Food has improved over the past 3 months. Although it is still a little inconsistent because of several new cooks recently.

Gave my boyfriend a stale beer. After waiting 5 minutes the bartender made my drink wrong. Rude people. Cute place but bad atmosphere.

A dinner with my wife honoring our 50th anniversary of our first date. Food is awesome as always…read more Our server, Skye was awesome as well. We always enjoy our visits to this restaurant. It reminds us of our time in Germany in the 70's.

Having been to places like Leavenworth and Mt. Angel so frequently (not to mention my trip to…read moreGermany a few years back) apparently made me a bit elitist when it came to Bavarian cuisine, and almost completely forget about Gustav's as a consequence. It was only today, when my boss took our department out to lunch here, was I reminded of how many things Gustav's does right, despite being a chain restaurant. The first reminder came in the form of the interior décor; I forgot how charming it is here: from the entrance to the bar and to the dining halls, there are few restaurants in Vancouver as immediately evocative and immersive in their aesthetics. Our server was friendly, welcoming and helpful in her suggestions, particularly for those members of our party to whom German cuisine is very unfamiliar. The food, by and large, is excellent, although the prices are a bit steep for some of the offerings: for example, the goulash is tied for the most expensive item on the menu, along with the Bavarian Feast. One of these dishes makes sense for the price point; the other does not. It's hard to go wrong with the feast, the wurst platter (in any combination), or any of the schnitzels, but sadly, the Kohlrouladen that I ordered (one of my absolute favorites) didn't quite live up to the high bar set by the same dish at Baren Haus in Leavenworth. The two rounds of fondue with sausage that we ordered as an appetizer were well-received (and thoroughly ravaged) by our party of eight in record time! And although I didn't partake (as I have a negative sweet tooth), a trio of desserts finished off our group's meal, and left everyone satisfied. Overall, Gustav does far more right than I remembered, or gave them credit for. Other than my nitpicks about one particular entrée, and some questionable pricing, everything else about Gustav's punches far above its weight class, especially when considering the fact that it is a chain. By that metric, they have no business being as fantastic as they are! With a couple of tweaks, such as a firmer commitment to embracing German authenticity, and toning down the prices a bit, Gustav's will absolutely have a lock on that fifth star that lies just barely outside their reach.

On a recent trip to Pacific City, we found ourselves returning to Pelican Brewing Company more than…read moreonce--and that says everything. While there aren't a huge number of dining options in town, we never felt like we were settling. In fact, we looked forward to coming back each time. If you're a beer lover, you'll be in heaven. Their selection is extensive, with everything from crisp pilsners to rich stouts, making it easy to find something that suits your taste. The location is simply unbeatable. Nearly every table offers a view of the Pacific Ocean, and if you're lucky enough to grab a seat on the patio (my favorite spot), you're practically sitting on the beach. Watching the waves roll in while enjoying a meal is hard to top. Despite being incredibly busy, every server we had was friendly, attentive, and worked incredibly hard. The only minor downside was that the restaurant appeared to be a little understaffed. There were times when empty tables were visible, yet the wait was still 20-30 minutes. Honestly, though, we didn't mind. Any excuse to sit outside, people-watch, or simply stare out at the ocean is time well spent. The food was consistently excellent throughout our visits. We sampled the clam chowder, fish and chips, Backyard BBQ burger, cheeseburger, oyster shooters (both the Mignonette and Spicy Mary), and the cheese curds. My favorites were easily the clam chowder and the fish and chips--both were outstanding and exactly what you hope for when dining on the Oregon Coast. Even if beer isn't your thing, the cocktail menu is worth exploring. I ordered the Tsunami Warning, a refreshing blend of rum, pineapple and lime juices, ginger beer, and Pelican's Tsunami Stout. It's definitely a unique cocktail that won't be for everyone, but I'm glad I gave it a try. My biggest regret? Never saving room for dessert. Every time I saw one pass by our table, it looked incredible, but I was always too full to order one. That's just one more reason to come back. If you're visiting Pacific City, I highly recommend stopping by the original Pelican Brewing Company. Between the incredible oceanfront setting, excellent food and drinks, and welcoming service, it's a place that's easy to return to again and again.

Came to pick up our expensive "to go" order. Could not find a parking spot anywhere. They have a…read morepick up window but it is not open. So we had to go in. There is no dedicated parking for pick up orders. The order was more than what is on the "take out" menu from their website. When I asked about the price increase she said it was a "surcharge." (Had a bit of attitude when I asked about it as well. I just paid it cause I didn't want to argue when there was a line of people.) There is NO MENTION of a take out "surcharge" and it shows up on the receipt as "tax." There is no state tax in Oregon or a city tax in Pacific City. The food was not a good value for the money. Lettuce wrapped burger was wrapped with brown lettuce. The coleslaw was like mayo soup. I will say the fish in the fish and chips were good and the ranch was good but that was it. There is a lot of room for improvement. Starting in the parking lot!
