found. Now sometimes that's not always a good thing, which is why i was kinda skeptical...plus he showed up to my house with a Red Sox cap, my house is Dodger Town!! After giving him the 3rd degree on if he knew what he was doing, he had me convinced so i went ahead and let him do the work. I couldn't be happier with the workmanship, and the great customer service he gave me. He showed up on time every morning, keeping my schedule in tact and made sure the house was spic and span every day he left. Doug was very polite and professional and gave us a decent price on replacing two of our old wooden double hung windows that had to match an existing window. He also cleaned up the area nicely before he left. But the windows I was left with do not look like any new windows I've ever seen. There is thick globs of white gunk along the glass. I assumed he would cut it off, or clean it up, but no. So I got a utility knife and tried trimming it myself, and it is not easy! I asked him why it was like this, and if he would come and fix it, and got no response. I can't imagine this is normal? Anyway, it will require different tools and a lot of work for me to clean up the windows to the point they are ready to caulk and paint. I believe they should have been ready to paint after installation. :( I'd have given one or two stars but didn't want to be a jerk. read more

I wanted to have my windows restored rather than replaced so I called Doug and the other company highly rated on yelp to come and give me a quote. Doug has his prices clearly spelled out on his website and when he came to give me the quote i got those exact prices with no surprises. Needless to say, he was 50% less than the other company. I booked Doug. He came to my house (on time) fixed my 60 year old windows so they work like new for the price he promised. you really cant ask for much more than that. This is the easiest type of review to write because the experience was just great all around. I have a building built in the 50's with aluminum casement windows. A few of the windows are warped and wouldn't close enough to lock. I did some research and found Windows Repaired and Restored online. The woman who answered my call was friendly, informative and offered to have Doug come out (without charge) to my place to see if he could assist me with the window issue. I live a good 30 minutes from Long Beach so coming to take a look for free was pretty unexpected. I did have to wait about 10 days until Doug was going to be in my area but that wasn't a problem for me. Anyhow, the woman that works in their office was excellent with her follow up calls to confirm the meeting and was always very pleasant. I usually wouldnt even comment on something like this but she impressed me. When Doug came out to my building, he took a quick look at the first window and said he could fix it with a screwdriver in a couple minutes. After about 5 minutes the window was fixed AND I was taught how to fix the problem. Even though Doug had taught me enough so that I could fix the other windows in my building, he still volunteered to fix them himself and didnt charge me anything for any of it. Doug made an appointment to come on a Friday morning for the first time. He didn't show or call. Late in the day he called to tell me that he had locked his keys and cell phone by accident at the place of his first job and that's why he hadn't called or showed. He wanted to reschedule for the following Monday morning. I told him that it sounded like a 'dog ate my homework' story, but I'd give him another chance. He did show on Monday and he looked over the work that needed to be done. My home in Pasadena has 13 original 1927 wood windows. The windows looked awesome, but were completely useless- they got stuck and didn't open in the summer and let all the cold air in in the winter. I talked to three window repair companies. Doug was the only one with a reasonable quote who was willing to re-rope, repair, and weather strip all the windows and replace one aluminum window with a custom wood one to match the originals. Doug explained everything thoroughly and is really knowledgeable about wood and windows. He's easy to work with, very trustworthy, and clean. I would only recommend that someone be on-site for quality control. After the work was done I found some loose moldings and touch up work that should have been done. Doug was happy to fix this but it took a while for him to return. Still, someone else may have never returned to fix these things (since I had already paid in full), so overall I would recommend Doug. I'm so happy with my windows now. Other contractors that come in have commented on what a good job Doug did. The windows are beautiful and it's so cool to be able to use them as they were originally designed. read more

We live in a 1920's Spanish house, in an HPOZ zone, and he restored and repaired every one of our windows. We had a window that was stuck. The glass had been replaced a few months previously and it hadn't opened right since then. I spoke with Marti, and she was very helpful and set an appointment with Doug. She called to confirm the appointment too. He was right on time, very friendly and went right to looking at our stuck window. He spent a good 15 minutes adjusting"springs and things & spraying stuff" and,viola, it opened again. He explained our windows are pretty heavy and we will more than likely require more adjustments and work to have them close easier in the future and what that will cost. We kept our first home, a 1929 single story residence, as a rental and all 15 double hung windows were in need of work to some degree. Painted shut windows, weathered windows, half open windows you name it, our windows needed the help of a true window whisperer. Doug and his team beautifully tuned up all 15 windows (1 new one) and they're all in working order. New hardware was installed, windows were removed and re-installed, weather stripping installed and all of them open and shut for the very first time. His work exceeded my expectations as I thought that a couple of them would destined for the wood bin but he's seen worse. The work was done within a couple of weekends as noted in his quotation. Just keep in mind that Doug and his crew does NOT paint the windows but if you ask him he has a couple of referrals who can get the job done. Doug will tell you that you a painter needs to know how to paint wood windows. He's up front with you and enjoys working on wood windows. My windows are now completed and my only regret is that I won't be able to enjoy them as it is our rental but I am grateful for Doug's work to preserve the charm with this 1929 rental property. read more

