Last night, I stopped by this venue and noticed a substantial crowd. The lines for drinks were lengthy, but the atmosphere seemed appealing. Prior to joining the queue for beverages, I visited the restroom, where I was initially the only person waiting. As I stood there, more individuals began to arrive. After waiting for 3-5 minutes, I knocked on the door, saying, "Knock, knock, hello?" The door rapidly swung open, and two females exited, vocally and loudly expressing their discontent. I remained calm, used the restroom quickly, and then rejoined the queue for a drink. As I waited, I heard a loud "Hey!" and turned to find the bartender speaking to me in a rude tone, stating, "If you have a problem, you need to come to me.!" I visited WindJammer's last week with three friends. We were going to have a bite to eat and play their Golden Tee machine. The place itself is clean, rather dark atmosphere, cozy. I am a disabled person, suffering from a neurological disorder. I was greeted by a very snarky server who's name is Stephine. She instantly commented on why in the world was I wearing a light sweatshirt and gloves. Even though it may be a warm day I get cold easy especially going into a new environment that may have AC running cold. I ignored these initially comments and ordered a drink. My friends ordered their meals with one of them ordering a special to go. Stephine tells him, not nicely, that you cannot order a special to go but she will place the order and bring him a box. At this point she notices me sitting at the table but I don't have my shoes on. This is a result of my condition that it causes estreem pain. Stephine rudely and loudly says I have to have shoes on. I explain to her I'm disabled and confining myself to the table. She asks, do you have a permit? At this point I'm assuming she means a disable permit, which of course I do, however, I have no interest in doing anything at this point but leaving this very mean server. My friends embarrassed for me, pay up and we are getting ready to leave. Obviously this wasn't enough for Stephine who as I'm leaving says, again loudly, next time you come in here you better bring that permit, I'll not allow this to happen again. The food my friends had said was good. Nicely priced. Still the service cannot be forgiven by me. In all my dealings with Salem and may it be, bar, restaurant, or any establishment I have never been or seen a disabled person treated so poorly. If you are Disabled bypass WindJammer's or at least bypass Stephine. read more

I am afraid standards have slipped at Windjammers Restaurant & Neighborhood Bar. Pizza has been taken off the menu. Our server, Jennifer (a real sweetheart), was insistent that pizza has been off the menu for more than 19-months. Too bad, the pizza was something Windjammers did right. I've stopped ordering the Beef Stroganoff because the last two times I had it, the dish was a disaster -- gluey pasta and tough chewy beef. Very disappointing. Tonight, four of us met for dinner at Windjammers. Two of us had the Thursday Night Special: Pork Ribs, Fries, Coleslaw and Garlic Bread / $7.95. It was just OK, both of us agreed we wouldn't order the ribs again. One of us ordered the Pork Sliders, Tater Tots and Coleslaw / $6.95. The cook forgot the Coleslaw, (no big loss), but she said the Sliders and the Tater Tots (a substitution) were good. The last person ordered the Fish and Chips, Fries and Coleslaw / $10.95. He said the Fries were the worst he had ever had. They were cold, and he left most of them on the plate. All in all, disappointing. This bar is better on nights it lets me down than most bars are on the best night ever. It's like Cheers had a baby with a minivan and you got to spend your time with that baby always feeling drunk & attractive. It's cozy, loud, & dark (but not scary dark). I came here after the first time I got scared by a gif set on /nosleep, and one time after a spider crawled over the back of my hand, just to feel safe. - that's the kind of bar it is. I have been drinking here for damn near 10 years. This struck me tonight, & I want to point out that it's really been the service for me from the very beginning - the week I turned 21 I left a pair of heels here (ladies, you feel me) & the bartender remembered my name when I came back for them the next evening. I am newly back to tow, and have had nothing but great experiences here. I 1st came here on a recommendation from my boyfriend. He comes different hours than I do, but had good things to say. I have come on mult days/times so far. Ben, Kim, Kelly, Stephanie, and Beth do a good job. They each have their quirks, but I have never found myself without drink or without good companionship. This is a pretty quiet place on a Thursday at 7 or 8. There were people on the patio so, maybe it's more lively on less warm nights. From the clientele tonight, this appears to be a favorite of the 50+ set. The food seems decent. The nightly specials run from 4 - 9 PM. On this night, Thursday, I had the steak fettuccini which had good flavor. Monday it's tacos; Tuesday, tostadas; Wednesday, spaghetti; Friday, prime rib; Saturday, sirloin steak; Sunday, prime rib burgers. Overall, reasonable food for a reasonable price. Drinks vary on price - in other words, the prices seem high for some things and low for others. Worth a shot. read more

