Our second time in the last few weeks to visit W. Wallace. We like the vibe and intimate atmosphere of this local pub. Service is always great and they have an awesome drink menu. The chef turns out some very tasty meals as well. Last time I had the street tacos along with chips and salsa (both excellent) this visit we went with the Rodeo Burger. This is a nice take on your standard burger, very tasty and filling. My wife also had one of the current specialty drinks which she really enjoyed. I ordered a Moscow Mule, and an Espresso Martini, both were well prepared. All in all a very good experience. read more

My coworkers and I had stopped by for the Taco Crawl on Wednesday. The layout of the restaurant is very interesting because there are so many small details. They had a phone booth inside, bar with stools, and booth tables. The server gave us samples of the drinks. We each ordered different tacos and enjoyed them. This is a wonderful downtown neighborhood bar/restaurant with a grown-up vibe. Elegant without being fussy. We had the steak street tacos which were 100% on-point delicious. Very innovative cocktail menu and good service. On another visit we sat at the bar, had crème brûlée and another interesting cocktail. The bartender is super energetic and friendly. Great jazz music playing. Just a very fine ambience with good food and creative drinks. They do have a little outdoor dining area which unfortunately, same problem on a Friday night, that awful street musician stands at the corner of State Street and Liberty with an electric guitar and an amp and pretty much ruins outside dining for that entire intersection within earshot. Dropped off our daughter and had an a hour and a half just with my wife. Sat outside, one of the positives of dining in Salem downtown for the last month of the 'rona. Had their house made limoncello which my wife loved (straight with a soda back). Liked it so much she had a second!! It's not for everyone, but she discovered her love of it in Italy 2 years ago. I had a gin cocktail and a pint of Stella Artois. We weren't going to eat, but ended up with fries, a salad, and jackfruit tacos. I think our vegan daughter can eat here. The fish tacos are amazing. We have been there a few times and have always had good food and drink. The inside has it's original dark paneling and floors. It also has the original brick wall with original pressed tin ceilings, like many of the other buildings in old down town Salem. Unfortunately, they are usually understaffed. I had a Sazerac with my brother. Seems like it is a bar belonging in an alley because it's got a hidden vibe. Not sure about the menu. It's small with a cozy bar for about 10 with room for a few more at tables. A nice bartender who was able to stop her tasking for a moment and engage, which was just right considering me and my brother's odd means of socialization. We really think we are good at highbrow humor, which is funnier than it sounds. I'm sure she eye-rolled as soon as she turned. I'll be back because it is the sort of on the edge of cosmopolitan alley bar which my Bohemian roots are drawn towards like an absinthe bar in Prague. Although I would have been more impressed had the Sazerac rim been served with citrus oil and a little flame rather than just a generic expensive cocktail. I think this is a variation rather than a norm, but it would add a bit of flair to the price. Maybe not since it would burn off some of the alcohol. I wonder if that's the absinthe arguing with itself . . . I may have overused the label "bar", but it's easy to spel, and I like to be successful at something on occasion. read more

Found myself here when my original intended destination was unexpectedly closed. Not a bad detour! This is a cute place with a British feel. A little loud and crowded on a Saturday night but I was still able to get a table without waiting. The drinks were creative and well made if a little on the sweet side for me. The About Thyme is definitely a keeper. Also had the truffle fries based on reviews I read here. Fries were a mix of overdone and perfect but the truffle aioli is the star. So much flavor in a small cup! The winter salad was the most forgettable part of the meal. Dressing was lacking in flavor and $12 felt like a lot to spend on some greens and a few chunks of butternut squash. I'd probably come back on a quieter night. read more

Our visit started off disappointing when they have a focaccia flatbread on the menu , and then told they don't offer that anymore- (so take it off the menu) , then I ordered a Harvest Toddy off their cocktail menu, and then was told they cannot make that because they do not have any hot water. Happy hour lasted until 6 PM. We swapped out and ordered at 5:50 PM. I ordered their fish tacos which I thought I ordered off the happy hour menu. I was charged full price and then when I asked about the happy hour price, the manager had to go verify with the server at what time they put our order in the computer. the manager came back and said it was put in at 6:04 PM, so that's why I didn't get the happy hour price, she said to me in a condescending tone here's a couple dollars back since I already closed your closed bill out. I also ordered a refill of chips and salsa to go and (included in her condescending tone) she said they don't normally do that. So if you're wanting to order food to go just know they don't normally do that And will make you feel like they're doing you a favor by putting your food in a box. Small but excellent menu. The potato leek soup with goat cheese is amazing as are the kale, leek, fennel cakes (both are gluten free). Wedge salad is awesome. Flatbreads are yummy. Wine list is great. Mixed drinks are fantastic. My niece loved her raspberry martini. I decided to try mint in my ginger beer and vodka, and I thought it would be just a couple sprigs of mint, but the bartender went to the trouble of muddling the mint which made it even awesomer. It's a small hole-in-the-wall kind of place that's completely worth your while. The brick walls and old tin ceiling make you appreciate the history of the building. read more