Doug refurbished all 13 of our casement (swing out) windows so that they all work with single-hand operation. He favors restoration and use of existing materials vs. replacing since old growth wood that is generally found in older construction tends to be better than the new growth wood commonly used today. He is very dependable and did a great job in getting even our most problematic windows (warped frames, painted over hardware) fully operational. Highly recommended! read more

I would not recommend this company to anyone! In 2011, I contacted Doug to completely restore my windows (all 25 of them). In fact, my house is featured in the pics he uploaded on this site. Anyway, we agreed on a number and got started. He told me the job would take about 7 days, which is important since I have dogs in the home and they had to remove my windows while working on them. I made arrangements to have my dogs out of the house during that time. Well, one week quickly turned into three plus weeks and it wasn't until I told Doug that I absolutely had to have the windows done, as I was having a party that weekend and could not have windows unfinished or missing. The windows were done, yet the painter he recommended would not be done for a bit after Doug was to be finished so Doug said he would come back with the painter was done and finish all the windows. Doug never provided me a receipt after I requested on several times (though I have my check stub with payment to him). After repeatedly asking, he said he lost everything on this computer and could provide me with a written one. He assured me several times he would send it, but no receipt ever came in the mail. Painter finished, Doug did not come to finish the windows. The painter tried, but didn't quite know exactly what he was doing. Anyway, a month or two later I opened one of my windows and the wheel fell off the rope and the window was stuck open. Not good news considering rain was coming and I just spent several thousand dollars restoring my windows. I called Doug who told me that was going to happen from time to time as old windows are just finicky. He said to call him since he lives close by and he will swing by and fix them whenever that happens. This happened about three more times. On the last time he sent his friend Esteban over. By now, I had four windows that were not functioning properly. Esteban looks at them and says the windows were not done properly, that Doug had cut the rope too long and they needed to be repaired. He also told me the windows were not even close to being finished right and that Doug needed to take care of that. He told me he would call Doug for me and set something up. Doug agreed to fix everything and told me Esteban would come fix everything that weekend. We set up a time and I was happy enough. That weekend rolls around, I wake up, sit in the front room so I make sure I don't miss Estaban. I wait for three hours and no word. I text Doug and don't hear back. I call him and finally he answers. He yells and me and tells me Estaban came by and I must not have been home and if he is going to fix my windows I need to hold up my end of the bargain and be home. I assure him that I haven't left and have been sitting about three feet from the front door so I know I did not miss Esteban. He says there must have been some confusion about the time and he will send Estaban over. I have not heard from Doug since. I have text and called him repeatedly and have never gotten a response. I tried to leave messages but both numbers say the voicemail is full and I can't leave a message. In the end, I paid thousands of dollars to restore my windows and they are far worse off than they were before Doug did any work on them. At least they all functioned before. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND DOUG AND THIS COMPANY TO ANYONE. I will be fixing my windows with someone who knows what they are doing and then will pursue legal action against doug for the cost of those repairs. read more

There are about three outfits that do "window restoration" on historic homes in Long Beach. I have experienced all three and had a wonderful experience with Doug and the team at Windows Repaired and Restored. Think of it as the Goldilocks story of window repair - one too hot, one too cold and one just right! We went with contractor #1 - super disappointed with the outcome. In general I would say a sloppy job. Then we went to contractor #2. They came out, wasted an hour of my time asking me tons of questions about each window only to never surface with so much as an estimate. Finally we were referred to Doug. He quickly made an appt. to visit our home and delivered an estimate in a day or two, as promised. Pricing seemed fair (more so once the job was done and I saw how much work it was). Just called this place to try to get a quote for window repair since two of my window balancers are broken. These people clearly have too much business and want no new customers since the lady I spoke to did everything in her power to talk me out of a repair and try to convince me to seek another business for a window replacement. First stated that they were booked up and no one could get to my house "for a long time," then when I said that I was in no rush she sighed and asked about my windows. I attempted to explain the problem (in between her cutting me off and borderline yelling) and that they were vinyl windows, then she said that they don't work on vinyl windows. She immediately followed that up with "we only repair vinyl windows, not replace them." What?! I gave up and called window restoration and repair in Los Alamitos. Night and day difference. A repair man was at my house 2 hours later. Take your business elsewhere. I know I will. read more
