Having been to places like Leavenworth and Mt. Angel so frequently (not to mention my trip to Germany a few years back) apparently made me a bit elitist when it came to Bavarian cuisine, and almost completely forget about Gustav's as a consequence. It was only today, when my boss took our department out to lunch here, was I reminded of how many things Gustav's does right, despite being a chain restaurant. The first reminder came in the form of the interior décor; I forgot how charming it is here: from the entrance to the bar and to the dining halls, there are few restaurants in Vancouver as immediately evocative and immersive in their aesthetics. Our server was friendly, welcoming and helpful in her suggestions, particularly for those members of our party to whom German cuisine is very unfamiliar. The food, by and large, is excellent, although the prices are a bit steep for some of the offerings: for example, the goulash is tied for the most expensive item on the menu, along with the Bavarian Feast. One of these dishes makes sense for the price point; the other does not. It's hard to go wrong with the feast, the wurst platter (in any combination), or any of the schnitzels, but sadly, the Kohlrouladen that I ordered (one of my absolute favorites) didn't quite live up to the high bar set by the same dish at Baren Haus in Leavenworth. The two rounds of fondue with sausage that we ordered as an appetizer were well-received (and thoroughly ravaged) by our party of eight in record time! And although I didn't partake (as I have a negative sweet tooth), a trio of desserts finished off our group's meal, and left everyone satisfied. Overall, Gustav does far more right than I remembered, or gave them credit for. Other than my nitpicks about one particular entrée, and some questionable pricing, everything else about Gustav's punches far above its weight class, especially when considering the fact that it is a chain. By that metric, they have no business being as fantastic as they are! With a couple of tweaks, such as a firmer commitment to embracing German authenticity, and toning down the prices a bit, Gustav's will absolutely have a lock on that fifth star that lies just barely outside their reach. read more

I took the family out for dinner to Gustav's this last Saturday. This was in preparation to get ready for an upcoming trip to Munich Germany. When we arrived Saturday evening, the place was packed. The ambience of this place is really cool. It's totally decked out in German flags and wooden alpine decor that I imagine what Germany restaurants will look like when we eventually visit We waited approximately about 30 minutes for a seat which was fine. We got to our table and were tended to right away by the host and the waitress. I ordered a large 22 ounce size Stein of German beer and my son enjoyed one of their cocktail specialties, The Black Forrest, which consisted of , Jägermeister , whiskey, chocolate, and cream, topped off with chocolate sprinkles on the top. Very tasty. The wife had an Arnold Palmer, well because, someone had to drive home! LOL! The food was absolutely outstanding! My son had the Bavarian feast which is a sampling of all different types of German food. His first time having German food and he loved it. Another wonderful experience at this location! I made reservations for a group of 6 people through their online reservation portal. It's easy to use and I love having all the information in writing, including address and phone number, so I can forward the information to others in the group. So convenient! We met our group for lunch at noon on a Sunday. We were seated right away. Our table was set up and ready with menus. Our server was friendly, helpful and attentive. We started with a couple of their fondue platters, one with bread and sausage, and one with a pretzel. We love their cheese fondue! I believe it's the same recipe the original Gustav's owners used. This is the only Gustav's left in the Portland/Vancouver area. They are now owned by the NW Hospitality Group, who also owns Amaro's Table and Cecilia's restaurants. All of their locations have great service and delicious food! I appreciate that the new owners kept all the cool Bavarian decor. It really adds to the experience! Our group ordered a wide variety of entrees...salmon, schnitzel, sandwiches, soups, salads, etc. Everyone was happy with their meals and drinks. After redeploying from a few years abroad, we somehow always find ourselves maneuvering back to Gustav's--because in the AO of Portland-Vancouver, good, reasonably authentic German chow is harder to find than a clean porta-john in a warzone. Prices? Reasonable. Portions? Adequate firepower. We hit the OBJ and, as usual, no wait. Immediate seating. No need for Close Air Support or a table reservation. The staff ran their mission tight--friendly, fast, and squared away. The atmosphere? Straight out of a Bavarian forward operating base--warm, wood-heavy construction, stained glass, tall ceilings. Cozy, inviting, and well within German cultural ROE. We kicked things off with the Fondue ($9)--a hot LZ of creamy cheese with German bread for dipping. Solid value. Good taste. Zero casualties. My main op was the Hungarian Jägerschnitzel ($21)--breaded pork cutlet, mushroom sauce, mashed potatoes. Cutlet wasn't exactly a