In one tiny section there were a bunch of really bad karaoke singers. When my friend and I walked, the female bartender looked at us the way people do in a small town when you're an outsider. The two stars is for the staff and atmosphere. The food is really good. There is a bartender named Stephanie and one named Ben and they always seem uninterested in customers. In fact you would be hard-pressed to find anybody working anywhere in the service industry that treats people as poorly as they do and still expect you to pay. Of course you would only have to pay if you can ever get their attention long enough to be served. I have walked in this place several times and had them look at me and never say hello, have a seat I'll be with you in a minute, nothing. They are the rudest people to ever work in the bar business. It was my 21st birthday yesterday and my siblings wanted to take me out for karaoke and some drinks if I wanted too. The Bartender names Stephanie was rude and pretty much said I can't drink since I'm not 21 even though I order tator tots. It was 1am the next day (February 24 not the 23). After a heated conversation about the date, the manger or something came out and apologized but I wasn't having it because I have to handle with a bunch of racist remarks because I apparently don't look like I can speak or understand English. She messed up on our orders twice, was snarky and rude the entire time and gave me the stink eye going to the restroom and once we were about to leave, tells us that we needed to get out of the establishment. A big group of friends and I were looking for a new Friday night Karaoke spot. I called a few different places to see who actually had Karaoke on Fridays, and Windjammers quickly became our destination of choice for the evening. Overall, I was pleased with everything, from the awesome burgers and beer battered fries, to the very well organized Karaoke books by artist and by title. There were a couple little hiccups in the beginning, when we first arrived: Like how both of the waitresses thought the other was helping our table of 7, so neither had actually come over to help us. This was fixed with much apologizing and embarrassment on their part. The sound system was decent, the TVs were nicely placed with one in front and one in back so you had your choice of where to stand while belting out tunes. Our KJ hostess was funny and kept the songs rolling right along with very little wait. And while neither I nor my boyfriend elected to sing this night, our other friends had a great time with their songs. By 10pm or so, the place had filled up nicely. Some of the performances were truly spectacular, like the chubby white dude in Office Space attire who got up there and absolutely killed it to Kris Kross's Jump. This was probably the most unexpected, yet delightful surprise of the evening. One major downfall of the night was when I went to settle my tab and saw that the total was only $4 and knew this was wrong. Trying to do the honorable thing, I told the waitress that this shouldn't be right, as I had purchased a pitcher as well and pointed over to our table. She said "OOooh, you're over there. One sec and I'll fix this!" Well, fix it she did. Two minutes later I had paid $34 and was trying to figure out why this was also wrong as I was walking out to our car (maybe I shouldn't have drank half the pitcher). This is when my boyfriend mentioned that he had already paid for the burgers and his energy drinks when he first ordered them at the counter (before the waitresses had figured out who was helping our table). Somehow the one who took his cash did not tell the other that the burgers had already been paid for and they double charged us. I don't know if this is enough to make me not return, but from now on I will most definitely be watching exactly who is helping us and who's settling the tab. read more

I have read much ruder or seemingly fake reviews and they are still on the main page, I am very frustrated! UPDATE - Sunday January 3, 2016: I have been here many times over the last 4yrs, and honestly, the biggest problem I have with this place is the size of the building (it is tiny) and the crowd it attracts. You get a lot of rude obnoxious drunk idiots, and ulike Jammes on 12th Street which gets a similar crowd, this place does not have really stiff drinks. The bartenders are also hit or miss when it comes to service, most of the good staff has left. :( Karaoke is also not what it used to be, it is run by the same company, but the KJ who runs it seems to play favorites a lot and will "accidentally miss you" if she doesn't like you. While this has never happened to me, I have talked to quite a few people where it has happened. ___________________________________________ ORIGINAL REVIEW: I grew up very close to where Windjammers now is, that spot its in now has been many different businesses, so when it changed from an Indian Restaurant to a bar I didn't pay much attention, I should have. One of my friends a bit over a month ago was going there all of time, but he got tired of going there and wanted to go somewhere new, well, we went to the South Liberty Bar and Grill and boy oh boy were we all sorry we did!!! That place had the worst service, rude staff and management, ect, the drinks were fine, but the karaoke sucked and was intermixed with terrible top 40 music for dancing every few karaoke songs, and the person running the karaoke was rude. Needless to say, since then the only place my friend went to since then for karaoke was Windjammers. I finally got to go there for the first time last week with a different friend and it was definitely on the top of my list for bars, still a little on the trying to be trendy side, and while I can't vouch for the food, the staff was friendly and attentive, all of them. I went on a Friday night and while it was packed someone came to my table several times to check in on us, I was impressed, as I have been to many less busy bars where they had people waiting tables and they never even came by our table to ask us if we needed anything. The karaoke was nice as the lady who was KJing that night tried very hard to get everyone in in an expedient way, alternating between