Speakeasy dance floor getting ready to line dance
    Karun O.

We really enjoy the speakeasy. It is a fabulous event for inclusive gatherings. We mostly attend the womyn's monthly dance with the fabulous DJ Rosi. We have been disappointed by the frequent turnover of waitresses and bartenders. It is a lovely venue and the drag shows are amazing and fun. We have also been there for a women's arm wrestling competition. The completion of the back room is gorgeous and quiet jazzy atmosphere compared to the lively high energy of the main bar.

You order at the counter and then you get a number to take with you and place at whichever seat you choose. Drinks and food both came out really quick. I tried the bees knees which had honey, lavender, rosemary and simple syrup with a dash of black pepper. I did not see nor taste the black pepper but I was a huge fan of this drink. It wasn't overpowering in any of the flavors and the rosemary sprig made it look so cute. I got the breakfast potato hash with no tomatoes and it was a delicious and filling breakfast. The potatoes were so good my group wouldn't stop helping themselves to them. I added some hot sauce as it was in the dryer side but still really good. I also tried the matcha coconut scone. It had a pretty matcha green color but it was hard to taste the matcha or coconut and it was quite dry. Service was quick and friendly. The inside is really beautiful and we couldn't help but do a little photoshoot, so many fun backgrounds! Things to note: Restroom shared with other businesses close by businesses and metered street parking only.

It definitely brought back some old memories. I don't remember the exact date it opened, even though it says 1996--I just remember eating here when I was younger. The food was delicious! I ordered the truffle mac & cheese topped with grilled chicken. Stubborn is also one of my favorite soda brands, so I had to get a Stubborn Root Beer to go with it. I also ordered the sweet potato fries. I opted out of the honey, but they still came topped with coconut flakes, which was a really nice addition. The atmosphere was cozy and spacious, with plenty of room to relax. I even had to take a work phone call while I was there, and I never felt like I was interfering with anyone else's conversation, which was nice. Overall, I'll definitely be stopping by again soon. I'd highly recommend checking out Ventis if you've never been. They have plenty of options for everyone, and the menu is simple without feeling overwhelming. It's mostly one-sided with a few additional options on the back, making it pretty easy to choose from. I imagine just about everything on the menu is delicious! Well, that's just not the case anymore. The Underground is in The Monarch hotel, which was independently-owned until some corporation bought it, and the new ownership systematically destroyed everything that made The Underground unbeatable. I intentionally held off on writing any updates to my review because I wanted to give (new) staff a chance to work the kinks out under the new ownership. Well, nothing improved, and everything got worse: * The AWESOME lobster bisque? GONE * The mushroom medley served with the steaks? GONE * Freshly-prepared appetizers? GONE **NOTE: Some of my favorites were still on the menu, but they're clearly made ahead-of-time with far inferior ingredients and reheated before service *The amazing Jacobsen finishing salt lovingly and PERFECTLY sprinkled on every steak before service? GONE *The AMAZING staff that LITERALLY were literally more like family than wait staff? GONE (well, probably 95% of them anyway, a literal couple originals were still on-staff during my last visit, but they clearly weren't happy, and appeared to be under a LOT of stress). *Steaks that defy their relatively low price point? GONE **The steaks are still on the menu, but the prices have skyrocketed (seriously, some by as much as $25 per on my last visit), and the quality is and preparations are far WORSE than previous. The previous steakhouse menu has been added to with other non-steak dishes, but they're even worse than the steaks now are. Their web site shows that they're "closed for renovations" for two months, but I doubt I'll be back. I doubt it will be even remotely close to what it was before when they're done with it (who knows, they may just put a chain restaurant franchise down there). DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!!!!

After getting sat down, we just... waited. For about 10-15 minutes, nobody showed up. Eventually a server came and took our order in a very disinterested fashion. We ordered a cocktail, the bruschetta appetizer, and then a burger, the king salmon and a plate of chicken pasta in white sauce for the little one. Everything took forever to come out (even the drink), nobody came out to check or refill waters in the 90 minutes we were there. Cocktail (Spring Break) - 5/5 great! Bruschetta - 3/5. Generally good but the bread was carbonized and as hard as a rock. Burger + fries - 3/5. Burger looked sad but was actually pretty tasty, if a little overcooked. Fries looked great (hand cut) but upon us closer inspection in the low light, you could see they were 50% those tiny peel pieces that get burned when frying. Guys! You are supposed to take those pieces out! Salmon - 3/5. Kind of... fine. A little fishy, not really what i expect for King salmon. Chicken pasta for toddler - 4/5. Actually this was delicious (if a bit overcooked) and it will my leftover lunch (toddler didn't eat it but that isn't the pasta's fault). Total bill for everyone, with tip: $126 So pretty mediocre food, downright bad service, and premium pricing. It's a pass from me!

The venue is small and cozy, well lit, cute stage, clean bathrooms, all the basics covered. We planned on dinner because it seemed like the thing to do. When we hammered out what we wanted our order to be, we handed it to the guy handling it and he went about his business and we enjoyed the show. Except when we were interrupted. Three. Separate. Times. Because they were out of things on the menu they couldn't work out in one go apparently, both food and drink, and we'd have to quietly and as unobtrusively as possible figure out alternatives. Then it took stunning Ages to get the food out. Which, to be fair, was tasty for vegan eats. The totchos were drowning in So Many goopy layers, it was more like eating a wet salad on top of lumpy mash, but still, pretty tasty. We also had drinks and entrees. However, about a half hour after we ate, we started getting sick. I held on as long as I could, mostly until I could get home, when the throwing up started. It didn't end for some time. I had eaten nothing else that day, and neither had my cohort who ate the same as I did. Once the food was out of my gut, I was completely fine. If we ever go back it will be entirely for the entertainment because having a menu doesn't actually mean you have your shit together in the kitchen, and I can't risk what was very likely mild food poisoning. I can eat some gnarly food, I'm kind of a garbage disposal that way, so there's no other explanation. I wish them the best, they've got a great venue.

The room alone almost made it worth my time. The English pea risotto was very good, and the house fries were good. The French-oaked flight I requested was a sad effort. The bartender never asked what distillers I had as options other than indicating that Makers 46 must be what I'm after when I said French oaked and creamy was my vibe, to which I raised an eyebrow and indicated I was ok if he started with that in my flight as a base for comparison. Otherwise he never asked whether I'd like to spend good money on something special (I would have said yes) and later claimed these were the only French-oaked bottles they even had in stock despite a claimed inventory of over 2,000 whiskeys. What arrived: Penelope Architect--nothing at all on the nose, something like wood paneling on the palate. Angel's Envy Triple Oak--tasted just like the Angel's Envy Rum Cask I can get at the supermarket. Maker's 46--the best of those three, yet still quintessentially basic as a wheated French-staved bargain buy, which, by the way, I never indicated I was there for. When I diplomatically indicated my that my flight was totally blasé and asked for one last pour in hopes of redeeming the experience, he brought me a redundant Maker's Heart Series in which the heart was made of mildly chocolate-inspired disappointment. Staff clearly put effort into educating and serving, and the environment is special enough that I hope to return with friends for that alone, even though I was rushed out due to a scheduled reservation needing my unscheduled seat. Ultimately the pours left me with an extremely unimpressive result and a future 0-for-2 that I'd be willing to risk in hopes of their redemption. Exceptionally impressive venue, if totally unimpressive flight curation.