We were doing some celebratin' tonight and decided to host our little celebration at this place. We'd stopped by a few weeks ago and saw the menu. We thought "hey, this looks pretty good!" So tonight we tried it out! First off, super cute space! Exposed brick, intimate, nice bar. That's good. Downside to intimate? It's small so I don't think large groups could necessarily partake unless there was some unseen back room. As for the menu, awesome!! My husband likes good food but does have simpler tastes, as in no veggies and no seafood. At.All! As for me, I just plain like and full on respect good food! Let's be honest, it's a little hard to find a dining experience in Salem that fits the bill. We were seated right away, our drink order was taken right away. We were enjoying our cocktails so much that we sort of forgot that no one had taken our order yet. Finally someone asked. It was a little too long to let us sit. But we were fine. I ordered the roasted garlic and chicken confit flatbread. My husband opted for the bacon bleu cheese burger. He received his meal and I received a plain flatbread. Unfortunately that wasn't quite what I ordered. This was discovered right away and remedied but it did take a while. My husband was done with his burger before my entree arrived. The owner, a super nice guy named Toby, comped me a drink for the delay. The chicken confit flatbread was really tasty. My husband said his burger was better than Bo & Vine. It did take quite a long time to get our check. We had to track someone down. Here's the thing, this is a newly opened establishment with a good menu containing well prepared dishes. The owner cared about our experience sincerely. We are confident our experience next time will elicit speedier and accurate service. We live downtown and we want very much for this place to be successful. I hope to provide an even greater score and review next time. read more

My wife and I briefly read the reviews and gave W Wallace a try. She ordered a raspberry sherbert martini and I had a long island iced tea, which is my go to for the past 20 years. Her drink was perfect....expensive, but perfect. Mine was made correct but they used a VERY poor tequila. The horrible tasting tequila overpowered the rest of the drink. But it got the job done. My wife ordered fish tacos and I had teriyaki pulled pork sandwich with truffle fries. Her tacos had a spicy aolie topping that was overpowering to the detriment of tasting any rockfish in the taco. My order of teriyaki pulled pork was cold and soggy. By the time I had consumed half, the bun fell apart. There was really no teriyaki taste at all. It tasted more "smoked" than teriyaki. The fries were heavily salted which is fine with me. I love salt!! My wife thought they were way too salty. We did finish everything with the exception of the sandwich. We felt that maybe the cook was having an off night. As for our bartender, she was amazing. It's not her fault the owner(s) chose horrible well tequila. I'm experienced enough to know that if you consume one long island, and get a "buzz"....it was made right. We rarely get to go out as my wife has luekemia. Regardless of the quality of the food, we were NOT going to complain and possibly spoil our evening. W Wallace has a good atmosphere and played good music. It's on the spendy side costwise. But again, we just needed this time to relax and have libations. We will return again and see if quality improves. If it turns out that the food is poor again, we will complain. I will ask what tequila they are using next time. For the price, it should have been top shelf. Who knows, we are having friends come visit from Roseburg this Friday. I thought I reviewed W. Wallace earlier but I got a "finish your review..." reminder. My birthday was earlier this month and I was told we would be meeting in what appears to me to be the early Salem version of Portland's Pearl District. Most of our group ordered a variety of custom "craft cocktails" with unpronounceable liquor that changes color, is imported from some exotic far away vacation place, or composed rather than merely mixed. Most drinks were promptly passed around and admired. Me? I'm a little more boring. As proof, I ordered the signature W. Wallace Burger that is the biggest, juiciest burger ever. If you have a beard, be sure to ask for extra napkins. And the fries were cut small and precisely fried crispy with a light Cajun finish. I'm a big guy and have never had any trouble polishing off the famous five or so Portland burger "Best Of". I could barely able to polish of this one... but I enjoyed trying. Others in our party had the Stroganoff Ravioli which also got rave reviews. AND I was once a short order cook. read more

There's a caveat that comes with the 5 star rating. Ok, I took my other there for Father's Day. We've been wanting to try this place. We were there about 4:30pm. We were greeted by friendly waitstaff/bartender. I think she was the master of everything. She was friendly, funny, helpful, sweet, attentive. We would go back because of her and the great key lime pie martini. My husband ordered the chicken Alfredo and he loved it. Caveat: But I ordered the lettuce wraps and they were terrible, I should have sent them back. They were too salty, too sweet, to sour, and too spicy. If they had been too spicy I could have dealt with that. Yuck! But despite my dislike for my food, we will go back but from now on I'll make my own lettuce wraps.