new singers and the ones who already sang, while on a busy night this can take a while, at least I got to sing my songs unlike at some other bars where I waited for a couple hours and nothing despite my putting in songs long before other people who then got up to sing. I cannot vouch for the food yet, but the only drink I had was a virgin margarita because I was driving, and it was just fine, I mean its essentially ice and margarita mix, lol, so you get what you pay for, and it was reasonable at $3. The only quibble (which is a very minor one) was that I couldn't get the margarita blended, which is fine, as I don't like them blended; so I could not get it blended because their blender broke, AND then she came back after telling us we could have salt on the rims, she then told tell us they spilled the salt on the floor so they couldn't give us salt either. lol But she was very friendly and had a good sense of humor so it was no big d. Over all, in terms of karaoke and service, it is definitely one of better ones in the Salem area, and I have been to quite a few in the Salem. If the night shift staff behaved like the day shift staff, this would be a five star bar. It only took two days for the daytime brunette bartender to familiarise herself with me, and on day two their computers went down and she couldn't run my card. "No biggie," she said, "I'll keep a running tab on a receipt and you can just come pay it later!" What a cool bartender. I made sure she was aware I was going out of town immediately after my visit. "Just come see us when you get back!" Fast forward a couple days and I head back in on Friday after work. Friday nights are busy everywhere, so I know I'm going to be waiting in line. That's fine. There's two bottle blondes working that night, and the one that "helped" me was absolutely, obnoxiously rude. All I needed to do was pay a tab, that was taped to the shelf, with my name and total on it. "Why doesn't you just pay it then?" Was her snide question when I pointed the paper out to her. I told her the Internet connection when down on Tuesday and I don't carry cash. "Well I didn't hear anything about this." Even more attitude this time, and I'm fed up with it. I asked her "do you work days?" "No." "Okay. Then why would you have heard about it. Are you going to let me pay what I owe?" I will go there day in and day out to hang out and chat with the daytime tender, but you couldn't pay me enough to go back at night and deal with that woman again. We just had some appetizers- mozzarella sticks and chips and salsa. The mozzarella sticks tasted strange and the chips & salsa were both just store bought. The service here is really slow but when it happens its friendly. The karaoke is ok. I feel like the KJ is a little too picky on what she chooses for you to sing and definitely doesn't seem to go in a normal rotation? 11.15.2013 around 7 pm We sat at the bar, at first entry all seemed pleasant. It did not seem to be very busy. But that was as good as it got. Well.... we were greeted right away by the person (not bartender or server as she did not project that at all) behind the bar. We ordered drinks and requested menus. Ordered the house special Prime Rib & Buffalo Wings. Received our meals and the best part of the food was the salad & the steamed veggies. The wings tasted like tomato paste & cayenne pepper with watered down ranch dressing. The Prime Rib is really unexplainable & mashed potatoes were watery and tasteless. But NO ONE would know our experience, because NO ONE asked. There were four staff members at the front of the house. But you couldn't tell that by the lack of service being received. We were witness to one staff members sharing, with what appeared to be regular patrons, some challenges that she and the person behind the bar was experiencing. I went to the gaming room for entertainment & about 12-15 minutes later my husband came back to retrieve me because he had been setting at the bar & had not been offered a refill to his beverage nor could he get acknowledgment. In closing, we left & the end of our experience was just as impersonal as the entire evening. Everything depends on the night that you go. I have been there 3 times. Each time I have ordered the same spicy chicken wrap. Which as described on the menu has chicken, lettuce, pico de gallo, secret spicy sauce, cheese First time (Night ofMarch 16th) it was by far the best spicy chicken wrap I have ever had. Made to perfection. Second time it was by far the worst. It consisted of chicken and black olives drowned in franks red hot sauce. Completely inedible. Third time was at least close. Lettuce, bacon, chicken, spicy sauce, maybe a complete slice of tomato. Whoever cooked on the night of March 16th needs to train the rest of the cooks so there can be some consistency! To sing, of course. I went up to the bar myself and ordered my drink. I had a feeling once I finished the gal would ask me if I wanted another. :30 mins go by, no offer, so I go back up to the bar and order a drink. All the other tables around me had wait service so I do feel this was a little strange. I never said anything. I have never been in Salem so I am not familiar with the customs here. My husband and I went in for lunch on a Sunday, so it was very quiet and only had a few other customers. (It's a very relaxed atmosphere, no stuffiness) But we weren't looking for a wild Sunday lunch. We had heard from friends that they had good food, so we checked them out. I had the best Cesar Wrap ever and onion rings that were great as well. My husband had a patty melt and onion rings that he loved. It's rare now a days to eat a lunch from a place and actually feel like you had GOOD food for the money- and this is what we got. Service was great, and food was awesome.
