Speakeasy dance floor getting ready to line dance
    Karun O.

We really enjoy the speakeasy. It is a fabulous event for inclusive gatherings. We mostly attend the womyn's monthly dance with the fabulous DJ Rosi. We have been disappointed by the frequent turnover of waitresses and bartenders. It is a lovely venue and the drag shows are amazing and fun. We have also been there for a women's arm wrestling competition. The completion of the back room is gorgeous and quiet jazzy atmosphere compared to the lively high energy of the main bar.

You choose what you want and order at the counter and they give you a number. Then they'll bring it to your table. I enjoyed the rice bowl. The tofu seemed to be fried and the sauce on it was spicy. The miso Moon coffee thankfully did not taste like miso, lol. My friend had an espresso and said it was terrible, very sour. Everyone else at our table seemed to enjoy our food, there were a lot of burgers and fries being ordered at the group. They have my daughter's favorite sort of salad, with blue cheese and steak. Sadly, they were out of salmon the day we visited. Would definitely consider coming back if I'm in Salem again.

And that's saying a lot. You do not want to know of the torture. Suggestions: 1st: If you want to have a steak on the menu, at least serve the cut that is on the menu. 2nd: if you're worried about food cost, do something pounded, and marinated, OR do a small trimmed cut that is excellent quality, and serve it with a lot of mash and veg, and that bordelaise sauce (which wasn't bad). 3rd: Meatloaf

I just traditionally like meat. That said, my wife and mother and I came to Venti's for dinner while in Salem. They each ordered the more traditional meat hamburgers and fries. I decided since it was a vegan-forward restaurant, I'd try a vegan dish. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you, so it's a little more like a diner than a "fine dining" restaurant. Our service was good, quick and friendly. The atmosphere is a bit cold, but not off-putting. I ordered the Red Curry Pasta with a Side Salad. Other reviewers seemed to be raving about the red curry, so I thought it was worth a try. I can see why they rave about it. It was excellent! And the side salad had a variety of ingredients, so it wasn't "just a side salad". I tried the avocado ranch dressing and it was fine. Not stellar, but good. The pasta had just the right amount of sauce and was very flavorful. Now to the meat. You might expect a vegan-forward restaurant to have meat dishes as kind of an afterthought. But both my wife and mother raved about their burgers. My wife got the Rooster Burger and mom got the traditional House Burger. With meat. And cheese. And fries. They LOVED the burgers. All of us want to go back next time we're in Salem and the biggest problem will be deciding what to order. Well done, Venti's!

Well, the vegan gods rained plant based blessings upon us by guiding (some might say .. delivering lol) us to Venti's Cafe & Beer Vault in the charming downtown area of Salem. Upon entering, I first took notice of the whimsical welcoming ambiance inside, sort of reminded me of Chickpea in Vancouver, BC. Also, I had to fight back a smirk when reading about the upcharge for anyone ordering meat based options, I mean it's about time eateries started being vegan by default and adding an upcharge "meat tax" lol instead of the typical vegan-tax we vegans all too often have to incur. It's no wonder the vegan gods delivered us :) to Venti .. given that everything they had to offer was truly divine, which I offer without hyperbole of any kind, just complete sincerity!! The Grilled Cheese consisted of a parmesan crusted sourdough bread with not one but *two* melted vegan cheeses (cheddar and smoked provolone), the Truffle Fries were bold and unapologetic in their truffle-y goodness, the Tomato Basil Soup was rich and loaded with flavor and last but certainly not least, the Vegan Red Curry Mac was really delicious and brought the punch. For the latter, the individual bites didn't feel hot in and of themselves but rather it was the accumulated effect that really left a lasting impression. I think the dish could maybe benefit from a side of vegan yogurt, to add a freshness and help balance the heat but that's not to imply this dish was lacking in any way, it was sooo good! As if that wasn't enough, they also offer a raw vegan cake dessert. Sadly, we didn't get the chance to try as we didn't take notice until after we had already ordered our food. Between the decadence of the food and joyful ambiance, coupled with a charming location in downtown Salem, this will definitely be a place for use to revisit many time over!