shock-and-awe portion, and it could've used more gravy for fire support, but overall, I was a happy camper. My XO ordered the Chicken Cordon Bleu ($24) with spaetzle--breaded chicken stuffed with ham and Swiss cheese. Again, portions weren't the kind of heavy artillery you get in Munich, and there was no soup or salad backup, but she enjoyed every bite. I was so disappointed in this place. I had been wanting to go for a while and we finally went on Friday and I regret it. The service was horrible. We walked in and the host stared at us like they have no idea what to do or say, so I asked for a table for 3. They seemed super flustered like they didn't know what to do. One finally took us to a table and I set my purse down and there was a McDonald's bag in there. I didn't take it out I simply set my open purse down and the hostess says "is that food in your purse! You can't have that in here! I'll take that and you can get it back when you leave!" I was shocked because my plan was to zip my purse and hang it on the hook they provided. The food was simply leftovers for my special needs child for later. Speaking of my child, she verbally stims a lot. She wasn't loud but she was grunting and when our waitress finally Came to the table (took forever for her to even come take our drink order) she stared at my daughter in the strangest way because of the noises she was making. She took our drink orders and we ordered food at the same time because we could feel the vibe was just totally off. The food came after about 35 min. The food was interesting. The fondue didn't have much flavor and the bread they serve with is terrible. Before Covid I heard they had amazing fondue with delicious bread they would slightly toast. That's definitely not The case anymore. We also got the pretzel and it was hard. The prime rib sliders were very good. We ate what we could stomach and then went to leave. I asked at the front desk for the cold leftover fries that the hostess/bouncer confiscated from my purse and no one knew where they were. I had to speak to 3 different people before they finally found them. It was honestly one of the worst experiences I've had at a restaurant. There's so many better places that treat their customers kindly on the same street with better food. I would highly recommend visiting one of those. read more

Have been dining at NW Hospitality Group (all your dinning establishment for few years). Everyone of them have had excellent service, portion and price. It is our go to place. On 10/25, we dined at Gustav's and something has changed with food portion. We had the chicken schnitzel and it was much smaller in portion and in our past few outings. Additionally, when we asked for table bread, it was not available as Mgmt is looking into changing the recipe. I could buy that, but you could of offered a replacement during that transition. Thought we'd take a trip to Old Europe by visiting Gustav's for our special occasion. The interior is beautiful, welcoming, and truly transports diners to another world. I ordered the Hungarian Jaeger Schnitzel (a Flintstone's-sized pork cutlet on a bed of spätzle). Hub chose the Sauerbraten. The schnitzel was an absolutely delicious, tender, pork loin in a nice crispy, well-seasoned crust, with a tasty mushroom sauce atop. Hub's dish arrived with sides of mashed potatoes and rotkohl (red cabbage). What kept our meals from earning 5 stars were the side dishes. So many restaurants concentrate on the main dish, while the sides come from warming trays. The spätzle was lukewarm, a bit rubbery, with no sheen. It should go from saute pan to the plate and be piping hot and glistening. Hub's mashed potatoes and rotkohl were cool. When the side dishes are lackluster, it makes the entire dish have a pre-fabbed, cafeteria feel. Also, the sauerbraten was not sliced and arrived in one big "chunk." The service was pleasant and the manager came by with a dessert for us to share for our special occasion. Went on a Monday at 3pm to get some happy hour items to split. Thought we'd try a few different things at a smaller portion size before committing to doing a full dinner here. The happy hour menu items are priced enticingly however what we didn't know when going was that you have to order a drink to be permitted to order off the happy hour food menu. So any discount you think you'll be getting is offset by even the cheapest 5 dollar soda. The picture I've attached (2 sodas not pictured) will put you back 36 bucks after taxes. The pretzel was good. A small step up from the ones you can buy in the freezer section at Costco. Potato pancake was probably fried up earlier in the day and kept in a bin until service. It was not crispy which is kinda the best part. It had been at one point but it was pretty steamed by the time we got it. Potentially microwaved to heat it up, if I had to guess. The sausage was good. Really smooth and good flavor. Probably microwaved as well cause there were no grill marks or ant desingnators that it was cooked in a pan or flat top. Woulda been really nice with some crisp on the skin. The burger was very good. I'd get it again if I were to return although I'm not sure I will. Glad I tested it out during happy hour cause I woulda been really bummed to spend significantly more at dinner for that level of food. read more