Everything we ordered tasted intentional and high quality. We also shared a charcuterie board, which was a great call. Perfectly portioned, nicely curated, and a really good pairing with cocktails. Well, that's just not the case anymore. The Underground is in The Monarch hotel, which was independently-owned until some corporation bought it, and the new ownership systematically destroyed everything that made The Underground unbeatable. I intentionally held off on writing any updates to my review because I wanted to give (new) staff a chance to work the kinks out under the new ownership. Well, nothing improved, and everything got worse: * The AWESOME lobster bisque? GONE * The mushroom medley served with the steaks? GONE * Freshly-prepared appetizers? GONE **NOTE: Some of my favorites were still on the menu, but they're clearly made ahead-of-time with far inferior ingredients and reheated before service *The amazing Jacobsen finishing salt lovingly and PERFECTLY sprinkled on every steak before service? GONE *The AMAZING staff that LITERALLY were literally more like family than wait staff? GONE (well, probably 95% of them anyway, a literal couple originals were still on-staff during my last visit, but they clearly weren't happy, and appeared to be under a LOT of stress). *Steaks that defy their relatively low price point? GONE **The steaks are still on the menu, but the prices have skyrocketed (seriously, some by as much as $25 per on my last visit), and the quality is and preparations are far WORSE than previous. The previous steakhouse menu has been added to with other non-steak dishes, but they're even worse than the steaks now are. Their web site shows that they're "closed for renovations" for two months, but I doubt I'll be back. I doubt it will be even remotely close to what it was before when they're done with it (who knows, they may just put a chain restaurant franchise down there). DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!!!!

After getting sat down, we just... waited. For about 10-15 minutes, nobody showed up. Eventually a server came and took our order in a very disinterested fashion. We ordered a cocktail, the bruschetta appetizer, and then a burger, the king salmon and a plate of chicken pasta in white sauce for the little one. Everything took forever to come out (even the drink), nobody came out to check or refill waters in the 90 minutes we were there. Cocktail (Spring Break) - 5/5 great! Bruschetta - 3/5. Generally good but the bread was carbonized and as hard as a rock. Burger + fries - 3/5. Burger looked sad but was actually pretty tasty, if a little overcooked. Fries looked great (hand cut) but upon us closer inspection in the low light, you could see they were 50% those tiny peel pieces that get burned when frying. Guys! You are supposed to take those pieces out! Salmon - 3/5. Kind of... fine. A little fishy, not really what i expect for King salmon. Chicken pasta for toddler - 4/5. Actually this was delicious (if a bit overcooked) and it will my leftover lunch (toddler didn't eat it but that isn't the pasta's fault). The venue is small and cozy, well lit, cute stage, clean bathrooms, all the basics covered. We planned on dinner because it seemed like the thing to do. When we hammered out what we wanted our order to be, we handed it to the guy handling it and he went about his business and we enjoyed the show. Except when we were interrupted. Three. Separate. Times. Because they were out of things on the menu they couldn't work out in one go apparently, both food and drink, and we'd have to quietly and as unobtrusively as possible figure out alternatives. Then it took stunning Ages to get the food out. Which, to be fair, was tasty for vegan eats. The totchos were drowning in So Many goopy layers, it was more like eating a wet salad on top of lumpy mash, but still, pretty tasty. We also had drinks and entrees. However, about a half hour after we ate, we started getting sick. I held on as long as I could, mostly until I could get home, when the throwing up started. It didn't end for some time. I had eaten nothing else that day, and neither had my cohort who ate the same as I did. Once the food was out of my gut, I was completely fine. If we ever go back it will be entirely for the entertainment because having a menu doesn't actually mean you have your shit together in the kitchen, and I can't risk what was very likely mild food poisoning.
